Newcomer Ke$ha takes the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Tik Tok”. She beats out Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ “Empire State of Mind”, which had 5 weeks at the top.

I’m sure many of you have heard this song before. It has become somewhat of a contemporary Christmas classic. The song was written by Walter Afanasieff and Carey herself. It was recorded for her 1994 Christmas album entitled Merry Christmas, which has went on to become 5x platinum by the RIAA. Since a commercial single was not released for the song in 1994, it did not chart on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1994 but did become a Top 20 hit on the Billboard Radio Airplay chart. It reached great success on international charts. In 2000, the song entered the Billboard Hot 100 after Billboard revised it’s rule to make it possible for singles. to chart without a commercial release. In 2005, the song rapidly became a Number 1 hit on the Hot 100 Recurrents chart for Billboard; and from 2005 onward it has since always peaked at the position at the end of each year.

My local paper had an article hidden in its ‘World News’ section about an initiative by the Boston Public Health Commission that I had to find out more about. The Sound Relationships Nutrition Label is used to assess how the lyrics of popular songs portray relationships. Developed by teenagers, the program is described like this;

“The tool, patterned after common food nutritional labels, invites consumers to become song lyric nutritionists by helping them identify relationship ingredients that make up a song. Using printed song lyrics as a guide, users can tally the number of healthy relationship themes, such as respect, equality, and trust, which are present in the song. And, like fattening calories, unhealthy relationship themes – possession, disrespect, and manipulation – are also counted. The number of times these themes are mentioned also factor into to the song’s total nutritional value.”

The tool has been used to rank the 10 healthiest and unhealthiest songs current in the Billboard Hot 100;

I have written before about being the elder sister of a teenage girl and how difficult it is to provide a balance to the frankly anti-feminist message that popular culture gives these young women. It is really wonderful to see the effect of popular culture being recognised by both officials and teens, and the contributions of those giving a positive message being recognised. Tonight, Miley Cyrus will be taking the stage at Conseco Fieldhouse for the second time.  Miley’s first visit to Indianapolis was about two years ago.  In December 2007, Miley Cyrus headlined a nearly sold-out show with supporting acts, the Jonas Brothers and her alter ego, Hannah Montana.

This time around, Metro Station, featuring Miley’s older brother, Trace Cyrus, will support Miley on her headlining tour, sans Hannah Montana.  Miley’s separation from Hannah Montana didn’t hurt her sales in the least.  Right now, 16-year-old Miley Cyrus’s song, Party in the USA is #6 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the show tonight is completely sold out.

Reviewers of the tour thus far have been very impressed with this particular 16 year old girl.  If you are in attendance, be prepared for multiple outfit changes, some more revealing than others; Miley being suspended in midair more than once; a duet with Trace Cyrus; and catchy songs that many already know.

If you don’t already have tickets, you’ll have to catch Miley on tour the next time she’s in town.  This is a paperless tour, to eliminate scalpers.  The person who purchased the tickets must present the credit card used to purchase the tickets and a photo ID.
