questa mattina        presto

dopo una notte piena di risvegli

con gli sbadigli incastrati  ai tendini del braccio

accanto a un dolore continuo che non mi dava pace

dopo pochissimo dal mio arrivo

ho iniziato a  sentire     viva     una ferita

più vasta      ampia

irreparabile che andava aumentando in me

una crepa      esattamente dentro

un centro che superava il cuore

e non riuscivo a  misurarne i dintorni se non così  vicino a tutti

quegli        altri

di cui non sapevo non immaginavo    non pensavo il male

Un’ambulanza dopo l’altra s’era fatto così

prossimo

un popolo

un popolo di vecchi       di grandi vecchi

che  non trovi  mai sui quotidiani

a meno che non siano ultra

centenari e svegli     ancora in qualche modo belli

per fare   notizia    cassetta e audience

una specie di merce speciale da giornale.

Là     tra quelle pareti  bianchi nel bianco   del pronto soccorso

loro erano  un vetro

muti       pallidissimi   tenacemente fragilissimi

ed era manifesto in quei loro

lenti    gesti sfocati     appena accennati

una forza senza ansia

una specie di luogo  paese

una specie di golena

un posto dove aspettare la piena delle acque.

Umanità di  velina       t r a s p a r e n t e

la voce       in sordina

e l’occhio liquido     lontano      in un mare così vasto

che appena ci coglie

noi

esseri della deriva.

E saliva in me un  pianto che non riuscivo a contenere

che non riuscivo a nascondermi

e arginare come se di tutto quel loro male

io partecipassi vivamente in tutto il mio essere là

con loro

con passione e il petto   la gola aperti in uno slargo senza misura

fossero  il centro

il vero della ferita

quella che aveva premuto me  fino a quei confini

oltre la mano oltre la stretta del braccio.

Per apprezzare una bottiglia occorre valutarne il contenuto prima di tutto con gli occhi e l’olfatto, quindi con la bocca; solamente capendolo a fondo si può proporre il miglior abbinamento con il cibo.

L’analisi organolettica, o sensoriale, del vino consente di esprimere giudizi in merito a qualità, grado di invecchiamento, livello di maturazione raggiunto dalle uve utilizzate, standard di piacevolezza, nonché a individuarne alcune componenti. Inoltre, definite le caratteristiche del prodotto, si possono stabilire gli abbinamenti più felici con i cibi. Si effettua in tre fasi distinte, nelle quali si utilizzano rispettivamente gli occhi, il naso e la bocca.

ANALISI VISIVA

È la più immediata; avviene, in pratica, attraverso gli stimoli che l’occhio riceve dalle onde luminose e dai colori. Osservando il vino si verifica la limpidezza; se è torbido, anche il colore risulta falsato e quindi le sfumature cromatiche sono più difficili da individuare. Spesso l’intorbidamento può essere causato da semplici sedimenti che, dopo un periodo di decantazione, precipitano lasciando il vino di nuovo chiaro. Va inoltre detto che il vino rosso non è mai nettamente “pulito” e per questo motivo, durante la valutazione, la limpidezza non viene considerata come un elemento di fondamentale importanza.
Altri parametri da valutare sono la trasparenza, l’intensità e le sfumature. Il vino è trasparente se interposto a un giornale non ne impedisce la lettura; nel caso contrario si tratta di un vino opaco. Ma attenzione! Trasparenza e limpidezza non sono sinonimi. Un vino, infatti, può essere limpido, ossia scevro di qualsiasi componente che lo intorbidisce, ma privo di trasparenza. Questa qualità dipende in buona misura dalle uve: se sono molto colorate il vino risulterà opaco. L’intensità del colore è la risultante di numerosi fattori come vitigno, natura del terreno, livello di maturazione dell’uva e così via. Le sfumature, a loro volta, mutano con il variare dell’invecchiamento e subiscono costanti evoluzioni; possono essere violacee, poi color rubino, quindi granata e, quando il vino è lungamente invecchiato, aranciate.
Anche le sostanze coloranti mutano secondo il livello di maturazione del vino; quando è giovane il colore viene fornito dai pigmenti della buccia dell’uva (chiamati dai tecnici “antociani”). Man mano che il vino matura agli antociani si associano degli acidi chiamati tannini e, quando è vecchio, la coloritura è data dalla concentrazione dei tannini.

So as I sit in my living room, watching the rain decide to linger through mid-day, I’ve decided that I might as well introduce myself.  My name is Tim Fridsma, and I got into cycling four years ago.

Home on vacation just after my senior year of college, I watched my mom compete in a triathlon and I got nostalgic.  Yes, the atmosphere surrounding hundreds of sweaty bodies got me all worked up.  Mind you, I do not feel this way when walking into the locker room of my local gym.  That is a totally different sort of sweaty.  But the mood of everyone present made me think back to my childhood, when my dad regularly competed in 5k road races.  As a kid, there was nothing better than running in the Kiddie Race, getting your ribbon for finishing, and then sneaking some food left invitingly on multiple tables throughout the finish area.  I watched my mom and all the other competitors cross the finish line with smiles or grimaces.  But every one of them also had this sense of satisfaction and achievement.  After the race was over, I heard the announcer tell the finishers that they were now part of one of the most exclusive demographics in the US: that of triathlete.  More people in the US become famous than complete a triathlon.  That stat blew my mind.  As I looked around me I realized that a good percentage of the finishers were in worse physical shape than I was.  Maybe this triathlon thing wasn’t so impossible after all.

But as with so many grand ideas, my ambitions to complete a triathlon were quickly forgotten as I plowed full force into the post-graduation real world; my head now filled with bills, car insurance and my weekly fix of LOST on TV.  Then my roommate came up with the bright idea to compete in a local sprint tri.  Feeling as though I was destined for greatness, I sent in my registration fee and began to train.  I had a bathing suit and some running shoes, so all I needed was a bicycle.  After asking around, I was able to get my feet on an older, but recently restored, Bianchi in a wonderful salmon color.  At least, that’s what I told myself as I began my first training ride on the faded pink frame.  My summer was taken up by swimming, biking, and running.  The event at last arrived, and I hopped into the water, waiting for my wave to start.  One sprint tri later, I was also part of that exclusive demographic: Triathlete!  I had found myself something to be passionate about.  I had found meaning and purpose.  Most importantly I had beaten all three of my friends who had also entered.  And the roommate who’d suggested the tri?  He maintained a rigorous training regiment of smoking while delivering pizzas and found himself clinging for dear life to the side of a kayak halfway through the swim.

Decisivo un eurogoal in rovesciata dell’ex Rolando Bianchi. La classifica si fa preoccupante: martedì altra dura trasferta a Lecce dove si deciderà il destino di Novellino: arriva l’esonero?

I numeri sono impietosi: in dieci partite sono arrivate cinque sconfitte e tre pareggi. Solo due vittorie. Sette goal fatti e quindici subiti: il terzo peggior attacco e la seconda peggior difesa della serie B. E nelle ultime tre gare sono arrivate tre sonore batoste, con sei goal al passivo e nessuna marcatura. La Reggina è in crisi nera e dire che è oggi una squadra allo sbando non sarebbe tanto lontano dalla realtà dei fatti.

Se non fosse per il cuore mostrato a Torino, dove – per la prima volta in questa stagione – i giocatori amaranto hanno saputo reagire al doppio svantaggio senza darsi per vinti, provando a rifarsi sotto e, quantomeno, accorciare le distanze con il goal della bandiera fino all’ultimo secondo di un ormai inutile recupero.

Sapevano che la partita era ormai persa, ma hanno forzato per trovare quel goal che avrebbe ridato un minimo di morale e speranza.
La situazione è difficile, buia.

Sembrano non esserci vie di uscita, ma Novellino – almeno per adesso – non si tocca: Foti gli ha dato due partite di tempo prima dell’esonero, e quindi adesso dipenderà tutto dal Lecce-Reggina di martedì sera.

E sarebbe un esonero difficile, sofferto, tormentato. Anche perchè quest’estate la squadra è stata costruita apposta per l’allenatore, con acquisti mirati sulle richieste di Novellino. Ma il mister non avrebbe alibi o scusanti: gran parte della tifoseria avrebbe voluto veder ’saltare’ la panchina già da diverse settimane.

Si torna in campo tra tre giorni, e forse è l’unica nota positiva per una squadra che ormai non ha nulla da perdere e che, davvero, peggio di così non si capisce dove possa arrivare.

We both have the track bike thing wired down (Gardin and Gitane), but there comes a time where you want to be able to ride 100 km comfortably, aka not having to spin the entire time. I cannot ride my bike enough in this city. It’s electric. Unlike NYC, where I am almost positive riding will get me killed, San Francisco has been an absolute playground for Blanca (left).

Not only does cycling help keep me fit (kinda) and provide all the adrenaline I need, it has also helped reshape my values. I am much more environmentally and civically conscious. As a proud, card-carrying member of the SF Bicycling Coalition and Spur Urban Center I am eager to volunteer for a few upcoming events to help promote this healthy and creative mode of travel.

One of these kick ass events is coming up this weekend. It’s hosted by ArtCrank and sponsored by Chrome Messenger Bags, a SF cycling staple.

This event, like another I’ll touch on soon, is a great way to embed an urban sport like cycling into street art culture. That’s not to say that there isn’t already a natural connection. Bikes are just extensions of our personal brands. They reflect who we are and what we have to say. They are easily customized and designed to brighten up the city streets and flash some style while weaving in and out of frustrated motorists.

The fixie trend has definitely brought some additional awareness about cycling too (although I’m not too keen on riding something without brakes). Either way, bicycles are evolving as a legitimate creative medium that should be recognized.

Recently, one gallery connected the dots and dedicated a huge installation to the bicycle. The exhibit, which was titled “Bicycles: people + ideas in motion” was curated by Lorie Mertes, Director at The Galleries at Moore. The final product was an exploration of the art and design of bikes and their impact on urban landscape.

I wish I could’ve seen Ryan Humphrey’s installation (below) in person. Mertes was quoted saying that “Humphrey draws inspiration from Evel Knievel, Eddy Van Halen and Duchamp.” That’s awesome.

I’ll start off by saying this, life’s good.

And it keeps getting better.

This weekend my dad’s friend, Franco, told me he had an 1980’s Motobecane Super Mirage road bike that he no longer uses that I could use for spare parts for my fixie. But after taking one look at the bike I fell in love, sure she’s French and very dirty, but we tend to find love in the weirdest of places. She is in a bit of a sorry state right now, the shifters don’t work, only one brake cable works and that one needs replacing as well as it is completely rusted, the wheels are covered in rust, the seat post is as brown as mud, and the freewheel/cassette is as dirty as Black Mountain is steep. But that’s the beauty of it, it’s going to be hard, but I want to be able to ride her, I want to see her in the corner of my garage and know that I restored her to life. So for the next couple weeks I’ll be slaving away to get her in tip-top condition. It’ll take some money for new cables, a lot of patience, and even more elbow grease. So here starts the Galatea project, and yes that’s her name, pretty isn’t it? An even prettier girl named her for me.

My makeshift replacement chain – I connected an old chain that was in better shape and the working part of the original Motobecane chain to create one of the right length. This isn’t a permanent fix, I’ll eventually get a new one, but for now this will do.

The seat is actually in decent shape, but aesthetically the springs aren’t that great. A new saddle would be expensive so I’m going to invest in some steel wool to see if I can buff off the surface rust.

And this is basically how all the cables look, both shift and brake. There’s no point in trying to work with these, I don’t want to risk injury. I’ll replace all four and probably try to refurbish the actual shifters as they are pretty rusty.

At one point I did consider repainting her, but she’s just too pretty and I really do prefer originals. The tires and wheels shouldn’t be too much work to get looking pretty again, and even if the tires are too old, replacements aren’t too expensive.

Wish me luck and keep checking back for updates on Galatea.
