Bible Commentaries are great resources for you as you study your Bible, but they are NOT the Bible. They are a good way to check out the ideas of the great Christian minds that have come before us, but they are not infallible. This short video gives you some reasons to read them and introduces you to a website where it’s easy to skim and compare content as well as do an in-depth study.

An overview and tour of Classic Bible Commentaries site
When you aren’t sure what a passage of scripture is about, checking classic Bible commentaries can help. This site has some of the best and a very easy way to switch between them.
Click on the images below to download either a PDF of the full size images from class (a great way to review or see the content) or a copy of class notes.

In this class we answered the challenging questions that asked why we fault the Mormon church for changes in their scriptures, when the historical Christian church has an Old Testament and a New Testament. Many would say that the Book of Mormon is simply a later addition. This lesson shows how different the Mormon view is than the Biblical view of Progressive Revelation. Click on the images below to download either a PDF of the full size images from class (a great way to review or see the content) or a copy of class notes.

How do we know what’s true? How do we determine what is a true message from God and what may be a well-meaning, but ultimately false message from a human? In our current study of Islam and Christianity, how do which determine which religion is correct because they teach very different things?

One useful beginning is to study the historical background of the writings. This background is essential to determine any historical truth. We know that Julius Caesar existed, that Alexander conquered, that in “1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue,” not because we’ve personally talked to any of these people, but because we have historical records that tell us about them.

Historians use various tests to determine what is more likely to be a true record of the past and what may be a mythological story that has grown up since that time. Some of these tests include the number of manuscripts available, the date of the manuscripts, the authors, whether manuscripts agree with each other or not.

No religious text should be treated differently

Though religious texts claim (and Christians believe) that the Bible is much more than a historically valid text, no religious text should be treated differently according to the tests of history. For example, if a person only appears once in the historical record and that record was written hundreds of years after the person was reported to have lived and, in contrast, if a person was written about in thousands of manuscripts written closely to the time the person lived, it’s obvious that we would consider the life of the second person more likely true than the first.

When we look at the Bible, the historical evidence is solid

The following four lessons are a series on both how we got our Bible as well as how we determined what books make up the Bible. The lessons all have a video and PDF of notes. Take time to go over them and you’ll learn how your faith has a firm foundation. Click on any title to go to that lesson:

In our introduction to the Prophets, we learned that though we often think about them as primarily telling us about the future, that is not their primary message. Though fulfilled prophecy confirmed their divine inspiration and origin, it makes up a small percentage of their message.

Their primary message to their audience and to us today is how to live to please God. This lesson was an introduction to this approach. Below is a video of the PowerPoint presentation. Following it are notes of presentation and a chart overview of the chronology of the Prophets.

Be sure and join us (or come back to this website) each week as we continue to study the prophets individually and learn God’s plan for our lives.

I was asked this question in an email and I thought it might be helpful to post the answer here. Act

I was asked this question in an email and I thought it might be helpful to post the answer here.

Actually the question deals with how to date the books of the Bible overall, if there was a specific source I use for dating, and then specifically about the book of Job, because various commentators date it between mid 1400′s BC to 500 BC. Here is my answer:

That is a good question! But there is no easy answer to your questions and there are a number of reasons why. First some comments overall and then specifics on Job.

Overall, some general thoughts about the dating of books of the Bible overall

For some of the books, particularly the historical ones it is not difficult to date them. In the Old Testament 1 & 2 Samuel, 1 & 2 Kings and in the New Testament, the book of Acts is fairly simple because it’s easy to compare them with what we know of secular history.

In the Old Testament, it get is much more difficult with the prophetic ones, because, after much study and comparison of many sources, I’ve come to the conclusion that the dating of the books depends primarily on the commentator’s view of scripture. If it is a high view of scripture, one that believes that the Bible was inspired by God and is inerrant, most books are dated earlier. For the prophetic books, this means that they would be dated before the events they prophesied, which is what the books themselves state.

If however, the commentator has a low view of the Bible, if they look at scripture as a compilation of “sacred writings” but ones written by men, they will always date the books later, especially the prophetic ones and put them after the events prophesied, because regardless of whatever other historical, textual, or other evidence is in the books themselves they approach them with the prior decision that God could not be actually involved and therefore no prophecy could be real. They have to date them as after the events or they can’t explain their accuracy if they don’t attribute it to God.

Side note: One source I read did attribute prophecy to time travel, but obviously that is not a widely accepted view. . . . . .

As to a specific source for dating the books of the Bible overall

I don’t have any one source–I think it is really important to read many, partly so that I can anticipate questions people might have. However, for general study, one of the best overall an online resource for dating is:

http://carm.org/when-was-bible-written-and-who-wrote-it

I agree with pretty much all of it (and his Old Testament chronology and dating is very good) except that the majority of current, conservative biblical scholarship (and some liberals ) date the writing of John and Revelation much earlier– prior to the destruction of the Temple in 70 AD. I do think this is important as the late dating, more and more people realize was the result of erroneously imposing a dispensational viewpoint on these books rather than looking at the testimony of the early church fathers and the interior evidence of the books themselves.

About Job

As to Job, you’ll notice even that list has just big question marks and doesn’t even begin to guess when he wrote. I have researched this question for a long time and there is no definite answer, but I do think we have some good evidence for an early date.

I’ve come to that conclusion after studying many resources from reading the Talmud (the Talmudic Tractate Bava Batra 15a-b says that Job was written by Moses, but as all the tractates do, it also has many of the other ideas, some interesting, most lengthy and tortuous to read) plus studying many contemporary scholars, and finally my own internal historical cross-referencing (I cross referenced many place names and people with the early lists in Genesis) I do believe the events in Job took place quite early, around Abraham’s time. I also think, most likely (as many sources believe) they were written down by Moses.

The exact dating itself however is not the critical issue because, though I don’t have the exact citation now, a great comment came from one of the resources I was reading earlier this week where the writer said that though we cannot date the exact date Job was written down, from all obvious internal evidence the events took place very early in Biblical history. We know they happened very early, but when they were recorded is secondary. Here is a book that the events and the authorship are separated, but so is all the early history that Moses wrote in the first five books of the Bible. Creation took place a long time before Moses wrote it down and so did the flood, Abraham and all the Patriarchs and the events in Job also. That all those things took place in the foundational times of our faith and that Moses recorded all of them for us, all evidence considered, it seems the most reasonable (though admittedly not proven) conclusion.

Asking questions seems to an intrinsic part of what it means to be human. From children’s perp

Asking questions seems to an intrinsic part of what it means to be human. From children’s perpetual “What’s this?” ”Why?” ”Why not?” to the philosopher’s “Where did we come from?” “Why are we here?” “Is there any purpose to our existence?” questions fill our minds.

We may not be a child or a philosopher and we may not speak our questions out-loud, but we all have them: “Why did this happen or not happen to me?” “Why did I deserve this wonderful or awful, incredible or dreadful thing?” “Is there a God and does he care?”

If we are a Christ-follower, the questions don’t necessarily stop. In reality they often become more complex when our everyday experience of the Christian life does not line up with our expectations of what is supposed to be. Much of the modern religious message is that if you are a Christian, tithe, and vote the right way, life will always be wonderful. Sounds great and those guidelines are easy to do—but when reality intrudes and you lose your job or health, or a loved one, questions without easy answers bubble up.

Where do we find answers?

Without wanting to sound trite or irreverent, a bit of folk wisdom applies here: “When all else fails, read the instructions.”

God has not left us without answers. The answers to all our questions are in His Word, in the Bible. The problem many of us face in the struggles of life is not that there are not answers, but that we have not taken the time to read them and to work to understand and apply them.

It is work

Getting the answers to life from the Bible is not a quick and easy grabbing a verse out of context and “claiming it” because we like what it says. Getting true answers from the Bible involves:

Taking the time to understand what theologians refer to as “the whole counsel of God. ” This which means, first, reading the entire Bible and understanding how each section fits into the story of redemption.

Reading verses in the content of paragraphs and whole book they are part of so that you don’t twist something to mean what the passage never meant.

Understanding the historical, cultural setting to properly interpret between what is timeless and what applied to a specific situation.

Praying for understanding and insight as you read, trusting the Holy Spirit to guide you.

Helping you read through the Bible in this way is our goal for our classes and we will be specifically teaching you how to do this through this website, in our Sunday morning and Sunday evening classes.

Back to Genesis and Job

Now to comment on how we can begin to find answers in Genesis and Job. You may wonder why in the reading plan, the first three days are in Genesis and then you read Job—here’s why:

Foundational answers we find in Genesis and Job

Genesis and Job cover a similar time period with Job taking place about the time of Abraham. We’ll go into more about Job in the teaching time on the book (starting Jan. 16, Sunday night 6:30, Coastline Bible Church, Fireside Room), but it’s important to understand that Job was not a Jew—he was outside the line of Abraham, Issac and Jacob and yet God chose to tell his story to us.

Genesis and Job cover the beginning of the human race and our relationship with God. As they do that the books answer many of the BIG questions of life:

Why are we here? Who made us?

Why death? Why suffering?

Who is Satan? What power does he have?

Is God involved in our lives? What can we expect from Him?

Does being good guarantee a good life?

The reason many people struggle with life, especially when life is difficult is that they have never taken the time to study these two books in detail. Here is our plan for doing that:

First, read them (click here if you don’t have the reading plan and download the PDF).

Journal, write your comments and questions

PLEASE sign up on the top right corner of the home page to get automatic updates on this site. There will be ever-growing resources including commentary, study links, videos, past lessons.

Come to our teaching times. The primary teaching time on reading through the Bible will be: Sunday nights, 6:30-8:00, Coastline Bible Church, 426 Mills Rd (across from the mall), in the Fireside Room.

TELL and INVITE your friends! Though we are going through a year-long series, I promise each class will be self-contained so a newcomer or visitor will not be confused. In addition, we’ll have plenty of time for discussion in small groups AND time to ask more questions. This class is for those who are followers of Jesus, but also for those who are not—please let them know they will be comfortable in the class.
