Adventures tend to arrive in packs, so of course when we got to our destination we realised that this was the last day of Venice Biennale. Of course we grabbed the tickets at once and ran happily towards pavilions.
I’ve been talking about going there for quite a while, but never managed to actually go there until now.
Oh, it was just so good!
The space itself was great – old buildings with stripped walls, scattered around the old garden, really thrilling. Like, if aliens came to Earth a few thousands years from now, what would they find leftover from human civilisation? A bunch of shattered houses full of weird art objects.
Particularly exciting was the mood of the expositions. Seems like our pretty little planet is overcoming its emo-mode, and finally getting back on track to being happy, even if slightly infantile. Half of the artists presented something childish, naïve or charmingly obscure. Old blankets, scraps of colourful wires and threads, toys and lunch boxes all went into action. I particularly liked the use of stickers and newspaper cut-outs in a sweet piece “Recycling Buddha”. Unfortunately I don’t have an image, but it was quite some object, believe you me

my personal favourite, mirror disco unicorn aka discohorn

whataturkey!

I don’t know really whether the selection represents more curators’ taste or the general trend, but I was definitely happy to see it.
High time to get back to happy! Happy is the new sad, turn off your heartbreaking tunes, especially you, young folks who grew up with cheesy love songs!
Anyhow, the naïveté, obscure humour and soft irony of the art pieces made me wonder if maybe the world is finally getting ready for this type of thinking – slightly surreal and odd but still meaningful?.. Would be good news for me and my writing, which is exactly this, only maybe less of the childish and more towards the odd… Haha, what can I say, I do care for my writing a bunch, so you’ll hear here a bit about it

The biennale also had quite a few flashbacks from the past decades, which have actually complemented its general vibe. And these oldies were the ones I actually liked most, they were somewhat of a new discovery as well.

a work by Öyvind Fahlström

another work by Öyvind Fahlström

First one was Öyvind Fahlström, a Brazilian-born Swedish artist, who worked in the 15950s and 1960s. His comic collages were amazing – the idea, the execution, the colours. It just really stroke me. And the man must have made quite a bit of research of newspapers and factbooks, as all of his images are very inter-referential. My favourite bit was a feature of a “Swedish Diplomat Wife Book” with all kind of advise on how to organise a crossword-solving evening and to choose flowers for the room. Heartwarming!
Here are some of his works

a work by Pavel Pepperstein

Another artist I really liked was Pavel Pepperstein. I read a feature on him in September issue of Tank magazine, and it was interesting to actually see his works.

He was featured twice: old works, and then a whole room of his new 2009 stuff. I can relate to his vision: the dude is all about futuristic landscapes, thinking clouds and mountains, eating supremas. His combination of cartoonish style and this really old-school classical illustrating is great, as well as his use of watercolours. Could well be found on the cover of my book Somehow though the guy managed to stay exactly where he was 30 years ago – don’t know whether to respect that or … else…
Also, he is very Russian in a way, with his approach to art, and the topics that he raises. Its very dystopian, sometimes slightly disturbing, but also rather Tarkovski, ‘back to the future’, and retrofuturistic (as you can see from the picture above). All in all, worth a look. Or two.

November 23rd was the last day of the 2009 Kobe Biennale, which I went to visit last week. The Biennale is held at the waterfront site of Meriken Park, under the shadow of Kobe’s famous Port Tower and right next to the Maritime Museum. Because Kobe is historically a port city, the organizers of the Biennale decided that the best way to mount the exhibition would be to build a temporary village from shipping containers. I’m a huge fan of shipping container architecture, so I was especially excited to visit the exhibit and see how the re-purposed cargo spaces were used the first time I visited the Biennale in 2007 with my friends Joe and Angie.

The 2007 Kobe Biennale featured 45 award-winning works of art mounted in shipping containers in addition to displays featuring ikebana, works by disabled artists, a display of ceramic art, and art made by and for children. The works of art varied widely in terms of idea, execution, and aesthetic effect but all of them were interesting and posed as their own enclosed worlds that served to open up enjoyable spaces for thought and encounter. The piece featured at the top of this entry — consisting of two mirrored panels that come to a point to create a space of unending reflection — is called “Infinite Planet” (無限の惑星) and is by a group from Ishikawa called Star in the TENTEN (天々星組). The piece pictured above is by Song Junnam and Yoon Cyongsu and is called “Kobe People.” Here’s what the artists have to say about this piece: “I am a foreigner who lives in Japan. It’s not rare in Kobe. Usually, I’m a minority, but in this work, I fill it up by the photographs of the foreigner’s faces, who are living in Japan. Through the encounter of foreigners living in Japan, who are also neighbors, I hope you can sense yourself, the foreigners, and Kobe.”

Several of the containers had ikebana on display. The theme at work here was “future ikebana,” and many of the arrangements were truly incredible.

This piece, by Akihiro Kumagaya and Eisuke Tachikawa (熊谷彰博 and 太刀川英輔) was really fantastic. It consisted of a mostly bare container painted white on the inside, which a few desks, chairs, and banks of red markers scattered around. The entryway was constructed from pieces of red plastic so that when you looked through them into the container you (in theory) wouldn’t be able to see what was written on the walls. All of the writing in the container was produced by guests at the Biennale, who were supposed to write down important thoughts, or perhaps childhood memories. It was incredibly fun to add pieces of text to the jumble inside the container, and to spend time walking around and reading what other people had written. This piece is listed as being untitled on the official 2007 Kobe Biennale site, but I remember it being called “What’s Your First Memory?”

This work, simply titled “Zebra,” (しまうま) is by Shibata Michiri (柴 田美千里). There’s something deeply uncanny about walking through a container filled with stumpy zebra torsos. I almost felt like I was walking through a zebra snuff film. But at the same time there’s something funny about this piece, as if it were the punchline for a joke that you’ve forgotten the set up for.

This piece, by an artist called ONOYOTONN (小野養豚ん), a name that means “pig-farm,” was one of my favorites at the Biennale. Here’s what ONOYOTONN has to say about the piece, which is called “A Herd” (群): “I grew up on a pig farm and have made many works with pig motifs. With the theme of ‘encounter’, I embodied pig-herding images playfully. I mass-produced mini-pigs so that the container is full of them and enjoyed in the space.” The pigs were made from some kind of wax, and a few of them had fallen from the walls and the ceilings by the time that Angie, Joe, and myself made it to the Biennale. Because of the scattered nature of the pigs there was almost a sense of massacre about the place, and standing inside an area so full of pink fleshiness made me feel a little bit like I was standing inside a piece of intestine. Or perhaps a bit as if I were trapped inside a sausage.

This piece — a webwork of glowing white tubules in a container with mirrored walls — made me feel like I was inside some kind of strange futuristic alien spaceship, or perhaps standing in a scene that never made it into the Matrix series. The piece is by Ryosuke Sai (宰井良輔) of DOLPHIN KICK (ドルフィンキック), which is one of the best names for an arts-oriented design group that I can think of. In the photo above you can see Joe, in the process of snapping this self-portrait.

Here’s Angie standing in front of a chalkboard that was completely covered with a single, extensive, set of of mathematical operations. Across from the chalkboard were several wooden school desks equipped with paper and pencils so that you could sit down in front of the board and work up as much abstract calculation as your heart might desire. So far, so normal. But what you can’t do is sit at the desks without also sitting on an open ceramic toilet, the only seats in the place. This is a piece that makes you think about the relationship between abstraction and bodily functions, and our inability to escape from our animal nature, no matter how hard we might try. The piece, called “Animal Expression,” is by Yamashita Ryuuji (山下竜司) and this is what he has to say about it: “We, human beings, using various materials, escape from the genus named “animals”, against reality. Even if it was impossible.”

This piece by Florian Claar, called “Symphonic Light Chamber,” is meant to sculpturally imitate the structure of 18th-century symphonic compositions. I’m not sure that the piece ended up having that particular effect on me, but as a gloriously futuristic sculptural space I thought it was fantastic. In fact, it felt very 2001 to me — up to and including the final transition in which you step through the circular entrance at the rear of the container and into a black void full of tiny pinpricks of light: “The thing’s hollow—it goes on forever—and—oh my God—it’s full of stars!”

This beautiful work is composed of more than 2,500 letters and characters from different languages from around the world. The colorful writing is illuminated from behind, and walking into this room is a bit like walking into an abstracted conversation in which you’re hearing bits and pieces of the entire planetary population talking at once. This piece, by Noriko Shiozawa (塩澤徳子), is called “Koto-no-ha” (こと‐の‐は), which is an older Japanese word for “language.” Shiozawa-san was kind enough to give her permission to allow the photograph above to be used as the cover for the UNESCO Jakarta Annual Report 2008.

This piece, by Hans Schohl, was called “General Cargo Celestial Mechanics” and consisted of several beautiful kinetic sculptures that were illuminated so that long shadows would be cast on the walls of the container. The sculptures — similar to models of planetary rotation — reminded me vaguely of Aughra’s observatory in The Dark Crystal.

There were far more works at the 2007 Biennale than Joe, Angie, and I were able to see in a single day, and many of the really amazing pieces that we did manage to see weren’t the kind of works that show up well on film. If I had had the opportunity, I would have visited the Biennale over the course of several days, slowly moving from work to work and taking plenty of time for coffee, relaxation, and clearing the head in between. I might even have taken some time to watch the sun set from the top of Kobe’s Port Tower, instead of watching the sun set inside of a container, as beautiful as that in fact turned out to be. The piece above, called “koyomi,” is by Daiichi Shichino (七野大一) and it simulates sunset and moonrise by projecting slowly moving images of light at the end of a container in which a long reflecting pool has been constructed. Inside the container, the images of sun and moon are reflected across the pool which quietly ripples and undulates from localized vibrations within the container. All very dark, quiet, slow, and beautiful.

The Venice Biennale is a big scale look at the current mover and shakers in the art scene. The whole idea in a nut shell is a representative from each country from around the world gets the chance to show whats hip and current in their region TODAY its contemporary at its best ! Its held every two years in Venice. It is divided into 2 regions in Giardini & Arsenale.

I wasn’t surprised to see vast amount of Video work at the Biennale some of the video work was amazing including the Polish ‘GUESTS’ – The project opens the Pavilion’s space to both virtual & real scenes showing the immigrants from countries. These scenes filmed through windows, are projected onto the Pavillion Windowless walls. Enter the concept, I suppose you call it, behind the video. The piece was dealt with emigrants and peoples reaction to the foreign people and the reception that they received. It was a powerful atmospheric, moody video installation and to me virtually ground breaking. These humongous cinematic screens in the shape of a church and the entire ceiling of muted blue screens with videos of mysterious shadows and outlines of people doing day-to-day chores. To street scenes, labours all behind these screens accompanied with sounds of people from everyday environments.

I’m usually not a huge fan of installation art–I find it too often grays the area between art and furniture. Not that the two mediums are mutually exclusive. Instead, I would say that it’s extremely difficult to be just a good artist or just a good interior designer. The ambitious blending of these two fields tends to result in things like pieces of garbage hanging from the ceiling with fishing line or chairs made of broken glass.

That in mind, this weekend I went to Kobe Biennale art exhibition. The exhibition takes place at many sites through the city, however the focal point was in Meriken Park, at the Port of Kobe. There, organizers had a erected a small, improvised outdoor museum.

Origami was promised- "Origami Shrine" by Goco Tomohisa

The highlight of the Biennale was the “Art in Containers” International Exhibition. Thirty contemporary artists–all who have some connection to Kobe–were chosen, and each were tasked with creating an installation piece inside a 40 ft. deep shipping container.

As I said before, I am not a huge fan of installation art; however, I do think the utilization of shipping containers buoyed the effectiveness of some of these pieces. Having a defined space provided a clear segmentation between each piece while elegantly condensing and focusing some of the art in a manner that enhanced the experience.

Cardboard sculpture Buddha- "BUTSU" by Honbori Yuji

That’s not to say that I loved every piece. Some of them were the typical over-thought and under executed installations that modern art is often criticized for. There was the boring 3-D animation from the early 90’s on a wall container, and another that was simply a dark space with weird sounds. I actually didn’t stay in the any of the darkened containers for any extended period of time. I’ve seen to many crime shows to feel safe when alone in a pitch-black shipping container; at any moment the door could slam shut and not reopen until days later some detective finds your frozen, dead body in Arkhangelsk and he then has to get in his Lieutenants face just to start making inquiries with the local organized crime syndicates.

On the whole, many of the installations were interesting. My particular favorite involved a container where the walls and ceiling were covered in tiny wall clocks. The sound of hundreds of clocks ticking simultaneous was one of those unique art experiences (clock shops excluded). Also, a in the container at the same time as me lady had the audacity to touch one of the clocks. Of course, the clock she touched and another fell off the wall and shattered on the floor. I somehow was able to catch the entire spectacle from her initial arm extension to her sever and instantaneous reaction of regret (it’s a universal expression). I don’t really like performance art either but this was like my own private candid camera show, except for the part where she actually looked at me and I had to quickly reply “daijobu” (everything is okay).

Walk into the light

Also, this is Japan, so there was some cool large scale origami. There were other containers that had a more circus atmosphere–funny mirrors and one with just a bunch of fans and mounds of confetti that you could play in. While one might dispute the artistic endeavor of these installations, the fun quotient of them can really be debated.

watch your head

Free parking available on the Twickenham Embankment, 5 mins from Twickenham Station

There will be ‘work in progress’ plus a large selection of new oil paintings which will be available to purchase along with prints and cards.

Venice is a town of smartly dressed dogs and meter-wide “streets” that can only be successfully navigated by people who are relaxed but alert after an hour long spritz break followed by an hour-long espresso break.

I was part of a group of artists performing “site-specific” pieces inspired by the Ca’Zanadi house, a gaudy and lovely old Rococo building that now serves as a boutique hotel/art space.

And I found this gem of a stencil near the Ca’Zanadi. Look closely–yes, those are chewing gum penises.

I had the tiniest little hotel closet of a room, which would have been a bit of a bummer if the awesome person who stayed there before me had not left a pair of heart-shaped light up glasses under the bed for me to find.

BiNOMI – Biennale Nord Ovest Milano
Base 1 – Creative Intenzioni
in collaborazione con
Fabbrica Borroni

presenta

CirConferenze
a cura di
Marta Garavaglia, Cristina Raisi, Chiara Salanti, Sarah Silke Tasca
