Kojarzycie Marylina Mansona? Tak. A Alice’a Coopera? Tego już może nie wszyscy, ale większość

Kojarzycie Marylina Mansona? Tak. A Alice’a Coopera?

W 1956 roku Screamin’ Jak Hawkins (bo taki pseudonim przybrał Jalacy Hawkins) nagrał swój największy hit – “I Put a Spell on You”.

Hawkins nagrał jeszcze trochę popularnych kawałków (“Frenzy”, “Alligator Wine”, “Little Demon”, “Constipation Blues”), żaden jednak nie powtórzył sukcesu “Spell”. W latach 80tych i 90 tych koncertował on wspólnie chociażby z The Clash czy Nickiem Cavem, jego muzyka była szczególnie popularna w krajach europejskich. Niestety – 12 lutego 20 roku Jay zmarł w Paryżu po operacji tętniaka. Zostawił nam jednak swoją wspaniałą muzykę (na początek polecam płytę “Cow Fingers and Mosquito Pie”)…

By Don Heckman

Full time big bands are in short supply these days. True, the ghost bands, bearing the names of Swing Era leaders tour the arts centers of America. And a few stable ensembles work to keep the instrumentation alive — some as institutional entities (the Jazz Orchestra of Lincoln Center, the Chicago Jazz Ensemble), some managing on their own (the Maria Schneider Orchestra, the Diva Jazz Orchestra) More often, big jazz bands are ad hoc ensembles, based around a leader, a book of compositions (often arranged or composed by the leader) and an occasional gig.

But, hearing the performance by the Bob Mintzer Big Band Tuesday night at Vibrato Grill Jazz…etc., one couldn’t help but wish that the remarkable, large jazz ensemble instrumentation – the primary American musical collective of the 20th century — could have a far more frequent presence in contemporary musical life.

Saxophonist Mintzer, perhaps most visible as a member of the Yellowjackets, is also a gifted composer arranger, whose charts are frequently played by collegiate and high school jazz ensembles around the country. His Big Band, however – with its cadre of A-list L.A. players — is only a sometime thing, performing on the relatively rare occasions when a club such as Vibrato provides a forum. And the setting for their performance was an impressive visual sight – with the sixteen members of the Band positioned on and off the stage, the four trumpeters on stools at the back of the platform, the four trombonists on chairs in front, and the five saxophonists seated on chairs placed on the floor in front of the stage. Bass, drums and piano were clustered to the side of the full group.

What really mattered, of course, was the music. Mintzer mostly chose original works, some inspired by personal history – “Original People” traced to a job he had at a Pequot Indian casino. “New Rochelle” was a tribute to his home town. He also offered his arrangements of Thad Jones’ ballad “Don’t Ever Leave” and the Billie Holiday classic “Easy Living,” which was done as a feature for Mintzer’s adventurous tenor saxophone.

His arranging style tended to juxtapose unison ensemble passage against each other – at times recalling the work of Bill Holman – while occasionally adding surprisingly dense harmonic passages and sudden, explosive, full band accents. Substantial space was opened for soloists, with Mintzer, alto saxophonist Bob Sheppard, trumpeter John Daversa, pianist John Beasley and drummer Peter Erskine providing particularly impressive outings.

Playing with minimal rehearsal time, the Mintzer Band delivered a crisp, craftsman-like set of performances. At its best, it was a convincing display of the full breadth of musical pleasures that can be produced by a first rate big jazz band. Let’s hope they return to Vibrato soon.

Exclaim!’s December issue features its annual Year In Review in which each contributor writes about one release “that excited them most this year.”

David Ryshpan, contributor to the magazine’s Destination Out section, chose Darcy James Argue’s Infernal Machines (New Amsterdam Records).

“Vancouver-born, Brooklyn-based Argue has expanded the big band vocabulary,” he writes. “A protégé of masters Bob Brookmeyer and Maria Schneider, he bridges the gaps between new classical, indie rock and jazz. Argue’s masterful use of mutes and woodwind doubles, his harmonic sophistication, attention to form, and a secret weapon in guitarist Sebastian Noelle, place Infernal Machines at the forefront of 21st century jazz.”

On Wednesday, November 25th, composer/conductor Darcy James Argue and his acclaimed big band, Secret Society, will make their first-ever appearance at New York’s Iridium Jazz Club.

The 18-piece ensemble, which released its highly regarded debut, Infernal Machines (New Amsterdam Records), in May, will play two sets, beginning at 8:30 and 10:30 p.m. For this performance, Argue and the band will welcome special guest drummer Kendrick Scott (Terence Blanchard, Jimmy Greene, Gretchen Parlato).

“Kendrick last played with Secret Society in November 2006 at the Bowery Poetry Club,” Argue explains, “and it’s a thrill to welcome him back into the fold. I’m a huge fan of his playing—he’s both highly inventive and sublimely grooving, and he’s an amazing listener. I’ve written a lot of music since he last played with us and I’m very excited to hear what Kendrick will bring to that material.”

He adds, “I’m pleased our first performance at a marquee NYC jazz club happens to be at the one that’s been open-minded enough to host performances by groups like Anthony Braxton’s 12+1tet and the Cecil Taylor Big Band.”

My father’s father, known as “Papas,” is a very cool guy despite an affinity for forwarding Republican chain emails to the family. Papas is a lifelong musician who played lead trombone in the US Air Force Band for 12 years, has played with the Benny Goodman Orchestra, and continues to play in jazz and big bands just for fun. He sings, too. It’s sad if he can’t make it to Thanksgiving or Christmas, but funny when grandpa’s excuse is that he has a “gig.”

One day, Papas sent an email without any conservative bent or Obama joke. It contained a link to a video featuring a woman named Gunhild Carling. He commented in the message: “Do you think she has a standing gig Saturday nights?”

This woman is bananas.

Like my grandpa, Gunhild Carling is a trombonist and a singer. She dances. She also plays the flute. And the harmonica. And the harp. And the bagpipes. And the stand-up bass and the trumpet…at the same time. AND THREE TRUMPETS AT THE SAME TIME.

Carling is young too, born in 1975 in Sweden. She puts all of our American Idols to shame, but I’ll change my opinion the day I see Clay Aiken playing the saxophone while juggling. For more information, check out Carling’s website here.

Thanks for the tip, Papas!

Chick Webb was a jazz drummer with an incredible swinging band and spirit. At birth Webb battled congenital tuberculosis of the spine in order to become one of the most competitive drummers and bandleaders of the big band era. ..this left him in poor health for his entire life, Chick was a small, hunchback of a man who possessed an “incredible spirit” and an astounding musical talent. For many jazz fans, Chick remains arguably the greatest jazz drummer to have ever played the instrument. Yet it was only by a quirk of fate that Chick even came to play the drums.

Chick Webb

The idea of playing the instrument was suggested to him by his doctor as a way to “loosen up” his stiffened limbs. By saving money earned through delivering papers, Chick soon secured a drum set. And by the age of seventeen, Chick was playing in New York nights clubs such as the Black Bottom and the Paddock Club. These early jobs were secured for him through the efforts of Duke Ellington who instantly recognized Chick’s talent. It was Ellington who encouraged Chick to form a quintet aptly called the “Harlem Stoppers.” The name was probably derived from Chick’s own hard driving style on the drums as the quintet’s leader. Later, this quintet would evolve into one of the most feared “swing” bands in New York — The Chick Webb Orchestra.

The Chick Webb Orchestra earned its fame after it became the house band of the legendary Savoy Ballroom in Harlem, New York. At the Savoy jazz bands made reputations for themselves by taking part in cuttin’ sessions usually against Chick Webb’s Orchestra. Count Bassie, Fletcher Henderson, Lloyd Scott and other, merely great, swing bands fell before the awesome power of Chick Webb’s spectacular playing. And, when the famous Benny Goodman Band came to Harlem to challenge the Chick Webb Orchestra at the Savoy, they too were left cut and bleeding after the encounter. Even the legendary Gene Krupa was said to have been shell-shocked by the power of Chick’s playing. But what else could Krupa expect from a bandleader and drummer whose moniker was “The King of the Savoy!”

Chick Webb’s already mythical reputation was given even greater stature when he replaced his longtime vocalist Charles Linton with a then relatively unknown singer by the name of Ella Fitzgerald. Jazz legend has it that Ella “snuck” into Chick Webb’s dressing room in order to convince him to take her into his bed. But legends notwithstanding, Ella did become Chick’s lead vocalist. And Ella, called adoringly by fans and musicians, “The First Lady of Swing,” always acknowledged Chick Webb as her “first and foremost” influence.

Together, Chick and Ella, would electrify the Swing era of jazz with hits such as “A-Tisket a Tasket,” which was composed by Ella to cheer Chick up while he was ill. And while this and other great tunes recorded by these artists are well-known, Chick’s early work — some say his most impressive solos — was regrettably poorly captured by recording technology ill suited for Chick’s immense talent. But one of Chick’s hit tunes “Stompin’ at the Savoy” gives contemporary jazz fans some hint of the power of Chick Webb and his Orchestra.

In 1938, Chick Webb’s health began to fail him. This was mostly due to Chick’s chronic spinal condition and his insistence that he and his orchestra would only perform at the height of their talents for their fans. Often it was said that Chick played with such power that he was physically exhausted when he left the bandstand.

In 1939, Chick returned to Baltimore for a major operation. Shortly afterwards, the little giant died on June 16, 1939 with his mother at his side. Chick’s funeral procession was said to have been composed of some eighty cars and the church where he was eulogized was said to be unable to hold all the mourners.

Biography

Holy Wood (2000-2001)

Marilyn Manson and Twiggy, Drawing by Sw Eden

Yes, this is the man behind the likes of “Valley Girl,” and “Don’t Eat the Yellow Snow.” Believe it or not, he’s even better at composing than writing off-color lyrics. In fact, if I weren’t interested in keeping this blog interesting, there would probably be a good two or three Zappa songs a day. Though it was written by a guy who was only ever recognized for his “comedy rock,” this may be my favorite jazz tune.

Nieeeeeee… To zdecydowanie nie mogło się udać.

I jak na złość się udało. Najpierw pojawił się singiel nagrany z Kylie Minogue, pt. “Something Stupid”. Moim zdaniem, najsłabszy na całym albumie. Nie znaczy to, że zły. Najsłabszy. Niemniej jednak na tyle interesujący, żeby przykuć moją uwagę i na nowo wzbudzić we mnie ciekawość albumem “Swing When Y0u’re Winning”. Wysupłałem kasę z kieszonkowego (hehe, to były czasy) i podreptałem do Empiku.

Ba, w jednym z utworów mistrza (“It Was a Very Good Year”), dzięki nowoczesnej technice, obaj śpiewają razem. Poza tą piosenka na albumie znalazły się kompozycje Duke’a Ellingtona, Nata Kinga Cole’a, Kurta Weilla czy George’a Gershwina. Same wielkie nazwiska.

No i wokal Robbiego – pierwsza klasa. Słychać również jak dużą frajdę miał on podczas nagrywania. Zaprosił do studia swoich przyjaciół – poza Minogue, również Ruperta Everetta i Jonathana Wilkesa. Każdy z nich wniósł coś ciekawego do albumu i do śpiewanych utworów (duet z Everettem – “They Can’t Take That Away From Me” oraz “Mr. Bojangles” to zdecydowanie moje ulubione utwory).

“They Can’t Take That Away From Me”

“Mr Bojangles”

P.S. Zachęcam Was do tego samego.

Big Band Week burst onto our screens this week, bringing with it all the glitz and glamour of a Las

Big Band Week burst onto our screens this week, bringing with it all the glitz and glamour of a Las Vegas stage. The judges were all present and correct too, as Louis was back on the panel. So, with all the X Factor family back together, it was time to get the party started!

Olly Murs was up first singing ‘Bewitched’. I was really impressed with Olly this week and thought the Big Band genre suited his style of singing. It seems I wasn’t alone – Cheryl said: “It’s like you’re really coming into your own, each week you’re just growing that little bit more”. So Olly might be 10 feet tall in next weeks show!

Little Lloyd Daniels sang ‘Fly Me To The Moon’ and threw in the added bonus of a backflip. I thought Lloyd’s performance was a tad predictable (except for the backflip). Simon’s critique of it was just genius, he said: “Doing a backflip and singing ’Fly Me To The Moon’ is like eating a sandwich while you’re swimming!” Somebody give that man a comedy award!

Miss Frank were next, singing the song that made the judges want to put them together as a group at the auditions, ‘That’s Life’. I enjoyed their performance, and thought the rap gave it a unique twist. Dannii felt that the performance had put the girls ‘back in the race’ and the rest of the judges seemed to agree.

Rachel Adedeji seemed like she had been transformed this week when she came to the stage singing Beyonce’s version of ‘Proud Mary’. With her new image and attitude, to me, Rachel seemed to be comfortable on the stage for the very first time. Louis said: “I can’t understand why people don’t vote for you – you’re an amazing singer, you owned the stage, and I’m glad you got your confidence back”. Me too!

Jamie Archer had a rather controversial song choice this week – ‘Angel Of Harlem’. I was worried for Jamie when I heard that he’d only had 24 hours to learn the song because Simon wasn’t happy with the original choice, but I thought he pulled it off. However, Louis thought that it was a bit of a cheat because the song isn’t usually played by a Big Band. Cheryl also said that the performance didn’t excite her as much as last week’s. Never mind, Jamie, at least they didn’t diss the fro!

Stacey Solomon was up next singing ‘When You Wish Upon A Star’. As I’ve said before, I’m a big fan of Stacey’s, but I didn’t think this week’s performance was as good as her previous ones. The tightness of her dress probably didn’t help! Simon felt that she needs to learn some performance skills. I agree, it would be nice to see Stacey move about a bit more but again, a loose fitting wardrobe would help with that!

Danyl Johnson sang ‘Feeling Good’ and I thought he was back on form this week. The judges seemed to enjoy it too – Dannii thought his performance ‘was very good’. So it’s straight to the top of the class for everyone’s favourite teacher.

Joe McElderry added a bit of Latin flavour to this week’s proceedings with Michael Buble’s version of ‘Sway’. It was nice to see Joe having some fun on the stage and I liked his performance. However, Simon gave it another one of his one line classics: “You’ve got about as much Latin flare as a dolphin”. Where does he think these up?!

Lucie Jones was next singing Ella Fitzgerald’s ‘My Funny Valentine’. I’d never really heard this song before, but thought that it showed off Lucie’s voice really well. Louis said: “There was no tricks, there was no dancing, there was no dancers – you did the hardest thing, it was just you and the voice, and it was an incredible performance”. So true, Louis.

Finally, bringing some more Latin flavour (if you can call it that) to the stage, were John and Edward who sang ‘She Bangs’. I thought their performance was quite surreal, the audience seemed to think so too. When referring to their singing, Simon said: “This is apalling”. He obviously couldn’t think of a one liner for that one!

The Results

After stunning performances from Westlife…

…and Michael Buble…

…the results were in. This week I thought it was the most shocking bottom two ever – Danyl Johnson and Miss Frank. The judges couldn’t make a decision, so the vote went to deadlock and unfortunately, Miss Frank recieved the least votes from the public – a real shame.

It’s rock week next week gang and we have performaces from Bon Jovi and JLS to look forward too – so go and rip your jeans in preperation!

Ciao for now!

I sometimes even feel a little envy for anyone who was around in those days to experience the music first hand, but I always have to remind myself that even today there are still some very good bands around.

A while back I reviewed a well-established one — the Count Basie Orchestra — but this time around my focus is on a new group put together by multi-talented trumpeter Eddie Allen, who is also a skilled composer and arranger. The band calls itself the Aggregation, and demonstrates with the release of its debut album, Groove’s Mood, that there is still room for innovation in today’s big-band music.

The Aggregation is a solidly professional 17-piece group that includes brass section stalwarts like Kevin Bryan, John Bailey, and Cecil Bridgewater, along with a reed section fortified by David Glasser, Howard Johnson, and Tia Fuller. There’s a lot of other talent here too, and even a genuine songbird in the person of vocalist LaTanya Hall on two tracks.

But even though the orchestra’s sound is reminiscent of the big-band era, most of the tracks on the album are a little more attuned to modern music fans. The one exception might be the old ballad, “Tenderly,” which is well worth a listen just for Allen’s trumpet solo. The rest of the album is mostly modern songs, along with a few new pieces by Allen.

Among the former are pop classics like Stevie Wonder’s “My Cherie Amour,” which showcases Hall’s vibrant vocal, and two versions of “You Are The Sunshine Of My Life.” One includes another nice vocal turn by Hall while the instrumental take includes a mellow trombone solo by Clifton Anderson. Also notable is Freddie Hubbard’s “Sky Dive,” which takes on added depth in this full band arrangement.

My favorite among Allen’s own compositions was probably “Brasilia,” which is a Samba-flavored treat led by Fuller’s alto sax work. I also found a lot to like about “The Black Coming,” Allen’s four-part orchestral suite dedicated to recognizing the struggle up from slavery. Each of the four movements are outstanding, but the best was probably “Jubilation,” which rockets along with a definite be-bop sound.

Overall, a solid collection of jazz, one that includes a little something for every type of music lover. Recommended.
