Les historiens d’art ont depuis fort longtemps montré la vanité et l’insignifiance de la distinction entre beaux-arts et arts appliqués. Le consensus a beau sembler unanime, dans le monde du marché de l’art – en particulier en France – et dans certaines institutions plus réactionnaires – bien que souvent ce soient précisément celles qui s’estiment à la pointe de la contemporainéité – on considère encore qu’il existe une échelle de valeur mercantile et qualitative et qu’il ne faut pas tout mélanger.

A ce petit jeu, certains media s’en sortent mieux que d’autres. Le bijou, lui, est systématiquement – du moins en France – associé à la joaillerie ou, s’il ne remplit ses critères de préciosité objective, à la fantaisie. Que lui repproche-t-on, en fait ? La rengaine est toujours la même, c’est la notion d’utilité qui s’oppose au phatasme d’un art gratuit, ou plutôt autonome et inutile, débordant par là des sphères de la contingence matérielle pour atteindre une dimension transcendentale. Quiconque a lu ne fusse qu’un livre sur l’art du XXe siècle reconnaîtra l’anachronisme de cette conception romantique (au chronologique du mot, voyez Gautier et Mlles de Maupin) de l’art pour l’art. (Pour ceux qui n’ont rien lu, je rappelle que l’art social est passé par là en même temps, mais aussi, plus tard, l’art nouveau, le bauhaus et le fonctionalisme, que, de Duchamp au muralistes sud-américains, un grand nombre d’artistes et de courants importants ne retrouvent pas du tout dans cette idée historiquement et géographiquement circonscrite.)

Mais il vaut tout de m’eme la peine, je crois, d’examiner cette idée d’utilité un peu plus en profondeur. Mon hypothèse est que les méthodes de l’anthropologie de l’art peuvent apporter une compréhension plus fine.

Quelle est la fonction d’un bijou ? On lit souvent qu’il affirme un statut social, se permettant dès lors de le rapprocher des signes extérieurs de richesse les plus vulgaires, comme une voiture… ou un tableau de maître. Plus simplement, il s’agit de parure. Un mauvais esprit se demanderait quelle est la différence entre parer un corps et parer un mur, ce qui est la fonction première, voire unique, de la peinture inutile et autonome. Je ne cherche pas à jouer au pamphlétaire, aussi vais-je vraiment tenter de répondre à cette question.

Récemment traduit en français sous le titre L’art et ses agents, le maître-ouvrage de l’anthropologue Alfred Gell définit et observe les objets artistiques en terme d’agentivité, c’est-à-dire de sphère d’influence donnée ou reçue. Il décrit ainsi un portrait dans un musée comme étant le résultat de l’agentivité d’un prototype (le modèle) sur un artiste qui lui agit sur un indice (le tableau) qui à son tour agit sur un destinataire/patient (le spectateur). La notion d’indice n’est pas très courante en dehors des cercles sémiotiques (Pierce en particulier) et des romans policiers.  Gell définit l’indice comme un objet qui suscite une abduction d’agentivité, c’est-à-dire une reconstruction mentale où le spectateur devine une intention d’action sociale derrière l’objet, un but de mise en relation.

Le modèle peut fonctionner dans tous les sens, tous les membres de l’équation peuvent interagir les uns avec les autres soit dans la fonction d’agent ou celle de patient. Il s’agit donc d’une grille de description assez pratique.

Comment décrire alors l’insertion d’un bijou dans une telle sphère ?

Le bijou est un indice qui subit l’agentivité d’un artiste, mais aussi celle du destinataire qui, en le portant, l’active pour agir sur un  destinataire second.

Il s’agit en fait d’un schéma proche de celui où l’œuvre d’art est agencée par un commissaire d’exposition pour enrichir ses niveaux de signification. On pourrait presque dire que le bijou est une œuvre qui transporte son musée avec elle.

Cette compoaraison n’est peut-être pas anodine. Le statut de curateur/artiste tel qu’il a été élaboré et pratiqué par un Harald Szeemann est aujourd’hui, à cause de ses excès, remis en question.  Mais ce n’est sans doute pas là ce qui pose problème.

Le souci vient plutôt probablement de ce que ce ne serait pas l’œuvre seule qui exerce son agentivité sur un spectateur, mais de l’œuvre mise en relation avec un corps. En découle notamment la difficulté pour le bijou de s’exposer indépendemment du corps, dans un musée par exemple. Il s’agit bien d’une difficulté mais pas d’une impossibilité, les nombreuses expostitions de bijoux en témoignent. Mais elles témoignent aussi d’une nécéssaire réflexion sur le mode d’accrochage, le display muséographique, faute de quoi peut paraître pauvre en signification. Je ne donnrai pas d’exemple, nous en avons tous en tête. Je préfère exemplariser des réussites avec des moyens fort divers.

Le très fameux Rudt Peeters a orné la facade d’un immeuble amstellodamois de faux cristaux à l’échelle du bâtiment. Le corps est ici dépassé au profit du monument et ce travail me semble bien souligner la polyvalence de la notion de parure.

Plus récemment et d’une manière comparable, la jeune artiste Liesbet Bussche a proposé des bijoux de ville, transformant par ses interventions le mobilier urbain en bijoux à l’échelle de la rue.

Une autre artiste, Noémie Doge, a également réfléchi sur cette question en proposant deux solutions différentes. Une de ses collection a été montrée dans le cadre d’un défilé de mode. Le bijou était donc montré activé, selon ce que nous avons vu plus haut. Mais, pour insister sur sa valeur intrinsèque et non comme le simple instrument d’un look, les modèles étaient immobiles sur le podium. Dans une exposition récente au Centre d’Art Contemporain de Genève, elle a présenté des colliers fixés au mur sans indiquer, même par une photo, qu’ils pouvaient être portés. Leur aspect graphique et leur grand nombre entraînaient un doute sur leur fonction.

Il s’agit là, me direz-vous peut-être, d’expériences limite. Mais ce qui définit, à mon sens, la contemporanéité, ou plus simplement la modernité, d’une pratique, c’est précisément l’exploration des limites. Sinon, on peut en effet faire de la joaillerie ou du bijou fantaisie.

Si vous avez d’autres exemples à partager, positifs ou négatif, il serait précieux de poursuivre en commentaires.

Maitreya Gold is featuring a stylish stiletto with prim feet at the 2009 SL Footwear Expo.  This one is called Shanti in Snow Leopard, a luxurious snow leopard pattern, with rosy pink inner lining.  The snow leopard print (I really DO love you Onyx!), but I have to say it, lends itself easily to using with dalmatian prints.  I was easily tempted to wear a thick, long, black fur coat with this, but let’s face it, who wants to be old Cruella de Vil, when you can be chic, young, Cruella. The stylish chic girl about town, with a dark side. ;P

The Maitreya Gold Shanti Snow Leopard, features everything we’ve been spoilt by them, Shoe HUD that allows you to tint to match, with easy reference card to many skin lines for an exact match, slots to save various tones to, and ability to change your pedicure.  All this in a sexy heel.  I am on pins and needles to see if they release this in a full range of animal prints.  This ones for charity some come give and look amazing for it.

Aoharu - Bijou

I went with Bijou’s Selfish dress (ha! apropos for Cruella), it’s a highly versatile outfit, with full flexi babydoll like dress option, also optional is a leather wrap around for the bodice.  It features a short mini, a tank, and prim belt.   I wore Aoharu’s Shiny Down jacket in pink, but chose to not wear the sculpted prim parka jacket body, and prim cuffs, creating a bolero jacket effect.  Aoharu also includes a number of options with jacket purchase, which include sculpted collar, fur-trimmed hood, hood up option, and unisex size!

I matched my jacket perfectly to my lipstick on my Chaisuki Gina skin, vamped up her hair with Dernier Cri’s Natasha style in black with white tips.  Did you know Cruella was known to drink ink?  Perhaps her hair looked like this when she was younger. I have a tip for you when wearing prim lashes with bangs, the alpha’s will make the lashes show through, so make a copy of your lashes, wear the copy, edit the part that will be covered by moving those pieces into your skull, add left eye or right eye, bottom right, whichever applies to the lash name and voila, prim lashes and bang! Shown here is a modded Celestial Studios Club Collection lash.

alaMood - Akhai Teke Set

I am wearing alaMood’s beautifully textured Akhai Teke Set, a mix of gold, silver, and white metal.  The effect is striking, and yet soft.  The set features a necklace, earrings, and cuffs.  Easily modded if not a perfect fit straight out of the folder, shown here I moved the necklace to the spine attachment point, as my jacket collar was attached to chest.

In a city, the winter is never romantic, except on a day when it has just snowed and nothing can move (which is almost never). Nevertheless, women have to look sleek, fashionable and sexy and still keep warm.

So what does a stylish woman wear? Well if she is climbing in a cab and out to a doorway, she doesn’t need a quilted down jacket able to withstand temps at –30F. She just needs a faux fur collar cardigan and some kickin’ boots. I show here an outfit from Kotobuki Jewell that I purchased last year. It came out of the winter closet with nary a wrinkle—the great design still works this year.

Check the clever use of the prims, the careful attention to carrying the sweater bottom to the system piece so when the prims move, you still seem like you are wearing a cardigan, the stylish line of the whole ensemble. It’s what a smart city lady wears so she looks dressed well but not uptight and overly tailored.

My hair flies free (despite some sort of haloing glitch in the Emerald viewer, among other grievous problems with said client). Truth Hawks is making the hair women in SL love—stylish but not overly styled, contemporary but not cutting edge, sexy but not contrived.

Boots from B&G complete the look. These are clearly photosourced but still well built and a great alternative to all the old standards. One great feature is that there just doesn’t appear to be a huge invisiprim on the boots, creating that embarrassing disappearing act on everything else around it.

Snow and slush and cold be damned…

Keys are hot right now.  If you don’t believe me, ask Tiffany.

Key necklaces, lock necklaces.  I was flipping through a fashion mag recently, and saw the Tiffany and Co. ad, which reminded me of all the key necklaces I have in SL, and I thought I’d show ‘em off.  Of course, The Dark Mouse Locked Up necklace ties into the theme perfectly.  I really enjoy the contrast of the chunky padlocks with the delicate chain.

So, today we’re looking at the materials and length.  Where on the avatar does the key pendant fall on the chest?  What is the chain like, or is it a string of leather? Is the key shiny or tarnished?  What kind of embellishments  – scrollwork, gems, etc — does each key have?  Personally, I like them all.  Moving from left to right, the Magpie Beaded Key necklace has a nice whimsical quality, with the hand-blown glass key and beads. The Miriel Secret necklace (no longer available) is well-balanced, with nice detailing.  The Evica Key on a String has a lovely simplicity, and looks like something I’d string up in RL.  The Blue Pearl Antique Lace and Key necklace is adorable, with the feminine lace bow tied to the key.  Finally, the *G Field* Key necklace has a nice charm, with the blue stones and scrollwork.

Other awesomeness: I’m wearing Adam n Eve’s Amanda skin in the Glossy makeup, which looks put-together without being overdone, for an everyday look.  The hair is Autumn Leaves from Tiny Bird, and includes the mask.  It has great messiness, and I love the narrative quality the mask adds to the picture.  My top is from the Bijou Absinthe set, and is quite lovely, I promise, though you can’t see much of it.  Finally, I took the first picture in Jordan Giant’s My Secret Place attic skybox, and is exactly as it sounds — a cozy personal hideaway.

Les 5 et 6 septembre, la commune du Gâvre abritait la Fête de la Préhistoire et la 4^ème manche du Championnat de Bretagne de tir aux armes préhistoriques.

Enfants comme adultes ont pu découvrir la vie et le quotidien à l’époque néolithique. Au programme du week-end, de nombreuses animations :

débardage d’un arbre à cheval, techniques d’allumage du feu, atelier de bijoux, de peintures préhistoriques, atelier culinaire, atelier de fouilles pour les enfants, mise à l’eau d’une pirogue, techniques forestières et sortie commentée sur le site récemment découvert, l’Alignement du Pilier.

I don’t know what it is about drow skins but they drive me mad in a good way.  I don’t get the opportunity to be a drow inworld, unless I get lucky and hit a stash of drow skins.  GeEs Designs has drow skins at their booth at Vanity Universe Skin Fair.  Maybe its the they are so sophisticated looking reminiscent of the luminous quality of old black and white films, that appeals to me or the edgy, look of the fully dressed drow.

GeEs Designs has included a range of makeups, and even tattoos on face and cleavage.  These are a lovely medium dark tone, which I wore with my The Body Politik elf ears, which are menu color changeable worn in Dark Drow.

Even though its grey in tone, the luminous highlights show through, body nicely defined.  The range of makeups also feature some on face tattoos, and additional skins with matching tattoos on cleavage.

I took advantage of being dressed for this to head over to my stores main location at Oubliette.  It’s a wonderland of nature currently Autumn themed.  My only destination there dressed as a drow could be our cave system in the South Eastern quadrant for some location shots to test the skin in the proper drow environment.

Vanity Universe Skin Fair opens November 7th, 2009 at 12 pm SLT, and ends November 22, 2007 at 12AM SLT.  5 days of giving towards an important cause!

Cela faisait très longtemps que je rêvais de faire cette trousse aubergine réalisée par Elle parue dans un Quiltmania C’est chose faite, après quelques jours sans enfants. I created three casual looks mixing some pieces from Aoharu, Emery, Lelutka, Armidi and *Curiosity* Store. This handsome guy shown above is part of a new shape line from Totem Store that will be released soon. These three beautiful watches are the new release from Kalnins Fashion, they come with some features like adjustable GMT zone, shininess, glow, resize and have an easy menu control.

Today is Pink Hijab Day around the world.  What’s this about, you ask?  There are two goals: first, to increase understanding of the hijab, and second, to raise money for a cure for breast cancer.  Now, I am not Muslim, but I have a deep respect for the religion and those that follow it, and that respect includes what are often perceived as cultural differences, such as wearing a hijab, or headscarf.  Hijab is specifically the headscarf, but also often refers to dressing oneself modestly in general.  While I do not usually wear hijab, today I have chosen my wardrobe in support of fellow women who choose to do so.  Hijab, for the women wearing it, does not usually mean oppression in the “western” world; most feel empowered and protected.  Wearing hijab is not only a symbol of religious submission to God, but also a symbol of feminist empowerment, a celebration of being judged for our minds and not our bodies. 

And today, women around the world wear pink hijab, in support of finding a cure for breast cancer.  It’s easy to forget, in a country where American football players dress in bright pink to increase breast cancer awareness and raise funds to find a cure, that discussing the matter is shameful in parts of the world, and women aren’t getting the treatment they need.  Sometimes it’s easy to forget it’s a global problem.  Today, I wear hijab to remind us all.

On a fashion note: I’m wearing the Color Change Keffiyeh Hijab from Sakinah — the scarf and headscarf can each be changed to 8 different pinky color combos, with four solids and four patterns, for a ridiculous number of looks.  The pattern of the keffiyeh is perfectly mirrored in the houndstooth coat, representing the fact that there are far more global universals than there are differences, if we only take the time to look.

haihai!…It’s clearly obvious I’ve had a lot time to kill lately and apart from it, I just wanna have fun blogging! So as I got home from college, I was thinking about making a couple of outfits, based on some ‘high school stereotypes’. I have not succeeded though, but had it in mind while mix and matching (a whole damn lot). Because it’s not my intention to spam feeds with pictures I figured I’d just squeeze them all together *clearly not a pretty picture* but hey, I’m lazy and I almost got sick of changing.
