I was going through some of my photos from last year’s trip to London, looking for a series to frame and hang in my house. And even though it’s kinda gimmicky, I decided to go with black and white with a spot color on each. The first four will hang together, the one of the bus has been up for months now. Red definitely seems to be the color of London, well, for me anyway.

A escuridão deixava a cidade mágica.

Captava sons, cheiros e luzes.

Sorte minha me lembrar.

Puxava-me pro chão, pois flutuo com facilidade.

Atravessamos a ponte.

If you are American, like me, and are planning to spend some time in London then there’s a lot you m

If you are American, like me, and are planning to spend some time in London then there’s a lot you may want to know. Nothing can take away from the actual experience of living here. No one can teach you that. Yet, if you are a rookie in the UK or making arrangements to study here abroad or live here for a time – there are some interesting tidbits, pitfalls and surprises that will ultimately become part of the best stories of your life.

I’ve been living here for five years. Back when I began studying here, I only knew London by its landmarks, rituals and monarchs. No one who arrives in central London is going to be very surprised to see the changing of the guards or Big Ben. They might be intrigued or excited, but not surprised.

What might prove to be a revelation, however, is the quiet. Now I don’t mean to paint a picture straight from The Sound of Music, with some nymph-like woman twirling around on a hilltop. London is a major city with traffic, rush hours, homeless people, tourists and criminals – make no mistake about it. Yet, there are subtleties that sneak up on the unsuspecting newcomer. For example, during rush hour in the city, you will almost never hear a car honk its horn. If you are from Minnesota, that might not be a huge surprise. But I’m from New York, and it’s not possible to walk through that asphalt jungle at 9AM on a Monday without hearing a cacophony of car horns. Every car is speaking, and though each one sounds different they are basically saying the same thing. ‘Get out of my way!’ Yet in London, a car horn is a rarity. You may hear one ever so often – but even then – other drivers are looking at the trigger happy horn blower as if he has utterly lost his mind.

Another reality is that Englanders, as a rule, are very reserved people. That is not to say that there aren’t scuffles, arguments, scenes, tirades and even the occasional fight. Still, on average, voices are at a moderate pitch. If you are from a major city in America, this may take getting used to. In my first year in London, I was always asking people to repeat themselves. I was also very aware of the stares I received whenever I spoke in public – the loud New Yorker that I am. I’ve since learned to lower my voice, so much so that when I return home, my family and friends are asking me for the first two days, ‘Why are you talking so softly? What’s wrong with you? Are you sick?’

These aspects of quietude gives London an overwhelming calmness that presents itself when least expected. One of my favourite hangouts was Leicester Square, which for all intents and purposes reminds one of Times Square if it was scaled down by about 60%. But right in the centre of the large movie theatres, restaurants and tourist shops is a tiny little park with trees, benches and statues. And though there is touristy mayhem and a vendor jamboree going on right outside the park, stepping in it is like entering a vacuum of hushed tranquillity. It’s as if the noise cannot penetrate the invisible walls of the park.

There are ever more interesting aspects about the journey that is England to be revealed in future blogs; as they are, even now, being revealed to me. Stay tuned for more. And remember, you don’t have to be American to relate to these experiences, and you don’t have to live in England to understand that every place on earth has its own special nuances. And the world keeps going ‘round.

Here are the cool cards Mario sent when I finally got off my lazy butt and sent him a SASE:

First the 2009 Upper Deck Football Heroes...

I’m trying to spread the love by sending and trading most of the cards received from Mario to those who will appreciate them more than I could ever hope to. Paul Hornung is offered to Heartbreaking Cards of Staggering Genius, and Tony Dorsett is now officially offered to BigD of Hey That’s Mine. I’m giving both Big Bens to a Steelers fan I know (other one coming up). The Maynard/Biletnikoff is the only for sure keeper from this scan, although the Alan Page is tempting, to get a TTM auto maybe. How epic would that look?

As it is, Alan Page, Plax, Calvin Johnson, Romo/Aikman, and the volleyball dude are available.

Beethoven, Florence Nightingale, and a couple Chicago legends...

Bobby Hull and Mike Ditka are the reason I got these cards in the first place, so they ain’t going anywhere. I dunno about the historical peoples though.

Kristi Yamaguchi and some rock-headed Presidents...

I used to have a crush on Kristi in my teenage years. Heh… :d

Do the Presidents look a lil’ toony to anyone else, or is it just me?

Yeah Woodstock! Woo!

Are there any bloggers out there who were at the original?

This is also going to my Steeler fan friend.

Now we get to the higher end, a rare taste for me. But a yummy taste it is.

Prime Jersey or Patch (whichever you prefer) #ed /50

This one I offered up for BigD’s Hines Ward collecting son. I got a little something for the whole gang, if they want ‘em, that is.

And if they can wait till 2010 to pull off the trade. I’m a slow trader (slow at doing nearly everything, really) to start with, but I think I’ve got trades going with half the card bloggers right now. At least it seems that way, not to mention McCann’s great card blogger Secret Santa thing. I’m very excited about dat though, and hopefully the person I drew will be too.

Prime Time Prime (Jumbo) Jersey #ed 3/5!

I’m not trading away this one, I really like this one. It’s purrty. I may have to sell it at some point sadly though. I’m poor like dirt. I have iffy mental health as an excuse, but I’ve got to try and make good, the sooner the better, and that’ll take some moneys to start with.

Incidentally, if you’d like to commission a sketch card, gimme a shout. You can see a few recent examples on my blog. I’m okay I guess, especially with portraityness.

Enough shameless and very awkwardly done self-promotion. Last card!

More prime jersey patches, going way back with Frank Gifford #ed /25

That was a heckuva box Mario busted, all three game-used being of the prime jersey variety, if not the sickest of patches. I like Absolute Memorabilia, one day I will be able to afford a box of it without breaking the bank, or even poking it softly. I have no intention of being a poor bum my whole life.

That’s all for what I got from big man of the blogosphere. Maybe I’ll win some stuff from him again (and sign up for Card Corner Club @VOTC) if I can figure out what the heck happened with my Ning password. :/

Oh yeah, congrats to Real Salt Lake on taking down the evil empire of David Beckham and Landon Donovan. I hope it doesn’t effect the value of my Beckham jersey card though (scans to come when I get it scanned).

And big ups for Matthew Stafford showing some Leftwich-ian toughness in getting the win against the Browns in a surprising shootout.

Until our next…(Besos)

1. Atlanta Hawks (11-3)- Three impressive wins over the Blazers, Heat, and Rockets keeps them in the top spot. Great matchup for the Southeast division lead on Thanksgiving night vs. Magic will be a real treat.

A Thanksgiving night matchup between the Hawks and Magic on TNT is must see TV

2. Orlando Magic (11-3)- A big jump to the number 2 spot this week with wins over Charlotte, Oklahoma City, Boston, and Toronto. Battle with the Hawks will be a true test for this very deep Magic team.

3. Phoenix Suns (11-3)- Lost a step this week with a loss to the Hornets, but still went 3-1. I hope this team has the defense to step up for it’s offense occasionally, otherwise the Suns could burn out quickly.

4. Los Angeles Lakers (10-3)- Had a great week with the return of Pau Gasol, a centerpiece of this championship team. They should have another undefeated week with games vs. New York, New Jersey, and Oklahoma City.

5. Dallas Mavericks (10-3)- Another strong week from Dirk and the Mavs have them a spot in my top 5. The week included wins over the Kings, Spurs, and an inspiring OT win in Milwaukee.

6. Cleveland Cavaliers (10-4)- A 3-1 week against all sub .500 teams wasn’t all that impressive, especially when the loss was by almost 20 to an awful Washington club. The Cavs need to be more consistent, and will look to be this week against Dallas on Saturday night.

7. Boston Celtics (10-4)- With losses at home to both Atlanta and Orlando, is there a power shift brewing in the East? Should go 3-0 with games against Philly, Toronto, and a struggling Miami squad this week.

8. Portland Trailblazers (10-5)- After winning six straight, a loss in Atlanta seemed to take a lot out of them. They followed the loss with a win against awful Detroit and a loss in Golden State.

9. Denver Nuggets (9-4)- A loss to the Clippers set them back a bit, but they’re still a relatively consistent team. The week ahead brings match-ups with New Jersey, Minnesota, and New York. Any losses there, and a big drop in these rankings will follow.

10. Milwakee Bucks (8-3)- Besides a heartbreaking OT loss to Dallas, this team has continued to impress with Jennings (or Sessions apparently haha) leading the way. A very tough stretch follows with games against San Antonio, the suddenly hot Hornets, Thunder, and Magic.

11. Miami Heat (8-5)- The Heat cooled down this week with losses to the Thunder, Hawks, and Raptors. A nice win against the surging Hornets kept them afloat. Tough week ensues with match-ups against the Celtics and Magic.

12. Houston Rockets (8-6)- Houston had a .500 week, going 2-2. Although, both losses were to the number 1 and 3 teams in the power rankings. The Rockets need to step it up this week against Dallas, Oklahoma City, and the Spurs.

13. Utah Jazz (7-6)- Had a great week finishing 3-0 with wins against Toronto, San Antonio, and Detroit. Utah needs to prove they can beat a winning team though, with not a single win vs. a .500 team or better yet this season.

14. Oklahoma City Thunder (7-7)- Probably the most frustrating team in the NBA so far this season. Every time they look ready to jump in the rankings, they lose. ESPN matchup with the Bucks on friday night should be an interesting game.

15. Chicago Bulls (6-6)- One of the most inconsistent teams in the league, the Bulls are right where they should be, at .500. Three tough road games will show just where they are so far, as they face the Blazers, Jazz, and Bucks.

16. New Orleans Hornets (6-9)- Rounding out the top 16 is the young New Orleans Hornets. Now, I understand that they are only 6-9, and there are about 4 teams that probably deserve the spot more, but not many teams had a better week than the Hornets. With impressive wins against the Clippers, Suns, and Hawks, the Hornets went 3-1 and are definitely playing better ball than the Spurs, Pacers, Raptors, and Kings.

N-are rost.

Despre asta e vorba.

This weekend’s game between the suddenly struggling Atlanta Falcons and the ice cold New York

This weekend’s game between the suddenly struggling Atlanta Falcons and the ice cold New York Giants, is in my opinion, the game of the week. Yes, I know that I’m probably a little biased here (because I’m a falcons fan and I’m actually going to the game, thanks frank!), but what other game this weekend can virtually destroy either team’s playoff hopes with a loss. The Giants come off their worst 4 game stretch in years, with losses to New Orleans, Arizona, Philly, and San Diego. Infact, their only win this season against an even remotely close to winning team was against Dallas. This team needs to beat the Falcons to show that they can beat teams other than the Cheifs, Bucs, Raiders, and Redskins. The bye-week could not have worked out any better for the Giants as they look to snap their losing streak and stick it to the playoff hopefull Falcons.

Atlanta has also been struggling immensely to get it’s offense together, and the loss of Michael Turner is a brutal blow to the backfield, especially since the lightning fast Jerious Norwood is already out with injury. Enter Jason Snelling, the third option at half back this season. He will need to step it up and get past the Giants D for Atlanta to have a good chance at winning Sunday. But, there isn’t a player more important to this team right now than Matt Ryan. He will look to get out of the funk that his brought his team losses to Dallas, New Orleans, and Carolina. Ryan already has more INT’s this season than he did all of last year (12 to 11), and he will need to play much better for the Falcons to beat the Giants.

Jason Snelling must fill in well for the injured Pro Bowler Michael Turner if Atlanta wants to win Sunday

I honestly think that this game will come down to who wants it more, and who NEEDS it more. And unfortunately for me, I think the Giants may need it more with a tougher upcoming schedule. But C’mon, I can’t pick against my own team. Prediction: Atlanta 34 Giants 24

Oxford – “a bookish kind of place”

Oxford is a conservative, bookish kind of place where intellectual ideals are the common currency and pursuit of excellence the holy grail.

The Bodleian Library

Old Schools Quadrangle

Was will man mehr?…

Kulinarisches

West Cornwall Pasty Co.

The British Library – The world’s knowledge

The British Library - The world's knowledge

Neben den dauerhaften gibt es auch wechselnde Ausstellungen im Angebot, momentan zum Beispiel die beiden wirklich ansprechend konzipierten Points of View – Capturing the 19th Century in Photographs und In a Bloomsbury Square: T.S. Eliot the Publisher. ^^

Idea Stores – Library Learning Information

The Idea Store proposals are designed to draw all three themes together in a way that captures the best traditions of the library movement and the education sector but presents them in an exciting way, one that draws in new users and retains existing users. The Idea Stores will also be located in a different way – at the heart of our neighbourhood shopping centres, near or beside supermarkets wherever possible. We want a visit to the library and lifelong learning centres to become a regular part of people’s lives – to act as a focus as well as a resource for the whole community. The Idea Stores will engage people our current facilities don’t reach.

idea store ohne "library"

I’m not going to pretend I know a huge amount about politics. However, I’m not one of those people

I’m not going to pretend I know a huge amount about politics. However, I’m not one of those people who sits in a pub complaining about the price of a pint, the lack of jobs, unreliable trains, and then says ‘But I don’t do politics.’ I know it affects me, and I am aware of its importance in the functionality of this country.

I think most people know decisions made in parliament affect them, so in a way it’s strange that so few know exactly what goes on behind those parliamentary doors. Come to think of it, most people probably didn’t know you could take a free tour to find out, either…

Entering the area around the Palace of Westminster (also known as the Houses of Parliament) and its additional buildings (such as Westminster Hall) is like going through airport security. When you do get in, you are given a photo ID to wear around your neck, and told you must be accompanied by a pass holder at all times.

I was taken to Westminster Hall, and as I sat waiting for the tour to begin, I started thinking. It’s funny how, despite the fact I’ve lived in the south-east of England my whole life, there are so many places like this in London I’ve never visited. I guess when you live so close to something you don’t feel obligated to make the effort. In the same way that most New Yorkers have never been up the Empire State Building.

The tour itself was superb – educational, yes, but somehow still extremely interesting. I was shown around the House of Commons, House of Lords, the Queen’s Robing Room, the Prince of Wales’ chamber, and got an up-close look at some significant things associated with parliament. For instance, we saw the original copy of the Commons notes when Guy Fawkes was first found to be plotting to blow up parliament. The Queen’s throne in the House of Lords was obviously very impressive, as was standing in the exact place Gordon Brown would when speaking in the House of Commons.

Our guide was extremely knowledgeable, and apart from his phone ringing during a minute’s silence for Remembrance Day, was brilliant. He explained the origins of parliamentary rituals that I’ve always known but never quite understood, like Black Rod banging on the door of the Commons. He was happy to answer any bizarre, irrelevant questions from members of the tour group, and even did so with a straight face.

After it finished, I felt really pleased that I’d done it. It was enlightening, interesting, and wasn’t so long that it became boring in the least. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to find out a bit more about what goes on in those buildings we see on TV most days, and how the country is run. After all, we do live here.

More about this free tour – and the one including a tour of Big Ben – can be found here and on the UK Parliament site.

1. Atlanta Hawks (8-2)- Originally I had the Hawks in the number 2 spot. That is until I saw that ESPN.com and NBA.com had them at number one, and as the best team in the NBA. So, how could I go against my own team? This is probably the best team Atlanta’s had since the Braves of the late 90’s.

Featured in what is probably top 5 creepiest pictures of all-time, Steve Nash is off to another great year.

2. Phoenix Suns (9-2)- About on par with the Hawks, this team has played some amazing ball. Steve Nash has lit it up again this season and is an early MVP candidate.

3. Los Angeles Lakers (7-3)- The Lakers come in at number 3 (even though they did beat both Phoenix and Atlanta) because of their bad losses against the Nuggets and Rockets. Devner had lost 3 straight, looking awful, and absolutely gave it to Kobe and Co. on Friday night.

4. Boston Celtics (8-3)- After consecutive losses to Atlanta and Indiana, all is not well in Boston right now. We’ll see how they bounce back against Golden State and Orlando this week.

5. Miami Heat (7-2)- Dwayne Wade shows us how dominant and clutch he can be game after game, and year after year. He leads Miami to another hot start with a huge 3 to keep the Nets winless.

6. Portland Trailblazers (8-3)- Winners of 6 straight, Portland has caught fire. Like I said in the week 1 rankings; the sky is the limit for this team. A great matchup in Atlanta tomorrow night will test just how hot these Blazers are.

7. Cleveland Cavaliers (7-3)- An impressive win over Orlando has Lebron and the Cavs back to looking legitament. Since the 0-2 start, theyve gone 7-1…

8. Denver Nuggets (7-3)- A huge win against the Lakers should get them back on the winning track. Carmelo showed Kobe just how amazing he can be, now he just needs to be more consistent.

9. Orlando Magic (7-3)-I’m not sure exactly how good this team will be. They’ve been very unpredictable but should become stronger when Rashard Lewis returns. Big matchup with Boston will give them a good road test.

10. Dallas Mavericks (7-3)- A very strong team with great veteran leadership takes care of the team’s they are supposed to beat (Minnesota and Detroit), yet finds a way to lose to the struggling Spurs.

11. Milwaukee Bucks (5-2)- I can’t believe I’m doing this right now, but at 5-2 with wins against Denver and Detroit, the Bucks have looked pretty solid. Brandon Jennings is playing out of his mind right now (55 points last night against Golden State), and I’m looking forward to seeing more from the rookie.

12. Houston Rockets (6-4)- An impressive win in L.A. vs. the Lakers has Trevor Ariza smiling from ear to ear. Maybe this team really is better without T-Mac and Yao.

13. Sacramento Kings (4-4)- Not sure where this came from, but all of a sudden they lose their best player and go on a tear, winning 4 straight. Next up, Chicago.

14. Chicago Bulls (5-4)- They’ve played very inconsistent, but a road win in Cleveland puts them ahead of the rest of the “around .500″ pack.

15. Oklahoma City Thunder (5-5)- Also very inconsistent, I was ready to put them around the top 10 until last night. A home loss to the Clippers is never a good thing, especially when it follows a nice road win in San Antonio.

16. San Antonio Spurs (4-4)- A pretty confusing team with losses in Chicago, Utah, and Portland. The road seems to be a problem for these Spurs.

.

.

I can’t even begin to express how amazing it was to have Madre here and on how many levels. Above all, though, it was great to have a bit of home in London with me — it was still an adventure, but I got to have my favorite companion by my side.

In typical Sunday style, we headed to mass at Our Lady of Victories, but the London flare was definitely there: 11:30am Latin mass with a gorgeous choir (personal highlight: being able to kiss Madre during the sign of peace! It was great to not be a loner for once!)! We then headed up Kensington High Street to Kensington Church Street, where we stopped for brunch at the Kensington Wine Rooms (another establishment I frequently pass and always dreamed of going to!). Sufficiently fortified, we headed up to Notting Hill Gate and back onto The Big Bus for another sightseeing route through London! We hopped off at Westminster Bridge to spend some quality Kodak time with the London Eye and Big Ben, Madre’s new crush. Once we were chilled to the bone, we hopped on the Tube at Westminster station and got off at South Kensington. Yet another dining dream of mine came true when we stopped for a light dinner at Carluccio’s before heading home to the LVH for another sound snuggly sleepover.

Here it is: the Madre’s Visit series! Disclaimer: we took a ton of pictures, we ate a lot of food (I almost forgot how much I missed it), and we made a lot of magical memories. Here’s my attempt at documenting it all; a lot of the posts will be works-in-progress as I update them with little details I forgot/didn’t take the time to initially include–I know we have an eager audience awaiting! Enjoy I know we did!

After a very Love Actually airport reunion, Madre and I hit the Londontown running! First, we headed to the London Visitor’s Hotel in Kensington to drop off Madre’s luggage; the LVH is a quaint little bed & breakfast style hotel with an extremely welcoming staff, but the best part is its close location to my flat in South Kensington! From there, we walked through our ‘hood to my flat, stopping for a pub lunch at The Gloucester Arms and several Kodak moments — we soon realized that we were capturing Madre’s visit to London, my semester in London (flying solo makes getting pictures with yourself in them quite tricky), and our time together (again, only two makes it tricky, but we definitely capitalized on the kindness of strangers and waiters). Next on the agenda, taking a very wise arrival activity cue from Madre’s The Unofficial Guide to London (the same trusted series we get all of our Walt Disney World advice from), was to purchase two 48-hour tickets for The Big Bus Company’s hop-on, hop-off sightseeing bus tour of London. We caught one of the last buses and, thanks to the ridiculously early sunset at 4:30pm, Madre got to see all of the London sights for the first time in their twilight glory. We hopped off at Marble Arch, the end of the route, and grabbed a spot o’ tea (like the real Brits) before embarking on Madre’s first ride through London on a red double-decker bus (“yes, those really are the public buses!”). Then, the jet lag hit, so we made a quick change of route to South Kensington where we stopped for a delicious Italian meal at Il Falconiere (the first of many delicious, spot-hitting meals). I grabbed sleepover supplies for the next two nights; we were met outside, after already being freezing, by rain and a black cab…magic moment! We hopped in, headed ‘home’ to the LVH, and snuggled the night away–the one thing I missed about home most of all!
