Looking back at these covers, I think Charice is the sure winner. Just look at the way she handles the mic.   Isn’t it???

I was aimlessly viewing through YouTube, and somehow stumbled upon this video featuring a contestant from the America’s Got Talent reality show. It was the first season in 2006, and Taylor Marie Ware sang and yodeled to a stunned and impressed panel of judges. Eventually, she came in third in the finals, behind Bianca Ryan and Celtic Spring.

Yodeling is a form of singing that involves singing an extended note which rapidly and repeatedly changes in pitch from the vocal or chest register (or “chest voice”) to the falsetto/head register; making a high-low-high-low sound. This vocal technique is used in many cultures throughout the world.

In Alpine folk music, it was probably developed in the Swiss Alps and Austrian Alps as a method of communication between mountain peaks, later becoming part of the region’s traditional music.

To me, yodeling is really intriguing, and reminded me very much of country music. Impressive indeed. Love it!

BIANCA RYAN was 11 years old at the time she won  “America’s Got Talent” in 2006.   She is a Soultype 8, and she expresses that through her body constantly during the performances on these two clips.  Her physicality, facial expression, and impact on the judges and audience consistently demonstrate the energy of ST 8.

Bianca stands with her feet firmly planted much of the time in the first clip, and is seated for the first half of her song in the second clip.  When she does move, she takes a few strong steps and then plants again, taking a fairly wide stance and pushing down through her legs.  She shows the ST 8 facial expression of strength almost all of the time.  Eye contact is not part of her posture of strength; you do not see her use her eyes to connect or take in information.  Many times, she gestures strongly downward and near her hips, or puts her arm out at full length as in the ST 8 posture.  Her movements overall are strong and defined, not quick and light.  When she is standing planted and singing, her sacrum moves forward and her lower body goes down even more solidly; when she is seated, she is pushing down directly through her sacrum into the floor.

Watch Bianca performing many times.  Watch her feet.  Watch her sacrum.  Look at the expression on her face.  See how she gestures.  Feel the almost unbelievable power and beauty in these performances by an 11-year-old.  She creates this because she has found a way to align her body with her soul, and that is what you see being expressed in the way she moves, and on her face.  When you align your body with our soul, you are capable of strength far beyond what you have come to accept as normal.  You become extraordinary.

As a contrast, see this article on Taylor Ware, ST 2,  also an 11-year old singer in the same competition. You can begin to distinguish the two soultypes by feeling and comparing the energy these two young ladies generate.  Look at the way they each physically use their body, and look at the different ways the judges and audience members respond to them.  This is not just a difference in personality or style, but a fundamental difference in their physical, energetic and spiritual nature.

Simon Cowell and friends are looking for talented people in America who have the potential to capture an audience for a one hour show in Las Vegas as the grand prize. Some contestants are serious, some are not. Some may not be able to fill a 5 minute show and some could go on for hours. The judges critique the contestants with help from a live audience. At the end of the season, the winner gets $1,000,000 and a contract to appear on the strip in Vegas.

The 2006 winner, Bianca Ryan, was the “11-year-old red head with the voice of a 40-year-old black woman” has fallen off the radar. Terry Fator, the ventriloquist winner from 2007, has parlayed his opportunity into a $100,000,000 five year contract at the Mirage Hotel and Casino. 2008 winner, Neal E Boyd, is an opera singer whose debut album is scheduled to be released this week.

Once again this year, the contestants are being judged by Piers Morgan, Sharon Osbourne, and David Hasselhoff.  During the performances, the judges can show their displeasure with the act by pressing a big red button that emits a buzzer and lights up a red “X”.  Three X’s and the guest is done.  Each judge then gives the person a bit of advice and they go home or move on to the upcoming next round in Las Vegas.

The new host is Nick Cannon. He was the lead actor in the movie “Drumline”. He is an accomplished actor, comedian, rapper, and TV personality.

If you want to have a chance to win, you need to have honed your act to become a better song and dance guy, family singing troupe, dance group, accordion player, singer, keyboardist, animal caller, freak show, comedian, yodeler, acrobat, bagpiper, or impressionist. If you want to gross out your audience, take your freakish body and insertions and make it entertaining.

The acts that are moving on include the Footwork Kings fast stepping dancers, Peter Peterkin the Obama impersonator, the Black Fire Percussion group, Annointed X beatbox percussionist, Unexpected Step Team dancers, Tony Hoard and Rockin’ Rory the Frisbee dog, Brad Byers the fishhook anchor guy, EriAm singing sisters, Urban Nation Hip Hop Choir, Draconic fire and whip act, David Johnson the comedy singer, Bruce & Simone aeriel acrobats, NYC Gay Men’s Choir, Parodys of Dance acrobatic dancers, and Voices of Glory young singers/harmonizers.

My favorite act was Peter Peterkin. He nailed his impersonation of our President, and he took it to the next level when he made the President do an impression of James Brown. He was unique, funny, and very entertaining. I hope to see him in the top 10.

Fantastic American Singer 11 Years Old !

Hailing from Philadelphia, 12 year-old Bianca Ryan is the winner of NBC’s summer hit series America’s Got Talent. “Bianca Ryan is potentially one of the best singers I have ever heard in my life,” said Simon Cowell, executive producer of the show. America’s got talent, sure, but nobody who tuned in to that Simon Cowell-produced TV show could have guessed it was quite so pure and unblemished. Bianca Ryan, like LeAnn Rimes before her, is an absolute baffler–a voice this big and expressive shouldn’t belong to a 12-year-old. As anybody who watched the apple-cheeked starlet make her way across the “Talent” stage knows, though, it does–there’s no dismissing this slam-dunk of a debut on studio wizardry (note to skeptics and naysayers: take it somewhere else). Part Celine Dion, part Christina Aguilera, and part untapped country crooner, Bianca inhabits each of these songs with the kind of vocal dexterity pop hopefuls twice her age take pokes at but never quite nail; she’s all past-her-years wisewoman on the pretty “I Wish That,” a Diane Warren composition, and all skillful but lighthearted chanteuse on “Pray for a Better Day,” a David Foster and Kara DioGuardi number. The LA auditions of America’s Got Talent happened this weekend. Check out this first hand description of the America’s Got Talent auditions in LA. It’s really insightful to see what someone went through and what to expect at the show.

I’m a little sad for the person who did the description, because I’m afraid that the belly dancers were mostly invited to be there for the various cameo shots. I don’t think that they’re going to have major shot at being able to be on the show. It’s unfortunate that they probably didn’t have much of a fair chance.

Also, here’s an interesting update on Bianca Ryan, America’s Got Talent season 1 winner.

Polską edycję “Mam talent” oglądałem jednym okiem. Dopiero finał wywołał u mnie jakiekolwiek emocje. Moimi zdecydowanymi faworytami byli oczywiście Audiofeels, choć przyznaję, że Melkart Ball wygrali zasłużenie – są niesamowici i pokazali coś czego, jak żyję, nie widziałem. Natomiast kompletnie nie rozumiałem zachwytów na niejaką Klaudią Kulawik. Dla niezorientowanych, przypominam, że zrobiło się o niej głośno pod tym, gdy w eliminacjach wykonała “Dziwny jest ten świat” Niemena. Głos ma niesamowity – fakt. Emisję taką, że mogłaby kruszyć ściany. Ale to dziecko jest jak gitara, której wszystkie struny nastrojone są na jeden dźwięk – śpiewa tylko “jak Niemen”. Nie panuje nad swoim głosem w pełni. Być może za kilka lat, ale na razie na pewno nie. Dlatego trudno mi dołączyć do zachwytów na nią.

Co ciekawe nie tylko w polskiej edycji “Mam talent” zobaczyć można było cudowne dziecko pokroju Klaudii Kulawik. Swego czasu na YouTube rekordy popularności była niejaka Charice, która w powalający sposób wykonywała utwory Whitney Houston. I znowu – tylko Whitney Houston. Innymi słowy ona również “ustawiona” była na jedną modłę. Udało jej sie osiągnąć taką popularność, że sam kompozytor piosenki “I Will Always Love You” – David Foster, zaprosił ją do wykonania tego utworu na swoim jubileuszowym koncercie.

Robi wrażenie prawda? Ale wciąż jest odtwórcze. Charice ma jednak jeden atut, którego Klaudia Kulawik niestety nie ma – charyzmę sceniczną. Będę na pewno obserwował jej pocznania na scenie muzycznej. Być może za kilka lat…

Jak widzicie mam sporo rezerwę zarówno do szału wokół Klaudii Kulawik, jak i Charice. Ale jest jedna młoda gwiazda, która przekonała mnie do siebie w pełni. Oto jak zaczęła się jej kariera:

Oglądam to już chyba z setny i raz i nie mogę wyjść z podziwu. Głos Bianci Ryan jest nie tylko piękny. Nie tylko mocny. Ona nad nim w pełni panuje! Jedenastolatka, która śpiewa nie gorzej niż Jennifer Holiday. Nie “jak Jennifer Holiday”, tylko właśnie “nie gorzej od niej”. Widzicie różnice?

Bianca Ryan wygrała pierwszą edycję “America’s Got Talent”. Moim zdaniem całkowicie zasłużenie. A potem nagrała płytę. Średnią, ponieważ robioną na szybko, na fali jej popularności. Oczywiście znalazł się na niej utwór “And I am telling you I am not going”, bo jakże by inaczej. Poza nim na płycie znajdziecie całkiem niezły cover “I believe I can fly” R. Kelly’ego. Ale dla mnie absolutną perełką na tym krążku jest utwór “Awake”. To on udowodnił mi, że sukces Bianci nie jest przypadkowy i że za kilka lat będzie o niej głośno. Posłuchajcie sami:

Pewnie, że jest to tylko pop. Ale moim zdaniem pop na najwyższym poziomie.

Podsumowując – na świecie jest pewnie wiele dzieci tak uzdolnionych jak Klaudia, Bianca czy Charice. Oby jak najwięcej z nich udało sie odnaleźć i dać im szansę. Tylko dobrze by było, gdyby ich rodzice czy nauczyciele pamiętali, że każdy woklista powinien mieć własny styl. A nie udawać, że jest kimś, kim nie jest.

Bianca Ryan was the final great winner in the sing contest in 2006. She published only two albums and was actor in one film. Since this time it get be quit around her. What a pity! Wouldn’t it be nice to hear more of her?

I’m turning 30 today, September 1, 2008.

I’m not in a celebratory mood though. Never been. The Filipino tradition of holding a bash or at least having a get together meal is alien to me. The last time I had a birthday cake was when I turned one or two. I can’t really remember for obvious reasons. My family was simply not into celebrating except during the Holiday Season.

I never resented this fact, however. We’re not moneyed, and I can’t blame my parents if their idea of avoiding unnecessary spending back then includes skipping a birthday bash and not doling out pricey gifts. We go to Church instead to thank God for the blessings of the past year and share a simple meal at home. Spartan? Amish? Works for me.

I’ve had some memorable gifts though. I remember on my 5th birthday, my dad gave me a huge, hardbound book with out-of-this world illustrations of aliens and spaceships and weird landscapes. It was called – you guessed it – the Alien Book and I never saw anything like it. The painted pictures were hyper-realistic and a true feast for the eyes although I never really sat down to read the stories which mentioned some of the hardest words to pronounce and read for a five-year old.

On my 11th birthday my dad brought me to the second-hand book heaven called Recto and there he bought me a three-inch thick illustrated book on Biology, plus an old 1970’s edition of NatGeo magazine and a broken Volume of Encyclopedia Britannica (Letter “A”, 1967 edition).

Those were some of the best gifts I ever had. I gladly devoured them from page to page. I would sometimes skip meals and “valuable” play time just to read those books. I still have them up to now, intact albeit in a state of deterioration.

Reading stuff aside, one of the best (and by far, the most expensive) gifts I ever had is a special edition Swatch Skin Watch given to me by my wife five years ago, when our relationship was just a few months old. This gift totally caught me by surprise since I was not even asking for anything for my birthday, as was, and still is my custom. The next year, she gave me a full size coffee table book on Andres Bonifacio and the Philippine Revolution. With such exquisite detail and illustrations, I was hooked on big, thick books all over again.

Still, I never thought of my birthday as special for whatever reason. I think the honors belong to those whose birthdays fall on December 25 and January 1 because the whole world will join them in merriment for the rest of their lives. The drawback of course is the ever-constant threat of receiving just one gift for one’s birthday and the holidays combined. Happy parents. Shortchanged kids.

When I was in 2nd year high school, there were 4 of us in the class who share the same natal day. When we got together to chat we shared virtually the same memories on our day of birth: torrential rains and floods that made it impossible to go somewhere and have fun. I think most other people born on the same day in Manila will have the same somber, gloomy observation.

There are a lot more reasons to remember September 1 though. Some of them were good but most were tragic. For some strange reason, huge, earth shaking events (literally and figuratively) happen on the 1st of September throughout recorded history. Here’s to name a few:

1715 – King Louis XIV of France dies after a reign of 72 years—the longest of any major European monarch.

1859 – A solar superstorm affects electrical telegraph service.

1914 – The last passenger pigeon, a female named Martha, dies in captivity in the Cincinnati Zoo.

1923 – The Great Kantō earthquake devastates Tokyo and Yokohama, killing about 105,000 people.

1939 – World War II: Nazi Germany attacks Poland, beginning the war that killed 72 million people, including 147,000 Filipinos over a span of 6 years.

1974 – The SR-71 Blackbird sets (and holds) the record for flying from New York to London: 1 hour 54 minutes and 56.4 seconds.

1983 – Cold War: Korean Air Flight 007 is shot down by a Soviet Union jet fighter when the commercial aircraft enters Soviet airspace. All 269 on board are killed, including US Congressmen and Lawrence McDonald and 11 Filipinos.

2004 – The Beslan school hostage crisis begins when armed terrorists take hundreds of school children and adults hostage in the Russian town of Beslan in North Ossetia. Death Toll: 385

Mohammed Atta, the Egyptian terrorist who made history by ramming the first plane into the World Trade Center was born on September 1, 1967. As we all know by now, he crashed the plane (aka Flight 11) into the North tower on Sept. 11, just ten days after his birthday. The guy’s obsession with the number 1 escapes me though. This is one guy I’m not proud to share a birthday with.

Overall September 1 has a lot more to do with deaths than births. There is a lot more reason to mourn than celebrate when this date is mentioned so don’t ask why I’m in no mood to celebrate.

But then again, I just might be stingy:) hehe.

(P.S. While I was writing this, my wife knocked at the door and gave me a sumptuous choco caramel cake with a lit candle on top. Thank goodness it was just one candle, not 30.:))
