This is actually cringe worthy. Maybe because her album isnt that bad and i used to intern at her label. I feel really bad for her, i heard shes now dropped from her label and career is on the ‘down-slope’

I just saw that Mercury Music Prize winner Speech Debelle has quit her label Big Dada (a subsidiary of Ninja Tune) due to them not having her prize winning album in shops since being awarded the prize.
“The Mercury Prize was on Tuesday, and on Friday there were no more physical albums in the shops,” she said.
“So, on the Mercury weekend, which would have been my biggest selling weekend, people couldn’t get it,”

A point of the Mercury Music Prize is to create a buzz, highlighting some of the records that generally get missed by the ‘mainstream’ media and general public, and to get the public into the shops with this increased profile that the awards generate.    It’s the record companies that submit albums to the Mercury Music Prize for consideration, so you think that Big Ninja Dada Tune would have a plan ready should their artist win?  Why bother with submitting the album if they weren’t gonna have a few records ready following the announcement of the award.  They should have the hotline to  the pressing plant as soon as they heard “…and the winner is Speech…”

In these days of record companies bitching about lack of sales, blah, blah, blah, you’d think they would take advantage of such a wonderful opportunity to recoup their costs, after all the work that’s been put into the recording.  Certainly wasn’t any promotion being done.

It pains me  to say it, ‘cos I do like Ninja Big Tune Dada and quite a bit of the stuff they release, but they are a bit sloppy when dealing with people that want to get hold of their product.  A month ago, I bought a Daedelus mp3 via their online Ninja shop. After they copped my money, I was expecting a link to download the track, like when you buy from Boomkat, Beatport etc. The link never appeared so I wrote to Ninja immediately to ask ‘what was up?, surely your not sending the mp3 in the post?’

They didn’t reply, not to the first, second, third, fourth or fifth emails.  (Hey Speech, maybe there is nobody at the office.)
It was only after I wrote to Daedelus direct, that I was able to get what I paid for, as he responded practically immediately.

Speech, good luck in your future endeavours, Daedelus, your a star, Big Ninja Tuna Dada..ahem,  you kinda losing it, and hence your artists, which are your life.

Update:  NInja have now sent me my paid-for goods.

Speech Debelle is quitting her record label, saying the company were to blame for disappointing sales of her Mercury-winning debut album.

Debelle told 6 Music that sales of Speech Therapy suffered because of poor distribution by Big Dada records.

Prior to her win, the album had sold around 3,000 copies with sales increasing to just below 10,000.

“The Mercury Prize was on Tuesday, and on Friday there were no more physical albums in the shops,” she said.

“So, on the Mercury weekend, which would have been my biggest selling weekend, people couldn’t get it,” added Debelle, whose real name is Corynne Elliot.

“I wasn’t disappointed that it didn’t sell well, I was disappointed in the people I was working with.” Continue Reading…..

After the Mercury win it just seemed to go quiet *crickets* for Speech Debelle.

It will be interesting to see what happens now…….  

Mit ihrem Debüt-Album „Speech Therapy“ rettet uns Speech Debelle den Herbst – und zeigt nebenbei dem Hip Hop neue Wege auf.

Mann hat seine Probleme mit ruhiger Musik. Mag sie auch noch so sehr die eigene Stimmung treffen – wenn wir die Platte jemand anderen als unserer Freundin empfehlen oder gar schenken, endet es meistens damit, dass Mann sich rausredet. Mann spricht dann davon, wie gut die Platte produziert ist, wie toll die Frau singt und überhaupt, Mann erfindet Ausreden anstatt einfach zuzugeben, dass auch er den Gefühlen im tristen Nebelwetter nicht immer widerstehen kann.

Was Speech Debelle vor einigen Wochen in England auf dem Markt gebracht hat und in Deutschland (zum Glück) noch recht stiefmütterlich behandelt wird, rechtfertigt das Eintreten für die großen Gefühle: Ruhige Musik mit Streichern mit Frauengesang, voll Pathos. Perfekt arrangiert und doch authentisch und erdig. Und: Es ist Hip Hop.

Der Prototyp der männlichen Kampfsau, die alles, was nicht bei Drei auf den Bäumen oder hinter den Boxen ist, flachlegt bzw. gegen die Wand spielt, Keith Richards von den Rolling Stones, sagt über Musik: „Meine Leinwand ist die Stille. Wenn du diese Stille zu sehr ausfüllst, fangen die Probleme an, und am Ende steht nur noch alles dumm im Weg herum.“

Richards war in den 1960ern mitverantwortlich für die Revolution nach außen, dass auf die Straße gehen bei „Street Fighting Man“, die Verruchtheit der Drogen bei „Sympathy for the Devil“ oder die Hymne an die Zerstörung „Gimmie Shelter“ – dutzendfach eingesetzt durch Regisseure wie Martin Scorsese bei Filmexzessen.

Speech Debelle, bürgerlich Corynne Elliot, nimmt sich die Leinwand des Keith Richards und zerstört sie. Sie greift auf die gleichen Zutaten wie der Stones-Mann zurück, vermixt Folk und Blues, greift auf die klassische Liveband aus Gitarre, Bass und Schlagzeug zurück und versetzt sie ins Hier und Jetzt. Was sie aus der Stille der Musikgeschichte schafft verdient es, gehört zu werden.

2009 im Juni bringt Elliot ein Album heraus, was nicht ohne Zufall erst jetzt im Herbst die Menschen erreicht. Die 26jährige, gerade als Sensationsgewinnerin des renommierten Barclay Mercury Prize bestätigt, macht den aufgeblasenen Hip Hop, der seine Proletenlektion von Richards gründlich gelernt hat, zu einer Therapiestunde der privatesten Probleme.

Aufgewachsen in South East London bringt die Rapperin so ziemlich alles mit, was einen kredibil macht, um ein HipHop-Star zu sein: Eine verpfuschte Kindheit, ein Vater, den sie nie richtig kennen gelernt hat, mit 19 Jahren dann der Auszug aus dem Haus der Mutter, vier Jahre auf der Straße angefüllt mit Drogen, Gewalt, Verzweiflung.

Doch der Bruch in der steilen Gangster-Rapper- Karriere a la Missy Elliot und Konsorten wird gebrochen, als Debelle mit 23 Jahren zu ihrer Mutter zurückkehrt. Ihre Musik, und dass ist Debelle extrem wichtig, liest sich wie eine Biographie der dunklen und der hellen Seiten dieser Zeit. Was verhindert, dass wir so ein typisches „Ich-erkenne-mich-selbst-und-muss-es-der-Welt-unbedingt-mitteilen“- Ding haben, ist, dass Debelle ehrliche Texte mit exzellenter Musik verkleidet. Die Leinwand der Stille wird gefüllt durch eine hervorragende akustische Gitarre, treibende Hip Hop-Beats, die live eingespielt sind und ab und zu eine zusätzliche sparsame Instrumentierung.

Ihr Alter ist dabei Debelles größte Stärke: Hier rappt eine Frau über Eifersucht auf Facebook, die Xbox des Exfreunds, die Hektik der Großstadt und über die Suche nach der eigenen Identität. Als Hörer packt einen der Beat und man gleitet in das Innere der Sängerin, verfolgt ihre Lebensgeschichte zwischen Verzweiflung, Wut, Aggression und Liebe, ohne das die Texte in die Peinlichkeit abgleiten.

Für den im Hip Hop so wichtigen Respekt sorgt dabei die Zusammenarbeit mit Großmeister Roots Manuva. So verneigt sich die Gegenwart des Hip Hop schon einmal vorsorglich vor einer Frau, die durchaus dafür sorgen könnte, dem inzwischen leicht angestaubten Mainstream- Hip Hop neue Lebensgeister zu verpassen.

„Speech Therapy“ beginnt ruhig: Lose finden die Instrumente und die Stimme im ersten Track „Searching“ zusammen und formen eine Einheit. Ein jazziges Schlagzeug untermalt die sphärische Akkustik-Gitarre, während der Gesang von fragmentarischen Raps ausgehend sich eingroovt und zum charakteristischen HipHop-Sprechgesang übergeht.

Beim vierten Lied „Spinnin“ findet die Platte endgültig ihre Form, zwischen jazziger, groovender Instrumentierung gibt die Stimme den Druck vor, mit unglaublicher Intensität zwischen Zorn und Traurigkeit, pubertärem Trotz und intelligenten Beobachtungen. Es folgen autobiographische Stücke über verflossene Beziehungen, den Vater – und schließlich „Wheels in Motion“. Kaum ein HipHop-Stück, dass über Streicher und Klavier so erdig, so gerade daherkommt und einen mitnimmt, über die Gesangslinie auffängt und fort trägt.

Ab „Wheels in Motion“ festigt sich die Platte, jedes Lied ist eine Steigerung hin zu „Finish this Album“, dem vielleicht großartigsten Hip Hop-Lied dieses Jahres. Wieder trägt nur die Stimme das Lied, während die Musik zwischen Klassik, Jazz und HipHop schwebt. Musik, wie ein sanfter Weckruf am Morgen, ein Tag alleine am Strand, um Schönheit aber auch die Abgründe der Welt wahrzunehmen.

Die größte Gefahr, die bei dem Debütalbum „Speech Therapy“ immer mitschwingt, ist gleichzeitig auch die Stärke des Albums. Es ist zwar zornig, es ist Hip Hop, es ist aber auch ruhig und kommt somit im Mainstream an. Dadurch bleibt offen, was man Speech Debelle wünschen soll, denn der ersehnte Chart-Erfolg bringt zwangsläufig eine Heavy Rotation in Schlecker-Filialen, Karstadt- Aufzügen und Restaurant- Toiletten mit sich.

Die Platte eignet sich sowohl dazu, alleine durch den Hamburger Hafen zu laufen als auch dazu zu feiern – und leider auch, um im Balzac einen Coffee-to-go zu bestellen. Und wenn Mann mit seiner Vorliebe für ruhige Musik permanent in der Öffentlichkeit konfrontiert wird, bleibt es eine kurze Affäre – ein Schicksal, dass diese Platte nicht verdient hat. Bit late I know, but I had to blog about it. Good look for BBK – a good example of genre-disregarding music. Unsure of the vocoder, but the blended verse at the end is a really good idea, and Jammer is hilarious! When Donatella asks Skepta ‘Where can you see this being played?’ during this Grime Daily interview, and he stumbles for an answer, I couldn’t help but laugh.

I feel Grime fans pay too much attention to these sort of things. Instead of listening to a piece of music and making a judgement based on the emotional response the piece does, or doesn’t provoke, many base it on marketplace, situation, BPM, image or genre. This has to stop.

Shank bars and productions with no commercial appeal does not equal integrity. Shank bars are so widespread they should be viewed as spuriously as 8-bar loverman chats. Just because they don’t make any money doesn’t make them any more authentic or expressive.

I welcome this new direction for BBK. Vibes. Vibes. Vibes. And I know for sure, that there are more tracks like this on their way.

Kolejną gwiazdą katowickiego festiwalu Tauron Nowa Muzyka będzie nie kto inny jak jeden z najciekawszych głosów współczesnego hip-hopu, Roots Manuva. Reprezentant Big Dada, oficyny Ninja Tune specjalizującej się właśnie w takich brzmieniach będzie promować swój ostatni krążek “Slime & Reason”. Drugą ogłoszoną gwiazdą jest również nagrywający dla Ninja Tune King Cannibal, współtwórca programu Solid Steel. Przypominamy, festiwal odbędzie już za miesiąc w dniach 28-30 sierpnia.

The Mercury Music Prize was first established in 1992 and was created as an alternative to the industry dominated Brit awards. Due to this nominees are normally recognized by sheer talent than chart-topping success. So in Lehmans terms exit Lady Gaga enter………………Speech Debelle.

Speech Debelle has just been nominated for a Mercury, which follows artists such as Roots Manuva, Dizzee Rascal, Ty and M.I.A. Not a bad list to be on if I say so myself. Now I’m going to be totally honest, I missed the boat on this artist completely. I gave her a quick  listen in late 08 and just pressed fast forward as I felt she was missing some sort of edge.  On a second listen (earlier this afternoon) I have realised that the hard-rage infused spitting I was looking for has been replaced with warm, insightful rhymes that, in fact, is very pleasing on the ear.

Jedna z wyżej cenionych artystek związanych z brytyjską wytwórnią Ninja Tune – Speech Debelle - została wyróżniona nominacją do nagrody Barclaycard Mercury Prize.  Tę prestiżową angielską nagrodę otrzymują muzycy pochodzący z Wielkiej Brytanii i Irlandii, których najnowsze albumy zyskały w danym roku szczególne uznanie. Wyniki konkursu ogłaszane są pod koniec lipca i nie ma tu żadnych obostrzeń gatunkowych. W tym roku o nagrodę będzie walczyć m.in.  Speech Debelle, której muzykę umiejscawia się w kręgach hip-hopu i trip-hopu, dlatego też jej promocją zajmuje się młodszy braciszek Ninja Tune – wytwórnia Big Dada. Wokalistka została nominowana do nagrody za album “Speech Therapy”.Speech Debelle wystąpi niedługo w Polsce, więc ciekawscy (i zainteresowani i miłujący artystkę) będą mogli się wsłuchać w jej głos na żywo. Koncert odbędzie się podczas Festiwalu Tauron Nowa Muzyka (28 – 340 sierpnia, Katowice) – Speech wystąpi tam 28 sierpnia.

Z najnowszym albumem Speech Debelle zapoznacie się na stronie Ninja Tune – w tym miejscu, a także na oficjalnym Myspace artystki.

W tym roku wśród nominowanych znalazła się także Bat For Lashes z albumem “Two Suns” (artystka była nominowana także w roku 2007 za “Fur and Gold”), a w latach ubiegłych do elitarnego grona zaliczono między innymi: Radiohead, Thom York, Adele, Burial, Dizzee Rascal, New Young Pony Club czy Lou Rhodes.

Outrap c’est quoi?

C’est une sélection de disques de rap, mais pas de n’importe quel rap…de rap de travers, de rap qui dégouline , de rap qui réfléchit et qui en veut plus! . . . .

Une petite sélection qui brasse large, le plus large possible mais sans être exhaustive, parce que c’est ma sélection, pas que je connaisse chaque disque par cœur, désolé….  elle a surtout été faite au feeling, avec une envie de secouer/découvrir ce rayon et ses multiples facettes mais aussi avec l’aide d’internet, inépuisable source d’informations et d’opinions… . .

Ce qui m’a aidé à sélectionner ces disques, ce sont des labels, des producteurs et des mc’s qui prennent des risques et qui défient l’ordre établi.

Par leurs flows de fumeurs de crack ou de speedés à la caféine, par leurs productions basées sur des samples de ritournelles jazzy, de musique du monde ou d’extraits de films, les premiers acteurs sont les mc’s et les producteurs. Ceux-ci font avancer, parfois de travers, une culture qui ne se résume heureusement pas à Eminem, 50 cent ou Kanye West…

Certains labels indépendants œuvrent eux aussi à la remise en question et donc au développement des musiques qu’ils produisent…

En gros, des mc’s, des producteurs et des labels qui se donnent carte blanche, qui  veulent prendre du plaisir en nous en donnant et c’est ça que j’ai eu envie de mettre en avant avec cette sélection…

Fluorescent Black – the mysterious recording that’s been spoken about ever since the first whispers of an Anti Pop Consortium reformation.

Let me rewind a touch.  Anti Pop Consortium are an IMPORTANT group.  All caps.  No doubt.  Two Warp records releases under their collective belt, a break from the group (at the height of their notoriety) and numerous releases and side projects later, they are back, this time with the mighty Big Dada.  Tonight’s show at Cargo is spellbinding.  The sheer energy being exchanged between APC & the crowd is phenomenal.  The mix is good… vocals well audible, beats crisp, synths stabs alternately warm analogue and cold digi.  Pure bliss.  ”We’ll never fake moves” exclaimed Earl Blaise as they teased the crowd with the only piece of retrospective work performed that night… beginning as Ghostlawns the way we all know it, but not even a bar in, everything but vocals dropped out.  Acapella.  So yeah – that’s Ghostlawns acapella.  Kick yourself if you weren’t there.

All the new material sounds totally amazing – both the skewed  instrumentals and blistering vocal tracks.  Awaiting Autumn and the APC’s new dawn.  They had better be coming back to London!  Volcano.

A piece on London hip-hopper Speech Debelle I wrote for Dazed 3 or 4 months ago. It got published just as I left for South America, and appears in Issue 171 (March 2009).
