There was a time when everything that was stamped with his name or infamous cameos were destined to be a hit. Biggie & Mase were a few but clearly those times and wonders are a thing of his past. He told us before that he won’t stop but after watching his latest effort…I’m begging Diddy to cease! Let’s just say Dirty Money’s “Love Come Down” isn’t making mine fall like what Evelyn Champagne King once did for me in the 80’s. To be completely honest, Diddy really never had rhyming skills but at least his past efforts were sincerely better than this new slow tempo talking…could it be blamed on those grills in his mouth? I mean we have to blame it on something! This video doesn’t compliment this song if that was even possible. It’s mainly dark, chime-ridden set makes it difficult to see the singers faces even with those annoying flashing lights…or is that the point? Damn…I really don’t have much more to add to this wack song/video. Musically Diddy, you’re DONE!!

Whenever I listen to music, I think about this certain phase in my life…you know that phase when you think you’re a musical elite because of what you listen to…I thought I was so cool because I listened to bands that no one knew or heard of. I thought it was cool to only listen to alternative rock bands or indie acoustic folk singers (I still LOVE listening to them, by the way) and I started hating on everything that wasn’t that. I started to become influenced by what certain people said and I sort of turned my back on what I grew up listening to (r&b, rap, and kpop- I mean I still feel gay listening to kpop but WHATEVER. IT’S CATCHY).

That was the biggest mistake of my life.
I was just denying who I was, trying to keep up some front. I ignored Biggie and Brian McKnight for a WHOLE YEAR. …by the time I was done ”acting” cool, I felt like my body wasted away. You don’t understand how refreshing it was to turn on Keyshia Cole after coming to my senses. I felt liberated. Geez.
When I think back to those times, I just crack up at how idiotic I was. I regret surpressing who I was and what musical tastes I preferred to get someone not to judge me and favor me. (That person ended up being the biggest regret of my life anyway).

So I wanted to say this for a long time for, you know, some closure:
To all the musical “elistists” out there- take your crap and shove it where the sun don’t shine because I could care less about what you think is good music.

Etsy is one of the few online properties to see its hit figures skewed more than 2:1 in favour of female visitors. It’s also one of the truly great inventions of the past decade. Rather than go out and spend £50 in an actual shop where items are made to some guarantee of quality for your missus’ Christmas present, all you now need to do is just type some proper nouns she njoys into Etsy’s search engine and bada bing, she’s now the proud recipient of a £3.99 John Barrowman bottle opener, or a knitting pattern for a tea cosy depicting Diane and Lloyd from “Say Anything”.

Anyway, being as rap fans don’t actually buy the CDs of any of the musicians they spend all their time talking about, they have a lot of disposable income. The Etsy crowd has belatedly twigged onto that and is now seeking a slice of that cashed-up pie. Here’s ten of the finest examples of this. It’s like a fucking Cracked.com post or something.

NWA tennis balls ($750)

The three thoughts I had here in order. Firstly “Wait, is that racist? I mean… nah, it’s just that it’s hard to depict a group of black guys solely through the medium of painting on tennis balls”. Secondly: “Hey, remember when Weetabix used to have Plaster of Paris models you could make of the Weetabix advertising characters? These look kinda like that if you left them in the oven too long”. Thirdly: “I’m gonna have to come up with some kinda tennis/NWA pun here, huh?” The best I could come up with was “Efil4safin”. There has to be better?

Really shitty drawing of Kanye West ($45)

Nobody’s really got a problem with “side parting and toothbrush tache” being all you need to add to a drawing to signify Hitler, but are we really now at the point where “glasses with lines drawn across them” automatically mean Kanye? Even when the rest of the drawing looks more like… I was going to say Gordon Kaye. His nose does look like he’s defecating as well.

Beastie Boys wall plaque ($12)

Kinda like this because it wipes Q-Tip entirely out of history. Ah well.

Run DMC/Taking Back Sunday t-shirt ($20)

In the tradition of those football scarves you see at midweek European games that say “Fulham FC” on one side and “Esbjerg Forenede Boldklubber” on the other, what better way is there to declare your allegiances to both hip-hop’s first supergroup, and… you know. Whatever it is Taking Back Sunday do.

Snoop Dogg caricature ($10)

Apparently Snoop Dogg is a Moroccan with a chess bishop instead of a chin. The same artist also has a delightful piece for the “patriot in your family”, featuring an even larger titted Jessica Rabbit shoving a rocket in the anus of a generic Muslim. How can you not salute?

Slim Shady “cat patch” ($4)
“Meet Slim Shady: he’s a cool cat rocking the color purple”. All this does is remind me that “The Slim Shady Show” cartoon was an actual thing that was advertised in every single magazine for about two and a half years around 2001. Google helpfully informs me that the cartoon “poked fun at Christina Aguilera”. No cats, though.

Handcrafted Xzibit mixed-media montage ($65)

Xzibit’s 2002 album “Man Vs Machine” featured no singles you now remember and also had a promotional video directed by the DJ from Linkin Park. The album cover does feature Mr X To Tha Z holding a gas mask, but like most people I’m too hypnotised by the size of his forearms to notice anything he’s holding. What is it with crazy Goth broads and rubber-encased gas masks, anyway? Nothing that looks like the inside of a sausage machine should be sexualised, imo.

2Pac and Biggie badges ($6)

A joyous reminder of the glory days when every town centre marketplace would have one stall selling, alongside Metallica t-shirts and Manchester United banners, a shit tonne of badges, usually with funny slogans like “The voices in my head don’t like you” and pictures of the dead dude from Sublime on. Biggie feuded with 2Pac, had the silhouette of Hitchcock, fucked like Hawkins and probably went through ¾ of “Mastering the Art of French Cooking” in an average day’s diet, so it’s good that it’s a themed set.

I’m real proud to throw this party in a month, I can’t wait in fact.  I’ve often sat back and thought about the artists that could actually rival each other – Prince and MJ, Stevie and nobody, you know how it goes….And Biggie vs Jay-Z was always in my mind growing up.  It’s kind of an old school party with a twist.  I did a mixtape that runs through the beginning of their careers right till the present, and then touching on the past and recreating songs like “hypnotize” or “show me what ya got” on the turntables.  It’s short but I’m real proud of this mixtape…

BIG & HOV

It’s these two that really took over!  First NYC, and then they took the music industry by storm.  Apparently, they’re each other’s favourite rappers, and although they sound totally different, they had tones in common including the fact that came from an experience dealing in the streets.  They were both fans of the 90s golden era rap, yet were able to go pop without losing their core audience.  Jigga even toured with Big Daddy Kane in the early days.

While Tribe and Preemo were digging for obscure jazz loops to freak into new things, Jay and BIG were tearing up verses over 70s and almost retro party anthems, and still flipping the B-side with gems for the underground.  Remember ‘A Million & One Questions” by HOV, a classic banger produced by Preemo.  Then you have BIG droppin’ tracks like ‘Warning’ and ‘Who Shot Ya?’, certified classics!

There definitely is no arguing that there are many greats, and these two probably caused more controversy than anyone else.

BIG

BIG causes arguments because he had a lot of party records, and because he was on Bad Boy many true hip hop heads don’t consider him in the same group as those listed above.  However you can’t doubt his lyrical prowess, from the infamous freestyle on the street corner in BK, to his lyrical assault on tracks like ‘Dead Wrong’.  BIG was truly one of a kind and one of the best to ever do it.

HOV

There is no doubting that he is the CEO of Hip-Hop.  He has the hottest chick in the game wearing his chain, Ex-President of Def Jam, Co-Founder of Roc-A-Wear, official NY ambassador, and he’s sold millions and basically become a household name.  From his start with Original Flavor, then going on to his solo career, he has accomplished it all.  He can lace the hardest beat from Just Blaze, or give that edge to a commercial pop track from Amy Winehouse.  He does it all while maintaining his style and credibility.

The 1st song by the notorious B.I.G. that I ever heard and liked was “The Ten Crack Commandments.”  Rule Nombre Uno, he opines, is to “never let no one know how much dough you hold.”  This fit in with a personal philosophy of mine: that one that should endeavor not to disclose how much one has to others.  In fact, within reason, the more disadvantaged you seem to others, the better off you are.  If you don’t appear wealthy, they won’t be jealous of you and try to tear you down.  It is always better to over-estimate and be under-estimated.

This has application in the present personal challenge.  For the balance of this post and this challenge, I will no longer be talking about my meals in as much detail as I have previously.   I will not tell you, or the others attempting to win this personal challenge, about the meal I made last night– of the caramelized onions, the minced mushrooms browned over medium-sized flames, the way that the egg rose and flattened, as if breathing, before I folded it over the filling and then put it between two slices of bread to make a wondrous sandwich, overstuffed to the point that the filling fell out and I had to eat it with a fork from the plate.  I’ll also not discuss the bowl of diced, microwaved potatoes, with resistant outer layers and tender, steaming insides.  I won’t go into the tofu and vegetables waiting for me at home, or the seven eggs I anticipate having left over, as well as the chicken, rice, potatoes and onions I won’t be able to eat.  What’s the point?  I have enough food to last me far past the end of this week for the challenge, but talking about it to excess will give away my position.

In terms of the challenge, then, there is no debate left.  I won, and I thank God, my family, my friends and all of the people who believed in me, in that order.  Now, it’s time to start talking about what winning means.

First, it should be clear that most of our writing has been somewhat in jest.  We recognize that there is no way to replicate the experience of living on food checks and welfare other than to actually do it.  “Doing it” includes the conditions of living in poverty not just those limitations on budget.  None of us had these limitations; with only financial constraints, this was really “Welfare-lite.”

I can also see where surviving for months, or years, on food stamps would be difficult (and, as my girlfriend pointed out, mentally and emotionally challenging as well).  While it’s entirely conceivable for people to survive on this allocation, the advantages my fellow participants have in terms of mobility, access and time – especially the advantages Mitch has taken advantage of over and over again in each of these areas – have made this a sort of mockery of a week on welfare and food stamps.  We’ve not lived like we were on Welfare; we adapted Welfare budgets to our own conditions and goals.  I believe that my food eventually came from four different stores, at least; it is not reasonable to expect that others would enjoy the same mobility and access.  To accurately live as if we were on Welfare, each individual should have been given a typical set of goods to purchase from a single store within a certain distance from their abode.

Nothing in life is ever perfect; there are always limited resources.  For people in a position where they have limited resources, sometimes one must give up other things in order to make intelligent decisions.  Indeed, since we have always had limited resources, we’ve always made decisions on how to best allocate these resources – even Bill Gates and Warren Buffett have to decide how they want to spend their money, since they can’t buy everything.  In this case, I believe I’ve made the most intelligent decisions possible given my resources.

I also recognize that my own success in eating a healthy, well-balanced diet over the course of the week by no means is what most people on welfare can actually accomplish, just as many people on welfare will not be able to smoke or drink as much as the other participants did this week. I think that my situation does show it’s possible, but I’m in no position to say that my consumption levels are available for anyone on Welfare.

I still believe that it is possible to eat healthy food on this limited budget.  Except for Tom, everyone seems to have had relatively healthy meals; however, I think I may be the only person in the group to have had healthy meals in both wide variety and abundance.  This came down to choices: what to consume and where to buy it.  I made the choices to forgo other options on which to spend my money.  I’ve never done any illegal drugs, even pot; thus, I was not tempted to reserve part of my budget for these.  I rarely drink alcohol, so I was not tempted to put money aside for that – it wasn’t an option.  I don’t smoke cigarettes, so I haven’t been shopping around for rolling papers.  I drink a cup of coffee a day; that was relatively easy and inexpensive to secure.

What I will take away from this is that I can live healthily on a lot less than I used to use for food.   From now on I am going to endeavor to eat on about the equivalent of $25 a week, saving more money for long-term financial stability.  Instead of budgeting for weeks, though, I’ll be purchasing for longer terms – i.e., using a bulk bag of onions over weeks, and buying them when I run out, rather than aiming to just purchase for the upcoming week.  I’ll also be donating more money to help feed those who don’t have the advantages that I have.

I had a dollar and change left after this challenge.  At lunch, I went to the Mexican grocery store near my work and purchased 20 five-cent candies.  I left them at the counter with one of the managers and asked him to give them to the next 20 children that walked in for free.  After all, many of them are poor and their parents might be on welfare; they would enjoy the candy more than I would.

And with that, I won.  Now for a celebratory meal.

The Isley Brothers have had lots of their songs sampled and interpolated, especially “For The Love Of You”, “Choosey Lover”, and “Footsteps In The Dark”. But if there’s one Isleys song that’s put the most food on the table for them and others, it’s “Between The Sheets”. Mr. Biggs n’nem have caked off crazily from the song that put them back on the map in the ’80s. Lemme start from the beginnin’, at the top of the (abridged) list.

Isley Brothers “Between The Sheets” (1983): Had to start with the reason why we’re here. Not only has this song done a lot for a number of new artists, it also did a lot for the brothers themselves. At the time, they hadn’t had a hit that big in five years. Clearly, it must’ve gotten a lotta play in the homes of some kids who’d grow up to be rappers and producers in the following decade.

A Tribe Called Quest “Bonita Applebum (Remix)” (1990): Q-Tip & co. become the first (to my knowledge) to use it, for the second part of their ode to Bonita. Might also be the first remix to damn near be a totally different song, but don’t quote me on that. With the help of the sample and the always-catchy hook, this is one of ATCQ’s most memorable remixes.

Common Sense “Breaker 1/9″ (1992): Before you get between the sheets, you must steer clear of cock-blockers. They can be your friends, the potential partner’s friends, or sometimes your own cock. Here, Common channels the Isleys while chastising the people and predicaments that get in the way of a good time.

Da Brat “Funkdafied” (1994): That little waterbug Jermaine Dupri gets all slick with it and opts not to sample the music, but play it himself. Still, I’m sure he paid just like everyone else to kick off the career of your favorite stud and mine, Da Brat-Tat-Tat-Tat. The result was one of the biggest records of ‘94 and the first solo female MC to go platinum. Baptized in da funk!

Vicious “Nika” (1994): As the hip-hop/reggae thing was still rolling strong in the mid-’90s, the young protege of Doug E. Fresh, Lil’ Vicious came through dedicating this one to his favorite girl.  While singing/chatting/rapping about bicycles and icicles, Vicious’ “Nika” uses not one but TWO parts of “Between The Sheets”. Ladies say “owww!”, brothas say “hooo!”

Keith Murray “The Most Beautifullest Thing In This World” (1994): You’ll never hear a song with this many big words on the radio again (let alone one with the word “beautifullest” in it), but Keith popped up in late-’94 with this one and blew up crazy. With Erick Sermon replaying the music just like that muskrat Jermaine Dupri did, Mr. Murray danced on top of a Lexus and made a nice lil’ hit for himself. And just when you thought artists in ‘94 had used that Isleys shit to death…

Notorious B.I.G. “Big Poppa” (1994): You knew it was comin’… the biggest hit (of the ’90s, anyway) to use the sample was B.I.G.’s second single from one of my favorite albums. This beat was originally to be used by the Lost Boyz, but they passed it back to Bad Boy in exchange for a track that later became “Jeeps, Lex Coupes, Bimaz, & Benz”. With Christopher lacing his lyrical douches in your bushes, “Big Poppa” became a major hit that’s still heard today.

Kandi Burruss, formerly of Xscape, now of The Real Housewives of Atlanta, talks to The Urban Daily about the infamous shots from Big on “Dreams”, and reveals that he apologized to Tiny at the Petersen Automotive Museum the night he was killed. It’s funny because with Kandi being in the news lately, I had been wondering how she felt about that line after all these years. I’ll say this though, she certainly stepped her game up from the Xscape days.  No comment on Tiny and the other two.

One of the greatest lines ever, if you never happened to nod your head to this one, turn off your computer now. And throw it out of your window.

And what about the instrumental to this song? One of the best ever, easily.

The roots of this masterpiece are deep into Premo’s collection, to a dusty vinyl from 1958. He already revealed us the source where he took the sample, but i want to focus on the original track once again. This track is so exotic, unusual sounding and the performer is nothing short than weird. A very original enterpreneur, nowadays I see few stage talents like Mr. “Screamin” Jay Hawkins around. I mean, Reggae frontman Anthony B usually waves a wand when he performs, but a skull Wand is still one step further.  Let’s watch one of his crazy performances once again.

Apparently, the inspiration Screamin’ Jay put into this song is far from exhausted. Check the version Stenchman just put out, droppin straight to your nearest dancefloor. What do you think of it? I love it. I find it very loyal to the spirit of the original one.
