It’s great to see the bicycle miles and trips rack up from our Corporate Challengers! If you haven’t been keeping track, go check out the previous posts to see the daily totals. We’re going to have a big party at the Firkin and Fox on Friday night the 18th to celebrate everyone’s hard work this week. In addition to announcing the winners of the Corporate Challenge, we’re going to have live music from Notch 8, and a raffle with prizes you don’t want to miss out on. Money collected from the raffle goes to benefit Muscle Powered, Citizens for a Walkable and Bikeable Carson City.

Last year’s winners of the woman’s cruiser

The Bicycle Authority helped us with the grand prizes again this year, two Custom Beach Cruisers from Phat Cycles! These two bikes are the nicest we’ve given away yet, a little more custom than last year’s. We traditionally give the bikes away before it gets too dark, giving people without lights the opportunity to ride home safely.

Men’s Cruiser

In addition to the bikes from Bicycle Authority, there are plenty of other fantastic prizes to give away, all donated by our other Bike to Work Week Sponsors! And yes, you MUST be present to win. This year’s sponsors are:

Muscle Powered Fact: Muscle Powered wrote successful grants which purchased two bridges that are on the Mexican Ditch Trail. Read about the bridges HERE

Commuter Tip: Keep your tire pressure 5 to 10 psi below the recommended maximum pressure listed on the tire’s sidewall. Too much psi will send road shock directly to the handle bars and saddle resulting in a very jarring ride, while a slightly lower psi will provide dampening, allowing for a pleasurable bicycle commute.

Please visit Bike Carson for information on this evening’s cruiser ride.

Here as an amusing story from DMV bicycle commuter Dennis White:
“My bike story of frustration – On my morning ride in this morning I had to ride over the 395 (down by Best Buy) and it appears that NDOT has taken out the bike lane in their current construction phase. So I had to take the lane and to my pleasant surprise everyone respected me and gave me the lane except for 1 vehicle. The unfortunate part is that the one vehicle that chose not to yield to me in the lane was an NDOT vehicle (one of those while trucks). Is this how NDOT will attempt to secure a victory?? Taking out the competition?? Haha “

That’s a funny joke Mother Nature played on us. Responding to pleas that we hold the Spokane Bike to Work Week later than the national week because our Kickoff Breakfast always gets rained on, we scheduled this year’s events for Sunday, May 20-Saturday, May 26.

And did you get a load of that weather forecast for this week, which is National Bike to Work Week? Sunny and beautiful. Every. Single. Day. Next week? A little partly cloudy heading our way.

But not on Monday, I hasten to add. We will have a nice morning for the Kickoff Breakfast. This is your warm-up week and next week is the real deal.

So here’s the deal: You need to sign up. We want everyone who bikes to count and be counted and that’s what your registration does.

It’s a simple little form–about 30 seconds of your time–at the Spokane Bikes website. While you’re there you can RSVP for our fun events so the good folks serving up the food know how many riders to expect.

Monday, May 21, 7-9am: Kickoff Breakfast, Riverfront Park Gondola Meadows. Founding sponsor Mountain Gear will be serving up those great pancakes, and Roast House Coffee will pour some Ride the Edge to get you properly caffeinated for the day!

Wednesday, May 23, 6:30-8:30am or thereabouts: Energizer Stations, various locations. Date/time may vary depending on the specific location/sponsor so check the map and plan your route to get a boost on your way to work or whatever your destination may be.

Thursday, May 25, 4:30-6:30pm: Wrap-Up Party, Steam Plant Grill (another founding sponsor and a great bike-friendly restaurant with that rack in their covered parking area). Pay attention, peeps–party is on Thursday! Usually we wrap up on Friday but since the change of date pointed us into Memorial Day Weekend, we thought we’d party early, encourage you to ride one more day in the week, and leave Friday for you and the family.

Commute Challenge: All month long! Use the form to share how many vehicle miles you’ve avoided by riding your bike and help add to the awesomeness.

And did I mention you should sign up?

There’s a kerfuffle going on at my workplace. Just in time for Bike to Work Week, the route we’ve cycled for many years has been fenced. Catholic Cemeteries of Northeast Kansas has uncharitably blocked access to its central Topeka graveyard by fencing out the joggers, cyclists, and walkers who brought the grounds alive with their presence. Now, the neighborhood kids won’t laugh at each others’ jokes as they pass through on their way to school. The sweet little old lady will have to find another place to see the sun rise while walking her dachshund. The cemetery will belong to the dead.

Did the cemetery staff know this when they ordered the fence? Did anyone observe the wear patterns in the grass and consider how this would affect the long-term health of the grounds and the living beings who used it? Perhaps they did, and decided the cyclists and walkers were part of the problem. Sadly, that seems to be a common perception: if you’re not in a car, you must be up to no good.

Silver lining: new route, new pond

After an initial exchange of annoyed emails, my coworkers and I began plotting out a new route to work. There is no way we’re going to be kept from cycling, ever, but especially during Bike to Work Week. Yesterday I rode the new way for the first time and found, to my surprise, it’s actually a more pleasurable trip. It’s over a mile longer, but avoids a busy intersection that always made me nervous. There are two new ponds to enjoy on misty mornings. There’s also a new, long hill to make the muscles a bit stronger, but that’s a small price to pay for the privilege of biking to work. Funny how clouds can have silver linings.

Happy Bike to Work Week!

Kristy Moser enjoying the Freeway Bike Path photo by Jeff Moser

Muscle Powered Fact: In 2000, NDOT had no intention of including a bike path along the Carson City freeway bypass as specified in the City’s bicycle plan. When Muscle Powered got wind of this we took action, but it wasn’t easy. Even the Carson City Chamber of Commerce publicly opposed the bike path, but because of the perseverance and dedication of our founding members, Carson City has a three mile bike path which connects N. Carson Street to Northridge Drive. And today Lumos & Associates is working with Carson City to extend the bike path all the way to Hwy 50W.

Skip ahead 10 years…
With a much different political climate, and some very dedicated NDOT employees, NDOT has dominated the Bike to Work Week Corporate Challenge for two years in a row, shredding the competition with 1117.25 miles and 252 trips on foot or by bike. What a difference a decade makes. Way to go NDOT!

Commuter Tip: It’s a good idea to carry a rag with you in case of a roadside repair. I wrap my tools (multi-tool, tire lever, zip-ties, patch kit, 2″x2″ tuffy strip-for sidewall repair) in a clean rag so I have something to wipe my hands on after a repair.

School District of Onalaska staff will log their bicycle miles May 12-18 in hopes of claiming the traveling trophy that has been won by the City of Onalaska for the past four years. This is part of the regional Bike to Work Week activities May 12 – May 18.

In addition to the School District and the City, the Onalaska campuses of Gundersen Lutheran and Mayo Clinic Health System are in on the competition to tally the most miles on bicycles during Bike to Work Week. The district will also be competing for the Golden Helmet award, which covers the whole Coulee Region.

According to Larry Dalton, one of the district’s wellness team leaders, “Last year we had about 5 percent of our employees commute during Bike to Work Week. Bike commuting is just not possible for a lot of our staff. But this year, we are encouraging biking for recreation, fitness, and miscellaneous errands as well as commuting – biking for any reason. We think more people can participate this way.”

The School District of Onalaska encourages employee wellness through its wellness program Well Ona Way!

[ooyala code="BiY3ZvNDrJ5g9p62_wz14KEB85SE9Jlc"]

MILWAUKEE — Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele and other dignitaries from the city of Milwaukee kicked off Bike to Work Week Monday afternoon, May 14th. They rode their bicycles to the grand opening of the new Milwaukee office for the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin.

Among the other officials taking part were Alderman Nik Kovac and Alderman Michael Murphy.

Riders gathered at Milwaukee City Hall on Market Street, between Wells and Kilbourn Avenue at 4 p.m. They rode together along the Hank Aaron Trail to the new office located in the Pedal Milwaukee Building at 3618 West Pierce Street. Part of the route took the bicyclists over the new bike lanes on South 2nd St.

Officials encourage workers to join Milwaukee’s Bike to Work Week effort, and ditch their cars for bicycles this week. “It is doable. I mean, there are so many ways you can go about it. I have bike shorts on under my dress. You can get a rack, get a couple of bags, put clothes on your bike, bring a spare pair of shoes, whatever you need to do,” Leah Delaney with South Shore Cyclery said.

One bike enthusiast hopes to see more bicyclists year round. “When you`re outside, you don`t sit in your car and warm up. You`re on your bike and you`re outside. It`s part of my health care plan,” Johannes Britz said.

There was no snow or cold to worry about during Monday’s kick off – just sunshine and warm temperatures.

Milwaukee County Transit System buses are equipped with bike racks, allowing people to ride a little and bike a little this week.

Drivers are reminded the law requires that bicyclists are given a three-foot passing area.

[worldnow id=7247265 width=450 height=375 type=video]

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – May is National Bike Month, and this week marks Bike To Work Week. As you hop aboard your two-wheeler, there are a few safety tips you’ll want to keep in mind.

Natalie Kane talked with Kat McCarthy of Calhoun Cycle on Monday morning to make sure commuters get off on the right foot.

The first thing you’ll want to make sure is that your bicycle’s tires are fully inflated. The tire will say somewhere along the side how many PSI you should be inflating them.

Another important piece of safety equipment: lights. You’ll want to have both a headlight affixed to the front of your bike, as well as a taillight at the rear. That way you can see the road ahead of you and be seen by approaching vehicles.

Perhaps the most crucial piece of safety equipment is, of course, the helmet. Not only should you buy and wear a helmet, you should make especially sure that it fits your head properly. It should be covering your forehead.

A few more tips to heed for Bike To Work Week: Map out a route, add a basket or a bag, and commute with a co-worker. Also, bike in work clothes if you aren’t planning on breaking any speed records.

Friday, May 18th is National Bike to Work Day, and it’s a well known fact that the best thing about biking to work is biking away from work. Friday afternoon is Chapel Hill’s third annual Spring Roll, the gigantic joyride away from work. Hundreds of cyclists on a mellow cruise. Meet at 5:30 for elbow rubbing, ride begins at precisely 6:47ish.

Muscle Powered Fact: Muscle Powered formed soon after the City hosted a public meeting at the Carson City Library to revise the City’s bicycle plan. Our founding members realized there was a good chance that a new bicycle plan would likely sit on a shelf and never be implemented. We’re fortunate that several individuals decided to take action. The first Muscle Powered meeting was held on June 2nd, 1998.

A big thanks to our founding members:
Anne Macquarie, Jim Crompton, Virginia Orcutt, Sue Newberry, Bruce Mackey, Tom Whitehead, Jean Wagner, Walt Wagner, Ed Skudlarek, Kelly Clark, and Penny Fairfield.

Commuter Tip: A clean drivetrain is a happy drivetrain. Keeping your drivetrain clean will reduce the wear on your chainrings, cogs and chain. Keeping your chain clean will also keep you from getting filthy when performing a roadside repair.

Be sure to decorate your bike!

May is National Bike Month and, as such, is replete with some-good-and-bikey fun (have you checked out what’s happening in the Triangle yet?).

There’s a loooooong list of cycling activities planned for next month, but if you want to ease into the action, consider taking part in the Durham Kidical Mass at Northgate Park Group Ride this Saturday, April 28th.

Durham’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission (BPAC) invites kids of all ages to come on over to Northgate Park for the ride. Registration opens at 10am, and the group will set out at 11am. In between there’ll be helmet and bike checks and some road safety basics. Please remember to bring your own bicycle and helmet. Bringing along an extra for sharing is always helpful.

After the helmet and bike check, the group will set out on a ride from Northgate Park up along the Ellerbe Creek Trail and pass where the Big Brontosaurus lives. Riders will get a chance to practice their riding skills alongside friends, family and neighbors in the safety provided by the Ellerbe Creek Trail and Greenway. Cyclists are encouraged to decorated their bikes, and there might just be a few fun surprises along the way.

Volunteers are welcome. Please email Mathew Palmer at palmer.mathew@gmail.com with interest or questions.

Spring is here, and May’s Bike Month celebration will soon be rolling into town. With this year’s high gas prices, many people are seriously considering transportation alternatives. If you’re new to bicycle commuting, Bike Month is the perfect time to network with other cyclists that can give you tips, ideas, and support for using the bicycle as transportation. If you’re a seasoned bicycle commuter, this is your chance to help others get on their bikes. The more bikes that are on the road, the more visible and safer we all are.

Last week I completed my first ever Fall Bike to Work Week. According to the Vancouver Area Cycling

Last week I completed my first ever Fall Bike to Work Week. According to the Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition’s (VACC) Commute Tracker, my four return trips between home and work (I only worked four days last week) totalled 73.446 km and avoided 14.807 kg CO2 emissions. Over the course of the week I learned that I don’t mind cycling in cool or rainy weather or in the dark, but I’m still not keen on cycling on days when there is a threat of icy conditions. I don’t think I’ll become a year-round cyclist after last week, but I definitely built up the confidence to extend my cycling season and expect it may lengthen further in the coming years.

Physalis Alkekengi in Vancouver

Here are my reflections on fall cycling gained from my participation in last week’s Bike to Work Week:

Make sure your bike is in good riding condition. Thanks to two VACC courses (one on fall and winter riding and the other on basic bicycle maintenance) I picked up some important tips for caring for my bike in cold and wet weather and learned how to look over my bike to ensure it’s in good working order. The Demystifying Your Bike (basic bicycle maintenance) course was particularly helpful in this regard since I learned that my bike needed some work as soon as possible; everyone enrolled in the course was directed to look at my bike to see very worn down brake pads! Immediately after the class I decided to invest in new brake pads, one good tune-up, and a new back fender (thanks Bike Doctor). The skills I picked up in the class (cleaning and oiling my bike, checking my brakes and gears and fixing a flat tire) will come in handy in the future now that my bike is back to being in like-new condition. Riding during Bike to Work Week was a dream after the tune-up.

Back Brake Pad Prior to Replacement

Be visible. Invest in bright lights and realize that their primary purpose is to let vehicles see you. It was very difficult to see some cyclists when I was riding in the dark. Be safe out there! I was pleased to learn that instead of issuing tickets to cyclists for having no bike lights last week the Vancouver Police Department worked with the VACC to distribute bike lights to cyclists. My friend Mike posted a very detailed comment about the importance of lights for fall and winter cycling on my initial Bike to Work Week post and it’s worth a read.

You don’t need fancy cycling clothing to ride to work at any time of the year. All you need is comfort and I observed that this varied for everyone riding last week. I saw cyclists in shorts, yoga pants, mini skirts with colourful tights and leg warmers, tall rubber boots, dress shirts and ties, full-on cycling gear, etc. Don’t let not having the “right” gear prevent you from cycling — just try out different attire to see what works best for you. I happen to like my warm cycling sweater and waterproof cycling coat because the pockets are in handy places and I love the venting built into my jacket, but I was nearly as comfortable on one of my rides just wearing a hoodie and jean jacket. Some accessories that I liked having with me last week (but are by no means a requirement for fall cycling) were my shoe covers on one particularly wet ride and a thin hat that fit nicely under my helmet for the cooler mornings. Gloves were also important, but I found my neoprene ones too warm and damp after longer rides and they weren’t very maneuverable. One of the VACC course instructors mentioned that some cyclists really like wool gloves so I might try a simple pair of these in the future.

Fall is a beautiful time of year in Metro Vancouver. While it’s important to steer clear of obstacles on the ground such as large piles of leaves that may hide potholes or other hazards, there is a lot to love about cycling here in the fall. The leaves are stunning at this time of year and it was a pleasure to be outside and up close with all the colour. When you ride on some of our bike routes, such as some spots along 10th Avenue, it’s magnificent to be out in the fresh air immediately underneath tall trees and a canopy of yellows, oranges and reds. Cycling and walking are good for us physically but I was reminded last week that these activities are also emotionally uplifting, particularly when we we’re fortunate to have sunny hours in our fall days.

A Beautiful Fall Day in Vancouver

I hope all of you had a fun and rewarding Bike to Work Week. Thanks to my friends who took up the challenge with me last week. If you want to meet some other Metro Vancouverites who participated in Bike to Work Week, head over to Vancouver Is Awesome to view the commuter profiles included in last week’s V.I.A. cycling posts.
