It is notoriously difficult to explain how  the world we live in is a product of processes rather than objects.   Since before the time of  the  Buddha and Heraclitus there have been individuals who have been sensitive to the concept and have tried to explain it. For example  recently these ideas have been explored  by James Whitehead and David  Bohm among others.

DEPENDENT ORIGINATION , CONDITIONED CO-PRODUCTION

This core teaching  the Buddha is difficult to fully understand at first glance, the full profundity of the doctrine takes time to unfold in the mind. The difficulty is that the teaching is describing processes which are invisible  not objects. Though it does incorporate cause and effect, of necessity, it is much more subtle and fully comprehensive.

For example take the surf around a desert island:

this being, that becomes…………………follow the surf. It is there as a result of the island having formed.

From the arising of this, that arises………follow the surf, the island is a process continually arising that creates surf; the surf itself is a process that continues

From the cessation of this, that ceases……..the island is overwhelmed by the rise in sea level, there is no surf now.

This not being, that does not become………….the island never formed, or has yet to form. there has never been surf.

The Buddha often used this fourfold structure to hang teachings on, it’s easier to follow and remember if there is a structure, especially as the teachings were never written down at the time.

For example: the Four Noble Truths leading to the elimination of suffering mirror the above:

Modern ideas about our universe are developing rapidly, and normally data are presented to show the emergence of it from the Big Bang  plotted against time. This figure is credited to Steven Hawking. It shows an origin of the universe  followed by a complex  process evolving over time.

In the context of the above diagram the graph plotted below is of the quantum fluctuations including the situation prior to the emergence of a universe.  The y axis shows  ENERGY LEVEL or TEMPERATURE which is a reflection of the energy level, there is no scale but it goes from infinitely large to infinitely small.  At the high region there is a situation with a combination of high energy and high organization.  This is beyond our comprehension at present, some have called it the Generator Of  Diversity or GOD.

On the  x axis is plotted the ENTROPY or degree of organization; highly organized to start with but with increasing disorder with time .  An example is dropping an egg on the floor and smashing it, decreasing the organization.   This increasing entropy  prevents the evolutionary process of a universe  being  reversible, one cannot put Humpty-Dumpty back together again.  Also indicated on this axis is the PROPORTION  OF MATTER to ENERGY present running from there initially being 100% energy at the left hand side,  to there being 100% matter on the right hand side of the diagram.

Definition of  Universe:

A  (nearly) self-contained entity emerging out of quantum fluctuations through which energy flows continually creating structure which evolves, so creating a process which humans experience as  time.  The example Heraclitus used was a river, the energy producing its transient structure being the potential energy of the water lifted to the watershed through evaporation from the surface of the sea.   Note also that a river is also a product of an evolutionary process over a long period of time.

A diagram of the steady state from which universes emerge and evolve.  The big bang is not a unique event but a stage in the evolution of a universe.  The energy flux driving  the events shown in the diagram exists throughout whether at high or low absolute energy levels continually creating all energy and all matter.   The origin of this flux is unknown, perhaps the equivalent of Vishnu.

The open triangle 1 4 5 8  represents the path of the evolution of a representative universe.

1  Big bang, the dimensions of the universe emerge.  For arguments sake let  it be our universe with the creation of 3 dimensions of space and also time. There is a set of infinite  possibilities that can arise during this process of individualization of a potential universe at this stage, the choice of dimensions and the setting of the constants, the initial mass/energy ratio and its configuration are influential.  How many potential dimensions are possible is unclear.  Perhaps axis is a better term to use. As well as the space  and time we recognise and related axes one can imagine one might consider including spiritual axes:

suffering/joy Buddhism

grasping/rejecting Buddhism

flight/fight  Bion

introvert/extrovert Jung

thinking/feeling Jung

sensation/feeling Jung

3 Life may or may not evolve. (See 6).

4 Let us assume that this universe continues to expand and becomes  colder and colder.  Matter and energy may be lost (or gained) through evaporation of black holes or quantum effects at temperatures approaching absolute zero. The universe may stay like this for a very long time but will eventually evaporate..

5 The universe may exchange mass or energy with other universes and lose entropy relatively rapidly.

6  Niches exist where  life can emerge.with a combination of  low entropy and relatively  low temperatures.  Complex self-replicating  structures can arise with a flow through of energy being used to sustain an evolutionary process, in a way being miniature universes . These are virtually self-contained , but linked systems driven by the energy of chemical reactions (archaebacteria), of the sun (plants) or energy generated by the metabolism of food (animals)  can evolve.  In some situations this can lead to form, sensation, perception, mental formation and consciousness (the 5 Buddhist skandhas).  Consciousness, as defined here, is the awareness of one’s presence in the universe, of other conscious entities and of a kind of  spiritual dimension one is part of.  The spiritual dimension will be discussed in a subsequent post but to paraphrase, the arising of a Buddha in a universe (which is a rare event) is Awareness becoming aware of Itself.

7  Living intelligence may give rise to machine intelligence which has a wider range of conditions over which it can function.

8 In some cases a universe will rapidly collapse, the material in it reverting to the primordial state so completing the cycle. The energy from the collapsing process being used to eliminate the entropy and regain the ordered high energy state but with loss of information.   It should be noted that self awareness allows living creatures to influence their environment and the direction of its  evolution consciously.

She is just stunning, I have always thought so! Strangely enough, when the boyfriend finds someone as hot as he does her, I go off them (jealous!) and get a little mooody- but nope.     There are no lack of ideas about that nebulous time before the big bang. What we lack is evidence.

    Before we embark upon this blog post, let’s get two things straight.

    First, I am not a theoretical physicist. So, all the ideas contained here are just my amateur speculation. Sometimes, I can barely balance my checkbook.

    Second, I have not gone woo-woo on you, even though I am going to talk about the universe and consciousness.

    Hope we have a deal. Moving on.

The Observer Effect

First we must talk about the observer effect. This is a scientific truism that says you can’t measure any system without factoring in the tool making the measurements. In other words, if you take a room’s temperature with a thermometer, some, at least a tiny portion, of the heat in the room is used to influence the thermometer. Meaning, you can’t really tell the true temperature of the room. You can get close, but you won’t know exactly because measuring the system impacts the results.

    If you were to build a model of that room’s heat distribution, you must include the thermometer in your model. Otherwise, it’s not an accurate representation.

    Our Instrument Brain

    People like to build models. It helps us understand operating systems and places that we cannot see in one glimpse. A model is basically a bird’s-eye view of any subject matter.

    It’s interesting that many of the functional models we build, such as the internet, big cities, and even the universe, all mimic our brain.

    A map of city sidewalks may really be a diagram of our brain. Let me explain.

    Imagine living a big city. With streets and light poles and people and cars and giant buildings reaching toward the clouds. You are a tiny person in this city. You walk around, you encounter people, some fascinate you, others repulse you, some teach you things you carry with you, and then a big city bus tries to plow you over while you’re on the crosswalk. You can stand on the top of buildings, and while looking down on the city, you observe that everything looks like tiny ants, all carrying out a job or task to make the city continue.

From atop that building, imagine every person below is a computer program, running through the circuitry of the streets, carrying out tasks, encountering other programs that want to join them, infect them, stop them, or assist them. Whatever.

Now, imagine that every one of those computer programs below are dendrites and neurons and electrical and chemical impulses rushing through your brain. Each neuron is seeking information, analyzing, calculating, digesting information and storing things in your biological hard drive.

    All of these aforementioned things, from the sidewalks to the brains that control our bodies to the city to the universe, seem to operate under similar principles. These are the same systems and methods used by your chemically dripping and electrically blipping brain.

    Evolution of the Human Mind

The universe began at a fixed point, exploded, then expanded outward at a very fast rate of speed.

    It’s interesting our brain origins are very similar indeed. Our brain began at a very fixed point at the end of a nerve stem. For milleniums, brains were reactionary, amphibian-like, and primitive. But then something happened. For unknown reasons, our ancestors began to think, reason, be creative, learn, and remember things.

About 200-thousand years ago, Homo Sapiens emerged following rapid brain growth in our genus. Homo Sapien brains are filled with all sorts of connections and dendrites and hemispheres. Just like models of the universe.

    I am in no way disputing the big bang theory. In fact, I’m celebrating the big bang.

    What I am saying is our models and maps of the universe seem to be really good at depicting our brain functions and evolution even better than depicting the wide expanse of space.

    Brain Blindness

    The universe and our brains both began at central points. They both expanded.

    If maps of the universe are really just maps of our brains, then seeing time before the big bang requires us to see past our brain stem.

How could we do that?

We would be forced to peer back into our long ancestry, through Australopithecus, and back into the pond and single-cellular existence.

This would require us to see back in time before the big bang of our consciousness. Essentially, we are brain blind.

    Recreating our brain system is the only way we understand the universe, or build cities, or design the internet. Because it may be the only path our brains are wired to understand.

    As long as our brain is an observational instrument in the system we are modeling, our brain is always going to be factored into the model, whether we realize it or not. Thus, models of the universe beginning with the Big Bang mirror our brain’s evolution.

    The Challenge

Is everything connected? Not at all. There are many divergent systems at work in our world. Can a laundromat wall calendar teach us things about flight patterns in China? Um, maybe. Maybe not. Everything is not connected.

I’m simply asking you to notice the models humans build, as if there are no other ways to build them, reflect our own brain’s creation and evolution.

Next time you are constructing a model of the Space Shuttle, or even using a road map to find a restaurant, try to find the similarities between your subject and your brain. The connections. The systems at work. You may be astounded at what you arrive upon.

So your next trip to P. F. Changs can become a journey of great food, and self-discovery.

Although… I would scratch that “EunHae is real” at the end because no one knows and … let’s get serious for a moment: we as shippers should differ between out fun/fantasy and the reality. In reality our EunHae are still the cutiest best friends! ^^ but spazzing over them is still so much fun!

I don’t care whether you are Agnostic or fashion yourself being an Atheist or an apostle.

I don’t know what Scriptures you read, which rites you practice, what ceremonies you participate into, what liturgies you attend, or what moral positions you hold about this or that.

Because at the end of the day, the question arises about the only thing that matters: Do you live trustfully inside the Big Bang created Universe feeling that all is right with it? Or do you fit happily inside of God’s one world?

If you feel good about either or even both ideas, then this is your space. A self selected space to co-create. So Go ahead be the best Co-creator there is, practicing kindness and Love. Live the Life…

Because this righteous living creates honest people, people who don’t waste time trying to prove that they’re right… And they keep clear of these other people who feel smug, superior, belonging to the chosen few, being members of the right faith, the proper tribe, the nation, or the lucky bastards of the right skin colour, and powerful passport holders.

We don’t care for these people. Because these people are fooling themselves believing that they will be somehow saved — no matter what their conduct on this earth, this very moment and what their impact and footprint really are.

I choose the righteous people – the simple folk – to walk together, because they know the score and have no time for bullshit.

They just try to live and love the daily mystery of Life.

That is Grace in my book.

And because they feel that they are in the loving presence of a higher intelligence. A greater being than just themselves. A universal entity or a Global Brain or a beautiful God…

They know that much. The vast majority of people on this Earth have felt this connection. Strange as it seems,. “God comes to you disguised as your life,” is what Buddha used to say.  Imagine that…

In today’s state of society, science and religiosity, there are basically three predominant world views:  A) Reality is just matter  B) Reality is just spirit  C) Religion and morality put matter and spirit together.  And this last one is the most common religious position amongst all faiths the world over…

Yet I believe there has to be another idea for us to live by, or just philosophize and maybe accept it as our Cannon — if found appropriate and useful.  This view is that the matter and spirit are together in the everlasting dance of Ying and Yang. In the sexual tension between the feminine and the masculine. In the eternal war of Good and Evil. In the Light and darkness foreplay… each and every day and night.

To me the material world has always been the Spiritual realm. Because in my experience — it is this earth and through this bodily matter that the Spirit is revealed.  This is the place where we all dwell. This is our hell and paradise intertwined in the eternal game of shadows…

You don’t need religion to put them together, because they already are.  One nature indivisible, is what all the Great incarnate teachers taught us: Socrates, Jesus, Buddha, your own self manifesting in those fleeting moments of Grace — to name just a few…

What’s the most frustrating time when you’re at office? Every time when you’re sleepy and stuck with your tasks. I didn’t say every time is a hell, but whenever you’re in a good mood, every time is a paradise! Para-para-paradise~~~ (uhm, just humming Coldplay’s song). Sometimes, we got attacked by bored-time in our office, and what we do just added more bored-time to everything. And what will we say to the ladies? “I’M SLEEPY” or “I CAN’T STAND WITH THIS STUFF ANYMORE” or “ALMOST DIED BECAUSE OF BORED TIME”, etc. Yeah, I’m a victim too so I can write this…

Maybe it can’t help too much, since I write it for the first time so let’s start with the simplest answer. The first one.

I–as a scientist for myself–found that MUSIC can kill my bored times. Add all kinds of music, when you’re almost gave up, try to play what do you want to hear. Add some instrumentals, when you need some quite time, just play it! Add some RnB or Jazz, Blues, when you’re enjoying your fun stuff, play them to colorize your day! I’m not a musician (I’m an independent Scientist! #LOL) but I found some cool music to accompany me at office. Let’s start with the most repeated songs. Believe me, my playlist on iTunes filled with too much music. Just take top 10 most repeated songs (part one) so I don’t have to make this post becomes super loooooooong….

Here are my top 10 songs (Part One) :

1. Tsukigata by Sumita Wataru (Instrumental) : I found this sweety one from http://www.chikudo.com. Enter the Tsukigata Photo Collection, you’ll find some piece-quite piano instrumental and you’ll get Japan’s sense. I play this song when I need to hear something along side my normally stuff.
2. Lies by Big Bang : Who doesn’t know Big Bang? Who doesn’t know one of their hit song? No need to ask me when I hear this song, of course when I’m sleepy or need something to gain my spirit.
3. Crayon by G-Dragon : same with Lies, this is ‘wake-up-idea’ song. I’m workin’ in hurry (sometimes) and just play this song to gain some strength to your feeling… hahahaha
4. Habanera by Taro Hakase : ah, this sweet song, it’s imaginative song. You’re working and thinking something about your life, just play this song! Trust me, it’s beautiful. Beware, this song’s gonna make you sleepy!
5. All Day I Think Of You by 2PM : Nah! Brand new song from 2PM, I love the orchestra effect and sexy voices from all member. It suits your hurry-time-stuff. Dramatic effect!
6. Fire by 2NE1 : Eh eh eh eh eh eeeh~~~ 2NE1!!! This song is gonna keep you alive in front of your computer. Ha!
7. Heaven by Big Bang : same with Fire, the coolest one, my favorite one~!
8. How Could I by Yiruma : It’s romantic-effect song. I just turned up this song when I missed someone over there… Eumhwehwehwe~~~ no need to know lah! :p
9. Turning Page by Sleeping at Last : working freshly in the morning, KrisStew actually knows a good song for her movie.
10. Grace by Michael W. Smith : Don’t forget to get gospel songs to your playlist. Don’t mix it up with another song, take it separately and make a new playlist to put your gospel songs. Once you hear this song, oh sure you know how lovely is our God. Grateful…
