Wembley revenge on Bilic’s men earns trip to South Africa

The build-up to the game had been as much about avenging the infamous defeat to Slaven Bilic’s side on home soil which shattered hopes of qualifying for Euro 2008 as it had been about booking a spot in South Africa next summer.

With that in mind, England started like a team intent on revenge and their visitors could not cope with the pace and purpose as Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard scored two goals apiece, while Eduardo replied before Wayne Rooney hit a fifth.

The Three Lions came roaring out of the traps and in the eighth minute Josip Simunic hopelessly clobbered Aaron Lennon, starting in place of Shaun Wright-Phillips, inside the penalty area and Lampard made no mistake from the spot.

Gerrard then doubled Fabio Capello’s side’s lead 10 minutes later when the Liverpool captain meet an inch-perfect cross from the excellent Lennon to give Croatia goalkeeper Vedran Runje no chance.

Lampard added a third in the 59th minute when nodding in a Glen Johnson cross and Gerrard also grabbed a brace when getting his head to a looping pass from Rooney in the 66th minute.

Eduardo replied for Croatia in the 73rd minute after a bit of a scramble, but Rooney restored England’s four-goal cushion when grabbing a simple goal in the wake of a mistake from Runje with 13 minutes remaining.

Fabio Capello has offered Croatia boss Slaven Bilic a vote of thanks – for doing his team talk for him!

Outspoken Bilic has been winding up England all week ahead of tonight’s World Cup qualifier.

Bilic told SunSport that captain John Terry should look at his own club, Chelsea, before accusing Croatia and Arsenal striker Eduardo of being a diver.

And he claimed the Three Lions had lost their ‘Englishness’ suggesting they no longer possessed the fighting spirit which used to make them feared.

That was despite the fact Capello’s men thumped Croatia 4-1 in Zagreb last October. Capello does not usually take any notice of what the opposition say but on this occasion he has made an exception.

He exclaimed: “Thank you, Mr Bilic. No more. It is the best. I have no need to motivate my players after this.

“He prepared the game. He tried to provoke a reaction. It is fantastic assistance. Thank you. I’m very happy for this because I don’t need to motivate my players for the match. I will simply tell them to remember what Bilic said.”

Capello comprehensively dismissed Bilic’s claims that his team had lost its spirit. How, he wondered, could that possibly be with a 100 per cent qualifying record of seven wins out of seven.

The Italian said: “I like the English spirit and have seen it in a lot of games that we’ve played.

“It’s impossible to win without spirit. We suffered sometimes during first halves and played better second halves, and it would have been impossible to do that without spirit.”

Bilic masterminded a 3-2 win at Wembley for Croatia two years ago – a result which put England out of Euro 2008.

Ahead of tonight’s Wembley showdown, Capello added: “A team like England not qualifying for a Euro or World Cup is really a terrible thing for the players and the clubs.

“For that reason I think the motivation we will have is even more important. We have three finals to play.

“Croatia is the first of them and, after that, we play Ukraine and have the last game at home against Belarus.

“We have to win one of these three games to qualify, or draw some. The most important thing is to arrive first in the group and get to South Africa.

“I’ve not seen the video of the game against Croatia two years ago, absolutely not.

“I can’t understand why I should speak about it. I have to motivate the players for now.

“I always study the recent games that have been played, not what happened so far in the past.

“That is history, for the archives. I am preparing the next game, not the old games. Anyway, I think they forgot about this game the night they won 4-1 in Zagreb.”

Croatia come to Wembley wanting a win themselves to improve their qualifying chances but are without five key players including Spurs duo Luka Modric, who has a broken leg, and the suspended Vedran Corluka.

But Capello believes the Croats have a strong enough squad to cope.

He said: “Sometimes we’ve played without really important players.

“The group of the Croatians is always really good.

“I saw the game they played at the weekend against Belarus and they won playing well.”

Ironically Capello owes his £6million-a-year England role to the Croatia defeat which got Steve McClaren the sack.

He was brought in to restore pride and credibility and now stands on the brink of accomplishing the first part of his brief, qualifying for next summer’s World Cup finals.

From then on it’s all about getting to the actual final itself.

Capello added: “I think that is the dream of any manager.

“But my dream is first to go to South Africa – that was the goal when I came here. After, there will be another dream.

“People said that, with Croatia, it would be a very difficult group psychologically, so I wanted to give the players belief.

“I have big confidence in my team, really. I said this always.”

Usain Bolt will be the special guest at Wembley tonight.

Bilic backing for Eduardo

Slaven Bilic does not believe Eduardo will have a problem dealing with the England supporters in Wednesday’s World Cup qualifier.

Eduardo has been hit with a two-match UEFA Champions League ban after being found guilty of ‘deceiving the referee’ in Arsenal’s recent clash with Celtic.

He is expected to receive plenty of boos from the Wembley crowd when he lines up for Croatia against England but Bilic is not worried about the reaction affecting his performance.

“Eduardo is a complete man and a complete person,” said the Croatia manager.

“He’s great as a player, great as a person, great as a father.

“I can say that because I’ve known him since he was 17 – so I know. It can only motivate you more. He knows that he is 100 per cent, horizontally, vertically, diagonally, 100 per cent honest.”
‘Englishness’

Bilic was quoted as saying over the weekend that England had lost some of their ‘Englishness’ under Fabio Capello but he maintains that it was meant as a compliment.

“With those words, I praised Capello and the English team,” said the former West Ham defender.

“I didn’t say anything negative. I didn’t say that they’d lost Englishness.

“I said, in a positive way, that Mr Capello is one of the best managers in the world; they are more organised, more solid; they control games almost completely, and they don’t leave opponents five yards of space. They are playing differently now.

“They should be better at a World Cup – if they qualify, of course. They will still have six months to train together and will be together for three or four weeks, so they will be better and better.”

The infamous summer transfer window is now well and truly shut. UEFA have told everyone to shut up and make do until January now. But are all the Premier League clubs sufficiently stocked?

Now it’s Blackburn, Bolton and Burnley’s turn to be analysed.

Blackburn

After a turbulent season last time round in which they will have settled for survival, Rovers needed to strengthen in this window. The departures of Roque Santa Cruz and later Stephen Warnock added further to the need for new faces.

At £12million, the man dubbed as the ‘future of Croatian football’ by Slaven Bilic will need to settle in quickly. Nikola Kalinic had a good scoring record at Hadjuk Split, but like many other players will need time to adjust to the pace of the English game. Poor performances in his first two games- one in which he was booked for diving- means that looks unlikely.

It was a disappointing window for Rovers. A natural replacement for Warnock wasn’t found, so Allardyce will be forced to choose between playing the young Martin Olsson there or transferring one of his new signings like Pascal Chimbonda or Michel Salgado to the left flank. Another option could be moving Gael Givet from his preferred central berth.

Bolton

A team that are still lingering in the Premier League without making too much of an impact, Bolton boss Gary Megson was sure to add more likeminded players to his determined squad.

A string of tenacious yet lacklustre signings followed. Zat Knight, Sean Davis and Paul Robinson are very much ‘Bolton players’ that will give their all for the team. Knight’s physical presence will be handy at set pieces. But on deadline day, Gary Megson took arguably his first risk of the summer, drafting in Croatian hitman Ivan Klasnic on loan from French side Nantes.

A couple of years ago, Klasnic was hot property. Scoring goals aplenty for Werder Bremen, he was attracting interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs. But after trouble with his kidney, it was suggested that he could never play football again. He did return with Nantes, but his stay in France has not been a happy one. Finding the form of four or so years ago will not be an easy task, but if he achieves it, it could be enough to shove Bolton to safety.

Burnley

Arguably the weakest of the promoted sides, Burnley pride themselves on the hardworking and team orientated ethos of the club. Masses of ins and outs were never a likelihood, but the odd experienced head would have been welcomed at Turf Moor.

Summer signings Andre Bikey, Tyrone Mears and David Edgar all have some top league experience- albeit mainly forgettable memories. It’s hoped Steven Fletcher will take to the south of the border like a duck to water, and pitch in with goals in the same way he did at Hibernian. Joining him in the frontline is deadline day loanee David Nugent who will be hoping he can get a prolonged run of games and prove a point to his parent club Portsmouth.

All in all, Burnley will be hoping that adrenaline and effort will carry them through the season. They could get found out towards the back end of the season, like Hull last year, but they will be optimistic that safety has already been guaranteed.

El Barça ganó de cabeza (3 goles de cabeza) al Sporting.

Con Chygrynskiy ya de azulgrana -vio el partido en el palco-, y con un once plagado de teóricos suplentes, Guardiola quiso recibir al Sporting de Gijón con respeto y rehusó recibir un nuevo pasillo de los asturianos.

El Barça ofreció el quinto título del año a su afición antes de que Bojan, Busquets, Maxwell, Pedro… se unieran a los Valdés, Puyol, Piqué, Alves, Xavi, Keita e Ibra en un partido de resaca europea y que, por momentos, destiló aires de pretemporada.

Esta vez fue Bojan, con un gol de listo, quien rompió la muralla construida por Preciado. Un centro de Xavi medido a la cabeza de Keita lo peinó el malí -está en un gran momento el africano-, y el joven Krkic, haciendo gala de su olfato, remachó en plancha desde el segundo palo (1-0, 17′).

El gol, tempranero, espoleó a un Sporting que buscó el empate con desparpajo. Pero el Camp Nou no estaba para sorpresas. Ibrahimovic, que lo intentó toda la noche, deleitó a la grada con un recorte que dejó rotos dos rivales pero intentó resolver colocando el balón en un lugar imposible.

La primera parte transcurrió sin grandes ocasiones. Dominio azulgrana, arreones asturianos y dos jugadores por encima de la media; Bojan y Keita. El africano, portentoso en el juego aéreo, remató alto un centro de Alves (39′) y Bojan lo intentó de nuevo en una jugada personal por la izquierda que terminó con disparo cruzado fuera y ovación de la grada.

Era el preludio del segundo gol azulgrana. De nuevo Keita, de nuevo por alto, pescó un centro excelente de Alves para cabecear al fondo de la red visitante en un justo premio a su excelente trabajo (2-0, 41′).

IBRAHIMOVIC SE ESTRENÓ COMO GOLEADOR DEL BARÇA

La segunda parte siguió con el tono gris de la primera, sin grandes alardes, con dominio azulgrana y con poca fe de un Sporting que era y se sentía menor que el pentacampeón.

Maxwell se tuvo que retirar lesionado tras un mal gesto y Abidal le sustituyó para seguir martilleando por la izquierda. Preciado dio entrada a Bilic para buscar el milagro pero el delantero solo dispuso de un tiro que detuvo muy seguro Valdés.

El público del Camp Nou quería más y Pedro, el héroe de Mónaco, se sumó a la fiesta con un disparo desde la derecha que no encontró portería. Como tampoco Ibrahimovic, cada vez más ansioso, que no acertó a empalmar el rechace. De hecho, el delantero más peligroso del Barça seguía siendo Bojan que no dudaba en poner en apuros a Juan Pablo a cada balón que recibía.

Pero el canterano, primer goleador blaugrana de esta Liga, sufrió un encontronazo con un defensa y se tuvo que retirar lesionado, sustituido por Jeffren (79′).

Y de una mala noticia a una noticia para la historia. Después de intentarlo todo, Ibrahimovic aprovechó un nuevo centro de Alves desde la derecha para marcar de cabeza su primer gol como azulgrana (3-0, 81′). El sueco solo tuvo que estirarse con toda su envergadura para marcar a placer y acabar con la ansiedad.

Fue el broche de oro a un partido digno de un estreno liguero, un partido bien resuelto por el Barça que empieza como terminó la última Liga, con superioridad y certificando que el campéon sigue estando en forma, con un ariete, Ibrahimovic, que ya marca y con un engranaje que promete muchas tardes de gloria al Camp Nou en esta temporada que acaba de empezar.

“Srna passt perfekt zum FC Bayern”, so der 40-Jährige kroatische Nationaltrainer in einem Interview. Er bringt sowohl den Bayern Srna nahe als auch andersherum. Srna-Berater Damir Stimac geht noch einen Schritt weiter: “Die Zeit für einen Wechsel ist gekommen. Der Wechsel wäre für beide Sieten optimal, aber der ukrainische Uefa-Cup-Sieger verstand es auch in den vergangenen Jahren gut Srna durch unorthodoxe Maßnahmen in dem flächenmäßig zweitgrößten Land Europas zu halten. Ein Wechsel wird wohl wieder an der geforderten Ablöse in Höhe von 18 Millionen Euro scheitern. Wobei ich mich natürlich gerne eines besseren belehren lassen würde.

ATLÉTICO 3- 1 SPORTING

El conjunto de Abel volvió a mostrar las carencias que han acompañado a los rojiblancos a lo largo de toda la temporada. Nulo juego colectivo y grandes lagunas en defensa. Tan solo la delantera rindió al nivel esperado y sacó las castañas del fuego -otra vez-, ante un rival que mostró mejor cara, pero que nada pudo hacer ante la eficacia rojiblanca.

El ambiente era gélido. Apenas 25.000 espectadores en el Calderón, 3.000 venidos desde tierras asturianas. La derrota en el Sardinero escocía a los aficionados y, así se lo hicieron ver a la directiva, cuerpo técnico y jugadores desde el primer momento. En los prolegómenos se podía vivir la tensión. Medio centenar de aficionados se manifestaban a las puertas del estadio contra la familia Gil y contra Cerezo por su labor en estos años.

Sin embargo, el partido no sirvió para calmar los ánimos. Los rojiblancos intentaron controlar el esférico desde el primer momento pero a los pocos minutos se contagiaron del ambiente de la grada y empezaron a jugar “su” fútbol. El balón iba de un lado al otro sin detenerse en el medio del campo, ya que el Atlético no tiene jugadores que sepan jugar al fútbol. ¿La solución? Balones a la delantera. Primitivo a la par que eficaz.

Cualquier otro equipo hubiese puesto patas arriba el Calderón. Pero el Sporting no. El Sporting tiene más problemas que el Atlético. Su defensa es la de un patio de colegio,  el medio del campo tan solo aporta ganas y, a veces, ni eso, y la delantera no goza de un buen momento. No solo eso, sino que la mala suerte parece que les acompaña en las últimas jornadas.

Es el minuto 27 cuando Forlán golpea al balón desde fuera del área con la mala fortuna que el disparo toca en Neru y hace una parábola imposible de parar. En ese momento la afición, dormida hasta entonces, se volvió a acordar de la familia Gil y de su presidente.

Antes de que el Sporting pudiese reaccionar, una brillante acción del portugués Simao, en colaboración con Forlán, sirvió al Atlético para irse con dos goles de ventaja al descanso. Y la afición se volvió a girar al palco.

La segunda parte empezó trepidante. Un buen pase de Forlán -el mejor de los locales- hacia el Kun, dejó solo al argentino que batió a Pichi Cuellar en el mano a mano. Al minuto, el Sporting se rehízo y tras una jugada personal de Diego Castro, Mate Bilic llevó el cuero al fondo de las mallas.

A partir de ese momento los locales desaparecieron y el Sporting echó toda la carne en el asador. Los asturianos rondaron el gol en varias ocasiones pero, la mala fortuna en unos casos, y la falta de precisión en otros, impidieron a los de Preciado marcar otro gol.

Ante la pasividad de sus jugadores, el Calderón estalló. El momento cumbre se produjo con la lesión de Antonio López y la entrada de Mariano Pernía. La entrada del argentino fue la gota que colmó el vaso. La afición rojiblanca, harta del mal juego del equipo, la tomó con el lateral. Pero no fue el único, el resto del equipo jugó la segunda mitad acompañado por cánticos como: “¡Esta camiseta, no la merecéis!” o “¡Jugadores, mercenarios!”

Por suerte para la afición local, al final el Atleti consiguió los tres puntos –sin duda lo mejor de la noche- y está a tan solo cuatro puntos de la Champions. Mientras el Sporting, duerme en descenso y con la sensación de que se podía haber llevado algo más de la ribera del Manzanares.

As well as being fluent in four languages, possesing a law degree, devastating good looks and a succesful career in football as both a player and manager he is also a guitarist in a succesful Croatian band. Rawbau, for whom he plays rhythm guitar, recorded their nation’s official song, a punky Bouncing Souls inspired rocker, for Euro 2008.

If only Steve MacClaren had gotten England into the championships it would have been interesting to see the triple hair-lined Yorkshire weird-o attempt at moonlighting as a pop-star.

It should be noted that I am yet to track down anything relating to Christian Dailly’s long rumoured “Queens Of The Stone Age-esque” rock band Southern Playground.

Era el 21 de abril de 2008 y el Sevilla Atlético caía goleado en el Molinón ante un Sporting que olía a Primera. Manuel Redondo volvía a sentirse futbolista después de sobreponerse al calvario de la temida triada. Galeote vio que era el momento de volver a darle confianza, pues solo había podido disputar unos segundos en el partido anterior en casa. Desafortunadamente, en uno de esos casos en los que el destino parece tenérselo guardado a alguien, en su primera acción se lanza a por el balón y una mala caída le provoca rotura de tibia y peroné.

De eso hace ya casi ocho meses, pero Redondo sigue empeñado en ganarle la partida al destino. Este fin de semana vuelve a una convocatoria con el Sevilla Atlético. Será en Tarragona, donde el filial viaja para cumplir el expediente en su última salida de este 2008. Quizás sea pronto para que Redondo vuelva a los terrenos de juego, pero está claro que el central tiene ganas de ser alguien importante en esto del fútbol. Sólo por su tesón e insistencia ya lo merece.

La única pena es que todo este camino comenzó cuando el Sevilla Atlético se encaminaba hacia la élite, en el verano de 2007. Para Redondo todo empezará a finales de 2008, cuando competir en la categoría es casi ya una utopía para los de la camiseta franjirroja.

¡Enhorabuena, Lolo!

En el día después de la dolorosa derrota ante el Sporting de Gijón, la práctica totalidad de los medios de comunicación coinciden en lo injusto de la expulsión de Roversio.

Del mismo modo, esta unanimidad se repite a la hora de evaluar la decisión del penalti en sí. Hasta los medios locales sostienen que el defensa brasileño derribó a Bilic en el área pequeña, con lo que asumen que Medina Cantalejo acertó al señalar pena máxima. No obstante, en Blogsasuna no coincidimos en este aspecto con la mayoría de medios de comunicación, ya que lo único que se puede advertir en las imágenes es que el delantero croata cae después de forcejear con Roversio. Una jugada dudosa como mucho, pero que en la Liga ya se ha asumido como penalti claro. Ahora bien, todo esto viene de largo.

En la Liga española es costumbre que el árbitro corte la mitad de las jugadas de un encuentro. En defensa del juego técnico los colegiados castigan con falta la mayoría de lances del juego, pero este hecho no hace sino interrumpir constantemente el partido.

Así, mientras en otras ligas como la Premier League queda comprobado que la mayoría de las interrupciones son evitables, en la Liga se tiende a premiar el engaño y la picaresca de los jugadores.

Por un lado se dice que hay que castigar a los futbolistas que fingen ser objeto de falta, pero al final los que más se lanzan al césped son los que acaban ganando la partida.

Según esta filosofía futbolística, cualquier forcejeo es falta, con lo que la pugna por hacerse con la posición entre Roversio y Bilic es penalti de los claros. De este modo, todos los que defienden que la jugada es pena máxima mandan un claro aviso a navegantes: tírate porque lo más seguro es que el colegiado de turno te lo pite. El Lazarillo de Tormes en su máxima expresión.

En las demás ligas europeas, en cambio, el colegiado hubiera pasado por alto el forcejeo entre el brasileño y el croata, quien curiosamente se cayó cuando el balón ya había superado su posición.

Y mientras tanto la Premier League continúa ganando adeptos por su fútbol sin interrupciones. God save the queen.

CRÓNICA:

No tiene nombre lo que le está sucediendo a Osasuna en este inicio liguero. Parecía que Ziganda era el posesor del gafe, pero el banquillo rojillo emana un tufillo trágico que se le ha pegado de momento a José Antonio Camacho.

Es un cóctel de circunstancias que ya está llamando la atención de los mejores ‘barmans’ de Nueva York, resultado de la combinación de mala suerte, una buena dosis de palos y travesaños, y el ingrediente secreto: las decisiones arbitrales.

Ya puedes llamarlo estafa, robo, arbitrajes parciales, atraco a mano armada, tongo… Pero pasan las jornadas y siempre suena la misma canción. Un tema que te deja de cara de idiota y que te hace preguntar: ¿Somos los tontos de la clase?

Y la respuesta, mal que pese a nuestro herido orgullo, es afirmativa. Porque la mayor parte de las collejas del colegio llamado Primera División se las lleva Osasuna. Y que conste que no se trata de un análisis realizado en caliente, o la típica pataleta de colegio.

Especialmente desde la pasada temporada, los árbitros vienen perjudicando de forma flagrante a Osasuna. Es algo demostrable y que atañe al campo de la razón, no al de los sentimientos.

La entidad rojilla desde siempre se ha destacado por la templanza a la hora de criticar la actuación de los colegiados. Una actitud responsable y honrada que sin embargo se está volviendo en contra de los intereses de los rojillos.

Porque una cosa es adoptar una actitud barriobajera como la de otros equipos, que se dedican a presionar a los árbitros con declaraciones propias de la Camorra, pero otra es ser el ‘capacico de las hostias’ de la Liga.

Nadie puede reprocharle nada a Osasuna en el tema del trato con el estamento arbitral, tal y como reconocieron éstos mismos en verano. La labor de los árbitros es muy complicada, pero el hecho de que sus errores caigan el 90 por ciento de las ocasiones a favor del rival de Osasuna ya produce un gran escozor.

MEDINA CANTALEJO: ROJA Y EXPULSIÓN

Todo esto viene a raíz de una jugada en concreto. El marcador indicaba empate a uno, y el Sporting se disponía a lanzar la enésima falta infantil cometida por Osasuna. Entonces, Medina Cantalejo, de amplia trayectoria internacional, señaló penalti cuando el balón se perdía por el fondo y todos los jugadores regresaban a sus posiciones.

En la repetición se aprecia que Roversio y Bilic, solos delante de la meta de Ricardo, pugnan por la posición. El jugador sportinguista se deja caer cuando nota contacto, pero entonces se puede comprobar que el central brasileño tiene los brazos levantados, descartando cualquier posible agarrón.

Pero Medina Cantalejo señala penalti y expulsión, para sorpresa de los futbolistas rojillos. Otra vez más se premia a los tramposos, al Lazarillo de Tormes de turno, dejando al conjunto navarro con un penalti en contra y con un jugador menos durante más de 50 minutos.

De inicio, se pudo ver a un Osasuna prácticamente idéntico al de Ziganda, pero con la gran diferencia de contar con dos puntas en ataque. Un factor que facilita que uno de los delanteros vaya a luchar un balón bombeado mientras que el otro trata de aprovechar la prolongación del primero.

No obstante, al poco de empezar, Ricardo se comió un balón colgado al área que remató a placer Carmelo (m.10). Todo un regalo.

El equipo de José Antonio Camacho dominaba el ritmo del partido, pero caía constantemente en el mismo error, provocando faltas infantiles al borde del área. El único modo mediante el que el Sporting llegaba con peligro a la meta rival.

Pero pocos minutos después del tanto del jugador canario, Oier Sanjurjo protagonizó desde la banda izquierda una excelente internada hacia la media luna del área, que culminó con un pase entre líneas que dejó solo a Ezquerro. Y el riojano no perdonó, batiendo a Cuéllar con un tiro raso producto de su sangre fría.

A partir de ahí, el partido se durmió. La defensa de Osasuna seguía igual de segura que en pasadas jornadas, gracias en parte a la escasa pólvora mostrada por los asturianos arriba.

En ese momento, Ezquerro tuvo la portunidad del partido, pero su vaselina salió ligeramente desviada. Pero el fútbol es muy cruel, e instantes después, en el minuto 40, Medina Cantalejo tomó la decisión que a la postre decidió el encuentro.

OSASUNA ACORRALA AL SPORTING CON DIEZ

En la reanudación, Camacho dio entrada a Josetxo y Masoud por Portillo y Juanfran. El técnico murciano se precipitó con la salida del de Crevillente, uno de los mejores hasta sus sustitución.

Masoud se mostró tal y como es en la segunda mitad, y a buen seguro que Camacho le habrá dado un par de collejas en el vestuario.

En los resúmenes del encuentro de esta tarde el iraní protagonizará varias de las mejores jugadas, pero aún le queda mucho por aprender, ya que no es normal que pierda uno de cada diez balones que recibe. Camacho tiene bastante trabajo por delante para dar forma al diamante persa.

Osasuna intentaba perforar la defensa asturiana de todos modos, pero el inico de la segunda parte fue más bien infructuoso para los navarros. Se veía más cerca el 3-1 que el 2-2 debido a la velocidad de los extremos del Sporting, pero el cuadro local no llegó a crear peligro.

Azpilicueta se erigió en el protagonista de su equipo, ejerciendo de auténtico carrilero. El joven pamplonica está en un gran estado de forma, y tan pronto se le veía en tareas defensivas como desbordando en ataque.

Sola fue la referencia en la parcela ofensiva, y el de Cascante se partió la cara con los defensas gijonenses. El encuentro se esfumaba entre las múltiples interrupciones locales, y en el minuto 55 el delantero navarro pudo haber igualado la contienda, pero su cabezazo dio en el travesaño.

De ahí al final, Osasuna acorraló al equipo de Preciado, pero ni la salida de Dady ni la calidad a balón parado de Masoud evitó la tercera derrota de Osasuna en Liga.

Die kroatische Fußball Nationalelf befindet sich derzeit in Čatež im Trainingslager um sich auf das kommende WM-Qualifikationsspiel gegen die Nationalmannschaft der Ukraine vorzubereiten.  Mit dabei ist auch der Mittelfeld Star Luka Modrić, der gestern verletzungsbedingt das Training ausfallen ließ. Der Stürmer Ivica Olić vom Hamburger SV wird erst morgen am Training mit der Mannschaft teilnehmen.

Der kroatische Nationaltrainer Slaven Bilić mit seinem Treinerstab ist sehr zuversichtlich, was den Spielverlauf gegen die Ukraine betrifft. Er kennt die Stärken seines Teams und sich sicher, dass diese trotz des Drucks eine sehr gute Partie abliefern werden.

Es werden zunächst die schwächen aus dem Spiel gegen England anaylisiert werden und anschließend im Training geübt, so der Coach auf der Pressekonferenz gegenüber der kroatischen Presse. Weiterhin fügte er hinzu, dass sein Team jede Mannschaft bezwingen kann und im kommenden Spiel bei guter Leistung 3 Punkte holen wird.

Well, This is a rare foray into the subject of sport, but I think the England teams performance in Zagreb tonight warrants it! We’re now the first team to beat the Croats at home in 14 years… thats since their inception of their nation, which makes it even more joyful! A great night of taking revenge for the pain suffered at the hands of Slavan Bilic’s side during the Euro 2008 qualifying campaign almost makes up for England being so poor for the last couple of years (at least).

Theo Walcott was undoubtedly the Man of the Match with his hat-trick of goals which he took with aplomb. Always pacy and managing to twist the left back in circles, he staked his claim for a regular spot, probably bringing an end to David Beckham’s England career. Wayne Rooney also had a good game, dominating the Croatian half, along with Lampard who looked the most confident wearing an England shirt he’s been for years now. He still has a way to go to reproduce his Chelsea form for his country, but this will quieten his detractors for a while. The only player on the pitch who looked slightly dodgy was David James, but that’s to be expected, he’s either spot on and playing a blinder, or completely wobbly.

England fans can enjoy this result for now, but shouldn’t get too carried away… it was only a few years a go when a certain Swede named Sven was dubbed the Messiah after the team gave Germany a 5-1 thrashing in Germany no less, and look how that turned out!

Capello managed to turn around a team in Real Madrid that was packed full of over over-hyped, dysfunctional stars into a solid working unit. He has the passion, the record, the confidence and the tactical nouse to take England to South Africa 2010. If he can’t do it, I really don’t think anyone can.

Second Thought – Hats off to the Croatia fans that stuck around in the stadium and sang for their team until the bitter end. Not something I’d imagine seeing from England fans!

Remember the good old days? England could send a football team to almost anywhere and come back usually with a victory after a gentle stroll. How do you think that we will deal with a team that were ranked 122nd in the world in 1993 and who lost to England 4-2 as recently as 2004?

That’s right we are second favourites with the bookmakers. How can this be? England teams are routinely full of players from the top 4 of the Premiership. Players with lots of Championship League experience. Players whose transfer fees would be in the high millions. Can you name a Croat in tonights team who has played in the CL knockout stages never mind the final?

This is not to denigrate the Croatians, far from it. They are  deservedley at number 5 in the FIFA world rankings, 10 places ahead of England. This from a country of 4.5 million inhabitants. Where are we going wrong? Where are they going right?

Jamie Carragher’s claims last week that some England players care more about playing for their clubs than their country struck a nerve. With a rising number of early retirements from International football and supporter apathy toward the national team growing by the game, the scouse totem might, for once, to have it about right.

Carragher’s comments last season that England attracted more support from the south than the north were under-reported (possibly because he wasn’t then trying to sell his autobiography) but those supporters of the likes of United and Liverpool knew what he meant. Both these clubs (and the cities they represent) regard themselves as seperate in heart and mind from the rest of the country.

Both cities exist on an altogether higher plane than any other city in the UK with the exception of some of the more clued-up parts of London. Manchester and Liverpool are cultural capitals in a way that places like Reading and Watford (or even Edinburgh and Cardiff) could never hope to be. Regular exposure to Europe has engendered an easy way with foreign languages among their fans, promoting a curiosity about foreign culture and an appreciation for the joys of travel not appreciated in the rest of the country. When Mancs and scousers travel abroad they know the score and it doesn’t include belting out ‘No Surrender’ in the middle of a French cafe. The fame of the two clubs has also lured foreigners to visit the two cities, revel in the nightlife and sample an England a million miles away from the Trafalgar Square pigeon feeding cockernee stereotype. 

England’s support, by contrast, tends to come from the less successful clubs – from supporters who, by and large, don’t get to travel abroad too often. Unaware of the rules and willing to play up to the British Bulldog image they fall in with the NF sympathisers. England’s support may have changed in the last decade or so but not rapidly enough to rid us completely of the idiots.

Yet it is results on the pitch that will define how England are regarded. Slaven Bilic’s comments regarding the England team recently were spot on – they have shown little or no improvement since the sides met last year, if anything England have gone backwards under Capello.

An accurate barometer of how the team are regarded will come tomorrow when Setanta’s viewing figures are released. This game is only available via satellite only and at a cost of £10 a month - a decent amount in tight times. Having shelled out an incredible £5 million to televise this tie, Setanta clearly expect a big boost in subscriptions but it’s a hell of a gamble, especially when there is so little confidence and enthusiasm for the team for the reason stated above. Should England fail, and the viewing figures hit an all-time low, then the future of International football will be in serious doubt in this country.

Es ist sicherlich eines der wichtigsten Spiele die die kroatische Nationalmannschaft morgen gegen England zu bestreiten hat, doch die Vorzeichen sind sehr positiv. Kroatien hat in der vergangenen EM Qualifikation die Engländer zweimal deutlich geschlagen und wird morgen mit der richtigen Vorbereitung und dem nötigen Respekt zum Spiel antreten.

Nach dem erfolgreichen abschneiden der kroatischen Fußball Nationalmannschaft auf der Euro2008 in Österreich und der Schweiz steht nun das nächste Qualifikationsziel zur WM 2010 in Südafrika auf dem Programm. Heute Abend wird das Team um den Cheftrainer Slaven Bilić seine erste Prüfung in der Qualifikation gegen Kasachstan absolvieren.

Kasachstan steht zwar auf Nr. 125 der Fifa Weltrangliste und Kroatien ist der Favorit, doch das Team dar den Gegner absolut nicht unterschätzen. Es spricht alles für einen Sieg der kroatischen “Vatreni”, aber nur dann wenn jeder Spieler seine Bestleistung gibt.
