Today saw the European release of the Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker Demo (dubbed Trial Ops) and I found myself with an hour on my hands, so I thought I’d give a little bit of a hands-on first impressions of it.

First of all, as someone who’s fresh off playing MGS1 on PSP, and someone who hasn’t played Portable Ops or MGS4 in a long time, the control system took a lot of adjusting to. Luckily the first 10-15 minutes are so give a full tutorial based on what control method you choose,, first going through the camera controls, then movement, then CQC, before finishing on weapon use. I’ve played through the tutorial on both settings and.. i don’t know, it just doesn’t seem right losing the camera controls to the 4 face buttons instead of a second analog stick. MGS1 was different, it came from a time when analog sticks were nearly non-existent so were forced to not have features that would hamper those that had controllers without them, but it just takes a good amount of time to get used to them. Which I haven’t done yet.

So now that my ability to actually play the game from the offset’s being severely hampered, let’s get down to the plot. What the basis of the game seems to be, is Naked Snake/Big Boss (remembering that this game carries on from 3 and Portable Ops) has started a private military company known as Militaires Sans Frontières (Soldiers without Borders, for those lacking in French). Another military faction has established base in Costa Rica sporting high-tech weaponry, and Snake and his wrecking crew are hired to oust them. That’s about all I got as far as, the first 2 missions which involves clearing out an enemy outpost at a dock, and sneaking towards a heavier fortified stronghold. I myself just got frustrated at the controls and left it at that. I don’t hate the game, it’s just that at this point in time, I don’t really want to open up and get familiar with the controls only to forget them in the Spring 2010 gaming blitz, then have to re-learn them in May when the full game comes out.

So on first play, I wasn’t really keen on it, it could have certainly been helped with a second analog stick (no shit Sherlock, it’s a shooter) but for what it’s worth, if you were a fan of Portable Ops it certainly shouldn’t disappoint.

[UPDATED] The demo is only 4 missions long, and culminates in a stand-off between Snake, a few heavily-armoured mercs, and a tank. Which I totally beat at 4AM this morning. I still think the controls are fiddly, but honestly? Stick with the Shooter-type controls unless Portable Ops was your favourite PSP game ever. They’re more akin to MGS4 with L being Aim and R being fire, left and right to change item and weapon, and down for crouch. It’s a bit more fiddly in Action Mode to move the camera with the D-Pad, especially in a game that relies on tension and not action. It may have worked for Monster Hunter but it just doesn’t click on Peace Walker for some reason.

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker: Demo Ops is now available worldwide on the PlayStation Store via both PS3 and PSP. It is 103MB in size and there is a save feature included in the demo, as well as ad-hoc and online play, although I’ve not tested either of those yet.

One of the most popular Indian TV Show ”BIG BOSS 3” is few days away from its end. I have followed all the three seasons of Big Boss but this season is the most entertaining and enjoyable to watch. As the season is approaching to its end, there is a reason for me to write my three favorite contestants of this season.

VINDU- It may not be wrong to say that he is the most entertaining contestant to watch on the show. He is truly unpredictable and you can never get the reason for its crying, which he normally does on every Friday in front of Amitabh Bachchan. Whenever someone will think of Big Boss 3, Vindu’s name will be at the top of everyone’s mind. I know some people really hate him for all the good reasons but c’mon guyz, Big Boss would be nothing without him.

ADITI- If there is any girl in this season who has never spoken ill of anyone, then she is the one. Her beautiful eyes just makes you to watch her as she talks. She always participates in every task with full energy and these reasons make her one of the strongest contestants to win this year’s season. What say? Lets bet on that?……..alright leave it.

PARVESH- And this season’s third favorite contestant is Parvesh. One of the very first reason is his way of explaining the things. But above all, he became interesting because of Claudia and why not? Who gets to watch real love stories on TV. After all, he is the only hunk in the house.

This is the time when everyone has his/her own favorites and as the season is going to end, everybody is just praying or voting  for his/her favorite contestant. Lets see, what will happen and who will win this season? Fingers crossed….

The original Metal Gear debuted in 1987 for the MSX2 computer in Japan and Europe. It was designed by Hideo Kojima, but was later developed by Konami. Today, there are many many games in the MGS series which deal with politics, warfare, environmentalism, censorship, genetic engineering, artificial intelligence, loyalty, reality, subjective vs. universal truths and other philosophical themes. During the course of the series there are more than just one protagonists, but who are all intertwined and recur in later games. The most meorable main character is probably Solid Snake, a top agent who belongs to the FOXHOUND group. Other protagonists include Big Boss (a.k.a. Naked Snake, whos also Solid Snake’s template for cloning) and Raiden, another FOXHOUND member.

Since I’ve never played any of the MGS games (although I’d really want to) I really can’t tell you much about the intertwined and complicated storyline, but I’ve named the basics in the preceeding paragraph so that should suffice. But now let’s get to the interesting part, the music. For parts 2,3 and 4 many soundtrack CDs were released. The music included in the games have a really high-tech and “tactical” theme to them, a possible comparison might be the soundtrack of the movie The Rock.

Konami ha anunciado hoy la fecha de lanzamiento en nuestro país de Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, la próxima entrega de la saga Metal Gear Solid de Hideo Kojima, que llegará a las tiendas españolas el próximo 27 de Mayo de 2010.

Diseñado especialmente para PSP, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker es el próximo capítulo en la historia del legendario experto en operaciones especiales, Snake (también conocido como Big Boss). Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker se desarrolla en 1974, al final de la guerra fría, y cuenta con una nueva historia escrita por el creador del juego, Hideo Kojima.

Two days ago, I got fired. Sort of.

I work at a small university. I was hired by a junior level professor (assistant professor) to work on a collaborative project. This project is in conjunction with a senior faculty member (full professor), who has a lot of pull in the department. Oftentimes I refer to these two as (my) Little Boss and Big Boss, respectively. Technically and officially, I have one supervisor: Little Boss. But in practice, I found myself answering to Big Boss far more than I answered to Little Boss.

Now Big Boss has expertise in the experimental system that we’re using to do the research. This expertise and background knowledge have been essential to us, for putting together our current research project. Moreover, I execute my research in the lab space of Big Boss, and use the (major) equipment that comes with the lab space. Material resources was a major part of Big Boss’ contribution to the collaboration.

The problems and questions I was hired to research come from Little Boss. Little Boss is a very broad thinker, and he has a knack for identifying and addressing major questions in our field. Little Boss has many collaborations, many of which involve study systems outside his specific area of expertise. This was one such collaboration.

I have experience with experimental design that would allow us to unite the ideas of Little Boss with the experimental system of Big Boss. I also have experience in conducting experiments in systems very similar to Big Boss but on questions very similar to Little Boss. I also have expertise in data collection and analysis. Mainly, however, I would be the “doer” of the research in the collaboration between Little Boss and Big Boss and myself.

The issue that led to me being fired stems from the fact that Big Boss and Little Boss do not study the same sorts of questions. To make a long story short, this discrepancy between Little Boss and Big Boss — about the types of questions to ask, and how to answer those questions — led to tension between members of the collaboration. Because of the difference in power between the members of the collaboration, and because I was the doer, that tension often manifested as me having to answer to Big Boss for the decisions and agendas of both me and Little Boss.  (Moreover, Big Boss appears to have had an agenda that included me studying *his* questions, even at the expense of the questions of Little Boss. I balked at this, and tensions between me and Big Boss heightened… But I digress.)

In a nutshell, I was hired to work for two bosses on a project. While we were making progress on the focal project, it was not enough progress from the perspective of Big Boss, because his measure of progress involved progress on other projects.

And so Big Boss quit us. What does this mean? This:

Two days ago, Big Boss “fired” me from his lab space. I am no longer to conduct work in his space. I am to clean up my bench and move materials to the lab of Little Boss. (Little Boss works in a completely different field, and so his lab is completely inappropriate for conducting our research.) This is tantamount to terminating the research, since, without the space and equipment of Big Boss, we cannot do the research.

Big Boss informed both Little Boss and myself that he was “done” with us and with the project, and that we could do now do whatever we wanted, but it would be without him (or his resources presumably). He asked that I would be “professionally” courteous to acknowledge his contributions to the project (=authorship?), and then left the meeting. (This meeting was epic, but that’s another story.)

So I was fired from the lab space — but not (yet?) fired by Little Boss. Although I was hired by Little Boss to work in the lab space.

It’s confusing, and I do not yet know how this will develop. But I fear that I am going to be drifting for awhile.

i had never been a fan of reality shows but had to watch some of them, thanks to my better half. one of such shows that has caught my attention of late is Big Boss, the third season and i cannot help but keep myself updated (even after the departure of Sherlyn and Samita). Of the inmates (as i’d like to call them) Rohit, the gay (allegedly) designer has drawn a lot of flak because of his bitching. on of the popular tabloids has tagged him under the column Bitchie Bitch. What we fail to understand is people like Rohit (i am not refering to his sexual orientation) are everywhere, all over the world. i had once prayed to the Almighty to let me see through people and he has granted me the wish. now my message to the world is to be careful what you wish for, for there is a God and your wish might be granted. i have now people around me who inundates me with fulsome praises and sugar-coated conversations and no sooner i turn around, can i hear them planning, plotting, conniving, jeering, mocking and conspiring. People who tell me i am brilliant at my work thinks i’ll shit in my pants if i were to work without their support. People who say they’d lay down their lives for me are apprehensive that i’ll write about their misdeeds (oh! did i tell u i am a journo?) the world has become a Big Boss Show for me but with a difference. i can neither leave the show, nor have the authority to punish these guys. People who swear to secrecy will be the first one to give out your secrets. if only God took these swears seriously, there would have been a severe decline in human population. i am surpised, shocked, appaled… my life boat in this shark-infested sea is my family… wife parents, my wife, my dog and above all, my angel of a daughter… my daughter in particular because she is about 14 months old and blabbers some incomprehensible words but when i hold her close to my heart, i can hear her speak, perfectly clear and with unfeigned emotions…

Chi rimarra’ in gara si contendera’ il premio finale di circa 20 mila euro, che verra’ assegnato non al ricco della coppia vincente, ma al povero, che potra’ cosi’ coronare un suo sogno. L’idea del reality, spiegano gli autori, e’ nata sulla scia del successo di “Il Milionario”, il film vincitore di otto premi Oscar, il cui protagonista principale e’ proprio un ragazzo delle baraccopoli di Mumbai, che diventa ricco proprio partecipando ad un gioco televisivo. Nel reality show i giovani ricchi si sono dovuti privare di tutte le loro comodita’: internet, telefonini, vestiti di lusso, letti, tv satellitari, servitu’, accontentandosi di vestiti semplici, letti di paglia. Inoltre, devono sbrigare le faccende domestiche e cucinare, cibandosi con alimenti semplici. Alcuni si sono mostrati incapaci con i lavori della casa, come spazzare per terra o lavare i piatti, altri non sono stati neppure in gradi di cucinare il chapati, il pane indiano di acqua e farina. Negli ultimi tre anni in India si registra un vero e proprio boom dei reality show: si va dal “Big Boss” (versione indiana de “Il Grande Fratello”) all’”India Idol” (versione locale di “American Idol”), a molti altri ancora che sono sempre seguitissimi dai telespettatori.

Both these Sena’s have lots of time. And hate. They also possess lots of petrol, stones, hockey sticks etc. They take me back in time to the Bollywood of the glorious 80’s. But let me not digress.

This MM is frailer than your old grandmother, grandmother, orphan, handicapped who is abandoned, on the road, doesn’t have work or relatives or social support – who begs on the streets, at numerous crossings, tapping on your air-conditioned, frost-bitten rolled-up windows of your XYZ sedan.

The MM can die of hurt caused by talk of all kinds – ‘I like India’ and bingo they lose a tooth…er you lose it.

If you say ‘I love India’ then entire gene structures of the MM mutate. They vibrate at higher speeds than the 2 particles traveling in the ever – crashing Large Hadron Collider.

‘I like Mughlai’ say you? That could possibly be the last words out of your treacherous mouth.

‘I like a Nude’ and and…forget about it.

MM in fact has come as a savior to the entire women species of India. No longer are women considered the weaker of the species. MM has been categorized as the weakest of the lot. And it is reliably learnt that the SS and the MNS are proud wearers of his badge of honour. They in fact want this exalted status to be made permanent so that benefits can accrue to their scared lot.

Meanwhile Indian women groups are busy putting aside their differences and sending a delegation to Bombay to congratulate both the SS and the MNS for giving the final shove in the centuries old struggle.

They are however only worried about 1 thing – giving up the reserved seats on BEST buses to the Marathi Manoos.

MM can’t compete with the illiterate Bhaiyya coming from UP and Bihar. MM cannot get jobs also when competing with some of the literates coming out of the said backward provinces.

In additional news, which is already being confirmed as unadulterated speculation or rumor, the Big Boss evictee motor-mouth KRK has launched his next film called ‘Marathi Manhoos’ to whip up frenzy, polarize his audience and earn money right on the table. He says he has learnt the art of polarizing from the SS and MNS.

Hello all. Nice to see you all here. Having seen a lot in the last two years, I’ve got a lot of stuff to share.  Many have left their lasting impression on this house.  From oldies like Mr. Baban Bewade, Chacha Chamtkari to newbies like Rani Laxmibai and Kalamwaali Bai. From the eternal Baba Bhya Swamy to temporaries like Desibaba, Asatyanarayan and Bang Badhus… From George Bush (Mr. Ex-) to no-nonsense Mr. Armstrong…  I’ve seen them all… And now thanks to the Big sister, I’ve also got the wall to write on. Smarties must have guessed who I am by now. For others, I am the Big Boss. Aur Big Boss (or BB as I call myself ) ke ghar me aapka swagat hai.

Kal ki hi baat hai…  What started as a friendly discussion over what to cook, turned into a battle of sandwich. Big sister had just returned from the office, tired as usual, after a looooooong drive on 495 and looooooong day of google chatting. And our Blue-eyed Mr. Armstrong was in the kitchen contemplating about the dinner plans. Big sister wanted sandwich and Mr. Armstrong was not ready to make one without the coriander. And that spark was enough. Then what happened for the next few minutes would have made Mr. Nixon and Mr. Brezhnev proud in the heaven. It had all the elements of the cold war – taunts, stares, murmurs and Rani Laxmibai. (I’m not sure if she was in the original one but who cares about the history guys…)  Baba Bhya Swamy was in his famous Bhya state not caring about what’s happening around him. Finally Rani had to put her foot down to break the Berlin wall.

While all this was happening, another story was in the waiting. Khan Saab returned shortly after and was made to taste his own medicine. Armstrong and Bhya Swamy (who had come out of the dormancy) bombarded Khan Saab with some awkward questions. I sometimes envy Khan Saab. He manages to become all Bhola-Bhala in public and eat all the mava. He’s gonna have a ball (J) with Ms. Besharma with Atlanta this weekend. Those bloody grades he gave as a TA are paying off.

The dinner was quiet for a change. Armstrong and Rani Laxmibai looked a bit tensed. The best is around the corner for them I am sure. The only person missing was Kalamwali Bai. She’s gonna be back tomorrow with some stories exclusively for girls (and BB of course… Girl chat is the biggest source of rumors and entertainment for sure). These people are going out next weekend and the lazy bums haven’t even started planning. Its time they all get geared up. Hope they have a great vacation. Fir main aur meri Tanhayee… I am so gonna miss them..

A Kojima Productions que atualmente trabalha em Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker para o PSP, anunciou que irá liberar um demo do jogo em inglês, já que nem todo mundo entende japonês. Ainda não há data prevista para seu lançamento.

Este novo jogo da série promete inovar, já que irá permitir jogar cooperativo com mais de um PSP, o que provou ser bastante interessante em um vídeo lançado pela empresa, e que pode ser conferido pelo menos um pouco no demo em japonês liberado durante a Tokyo Game Show deste ano. O demo em inglês contará novamente com a voz de David Hayter, o dublador de Snake também nos outros jogos.

A história acontece 10 anos após os acontecimentos de Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater do PlayStation 2. Neste jogo você assumirá novamente o papel de Big Boss, que agora perambula pela Costa Rica para tentar desvendar uma conspiração.

Finally actress Shilpa Shetty is engaged to her long time beau Raj Kundra. The event was a family affair but her sister Shamita Shetty could not attend it. She doesn’t even know but another good mahurat was a long way off and considering Raj’s parents and relatives were down from London for a week, it seemed convenient.”

After so many obstacles on the way, finally bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty and her businessman beau Raj Kundra are engaged. The event took place at Raj’s apartment on 24th evening.

“I seek everyone’s blessings. Thank you very much,” said Shilpa Shetty. On the auspicious occasion she wore designer attire created by Manish Malhotra.

As far as the ceremony is concerned only family members and close friends were invited. However her sister Shamita Shetty could not make it to the engagement ceremony as she was participating in the ‘Big Boss’.

The industry was panic whether Shilpa would leave Bollywood after marriage, to this Raj cleared by stating that he is planning to shift base to Mumbai from London for her lady love.

The actress whose love life was going nowhere for the longest time has finally decided to throw caution to the wind and marry Raj Kundra, who I must say, is a very good catch. He has decided to move to Mumbai from London.

Her sister Shamita Shetty didn’t find the event exciting enough to attend. Well, actually she’s cooped up in the Big Boss house. Unless someone attacks her racially, she will not be rising to the heights her sister reached.

No, I am not referring to the gun locket that hangs around his neck. I am really pissed off by this guy who comes with loads of attitude. Wonder where he got that kind of arrogance and the delusions of being a star.

Anyone watching Big Boss 3 will recognise this stubborn cranky man as the main attraction/distraction of the reality show. He is foul-mouthed and short-tempered and his tall claims would leave the biggest of braggers to shame. He claims that his drinking water comes from France and milk from Holland, what hogwash! He claims to be a multi-millionaire but his comfort level in the confines of Big Boss jail was admirable. He felt so much at home in the jail, he just rolled on the raised platform like a dog rolls on the ground.

But what I found most disconcerting was the fact that he was bullshitting in front of BigB, one of the most humble men on Earth. He felt no regret about his outburst on Rohit Verma and his brutal attack on fellow inmate, he definitely needs some therapy. He also had a war of words with Raju Shrivastav, a guy who usually is cool and composed, but noth this time. Raju gave it back to KRK which he could not handle. Even on previous occasions he misbehaved with other inmates like Claudia and Tanaz.

What was worse was that, he was justifying himself in the eviction episode. He was showing as if he made a sacrifice for Sherlyn Chopra. He was the most-hated character in the house, he did not perform any task and he had a bad attitude. No wonder all housemates voted him out last week. But the rising TRPs lured the producers in duping the voting public and retained him for another week, hoping that he would reform. Yeah! jerks like these never change. The truth is that, he came to Big Boss home only to create ruckus and generate some publicity for himself. He was successful initially, in grabbing eyeballs. But later we all realised that he is not just putting up an act, he is truly full of shit. I even doubt he has a fan base that he keeps bragging about. Anyways, good riddance to bad rubbish.

Much to BigB’s credit, he played the tolerant and forgiving father so well. Long live BigB and goto hell KRK!

रियलिटी शो “बिग बॉस-3″ में कमाल खान के निकाले जाने के बाद अब बॉलीवुड के सुपरस्टार काका उर्फ राजेश खन्ना की एंट्री होने वाली हैं।
शो के आरंभ में ही उन्हें भाग लेने के लिए आमंत्रित किया गया था लेकिन उन्होंने घर में शराब पीने की अनुमति मांगी थी जो नहीं मिली। कमाल खान के बुरे रवैये से परेशान चैनल वालों को अब साफ छवि का प्रतिभागी चाहिए। तो सुनने में आ रहा हैं कि राजेश खन्ना शो में प्रवेश लेने के लिए शराब छोडने तक के लिए तैयार हो गए हैं।
वहीं उनके दामाद व अभिनेता अक्षय कुमार बिल्कुल नहीं चाहते कि वे शो में भाग लें। लेकिन उनका शो में भाग लेने का इतना मन है कि वह इसमें वाइल्ड कार्ड एंट्री ले रहे हैं।

 Interview with Zulfi Syed, after he was evicted from Big Boss last season.

Is Zulfi Syed the real Big Boss? He has alleged that as per the number of votes received he stood first, Raja Chaudhury second while winner Ashutosh Kaushik got the least number of votes, and Rahul Mahajan saw that Ashutosh won as per his promise to him.

“This portion was not aired on TV. Before leaving the house, Rahul had said to Ashutosh before all of us that he would spend money and ensure that Ashutosh wins the show. He also said that he would take care of the telecom companies and the votes,” said Zulfi.

With this Zulfi said that he was sure that Ashutosh would win. “When I came out of the house Shilpa Shetty asked me who I thought had won and I said Ashu. After receiving the award too Ashu said that the award belonged to Rahul Bhaiyaa. It was an open admission,” he said.

Zulfi also said that he had learnt that he had got the maximum votes through the people in the industry and the media persons whom he met. “They all said that for them I was the winner and they told me about the votes. I am happy that Ashu got the money since he comes from a humble background and from a small town. I maintain my dignity and am not after the money. The way it happened is unfair to both Raja and me since we too have spent three months in the house,” he said.

On Rahul Mahajan volunteering to leave the House and not apologizing after the inmates jumped out of the house, Zulfi said that he wanted to make it look as if he had done a sacrifice for the other inmates. “He wanted to show that he has done a charity to us by opting to leave the show. He had come to cleanse his image. He opting to leave the House helped him achieve that. Even in the house he kept playing with the word, ‘charity.’ He also got the award, “Bada Dilwala,” he said.

Zulfi refused to comment on the Rahul-Payal-Monica love triangle saying that it was their personal affair. He refuted rumours that he had an affair with Sambhavna Seth.

He called Diana Hayden commanding. “She was very commanding and did things like hiding food. This was unexpected of a person of her stature, someone who has been the Miss World. I never nominated her for eviction though,” he said.

He was fond of Debojit and Ehsaan Qureshi in the house. “Debojit is a straight guy and I liked him the most. Besides, I was friendly with Ehsaanji. With the rest I knew how much distance to keep so as to maintain my dignity. There is no point in getting into arguments and fights and drooping yourself. Silence was my weapon,” he said.

Zulfi however calls the time spent in the house a life time experience. “There were 14 different kinds of people put together. I saw what all people could do just for money,” he said.

As of now, he has got back to work and he was going through some movie scripts. “I am going to Goa, since my film Taj Mahal is being screened at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI). I will come home to Bangalore next month.”
