Wahrgenommen habe ich den Biber-Bewerb schon vor ein paar Jahren, aber erst gestern habe die die Aufgaben des letzten Jahres ausprobiert – und für gut befunden . SchülerInnen müssen sich mit grundlegenden Informatik-Aufgaben auseinandersetzen, die wenig mit dem Lehrplan, aber viel mit logischem Denken, Abläufen und Rätseln zu tun haben. Meine 7. Klasse (16 – 17 J.) hatte viel Spaß daran und beschwerte sich nur ganz wenig, “dass man dabei soviel denken muss”!

Es sind Probeaufgaben ( und die Lösungen) aus dem Jahr 2008 aufrufbar nach den Kategorien:

• Benjamin: 5.- bis 8. Schulstufe
• Junior: 9.- bis 10. Schulstufe
• Senior: 11- bis 13. Schulstufe

Nach der deutschen Biber-Seite scheint heuer eine weitere Altersuntergliederung vorgenommen worden zu sein (5/6, 7/8, 9/10, 11/13).

I used much of my time this week (9.24.20009) reading, pondering, researching, and studying many ideas in the fields of Orality, Literacy, Primary Oral Cultures vs. Primarily Writing Cultures, and Characteristics of each or either.

Here some results of my reading accomplished for Literacy, Rhetoric, and Technology, RWS 511, Fall 2009, SDSU, taught by Professor Werry.

The first, reading included all of Chapter 6, “Discourse and Medium”, in the 2nd edition of Barbara Johnstone’s pedagogical text, Discourse Analysis; published in 2008 by Blackwell. I also read the article, “The Lost World of Colonial Handwriting” by Tamara Plakins Thornton. This can be found in Literacy: A Critical Sourcebook. edited by Cushman et al. for Bedford St Martins press in 2001. See my separate blog herein on this article.

Barbara Johnstone,a Professor of Rhetoric and Linguistics at Carnegie Mellon University, PA., has produced an expansive body of published work. She is a major contributor to the areas of sociolinguistics, linguistics, discourse structures, and rhetoric through the late 20th century into this 21st century.

This sixth chapter of her textbook, Discourse Analysis reaches into the symbiotic relationship between discourse and its medium. She steadily unfolds and untwists the tangled mix of causes, affects, perspectives, technologies, multi-modal discourse, and misconceptions historical and cultural. Her writing is clear and word choice simple. Once presented, many of her explanations of discourse and medium’s influence over each other seem obvious. Yet,  I (and I venture most amateur rhetoricians) would have great trouble unraveling these knots on my own. Some examples of these elements form the first page (195) are: “Starting or ending a conversation via the telephone is different from starting or ending a conversation with someone who can be seen.” And, most of us are quite aware of metamessages through font styles, colors, and size in our email discourses.

In the following outline form I will give my general impression of this chapter; section IA.  I provide an overview of major sections and the claims presented by Dr. Johnstone or those which she discusses in IB. Other great resources for investigating the Homeric Question are listed in IC. Finally, in ID, I have a short list of other important texts which will aid an investigation of thought about Orality, Literacy and Writing.

IA. About Dr. Barbara Johnstone:

Anyone interested in areas of Sociolinguistics, Linguistics, Philosophy of Literacy and Linguistics, Rhetoric and Writing, and development processes of cultures, brain function, and psychology must read more of Dr Barbara Johnstone’s work. Interestingly, it was circa1960’s when realizations of major differences between oral cultures and written cultures surfaced across several fields of Western scholarly research. We are told that this insight was sparked by a scholar of the Iliad and the Odyssey, Milman Parry (1902 – 1935). He is noted to have found an answer to the enduring Homeric Question, “Who really wrote these ancient epics?” Though long attributed to Homer, Parry resolved that these epics were originally oral stories passed along for many generations by a primary oral people. Parry took these recitations of history, heroes, battles, and morals and demonstrated similarities to other epic poems and songs which were from known primary oral traditions. (ibid 198-199)

An Aside: I am confused about the dates when Parry’s announced his conclusions to the scholarly world. Dr Johnstone’s brief section, “Early work on ‘Orality and Literacy’”,in chapter six, states that Parry’s son published all of his work in 1971. (ibid 198) I assume that this theory was shared with the scholastic community during his lifetime, because “Erik Havelock (1982 [1963])” is noted to have claimed that “literature does not have the same function in an oral tradition, said Havelock, as in a literate one.” These epic tales functioned as entertainment and history lessons, he said. Verbal formulas for characters and situations are a common characteristic of an oral literacy. (ibid 199)

This chapter, Discourse and Medium, presents a deep river from which flow many tributaries bringing life to theories, questions, and fertile research areas. One such direction of inquiry comes up against the idea that “orality” (oral communication without any recourse to written language) was in opposition to “literacy”, and washed those prejudgments away.  “Historians woke up to “orality” in the 1980’s, for example, after reading Walter Ong’s publications…” Ong’s conclusions cite several ways that knowledge is transmitted in an oral lifeworld that is quite different in written lifeworlds. To contrast and compare elements of oral and written cultures, Ong devised an arrangement of these into structures, themes, and function. (ibid 199)

Perhaps as a result of her well mapped paths, many of the statements about discourse and the medium or modality discourse appeared on the face as rather obvious conclusions. Yet, I (and, I venture to say, most amateur rhetoriticians) would have great trouble if we were left on our own to navigate a satisfactory route to see and clearly state these same ideas. For example: “[S]tarting or ending a conversation via the telephone is different from starting or ending a conversation with someone who can be seen.” (ibid 195) Also, we are quite aware of the way that choices of font styles, colors, and size convey different visual messages.  However, the strikingly difficult thing for most of us to understand is the consciousness of those who communicate (are literate) in cultures devoid of any technologies for writing, remembering, analyzing, computing, and sharing experiences. Ah-hah. How can we of writing cultures ever know if we are understanding people from primary oral cultures? (ibid 198)

Oral to written language changed Greeks immensely. They moved toward having a history away from having myth.

Literacy and Literacies

CLAIM: “…medium affects, and is affected by, what people do with discourse.” (ibid 201)

Dialect: ways of speaking that do not have a specific writing system. Sociolinguists say not so… i.e. Louisiana French… (ibid 204-206)

<> For Middle Ages Europeans writing was only seen as good for dictation, it took years before writing was an activity in its own right; not having to be spoken first. Soon writing became more authoritative… but not the Nukulaelae… where oral messages were thought to be much more reliable. (ibid 204)

Communication and Technology

CLAIM: “All discourse is mediated.” and “… material objects of all sorts serve as carriers of meaning…” (ibid 208)

CLAIM: All medium used are affected by beliefs, ideology. Even technologies available everywhere are not used the same ways or for the same purposes. (ibid 207)

Kress and Van Leeuwen suggest strata of 4 interrelated sources of resources and constraints: discourse, design, production, and distribution.

CLAIM: “…the interactive qualities of how form and meaning are produced mean that no particular speaker or hearer is ever the sole creator of discourse.” “…we live in a world where discourse, design and production no longer form a unity.” (ibid 227)

IC. The Homeric Question

Take the challenge offered by Felice Vinci in his, “The Baltic Origins of Homer’s Epic Tales: The Iliad, The Odyssey, and the Migration of Myth”. Rochester, Vermont: Inner Traditions, 2006. Library of Congress, ISBN 1-59477-052-2 (pbk)

How should historians and “known” history” be affected by these vital discussions about characteristics of primary oral cultures and those of written cultures? A phrase attributed to Walter J. Ong in discussing oral culture traits is, “One only knows what one knows.” In writing cultures many people believe and therefore “know” only what they read, some people only trust what they hear. In both situations human beings are susceptible to relying on false information. The many questions, postulates and contradictions in re the Homeric Question are, as well, historic unknowns, and yet, Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey are the earliest known poems of the Western literature. Vinci’s theory about these epics follows a well respected path of re-discovering history. First published in Italian in 1995 under the title, Omero nel Baltico, The Baltic Origins of Homer’s Epic Tales, follows the eye-opening works of Moses Finley, Heinrich Schliemann, Stuart Piggott, Charles Dumézil, Karl Kerényi and Martin P. Nilsson.

Felice Vinci’s claim is that “[t]he origin of the poem of Achilles, the Iliad, seems to be the regions of the Gulf of Finland, whereas the first nucleus of the poem glorifying Ulysses, the Odyssey, likely originated in the area of what is now Denmark,” (Joscelyn Godwin, in the forward of Vinci’s book, X-XI)

“Doch was geht uns das eigentlich alles an?”, werden viele fragen. “Arten kommen und gehen, so ist der Lauf der Dinge eben.” Doch mit so einer Gleichgültigkeit kommen wir leider nicht weit, denn wir wissen noch viel zu wenig über die Vielfalt der Natur, um wirklich einschätzen zu können, was für Folgen so ein massiver Artenrückgang bedeuten würde.

Heike Holdinghausen kommentiert dazu in der taz:

Wo liegt für all jene, die sich nicht zur Gemeinde der Tierfreunde zählen, das Problem? Man weiß es nicht genau. Das Artensterben ist auch deshalb so gefährlich, weil seine Folgen nicht absehbar sind.

Beispiel Biber: Vor hundert Jahren galt er als Schädling, der wertvolle Flächen unter Wasser setzte. Heute haben wir begriffen, dass seine Stauseen Moore erhalten, die das Klima schützen. Welchen Wert der Mensch einem Tier im Ökosystem zuweist, hängt davon ab, wie viel er von ihm weiß. Dass es dem Biber wieder besser geht, verdankt er vor allem Naturschutzgebieten. Die aber helfen Feldhamster und viele Vogelarten nicht. Sie benötigen keine abgeschirmten Areale, sondern eine andere Nutzung von Wiesen und Feldern. Sie sind auf Bauern angewiesen, die ihr Land mit ihnen teilen.

Immerhin: Die Bestände von Biber, Wolf und 42 anderen Arten haben sich ein wenig erholt – vielleicht gelingt dies ja auch bei einigen der anderen Wirbeltierarten.

Wir waren mit Rookie, Pakak, Arrow, Merlin und Akira unterwegs, als wir dieser gestürtzten Pappel begegnet sind. Nicht dass es positiv für die Pappel wäre – aber sie zeugt davon, dass es trotz Jäger (und Todschlagfallen) hier immernoch Biber gibt!

Ein näherer Blick rings um die Pappel zeigte dann, dass sich die Biber hier schon länger betätigen, denn es gab neben den neuen auch alte von ihnen gefällte Stämme.

Setelah kami (semua alumni) berbuka puasa dengan takjil yang makanannya berupa nasi kotak, dan minuman es telur mutiara. Kami bergegas untuk melaksanakan sholat maghrib berjama’ah.Karena saat itu tempat untuk sholat tidak memadai untuk kami semua maka dilakukan dengan cara kloter (bergantian). Yang menjadi imam pada kloter pertama adalah mantan Kepala Sekolah Dasar Manukan kulon IV yaitu, Bapak Drs. Haryono. Beliau menjabat sebagai kepala sekolah saat saya masih SD. Kloter demi kloter selesai melaksanakan tugasnya, itu berarti tiap muslim yang beriman disana telah selesai bersujud menghadap Sang kholik.

Acara berikutnya adalah melihat record video pada saat kami melakukan kegiatan Persami (perkemahan sabtu minggu) di Batu,Malang. Ya… saya masih ingat saat-saat itu, saat dimana saya masih dalam suatu proses potensial yang belum dapat muncul di udara dan merupakan suatu kebebasan terpendam dalam jiwa yang masih tenang.

Sekilas melihat video tersebut kami tertawa sendiri melihat wajah-wajah manusia kecil yang tergolong masih lugu padahal saat itu tidak ada yang lucu. Termasuk wajah kecil saya…hal itu langsung mengingatkan saya pada ingatan-ingatan lama saya yang terpendam. Seakan-akan saya dahulu memiliki cita-cita untuk diwujudkan oleh saya yang sekarang ini. Saya mencoba mengingat apa yang saya cita-citakan dahulu. Lalu Tiba-tiba video tua tersebut menunjukan gambar yang tersendat-sendat. Acara langsung dilanjutkan oleh Bapak Hary, beliau memberikan sepatah kata sebelum berpamitan. Yang saya ingat dari pesan beliau saat itu kurang lebih adalah sebagai berikut.”Pada usia seperti kamu semua saat ini merupakan usia dimana seorang manusia masih mencari sebuah figur untuk dijadikan sebagai panutan yang baik, jadi jika anda tidak menemukannya dalam lingkungan anda coba milikilah the willing of change dalam kehidupan.”

Kemudian acara dilanjutkan dengan sharing ringan tapi langsung dilanjutkan dengan mini Games yang cukup seru. Pesertanya tentu saja kami semua. Orang pertama yang tertangkap adalah Vio lalu disusul oleh Rena. Setelah acara itu waktunya penutupan, disinilah terjadi kontak batin diantara sesama alumni. Kebanyakan dari mereka merasa acara reuni tersebut berlalu begitu cepat dan seolah-olah tak mau berakhir. Maka ada beberapa alumni yang melanjutkan reuninya di suatu tempat yang sering disebut dengan nama ”Pop es keju.”

The end of Labor-day weekend 2009- This will count as my first official post on ‘Tuned in 4ths’, a blog dedicated to the doublebass.  I have been inspired by those around me who have been a little bit more technically savvy than myself.  Yet, in an age where technology moves so quick, I’m ready to take the challenge and dive in head-first.

There are many goals of this blog (some of which may end up being unreasonable), however my first goal is to share with the doublebass community what I have learned over the years of teaching and being a student.  Many of my future posts will hopefully be fun, easy to read, and informative (especially for some of my students).  Other goals in this blog will be to discuss teaching, performers, events, gear, gig stories, and maybe event occasionally a post about family life or politics.

Let me close this inaugural post with a really cool YouTube video I just came across recently.  It’s a piece by Heinrich Ignaz von Biber (1644-1704) called “Battalia”.  Can anyone guess what this is depiciting?  If you said a ‘battle’ you’re correct!  Be sure to check out the movement when the doublebass is called upon to play the role of a drummer (snare & bass drums).  He takes a piece of paper and weaves it between the strings and plays col legno (with the ‘wood’ of the bow)… the bow striking the instrument is like a stick hitting the drum, and the piece of paper is like the snare.  What a neat effect!   Towards the end of this ‘battle’ piece, the doublebassist also uses a “Bartok Pizz” or snapping pizzicato technique to approximate the sound of cannons being fired.  What a super cool and radically inovative piece for the late 1600’s.  Enjoy!
