The biggest and best version of this piano led pounder. On the same 12″ is the absolutely legendary “Yes To Satan”. Sadly, after this stellar release it all went a bit downhill to Ravey-Pop schlock.. Still, with a release like this, I guess you’ve already made your mark!

This track is just so under-rated it’s not true.personally i think this release is blinding. On one side you have the vocal house classic ” i know i can count on you ” a real Sasha favourite and just a beautiful track.

Then on the other side you have yes to satan. Top Buzz played this as his opening tune at Fantazia New Years Eve 1991/92 at Exeter Westpoint and the place went wild. Nice dark samples and very hardcore beats with a massive techno influence.So in truth this release has it all.

Despues del éxito cosechado en 2007 tras el lanzamiento de Kabul, los ingleses Curl & Dean a Big Square con otro gran lanzamiento. Esta producción tiene pequeños toques de Big Beat y Progressive Breaks, con una batería y unas percusiones perfectamente rítmicas y muy movidas, una linea de bajo pesada y progresiva acompañada de pequeñas lineas sintéticas y ácidas, pequeños riffs de trompetas y guitarras. Sin duda una producción muy bien cuidada y con un toque sucio muy bueno.

2. Curl & Dean – Snow Buddha (Future Funk Squad Remix)

Con una batería de librería pero bien montada para esta producción, los señores FFS nos presentan esta producción muy a su estilo, bajos progresivos y profundos, grandes sintes acidos y percusivos y como no un ambiente cuidado hasta el más mínimo detalle, los efectos destacan, grandes ecos y filtros de batería, una pista bastante tranquila para un momento de relajación en la pista de baile.

3. Curl & Dean – Snow Buddha (M.I. Loki Remix)

Desde inglaterra estos chicos nos han preparado una producción bastante curiosa, con una batería propia de una pista Big Beat, con grandes toques percusivos y perfectamente montada, nos presentan una linea de bajo muy juguetona y perfectamente procesada, con grandes toques de electro, perfectos efectos en la pequeña vocal del tema, y grandes melodias acidas para acompañas los bajos, sin duda alguna una pista muy fresca.

A festival that can’t be missed….see you there!

my dear fellow readers,
my last 3 days were a bit like a rollercoaster-ride – huge downs & ups in several different lifesituations and I wasn´t able to blog anything during this turbulent ride.
for now it seems it stopped so far & here we go with an older tune from 2000 I did with my good friend & PUCH-mate mario christofferson (aka dub mars) which describes this ride very nice in a musical way.

the tune is called ‘mad man´s blues’ and can be filed under illbient, big beats, dopebeats.

Forss (a.k.a. Eric Wahlforss of Sweden) is one of the coolest electronic musicians I’ve heard in a while. I don’t even know exactly where to categorize him. The songs on his album, Soulhack, range from slow, groovy acid jazz to crashing big beats, with bits that approach drum and bass. Each song is lavishly layered with complex little tweaks and twitches and samples and fills, most strikingly in “Flickermood,” which is basically just one bar of funky beat being deliciously stretched out, abused and twisted in every which way for three minutes. He also expertly conjures up atmosphere, running the gamut from sinister to playful to other-worldly. Not only is the production rewardingly complex and interesting, but the songs themselves are just extremely catchy. He hosts the entire album and a number of remixes for listening and download on his site — although it looks like the ‘download’ link gets you an uncompressed .aiff file, so maybe you have to ‘buy’ to get an MP3, if large files bother you. Regardless, give him a listen.

Quizás, el nombre de Bentley Rhythms Ace no os suene a la mayoría debido a que este grupo ha estado desaparecido de la escena electrónica 9 años, pero antaño, este grupo fue uno de los máximos exponentes del mejor sonido Big Beats junto a artistas como: The Prodigy, The Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim, The Crystal Method o Propellerheads entre otros. Ahora, tras no públicar nada desde el 2000, vuelven con un nuevo Album.

Este grupo británico formado en Birmingham (UK), a mediados de los años 90, esta compuesto por Richard March y Mike Stokes, fueron descubiertos por el sello inglés Skint, su Album debut salio al mercado en 1997 bajo el sello Parlophone (se llegó a editar 9 veces, bajo sellos como EMI y Skint) y se titulo con el mismo nombre del grupo, fue un rotundo éxito que llenó las pistas de baile de todo el mundo y sirvió como música para un mítico anuncio de Axe.

Su segundo Album no llegaría hasta 3 años después, pero no fue tan sonado como el primero y al poco tiempo se separaron.

Ahora, 9 años después y según su fiel amigo Cut La Roc (Rocstar), ha salido a la venta a través de iTunes su nuevo Album, el cual estará a la venta en los demás sistemas de compra muy pronto, además, también ha informado que a partir de ahora sus Live Acts se actualizaran a la nueva época por la que pasa el sonido Breakbeat.

UK based DJ, musicians and production duo Al and El whose cheeky humour and dancefloor production skills create a unique sound. Essentially an electronic breakbeat act, they include elements of jazz and particularly lounge music into their style. They also draw on other styles such as big band and indian. The result is a contemporary, often instrumental music that is much used by Games, Film and TV producers (FIFA, Adidas etc) and consequently many Skeewiff tracks will be subliminally familiar to a wide audience…They have also collaborated with 60’s legends like Hammond organist Alan Hawkshaw and remixed many similar acts like Lemon or Ursula 1000.

Mixing big beat, jive, eastern and jazz, this album is very cosmopolitan with a wicked sense of humour. It opens with glorious cinematic strings and swinging jive rhythms (Smash and Grab), which later meet with swaggering guitar riffs (Giggity), rolling basslines (Light the Fuse, Man of Constant Sorrow), twinkling keys (Triumph Stag) and smoking grooves (Husky). Skeewiff regulars Steve Murray and Peter Martin shine on vocals and bass, as does singer Charlise Rookwood who is ever so gloriously strong (Love Power), and Alan ‘The Hawk’ Hawkshaw is at his always best on keyboards.

Del álbum The fat of the land (XL, 1997)

No es la mejor canción de los británicos. Ni la que más me gusta. De hecho, tiene una cobertura accidentalmente kitsch que hace que baje muchos puntos dentro de los temas del disco. Pero es su más polémica… ¿canción?. Y esto con tan sólo dos frases de texto (“Change my pitch up, smack my bitch up”, que podríamos traducir como “Sube mi ritmo, azota a mi perra”) considerada ofensiva y peligrosa por el feminismo más acérrimo de la época. Esta cuestión está detallada (con mayor o menor éxito) en este artículo de wikipedia. Personalmente pienso que les vino muy bien la propaganda. Los grupos religiosos y de presión hacen a veces de multiplicadores de determinados hechos que no habrían tenido tanta repercusión si se hubieran obviado.

Volviendo a la música en sí, se trataba del tercer álbum del grupo, el que les permitiría llegar a un público masivo y no sólo a los seguidores de las raves. La portada, por cierto, es genial. Eran habituales las fotografías de espacios naturales, donde a menudo se celebraban las raves, así que los discos empezaron a parecerse a las revistas del National Geographic. Recuerdo que los vi por primera vez en Metrópolis (un programa de la 2ª cadena de Televisión Española sobre arte contemporáneo), y que me indignó que se situase a esta música en la línea de las instalaciones, performances y demás artes plásticas y no a la denominada habitualmente “contemporánea”, de la que entonces yo era firme defensor. Pero había una energía, una actitud que conectaba directamente con el punk de los 70 en los vídeos de Firestarter o Breathe que no dejaba de atraerme.

Se trata de una música muy sencilla, generada a base de samplers entrecortados y mezclados (lo que se dio en llamar “breakbeat“) y que a mediados de los 90 se había visto influenciado por el rock pesado, alejándose del constante sonido del bombo presente en el house o el techno y extremando los sonidos de los sintetizadores. La voz simplemente lanza los breves mensajes sin apenas entonación, como si fuesen proclamas. La presencia de una voz femenina mediado el tema con cierta sonoridad oriental suaviza la tensión, creando el ambiente necesario para subir la intensidad al final.

La música de The Prodigy no podía faltar en ninguna de las raves que a lo largo de los 90 abundaban por su tierra. Es más, serían el paradigma de lo que se conoció como “música rave”, si bien este término no define un tipo de música concreto.

Sobre el fenómeno social que supusieron este tipo de fiestas, el año pasado estuve leyendo Estado Alterado. La historia de la cultura del éxtasis y del acid house de Matthew Collin y John Godfrey (Alba Editorial, 2002), un fantástico análisis sociológico muy bien documentado que pone en el punto de mira el inmovilismo social predominante (en su caso, en Gran Bretaña). Es una pena que una idea tan bonita como la de una fiesta libre, gratuita, en la que se reinventaban los ideales hippies de paz y amor (sí, con consumo de drogas, como en los 60) se haya visto reducida a cenizas por la inmovilidad del puritanismo y la necesidad de conservación de nuestras (detestables) estructuras sociales.

I know you now hear bits of this song all over the place including movies, commercials, and cartoons. It is one of those songs. Good beat. Good energy. No real lyrics. Nothing deep. Just an adrenaline rush of sound. Why not use it for everything?

Hola estimados lectores, no se si se han preguntado si la musica que acualmente escuchamos es producto de nuevas ideas o es simplemente reciclaje (Salven al planeta reciclen!!!!!!)  Por que lo digo ? …..  Hace unos ayeres la campaña promocional de Volkswagen ( Como quiero a mi Jetta ! jejeje) promocionaba su nuevo Golf con este comercial :

Pero … resulto ser un homenaje del  grupo Mint Royale a Gene Kelly.  Mint Royale, es un grupo de música Big Beat de Manchester, Inglaterra.  El grupo originalmente fue formado por Neil Claxton y Chris Baker, pero este ultimo abandono la agrupacion y Claxton continuo bajo el nombre de Mint Royale.

La banda original comenzó en 1997, se especializaron en remixes y comenzaron a ser conocidos a partir de su mix de “Tequila”, de Terrorvisión.

Fueron apoyados por el guru del Dance británico Norman Cook, más conocido como Fatboy Slim que incluía piezas en su trabajo, esto creo una confusión, ya que los dos tenían estilos muy similares y algunas personas pensaron que Mint Royale era un seudónimo de Norman Cook.

El primer álbum “On the Ropes” salio a finales de 1999, a pesar de que no fue un éxito algunas de sus canciones alcanzaron cierta fama gracias a que se usaron algunas de las canciones en series de televisión, películas y algunos programas.

El segundo álbum “Dancehall Places” se lanza en el 2002 para después comenzar una gira de shows en directo por el Reino Unido. Volvieron de la gira en Abril del 2004 comenzando a escribir el tercer álbum, que después de ciertos problemas con el fundador de la banda original Chris Baker que retraso el trabajo, lograron terminarlo y publicarlo en enero del 2005 con el titulo “See You In The Morning “; en el 2005 crearon “Waiting in the Rain” un remix de la famosa canción Singin’ in the Rain o Cantando bajo la lluvia que se usó para el comercial del Volkswagen Golf GTI. Alcanzo el puesto #20 en las listas de Reino Unido y en  el 2007 sacan el álbum “Pop is…”.

N.A.S.A.(North America South America) היא קולקטיב של מוזיקאים הנפרשת על פני קשת רחבה של ז ‘אנרים מוזיקליים, המתרכזת סביב Squeak E. Clean (סם שפיגל) האמריקאי ו- DJ Zegon (זי גונזאלס) הברזילאי.
סם וזי התחברו דרך התשוקה שלהם למוזיקה והחליטו לעשות תקליט עם המוסיקאים החביבים עליהם.

הרעיון של N.A.S.A. היה להביא אנשים מעולמות שונים יחד דרך אהבת המוזיקה כך נוצרו שיתופי פעולה מטורפים כמו קרן או (Yeah Yeah Yeahs), דיויד בייראן (Talking Heads), טום וויטס, Ol’ Dirty Bastard ועוד רשימה ארוכה של אמנים.
ההרכב מתעלם מכל הגבולות כמו הז ‘אנר, הפוליטיקה, הגיאוגרפיה, כתוצאה מכך יצא אוסף מטורף ואקלקטי ביותר של מוזיקאים באלבום אחד שהוקלט במשך 5 שנים!

The fragrant Bea Van Der Maat - singer with Won Ton Ton

Won Ton Ton’s singer Bea Van Der Maat  is probably the reason to explore this Belgian Eighties outfit.

After Chow-Chow, the forerunner to Won Ton Ton split,  Bea started a career on television and sang in the LSP Band. Her popularity got the group a record contract. In 1987 the group reformed – under the name Won Ton Ton – and released the single included here - “I lie and I cheat”.

Interesting for its self-destructive lyrical theme, this song became a big hit, both in Belgium (n° 10) and in Holland (n° 13). The successors, “Hey Marlene” and the rather prurient “Can I come near you” were less successful.

Bea Van Der Maat ’s commitment to the band was spasmodic – pursuing a parallel television career (making the move to VTM and presenting “Tien om te zien” – a program carrying the more commercially oriented Flemish music)  and she also brought up two children.

In 1996 she released a comeback album of Triphop music “Thin skinned” that got good reviews but sold poorly.

Breathe was a London-based musical group formed in the early 1980s. Originally a larger, six-person band called “Catch 22”, they trimmed down to a quartet to record the album All That Jazz in 1987. This contained their two best-known hits, “How Can I Fall?” and “Hands to Heaven”. The latter charted on the Billboard Hot 100 at #2 in 1988, and at #4 in the UK. Bassist Micheal Delahunty left the group in 1989 and the remaining three followed “All that Jazz” with the lesser known “Peace of Mind” in early 1990.

Despite having all the pop potential of an Air Supply, they were destined to remain a cult band – which is why they are here. 

Big Sound Authority were an English pop band. The group was formed in 1983 by Tony Burke and Julie Hadwin who both took turns as lead singers. They signed to Source Records and released one album ‘An Inward Revolution’ before splitting up in 1986.  

Box of Toys were born from the ashes of A Select Committee (1981-83), a powerpop band formed by Brian Jones, Tim Lees (both later of Something French), Steve Downey (later of Come in Tokyo) and Andy Redhead (on drums, percussion and synth). Even before the band broke up in 1983,in 1982 Redhead teamed up with Phil Martin (on sax, keys and vocals, formerly of 3D), Roy Campbell (on bass and vocals) and Brian Atherton (on vocals and synth, later of ‘The Light’). Even before their first single the quartet recorded a session with the ever prescient John Peel in April 1983.

In 1983 ’Precious Is the Pearl’ (included here) and When Daylight Is Over (Sunset) appeared on their second single (12” version, together with a second b-side, It Goes Without Saying). The band split in late 1984, and Andy Redhead joined a later version of  3D.

Cactus World News was an Irish rock band formed in Dublin in 1984. The original members included: Frank Kearns, Eoin McEvoy, Wayne Sheehy, and Fergal MacAindris. Their early influences were The Clash, The Ramones, Talking Heads, U2, The Waterboys, and R.E.M.

Their first recording, and best known song, was The Bridge. They performed at the Self Aid concert in Dublin on May 17, 1986. The two 12″ tracks here fought hard to avoid the charts and were destined for obscurity – but not in these parts.

One of my favourite guitar tracks from the Eighties comes from another widescreen Irish band, ‘Blue in Heaven’  who assumed legend-like shape in 1985-6 although unfairly lumped in with the ‘Big Beat’ movement and so suffered by comparison to stadium-fillers like Simple Minds, U2 and even the Waterboys.

They released 2 full length albums on Island Records: All the Gods Men (1985) and Explicit Material (1986). They also released several singles and EPs. ‘Across my Heart’ is their masterpiece. Judge for yourself – it still sounds wonderful.

Vincent Montana Jnr is part of the wider Philly soul-disco scene working as a composer, arranger, bandleader, percussionist and producer. His credits include MFSB, Salsoul Orchestra, Goody Goody and many others but ‘Heavy Vibes’ is a particular favourite with its jazz vibes and light touch – particularly enjoyable on the extended Paul Simpson’s club mix here.

Real Life was a Melbourne-based Australian New Wave band that made waves with both their debut single, ‘Send Me an Angel’ (1983) and with ‘Catch Me, I’m Falling’ (1984), both of which were featured on the band’s debut album Heartland (1983).

The band originally consisted of David Sterry (lead vocals/guitar), Richard Zatorski (violin/keyboard), Alan Johnson (bass) and Danny Simcic (drums). Steve Williams (keyboard) replaced Zatorski in 1986, who was then replaced by George Pappas in 1996 after a long hiatus of band activity.

This 12″ version of ‘Send me an Angel’ is just one of seventeen versions of the song – and probably the best.

The Prime Movers were a three piece band from the greater Los Angeles area. During the mid 80s The Prime Movers made the big(gish) time after releasing the critically acclaimed LP “Museum” on their own Birdcage Records.

They signed to Island Records and  two singles, ’On the Trail’ and ‘Dark Western Night’ entered the UK charts.

Nothing can be found about ‘Whirl’ whose sole 12″ release ‘Clear’ is included – suffice to say that it represents a great piece of Eighties Indie rock – with just enough melody to make it worthy of reprising here.

Greetings! We’ve added another old tune for free download from Fairtilizer. It’s from an EP released in 2001 called Dust: the remixes and the track is Dust – Psalmistry Remix. Psalmistry were an excellent breakbeat/hiphop crew based in Bristol. This remix sounds very fresh despite being from 2001; check out the bass sound. Wobbly!
