There’s something about a pool table. Not the kind that you would typically find in a bar, but the ones that exude class with their high-quality construction and a professional slate playing surface. They add a certain “je ne sais quoi” to an event, don’t you think? Well, what could be more impressive than having an elegant table in the center of your next event? How about one that displays an art masterpiece?

The Mona Lisa Masterpiece Pool Table

Imagine walking into your next corporate function or gala and seeing several chic pool tables for guests to either use or simply stand by and admire. That’s what Eric Brashear, president and founder of AGR, envisioned when creating the Masterpiece Pool Table Collection for an American Heart Association fundraiser three years ago. It was an art themed, white tie event, with the tables serving as the piece de resistance.

The Son of Man Masterpiece Pool Table created for The HeART of Gold Gala

Event professionals have their choice of several works including All Night Café, Café at Night, The Mona Lisa and The Son of Man.

The creativity doesn’t stop there, though. Feeling sporty? Choose a table with a basketball court or football field on the felt. If your event is ultra-hip or safari themed, go with the leopard or zebra print. Sammy Davis Jr. calling? Stick with the Rat Pack table.

A sample of our many Masterpiece Pool Tables

The possibilities are endless, with many clients choosing to go in a direction that spotlights a particular company or organization by featuring their own logo or graphic on the felt, yet another brilliant way to draw attention to your business’ name.

You talked together about exes and siblings, friends and parents; the choices you made that got you

You talked together about exes and siblings, friends and parents; the choices you made that got you where you are today. You talked about the ones you were with while you were with each other and decided together not to tell them you were. You realized that love had nothing to do with it and you danced together on your toes to Billie Holiday and you sang your hearts out until you were horizontal and then it was all kisses. You tasted of each other’s breath until it mingled and became the breath of one. The one you still remember the day after in a wisp of fallen hair or on the collar of your shirt. The sweet smell that is not quite either of you and yet you pick out certain fragrances like a fine wine. You tasted each one and then you cleansed your mutual pallet with a bit of conversation. You talked with each other; making an offering of yourself – thin and fragile like the communion wafer and with all the same implications. First an exhale of the day’s events then empathy arrives like a deep breath or a good sporting commentary filling the lungs to capacity. The moaning begins slowly with a soft, long caress, a bit of history; builds to a climax as you reveal your secrets to each other and invent new philosophies that aren’t new, but neither is this and finally subsides like an unaccepted paradigm; bodies quivering with desire and glistening with passion until all you can do is hold each other tight and sleep.

This shit’s all sterile you know. We wished for baby soft and what we got was nothing less than spiritual man. It was a lucky strike. It was real and true and it was all love, like true magenta. It was blue skies and cyan moon clouds just hovering, passing like when the sky just opens up and lets you have a peek. Eight ball in the corner pocket baby, yeah. And when I feel yellow he’s all red. He’s mean and he’s mine. We catch it. We catch it together. We beat it. We scratch it. We watch each other into submission. It’s the ultimate. It’s a fighting game cock until the black comes and the cone rises and the hen crows at daybreak. It’s primary colors, simplicity aggravated. Complexity unraveled like the rope that swung from the old apple tree where ripe fruit fell to the ground and we to our knees. The rope that swings gold and silver, silver and gold svelte around her pretty little neck. A portrait of water, blood and ink it was. The sweetest kiss is a long goodbye. Hey mister, can you spare a spare? Her ass was soft and fleshy and impenetrable, like a heart.

Mary Moon…she’s a vegetarian, Mary Moon, Mary Moon…

Well, I certainly could be after tasting the famous Veggie Burger at Glover Park’s Breadsoda. Usually Veggie Burgers come on a flat, pressed, previously-frozen disk of unidentifiable vegetable…stuff.

Not here. Breadsoda uses a mixture of coarsely-chopped mushrooms, vegetable protein and spices, loosely packed and hand-formed for a delightful full-bodied texture, beating some of the best gourmet meat burgers I’ve ever had.

With lettuce, tomato, and a top-secret sauce on ciabatta bread, I was close to converting. It also comes with a deli pickle, and your choice of chips, potato salad, cole slaw or fruit salad. I opted for the latter–fresh watermelon, strawberries, grapes and cantaloupe.

Breadsoda is a deli too, as well as a pool hall. The narrow space holds three pool tables, shuffleboard, and a long, sleek bar. They also have Nintendo Wii and a couple of large, flat-screen TV’s.

I don’t play billiards. I was more interested in the deviled eggs in the deli case.

Outside is a sunken patio with outdoor seating in warmer months. During the winter, Breadsoda provides patio heaters to keep patrons nice and toasty.

This is a sleek neighborhood bar with friendly service, excellent drinks, great food at fair prices. And entertainment to boot. What more could you ask for?

Reprinted from: billiardsforum

Home pool rooms are often the room of choice for entertaining guests, and with the proper decor, one can ensure that everyone including the non-billiard playing guests will enjoy themselves. One of the most important parts of home pool room decor is that it should provide an atmosphere of relaxation and fun. Home pool room decor elements include furnishing, lighting, layout, color schemes, and decoration. Determining the type of home pool room decor that will bring the most enjoyment is up to the individual home owners, but a few recommendations can be given to get one started.

The “must haves” for any home pool room decor are the pool table and the cue rack. There are many pool table designs to suit everyone’s taste. Pool tables can be made out of high end wood that is stained and custom detailed. There are also multiple use pool tables that can be converted into ping-pong tables. Cue stick racks are available as wall mount units, or as buckets. Generally, buckets tend to damage cues, and are not used nearly as much as traditional wall mount cue racks. Lighting is an extremely important factor in creating a home pool room decor, because if you can’t see well you won’t be able to play well. Lamps can be purchased that are similar to those seen in many commercial locations with pool tables. The lamp is placed directly above the table and is big enough to provide light to every inch of the pool table. Lighting for home pool room decor shouldn’t be difficult to find, just keep in mind that you want to see what ball you are trying to hit and you want a soothing atmosphere. Being able to have separate overhead lights and pool table lights will allow you to adjust to the preferred lighting.

Many individuals enjoy having a theme to their home pool room decor. Some common themes are billiard balls, beer decor, and poker decor. However, there is no reason the theme could not be anything you wanted it to be. Many novelty manufacturers produce home pool room decor using many themes and most thematic items can be modified to fit well into a pool room. Thematic home pool room decor can consist of anything including wall hangings, coasters, stools or even the felt on the pool table.

A bar with stools is a common furnishing for home pool room decor. The bar can be stocked with alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages and can be an inviting place for your friends to come and hang out. Another option for the home pool room decor is an entertainment center with oversize couches and chairs. Some individuals have gone as far as installing a mini-theater in their home pool room.

Whether you decide to purchase a custom designed pool table and install a plush theater system or you purchase the inexpensive multi-use pool table and have a few stools, the main point of a pool room is to have a place to enjoy, escape to, and relax in.

So, still unemployed. Not for lack of trying, though — I’ve canvased the town restaurant

So, still unemployed. Not for lack of trying, though — I’ve canvased the town restaurants and bars with my resume, so the hope is that something will open up before money runs out. Amy got a job at a photo company called Elevation Imaging, so she’ll be taking pictures of riders on the mountain this winter. A free season pass comes with the deal, so that’s a killer gig to be in on. Hope the job itself doesn’t suck. :S

But hey, a job is a job — especially in this town. I’m still on the lookout, hoping the dice will fall in my favor one of these times. Speaking of dice, they do this thing out here at bars where people enter to win an ongoing lottery that’s overseen by random local bar staffs. Bars that hold these kinds of lotteries charge a dollar to roll 5 dice, the object of which is to get a roll where each one lands on the same number. You’re only allowed one roll a day, unless you roll 3 or 4 of a kind, in which case you can *pay* another dollar to roll again. The bar I was at had an over $2000 dollar pot going, so maybe I should kick the job search to the curb and learn to rig dice games! At this rate, I’m not totally sure which would pay off sooner.

Changing the subject, last night Amy and I went to a movie premiere out here: Magic Moments, by .. no idea who, a local film crew. The event organization was more or less total shit, compounded by the fact that the most idiotic girl was in charge of the on-screen raffle ticket winner typing. They had a projector playing the desktop of a computer and the girl controlling it was typing the numbers as they were drawn in Word or something. Anyways, she kept writing random messages about people around the room, and basically every third word was misspelled, which might annoy me more than most people, but I think pretty much everyone was sick of that shit. The movie itself was awesome though. Really awesome.

Afterward we went across town to a pub and played some pool.

Today (that is, just a few hours ago) we went on a walk around town — what else do people with no money do? I took a few photos of some icicles hanging off of some trees. It was a weird sight, because there weren’t any similar icicles around on other trees. From what we deduced, they were formed when melting snow on the roof dripped off and cool rapidly in the air, so when it hit the tree it was ready to freeze again. I suppose I should mention it’s like 14 degrees outside (at least in the shade).

That’s all, hope to have better news soon.

The WA Hall of Champions is a very prestigious place to be, as you must have excelled in your chosen

The WA Hall of Champions is a very prestigious place to be, as you must have excelled in your chosen sport.

The Hall of Champions was originally put forward by the Sportwriters Association of WA in 1983. The criteria to be accepted into the Hall are as follows: Outstanding sporting achievement at the highest level, the athlete must be accepted as a product of the WA sporting system or have established their reputation while resident in WA. The athlete must also have retired from the highest level of competition for five years.

The current members of the selection committee are: Mr David Hatt (Chairman), Mr Ken Casellas, Mrs Liz Chetkovich, Mr Alan East, Mr Ray Wilson, Mr Glenn Mitchell and Ms Pam O’Connell.

We were privileged to witness on Friday night the latest three inductees, Cyclist Darryn Hill, Golfer Maxine Bishop and Australian Rules Footballer Sammy Clarke.

On the night we were given a run down on the achievements of these athletes that warranted their elevation to the Hall of Champions, and those of Darryn Hill and Maxine Bishop appeared thoroughly deserved. Hill having been the 1995 World Sprint Champion, having also won silver in 1994, and bronze in 1996 and 1997. He also won bronze as part of the team sprint combination at the Sydney Olympics and won another World title in 1996.

Ms Bishop was the first Western Australian golfer male or female to win an Australian amateur championship, in 1951. And was the first to win an overseas tournament, the New Zealand Open also in 1951. She was state women’s champion 11 times and won the Victorian title three times, the only three times she entered.

Then came the induction of Sammy Clarke, and we have to say that this one just did not have the same feeling of merit. He won the Sandover medal in 1933 in his first season of Australian Rules football for Claremont-Cottesloe. He won it again the following year, and represented WA 8 times. All impressive, but does it really warrant induction into the Hall of Champions? We cannot believe that there are not people from other sports with more impressive credentials.

Louise Sauvage is one to spring to mind who won 9 Paralympic gold medals and three silver in four Paralympic appearances. She also won gold in the 800m demonstration event at the Olympic games in Atlanta(96) and Sydney (00). She also won the Boston, Los Angeles, Berlin and Honolulu Marathons. She was voted Australian Paralympian of the Year in 1994, 1996, 1997 and 1998 has been awarded numerous other awards including the 1998 Young Australian of the Year in a sports category, the 1999 Australian Female Athlete of the Year, and also an Order of Australia Medal. Yet she is overlooked for the Hall of Champions?

Louise is an exceptional example, but if you are going to honour the likes of Sammy Clarke then you must compare his achievement with others in other sports. In state football, Theo Papp won, what is now the McInerney Ford Gold Medal four times in 1964, ’67, ’68 and ’70. The only man to have done so. Norrie Sutton won the same award twice, in 1982 and fourteen years later in 1996. Both also represented Western Australia.

If we look at Rugby Union, I have been unable to obtain a list of the PG Hampshire Award winners, however surely John Cecil `Jock’ Steggall deserves to be in the Hall of Champions. “Jock” was born in Geraldton in 1909, the son of a watchmaker and played 10 tests for Australia between 1931-33 at fullback. He sadly passed away in 1985. Although born in Geraldton he was schooled in Toowoomba and spent time in Brisbane before his Wallaby call up. as in those days the only chance you hade of a call up was if you came from Queensland or new South Wales. Now according to the criteria he may well be excluded even though he is in fact a product of Western Australia, and someone that Rugby in WA recognises as a Western Australian. Yet because he headed over East to further his aspirations at a time when WA was not on the Rugby map he is excluded. Is this right?

Another example from rugby is NZ born Bob Thompson who was picked to play for Australia whilst playing for Wests in 1971. Probably the first player to picked to represent Australia while playing in Western Australia, in the days before the Western Force, and recognition that Western Australia could match the east coast.

There are bound to be others in other sports but hopefully the point is proven.

Now the reason that “Not The Footy Show” was launched in September 2006 was because we felt that there were athletes and sports that deserved recognition that were being overlooked by a media that seems obsessed with Australian Rules. It would appear that the most prestigious awards in the state have also been hijacked, as without wanting to offend Mr Clarke’s family, his place in the Hall of Champions is premature when there are in other sports others who appear certainly equally if not more worthy.

We have gone through the past Inductees to see if there is a fair representation of the athletes that Western Australia has produced, and we will let you be the judge, but there does appear to be a very strong bias to what were traditionally the “Australian” sports, Australian Rules in winter, and cricket in summer.

The following sports have the following number of athletes in the Hall of Champions (sports such as Hockey include male and female athletes) :
Australian Rules – 23
Hockey – 21
Cricket – 13*
Athletics – 9
Swimming – 9
Netball – 4
Water Polo – 3
Harness Racing – 3
Horse Racing – 3
Tennis – 3*
Squash – 2
Surf Lifesaving – 2
Golf – 2
Billiards – 2
Lacrosse – 2
Surf Riding – 2
Cycling – 2
Bowls – 1
Speedway – 1
Basketball – 1
Yachting – 1
Association Football – 1
*Ernest Parker was inducted for both Tennis and Cricket.

There would appear to be an imbalance. After all this is not even an international sport. Hockey is an Olympic sport and deserves to be where it is, but there are many other athletes and sports that are not being given the recognition that they deserve, and this needs to be righted. It seems a little strange that some Western Australian athletes are in their chosen sport’s national Hall of Fame before their home state acknowledges them.

There would also appear to be an imbalance on the selection committee with Messrs, Casellas, Mitchell, East and Wilson all having strong Australian Rules ties, or are we being unfair?

One thing that these judges must be careful of is devaluing the honour of the Hall of Champions by pushing an agenda for their favoured sport. It would be a very sad day if that were to happen.

By: Chasse Rehwinkel G-Cue Billiards is conveniently located—I guess—in the West Loop, wedged betwee

By: Chasse Rehwinkel

G-Cue Billiards is conveniently located—I guess—in the West Loop, wedged between the major lines of Randolph and Lake on Morgan Street, and in the shadow of the Fulton Market Cold Storage building.

…Which means the top rated pool hall resides in a neighborhood that contains about three times as many meat markets and delicatessens as most neighborhoods, so if you’re hungry, and a ravenous carnivore, you can put a check mark in the plus column already for G-Cue.

Sorry Nicholas, Columbus discovered the Americas so I'll purchase my meats from him

What this really means is that G-Cue Billiards is located in a nice enough, but not too busy neighborhood, perfect for a laid back pool hall catering to the novice player.

I decided to make my trip to Citysearch’s three time top-rated pool hall in Chicago at the not traditionally busy time of 4 p.m. on a Thursday—because if you can attract players on a Thursday afternoon, I’m willing to entertain the possibility of your top-rated status—and immediately upon my arrival I met co-owner Penny Kokkalias while she was sneaking a quick cigarette break outside G-Cue’s nondescript front doors.

After a brief conversation about Illinois public smoking laws, Penny—I’m going with her first name for obvious reasons—led me inside and I found that for how unimpressive G-Cue might be on the outside it is, conversely, that impressive once you walk in.

There's a neon "Open" sign, I guess that's a start

26 tables spread across two floors, a fully stocked bar and kitchen, well ventilated playing space, solid lighting and plenty of distance between tables; G-Cue is certainly not like that stereotypical shady pool setup placed in the back of a bar I’ve come to expect.

“What I wanted to do with this place is create a friendly pool hall that you could bring your mom to,” stated Penny. “Most pool halls aren’t very female friendly so I thought there was a need for a clean, comfortable billiards room.”

This idea might partially steam from Penny’s own history with the game.

She told me her brother is actually a professional player, but when they were young—Penny was ten and her brother nine—Penny was able to best him often.

However, pool halls traditionally have never been seen as female hang-outs and while her brother was able to go with their farther to the billiards clubs, and in turn got the chance to hone his skills, Penny was left behind.

Down to its definitely not aggressive décor and spotless bathrooms—seriously impeccable bathrooms in this pool hall, I know it’s crazy—G-Cue is everything the traditional pool hall isn’t.

Oh my god I can see the walls! Unreal!

As for the private party room on the top floor, G-Cue offers 13 tables, a bar and dance space for those special moments in life that demand pool.

And when I say “special moments” I mean bridal showers, birthdays and even a wedding reception, which is being scheduled for later this year—I know, it’s more surprising than the clean bathrooms thing.

Speaking of parties, a group of 20 to 25 financial specialists actually reserved four tables for 4 p.m. on Thursday. And although I can’t say this meant the place was booming, it was still pretty impressive to see that large of the group on a weekday afternoon, a sight that tells me the friendly atmosphere is attractive to many who just want a friendly outing.

So lets get down to the nitty gritty.

One table costs $14 per hour—whether you have two people or four sharing one table the price is the same, technically that also applies to one person on one table to but Penny assured me they’re likely to work out some lesser price in that case—it costs $20 for the buffet and it is $35 per person for the private parties, which include the room, play and food.

Overall, I found that G-Cue is the epitome of clean pool; it’s certainly not intimidating to just drop in and seems like a perfect place for a cooperate get-together—I’m still not sure about a wedding reception, but that’s your call.

As for you hustlers out there, G-Cue is not for you.

While a club built to attract novice players might seem extremely enticing for high level rounders, Penny made it clear to me that G-Cue doesn’t tolerate high stakes play or as she put it, “I’m not stupid. If I see any money we’ll just kick you out.

Various people not being hustled in a pool hall, a rare sight

However, if you would like to get better so you can hustle elsewhere noted billiards author Larry Schwartz does offer lessons.

Ultimately though, does G-Cue deserve its high acclaim? I think so. It might not be a gambler’s idea of a top class pool hall, but G-Cue makes up for its lack of rounder respect by being a welcome place for players just to have fun.

And afterall, pool is a game and people occasionally like to have fun playing games.

The snooker season got off to a great start this year with the Ranchmen’s Club in Calgary hosting the International Snooker League (ISL) “mini-tournament” from October 15-18. This is a smaller version of the spring tournament that the TCC hosted last May. Almost thirty players attended from across Canada and New York. We were well represented
with seven TCC members attending (Messrs. Garvey, MacKenzie, McDonald, Ranger, Rodenbush, Wormworth, and yours truly). Congratulations to Rick Mackenzie, who took home two trophies – one for being part of the winning doubles tournament team and the second for coming in second in the scratch singles tournament – and to Tom Garvey, who was part of the second place team in the doubles tournament.

Two no-handicap tournaments are scheduled in November – the doubles tournament on November 5, and the singles tournament on November 26. Sign up sheets are in the billiards room – competitors and spectators are both welcome. The singles tournament is the 2009 TCC Snooker Championship, so you can look forward to a high standard of play
should you come out to watch.

The Boeing 737-800 is a great plane for most travelers, enabling you to get from city to city in a r

The Boeing 737-800 is a great plane for most travelers, enabling you to get from city to city in a reasonably economic and expedient fashion. I’m currently sitting in a 737, traveling from San Francisco to Aguadilla, Puerto Rico via Newark, New Jersey. Total flight time: twelve hours. Although the flight crew is courteous and the food surprisingly good (bagels and butter and beer, oh my!), there is one major drawback to the 737: No pool table! Not only that, but in this post-911 world, I’m not even allowed to travel with my cue stick! Sure, I could have stuffed it into my checked luggage and waited at baggage claim to see if it would ever show up, but who in their right mind would ever allow a cue stick to be tossed around by an airline baggage handler, much less trust that it wouldn’t just sprout legs and run off, never to be seen again? Not me.

As the miles tick by and I sit in my cramped seat hacking away at this keyboard, I think about the enormity of the task that lies ahead of me. I’ve just publicly announced that I’m going to become a professional pool player in two years. I have no idea how long or arduous the journey will be, as I do not personally know anyone who has completed this journey. Sure, I’ve met and spoken to several professionals, but I did not have the opportunity to witness them transform themselves from beginner to professional. I must admit, I can hear a subtle seductive voice whispering softly in my ear, “You’re nuts! You’re going to fail! As soon as this plane lands, you need to log onto your WordPress account and delete the previous post. At this point, it’s unlikely that anyone has read it. Don’t risk the embarrassment associated with setting a goal and failing. Just delete the post as soon as you land, and no one will ever know.”

Hummmm….I certainly understand that logic. Why put myself out there and risk falling flat on my face? Why not just quietly toil away in some dark nondescript pool hall until I think I’m ready for the big time? I keep asking myself, “Should I just delete the post, and return to my cocoon of warmth and safety?”

Consider this. After Lance Armstrong won his battle against testicular cancer, did he roll his bike up to the starting line of the Tour de France and mumble sheepishly to himself, “Well, I hope I can do good and not embarrass myself.” NO! He boldly took his place at the starting line and barked to everyone within earshot, “I work harder than anybody else here! This is my race and nobody’s gonna to take it from me!” When Babe Ruth stepped up to the plate in game three of the 1932 World Series, did he let out a sigh and quietly whisper to himself, “Well gee, I hope I don’t strike out.” HELL NO! He stepped to the plate, raised his bat and pointed to the spectators sitting in the center field bleachers, then promptly ripped a curveball 490 feet directly over their heads, exactly to where he had just pointed. What chutzpah!

So…do you think I’m going to delete my post from yesterday? HELL NO! Damn the torpedoes! Full Speed Ahead!

Today, I am kicking off an ambitious two year journey. My mission: to transform myself from an amat

Today, I am kicking off an ambitious two year journey. My mission: to transform myself from an amateur to a professional pool player. “Two years? Are you stupid or something?” Well, stupid is as stupid does. I’ve been told by everyone that I’ve spoken to that there’s no way I can progress from my current skill level to the level of a professional in two years. So, to the professional pool players and BCA certified instructors that I’ve spoken to over the last few months who told me it absolutely couldn’t be done, I would like to say the following: “THANKS!”. By telling me it can’t be done, you have ignited a spark and fanned the flame. Now I’m motivated to attempt the impossible.

Why did I choose two years as my goal? I recently read a book by Daniel Coyle titled The Talent Code. In the book, Daniel explores the fundamental elements that contribute to the development of world-class talent, and the biological changes that occur in the brain that enable excellence. According to Daniel, the overall process of developing world-class talent takes about seven years, assuming the person has sufficient motivation, access to solid coaching, and the ability to apply what Daniel refers to as “Deep Practice”. After reading the book, I thought to myself, “I have the motivation, I have access to some of the most talented and knowledgeable coaches available in the US, and I have the ability to focus very intently on a single task. If the roots of world-class talent are really available to anyone, why not me?” I also thought to myself, “Seven years? I already have a solid understanding of the underlying physics, why not just do it in two?” Naivety…I LOVE IT!

I decided it was time to act. After reading and studying the game for well over a decade, I have accumulated an immense amount of technical knowledge. No more excuses! It’s time to get to the table and deliver some results! And so it is…with a cue stick on my back, a pep in my step, a heart of courage, and my head held high, I’m off to the undiscovered country!

Yes, we now have a sports bar in Troutman! It’s called Troutman Sports & Spirits and it

Yes, we now have a sports bar in Troutman! It’s called Troutman Sports & Spirits and it is located next to Pellegrino’s Trattoria just off Main Street in Troutman (back of the shopping center with Dominos and Movie Gallery). Troutman Sports and Spirits will be holding their grand opening on Friday, October 23! They have 15 big screen TVs for all your sports watching pleasure. Come in and eat or drink and you can play pool (free til 5pm Monday through Friday) or darts (always free), and watch any kind of sport you can think of! They have all the football games available (NFL and college). Pellegrino’s provides the food, but in addition to their regular menu, they’ve added wings and a special Troutman wrap, specifically for the sports bar customers! There will be drink specials and giveaways, and I’ve heard that the Miller Lite girls may be making an appearance that day as well! On Saturday October 24, they will broadcast the UFC fight at 10pm. So come on out and support your local businesses and check out Troutman’s newest restaurant!
