This is especially important to me as my son is one of the contestants and could sure use your vote. As a matter of fact you can vote as many times as you like,just take a few minutes and keep on punching the re-vote button. Its that easy. Look and listen for Louie Bello and see for yourself how talented he is. Thanks so much. Just go to Community Auditions and press vote. Big Lou PS go to( louiebello.com) or( bellomusic.com )

So this week I was on call for work which means I can be called any time of the day & night to travel to some data center in the LA area to address any server issues. This week my group took over support for some new sites for our customer. It was a crazy week. In addition to my regular 40 + hours I put in an additional 42 hours of OT responding to server down calls! I am beat but I still managed to stop the Culver City car show on Saturday for about an hour before I went home to try and catch some much needed sleep.

The first person I saw when I walked into the show was my good friend Big Lou Tanahara. He was at the show to promote and sell his line of diecast called “The Custom Crew”. The first piece from the company is called “The Sledster”. Check the blog roll on the right for more info and the online store.

Here’s a few more shot from around the show. There was something for everyone’s taste. I have a few more on my Flickr page. Link on the right.

Illustrations by:  Iain McIntosh

Paperback:  357 pages

Publisher: Anchor Books (div. of Random House)

Publish Date:  2007

ISBN:  9780307275981

Miscellaneous: This is the third book in McCall Smith’s 44 Scotland Street series.

There was no electricity in the village, of course, and when night descended – suddenly, as it does in the tropics – Domenica found herself fumbling with a small Tilley lamp which the house servant had set out on the kitchen table. It was a long time since she had used such a lamp, but the knack of adjusting it came back to her quickly – an old skill, deeply-ingrained, like riding a bicycle or doing an eightsome reel, the skills of childhood which never left one. As she pumped up the pressure and applied a match to the mantle, Domenica found herself wondering what scraps of the old knowledge would be known to the modern child. Would that curious little boy downstairs, Bertie, know how to operate an old-fashioned dial telephone? Or how to make a fire? Probably not. And there were people, and not just children, who did not know how to add or do long division, because they relied on calculators; all those people in shops who needed the till to tell them how much change to give because nobody had ever taught them how to do calculations like that in school. There were so many things that were just not being taught any more. Poetry, for example. Children were no longer made to learn poetry by heart. And so the deep rhythms of the language, its inner music, was lost to them, because they had never had it embedded in their minds. And geography had been abandoned too – the basic knowledge of how the world looked, simply never instilled; all in the name of educational theory and of the goal of teaching children how to think. But what, she wondered, was the point of teaching them how to think if they had nothing to think about? We were held together by our common culture, by our shared experience of literature and the arts, by scraps of song that we all knew, by bits of history half-remembered and half-understood but still making up what it was that we thought we were. If that was taken away, we were diminished, cut off from one another because we had nothing to share.

-Love Over Scotland by Alexander McCall Smith, pages 174-175

Love Over Scotland by Alexander McCall Smith was both the first book out of the 44 Scotland Street series that I’ve read, as well as my first experience reading Alexander McCall Smith. It will not be the last on either account.

At first, though, I was uncertain if I would like it. McCall Smith has a quiet writer’s voice. Whereas other authors may have said Irene was a self-absorbed, narcissistic mother who lived her life vicariously through her six-year-old son Bertie, McCall Smith does this by simply having Irene constantly saying, “Melanie Klein says” this or that, as if to let the other person know they are a stupid twit and should stop talking (including her own husband, Bertie’s father). Irene is an absolute helicopter mom, and McCall reveals this about her through Bertie, who thinks, “nobody [is] always there, except perhaps [my] mother.” McCall Smith’s writing is subtle, and instead of compelling the reader forward, he floats you along on the currents of the story.

While being a 3rd book of a series, Love Over Scotland is perfectly capable of being a stand alone novel. It may have helped in the beginning had I had the background, however the characters show themselves and develop quite well on their own in this book.

Quick Summary of Love Over Scotland: 44 Scotland Street is the address of the apartment building in which most of the characters live, with the exception of Angus, Matthew, Pat (who lived there in the previous novels but has moved), and Big Lou, who owns the coffee shop they all frequent.

Irene, Stuart and Bertie are a young family in one flat, and the “Bertie Project” is Irene’s attempt at making Bertie into a super-genius and prodigy. She pushes and bullies people, only listens to Dr. Fairbairn (Bertie’s therapist) because he’s the only one who is as intelligent and informed as she, and even goes so far as to manipulate the Edinburgh Teenage Orchestra into admitting her six-year-old son, much to Bertie’s lament and opposition.

Pat and Matthew are co-workers and Matthew has a thing for Pat, who sees him as being a “nice guy,” which means boring. Pat, on the other hand, meets a man who calls himself “Wolf” and is smitten (or bitten?). But honestly, is it possible for a guy named Wolf and who uses “Hey there, Little Red Riding Hood” for his pick-up line to be any good?

Domenica is an anthropologist who has gone to study pirates in Malaysia. When she arrives at her bungalow in the village, she is told the young man on the porch is there to serve her in every way. While Domenica is having her tropical adventures, her friend Antonia, who is writing a historical fiction about sixth century Scottish saints behaving badly, is subletting her 44 Scotland Street flat, and isn’t getting along very Angus. Cyril, Angus’s dog is dog-napped while tied up outside an Italian market and has to make his “Incredible Journey” back to his man.

And Big Lou’s heart is in the right place when she loans her fiance Eddie a big chunk of cash (£34,000) to open his own restaurant AND made him co-owner of her coffee bar. When Eddie begins telling her of his new waitresses, ages 16 and 18, and his aspirations to open a gentleman’s club (complete with pole dancing) instead of the restaurant, Big Lou remembers his past legal troubles in the US with underage girls.

The book is altogether fun, with a message of loving and accepting each other and that you can greatly increase the happiness in the world by giving someone a gift. The book is written from an omniscent third person POV, but not exactly the omnipresent. You kind of flit from mind to mind, listening to the thoughts of each participant briefly, including peeks into Cyril the dog’s thought processes.

My favorite characters were definitely Bertie, Angus and Cyril, and Matthew, and I was rather fond of Big Lou, too. I have mooched 44 Scotland Street from PBS and added Espresso Tales (the second book of the series) to my wishlists. ALSO, there is a fourth book in the series, The World According to Bertie, that came out last year, and I’ve added it to my WLs, as well. I’m going to have to give The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency books a go, too. *sigh* So many books, so little time!

For it’s fun, light hearted and warm storyline and characters, I give Love Over Scotland by Alexander McCall Smith 5 out of 5 stars.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The following video clip is of a street performance in Edinburgh.  I thought it encompassed Bertie’s love of music, Wolf’s smexiness, and the city the book takes place in, not to mention the desire being felt by several characters and the exotic setting of Domenica’s pirates….  and okay, I admit it… the lead drummer is hawt!
“Car art” can be a real tough sell.
I’m not talking about paintings or pictures of cars. I’m sure there’s a good market for that.
I’m talking about the lines and functions of a vehicle. It would be fascinating to find out the very first, gutteral reaction that the majority of people have to the word “car”. You could almost separate the reactions into personality types, I’m sure.
How many people would think:  “4 wheels and a motor ” and just leave it at that?
How many would respond with: “5.970 seconds @ 246.08 mph” ?
Or how about: “room for 6 with 2 car seats and a good safety rating” .
I’m betting there are very few whose initial response would relate to the car as a rolling canvas …and I bet that the majority of those who do see the car as a canvas, see it as a canvas for paint and graphic design.
Now, I love to paint and I love to come up with cool graphics but my curiosity lies in the shaping and transforming of bodies. I suppose if I was into the fine arts scene I would probably be a sculptor. (I wonder….if I was into the human form, would I sculpt people with 3 heads and no feet??? What does that even mean?)
When I see a car, I see shapes that either work or don’t work together. When I build a custom die cast piece, I’m going after shapes and lines that come together to form something that strikes the eye and makes you stop and think, “what the heck” …..and hopefully not in a bad way. Having said that, I think I have very few designs that could be mass marketed to a die cast-purchasing public. Hmmmm.
Maybe “Cadzooks” …..and maybe “Big Slick” …..I don’t know.
I’m beginning to have a new respect for guys like Luis Tanahara and Dave Chang. They’ve created a fantasy vehicle, (or at least they’ve transformed facets of real vehicles into something new and fantastic) and they’ve managed to market those creations in limited numbers to die hard fans of die cast. Of course the whole concept of the “chase” or “limited edition” version has swayed those simply looking for some kind of future monetary gain.
One of my questions is: when does marketing become more important than design?
Another: is the ‘Perfect Design’ one that appeals to the greatest number of people?
I want to look at the evolution of the “Evo” by Dave Chang.
It starts with the most popular and most coveted design ever released by Hot Wheels: the Drag Bus. So you have a 1:64 casting that is heavy in the hand, is larger than most castings, has a huge canvas for cool graphic artwork, and is related to drag racing. Oh…and it appeals to VW fans, who are a diehard bunch to begin with!
Then along comes Vince “V-Man” Mosely who, about 7-8 years ago, builds the ultimate custom, the Ferrari-Nugen! Anybody in customizing has seen or at least heard of this piece. It’s probably the one custom that really raised the bar for people in the hobby. It was based on the Drag Bus but was stretched out. It had a ton of detail and some really sleek lines, utilizing the side panels from a Ferrari-based hauler. It opened peoples’ eyes to the potential in customizing diecast. It also really pulled at the heart-strings of a lot of collectors.
Enter Dave Chang, who casts a number of Vince’s “Nugen”. Somewhere along the line, the “Nugen” transforms into the “Evo”. I don’t know the business relationship between Vince and Dave so I won’t speak on it. All I know is that the design relationship is visible and obvious. Here you have a cool vehicle with a smooth gigantic canvas for some really cool original art.
Now the Evo is cast in limited numbers and released every few months with some killer graphics and the chance at obtaining an even more limited “chase” version with slightly different colors and a different wheel selection. The artwork is commissioned from some of the truly talented Japanese artists and customizers…or sometimes done by Dave himself, who is an accomplished graphic artist with an amazing resume.  They’re expensive but not outside the financial boundaries of most collectors. How could it not be a success???
Then along comes “Big Lou”, Luis Tanahara! Renowned for his design work with Jada and previously for his graphic work done with Hot Wheels, he steps onto the scene with another incredible custom design.
The Sledster hasn’t been around long enough for me to gather any specific information on the genesis of its design, but I can say that it truly is a rolling work of art. It takes on a number of design cues from the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s Art-Deco scene. It also utilizes a number of identifiable lines from the cars of that era. It’s a real ‘designers’ treat!
I happen to like it more than I like the Evo.
Maybe it’s because the design is geared toward a more select fanbase…and I don’t mean you have to be a Big Lou fan to enjoy it…I just mean that the lines appeal to a different crowd. That crowd is probably one that is a little more “right-brained”, a little more into art, and lines, and probably has more emotional attachment to the things that strike them. So I’m going to go out on a limb and say that the real Sledster fans are going to be the more hard-core fans. (There’s nothing like striking an emotional chord when you’re trying to build a fanbase in something as unnecessary as diecast toy cars   They’re a little more expensive though. It’s understandable, given the multi-piece design and the overall size of the piece, but this economic state isn’t helping the cause.
So, where am I going with all this???
Just pondering. Thinking. Wondering if there’s room for me out there in the “limited-edition, numbered casting, original design” market. Anyone got $100,000.00 you’re willing to invest?
Or how about a cool, marketable design. It has to be perfect.
I have been a super fan of Jada Toys since their mainstream success with their Dub City Diecast line
I have been a super fan of Jada Toys since their mainstream success with their Dub City Diecast line. Buying 2 cases of EVERYTHING they produced. I have visited their Head Quarters in the City of Industry, California.I have had the chance to hang out with the designers, share emails and phone calls. I have watched several key players leave Jada and move on to other diecast companies, solo ventures,and just fade away. I had a very close rapport with Luis “Big Lou” Tanahara which at the time was VP of Design at Jada ( when new HOT items were getting put into production). I have since curtailed severely all Jada purchases, with maybe 5-6 pieces a year that actually look decent.
A few years fast forward, SEI went to Hot Wheels, Big Castro headed to Maisto, Eric the Turk left the company, and in that mix Luis also left Jada,(whether on his own or other reasons not my business). And after all that turmoil it seems that the new person took the helm of the Design Dept Jada and lead it to SHIT! Not taking anything away from Glenn or Senor Roach ( As far as I am concerned Big Roach is the fucking MASTER in the packaging department!!!!!)
But it seems maybe the main guy is more in tuned with his T shirt designing or not into breaking the fresh diecast out as Luis did (i.e. Div Cruisers, Airflows, D Rodz etc.) I know the stagnant ass CAMARO concepts convertible and stock hard top are nasty and over played now. Fuck the blown muscle car shit,lets not go the muscle machine route. Or better yet lets do the played out ACTION DIECAST funny car thing. C’mon guys where the fuck is the creativity?? Oh wait maybe it is in fucking SPEED RACER or CHOP SOCKY CHOOKS, GUITAR HERO-ESQ AKA QUICKLY CLEARANCED items??…
Maybe the NEW GUY isn’t getting the blow job EGO worthy praises from the nerdy diecast idiot Roy Nakamura?? I see your not throwing him free shit proto pieces so now he is riding M2’s dick? Ask Eric the Turk,when he was at Jada, how far Roy was stuck up his ass and got MAD free shit and HTF pieces. Eric is gone and hasn’t heard from Roy in how long?
The industry is really in the fucking toilet in my opinion. Although the ONLY lines I see continually selling strong is Hot Wheels/Matchbox and the Disney CARS line. Why is that? Because they deliver hot innovative product constantly, and don’t need a design manager to get his fucking ego stroked to put out product.
Now the main point to this whole rant was to point out Jada Toys LAST innovative diecast idea from Luis Tanahara,the death of Jada Toys (unlesss you want guitar hero, rc’s, or chop socky chooks shit). Luis MADE JADA TOYS what it was, the NEW guy took the torch and dunked that shit in a bucket! VERY NICE! Luis to many maybe a shady guy, liar,asshole etc.But between him and the NEW guy, Luis always showed me loved during Jada times and not. I call Luis and vice versa, the NEW guy blows me off when I wish him and his family happy holidays or just to say whats up. Nothings says I am a fucking prick more. Big heads I guess. I DON’T STROKE EGO’S I TELL IT LIKE IT IS!!!!!!!!
Now onto the last pieces Jada released that blew the industry away as well as myself! One day Jada might make it back into the lime light?!?!
