Over the years, Macca’s solo renditions of Beatles’ classics have gotten bigger — bloated really — for stadium shows. All polish, no grit.

But here Paul straps on his guitar and gets after it with his 2009 touring band on the highly underrated Beatles tune “I’ve Got A Feeling.” This performance has all the balls of the original and retains the feel of a barroom blisterer. There’s no sense that this was performed by arena-ready hired guns. It’s as if Paul was back on the roof with the lads.

I’m stunned at how good this rendition is. There’s one major downside: Abe Laboriel, Jr. (badly) singing John’s middle eight. Isn’t there a better singer in Paul’s band?

Afinal, Y Not – segundo Ringo – é outra maneira de dizer Yes, We Can!

No novo CD há uma canção chamada The Other Side Of Liverpool.

Y Not, mais um gasto marcado para 12 de janeiro.

Harry Potter Fan Sean Buban writes another beautiful song about love.

Quote:
That feeling you get inside when you think about someone you loved but never found the chance to be with them, or the feelings about knowing that vibe a special person can make you feel. This video visually is to give that feeling and describe the lyrics. This is a love song.

Sean’s made an interesting video with clips from different movie characters to be a part of his music video.

As we know this week was Rock week on X-Factor. The results show was a well good Emotional Roller co

As we know this week was Rock week on X-Factor. The results show was a well good Emotional Roller coaster. Confirmed guests was “Bon Jovi” and “JLS”. Bon Jovi’s performance was okay, I’m not a rock music fan but the performance was okay. Bon Jovi’s are legends they have been around for a good while, So i’ve heard. Their performance isn’t on Youtube so can’t show Bon Jovi fans their Performance

The X-Factor’s finalist performed “Walk this way – Aerosmith”. This performance was VERY High School Musical-led. The costume the contestants was wearing and the routine seemed very high school musical”ed”. Not to mention JOHN & EDWARD was out of tune at the beginning of the song, but when are they ever in tune!? What iCan say is that Lloyd should probably take up a Rap Career? Maybe join Harmony Hood or feature on Miss Frank’s song or maybe join N-Dubz! because being a solo artist is not helping our Lloyd.

Next to perform was JLS, Performing their new single “Everybody In Love”. I never liked this song before because it was JLS! But iHave to say… After watching JLS perform this song on X-Factor iKind of dropped my stubbornness and just had to like this song and sing along! This song to me, is better than “Beat Again”. iWas upset when JLS brought out Beat Again, because iDidn’t think it was the kind of music they would/Should do. Now if the album is going to be more like “Everybody In Love” then iShall enjoy the album! Well Done JLS this performance was GOOD! I’m sorry to say it was kind of better than Alexandra Burke’s performance! Sorry Alexandra fans… but it kind of had to be said! HOWEVER Marvin let his nerves throw off his vocals, and Word on Twitter was “Marvin is wearing a woman’s top” … iDo wonder…

After JLS performed the bottom two was announced. As always my heart was BEATING for Rachel! And they was announced. John & Edward got through so the Bottom Two was : Rachel Adedeji & Lloyd Daniels. I was heart-broken, but this is the 3rd time Rachel being in the bottom Two. She should never be there because she is nothing Compared to John & Edward! That’s a FACT!

Rachel sang Stop Crying Your Heart Out by Oasis, which was very heart-felt and soulful! It was good to see that Rachel was still smiling when she came out. That’s right Rachel keep ur head up and keep smiling!

Lloyd sang You Are So Beautiful by Billy Preston. This performance was SHIT! Sorry to say, it was nothing compared to Rachel’s, and I understand he had a sore throat, but Lloyd u sound like this every week! I really thought he was going home after this performance…

Here is who went home… Words just cannot Describe my feelings when this was announced!

iDo think what Simon did was right. It was Rachel’s 3rd time being in the bottom two… it’s quite obvious something isn’t hitting to the Public…? but was it the right decision the public made? Having John & Edward still in the competition! X-Factor is becoming a joke!

This Week Leona Lewis and Black Eyed Peas! Can’t wait for this

I’ve been a DJ for most of my life, whether it was the imaginary radio station in my bedroom when I was 11, college radio, the years I spent getting a full-time paycheck, or the more recent years I’ve done my four and hit the door. Even during the nine years I was out of radio entirely from the mid 90s to the mid 00s, I couldn’t help talking over records in the car like my Top-40 heroes of old. So why did it take me until yesterday, after five-plus years at this blog, to shut up and play the hits?

This first one is one of the best autumn songs I know. On this live version (the song was originally on the radio this week in 1974), some famous folks show up at the end to provide backing vocals and rock some 70s fashions.

Billy Preston’s original “Nothing From Nothing” is one of the most economical records in pop history, streaking out of the gate and taking less than 2:30 to get to the fade, and I’ve always wished it went on longer. On this live performance from the 1980s, it does—about 6 1/2 minutes altogether, as Billy introduces his band.

The fall of 1975 may have marked the peak of Top 40 misogyny—on the chart at the same time you had Elton John’s “Island Girl,” a song about a prostitute that tries to take an admiring tone but misses (and is racist to boot), and Elton’s collaboration with Neil Sedaka on “Bad Blood,” in which Neil sings that “woman was born to lie” and “the bitch is in the smile.” And that fills this video with all sorts of contradictions. His backup singers both appear positively thrilled to be part of this smackdown of their gender, and Sedaka comes off as such a dweeb that it’s clear either one of them could kick his ass.

An alternate viewpoint—quite nearly an answer song—was on the radio at precisely the same time. It’s here. Meanwhile, back here on the show, the Brothers Johnson get on down in a video that seems to have been partly shot through a lens smeared with chocolate pudding.

Veteran TV director Louis J. Horvitz would have gotten away with it if the clip below didn’t include a credit roll from its original source, an episode of Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert broadcast in October 1975. But now we know he’s responsible for giving us as many shots of the Tavares brothers from the back as from the front, and we know how much he loves the circular wipe. LOUIE FOR CHRISSAKES STAY ON A SINGLE SHOT FOR MORE THAN FIVE SECONDS DAMMIT

Mighty good song, though.

“Little Sally Walker sitting in a saucer…Rise Sally Rise…” Who remembers wiping your weepin’ eyes, putting your hands on your hips and letting your backbone slip? At least this is the version of the Little Sally Walker game I remember from growing up in the 70s a pretty little Black girl in Arkansas-not a colored girl-that was the previous generation. Some versions said “Ride Sally Ride” but that must have been up north with the citified folks– if you know what I mean. Anyway, a “Sally” would be chosen and her best girlfriends would hold hands and form a circle around her until she did her little dance to their little singsong chant and landed face-to-face on the next “Sally” to take center stage. “Ah shake it to the east…Ah shake it to the west! Shake it to the one that you love the best!” I was reminded of this innocent little game recently when I saw it being performed by the lead character Pearl played by Tony-award winning, Broadway sensation, Tonya Pinkins, in the stage play Black Pearl Sings! Pearl added the necessary “flava” to the version of “Little Sally Walker” that her White counterpart, a rather conservative and stiff Susannah, had offered up which lacked the sway, shake, and swirl of soul-stirring, child-bearing hips filled with song and a yearning. Pearl tried her best to give Susannah a lesson and I do think she kind of caught on after a few tries but just kept falling short when it came time to shake it to the east!

Black Pearl Sings!, written by Frank Higgins and directed by Jennifer L. Nelson, reaches back in its depiction to the 1930s when the Library of Congress hired researchers, writers, and artists to travel the United States in search of unbeknownst folklore to collect and preserve for future generations. The character Susannah, played by the super talented Erika Rolfsrud, is a musicologist who takes the charge and sets out to discover little-known melodies in Texas that she hopes will bring her fame and a professorship at Harvard. It is just her luck when she encounters Pearl who has spent years in prison for chopping off her ex’s pecker. Pearl has inside of her countless songs shaped by both African and African-American traditions and ancestral roots that have been passed down to her from her family and community that date back to slavery times and some going all the way back to Africa before her people were stolen away and brought and enslaved on an island off of South Carolina called Hilton Head (before the lush golf courses). Pearl will gladly share her treasures with Susannah if she will do her a favor as well, that is, assist her in finding her daughter who has disappeared from her and, of course, get her a pardon from the Governor. A deal is made. And such begins the tension of the play-Susannah’s motivations for fame and recognition versus Pearl’s motivations for family and fortune, in that exact order. The two engage in an unlikely partnership that takes them to Harlem where Pearl becomes a recording sensation and the star of a one-woman show to the delight of Susannah and other seekers of folklore and a little bit of caricature thrown in for good measure. Although they celebrate their successes together, Pearl is quick to remind Susannah throughout the play that they aren’t friends-“just friend-ly”.

In the end, what does Pearl sacrifice and what does she hold sacred and not for sale? If you want to find out how the story ends, there are a few more show times left at the Ford Theatre in Washington, D.C. Be prepared to be thoroughly entertained by Pinkin’s perfect comedic timing but more importantly her powerful a capella delivery of joy and pain in some recognizable spirituals like “Do Lord, Oh Do Lord, Do Remember Me.” Pinkins brings boldness to her character as she portrays a dynamic woman who is self-assured, confident, and in control but she also brings the angst and desperation that lies just beneath Pearl’s surface until it at first seeps, then pours out in her rich, soulful renditions of songs that speak to her tribulations.

After experiencing Black Pearl Sings! and exploring the notion of how a people holds onto their collective traditions that at some point begin to symbolize the best and worst of times, it got me thinking about how we pass stories down from generation to generation. Our way of life will one day be characterized as folklore by future historians and anthropologists. What will they dig up? What will we leave behind? According to the Texas Folklore Society, “Folklore is the traditional knowledge of a culture. Although it can be closely related to history at times, folklore concerns the things about a group that are not usually found in historical records.” Well we all know what happens when we rely on others to document us—some major stuff gets left out-namely–us. There’s HisStory, HerStory, & TheirStory. What about your story?

Recently, I got the compliment of my life when my daughter told me that she enjoys it when I tell my stories and she told me this with a straight face and she didn’t follow her statement up with a request of any kind. SHOCKING! When I heard her say that, my backbone slipped, I broke into a wide smile, and jumped up and did a dance. Ah shake it to the east! Ah shake it to the west! Who loves mama’s stories the best? I had no idea she actually listened to them–let alone enjoyed them. That was never a requirement for me to tell them. I decided to test her by throwing out a couple of words to see if doing so would trigger her memory about the story relating to the words. For starters, I said “Uncle Lynn” and she said, “The Chicken Story” and I said “Yes” with pride! I asked her to expand and she didn’t quite have all the details so I chimed in and retold the story with all the nuances and proper inflections and climatic build-up and requisite chuckle at the end. My job won’t be done until she knows the story word for word and can mock me just like I use to do with Uncle Lynn when he use to tell me the same story over and over again every time I saw him.

Now this is what concerns me. Somehow I don’t think we are passing down our stories with such deliberateness as before. Oral traditions have morphed into cyber traditions. I fear that with so many communications taking place on the computer, much is going to be lost in a hard drive meltdown or into cyberspace, the boundaries of which has got to be the last frontier. I started thinking about ways to preserve our stories for generations to come as we continue to become, for good or for bad, one with our computer. If creating a legacy, preserving your history, and leaving behind lessons of love and wisdom and stories that embody every emotion under the sun is important to you and I know it is, take a look at the list of ideas that follows on how to do so. Go ahead, try a couple and I will too. By the way, I bet you want to hear that chicken story, huh? The next time we meet up, either I or my daughter will tell you for some supper. OK, she probably won’t but I will.

Ten Ideas on How to Pass Down Stories in the Digital Age

Tell the same story over and over again to your intended audience until you see evidence that it has stuck. They will be annoyed and roll their eyes but don’t let that dissuade you. If they run from you, tie them up.

Keep a journal or a diary. If you do it online, print it out and place the pages in a binder.

Write an autobiography. Don’t worry about whether it will ever be published. Write is for your own release and to pass on the story of you.

Videotape elders and asks a lot of questions. And of course videotape you and your children telling your favorite stories or just experiencing life. Make a transcript of the tapes and store it away in a safe spot just in case.

Make a scrapbook of photographs and include notes to provide information regarding the occasion. Be sure to include the date, location and place. And while we are on photographs, be sure to print them out soon after you take them. Even if they don’t make it in the album or scrapbook right away, at least you are a step closer.

If you are an artist, make a list that includes your works and the date of creation. If you are a writer, try to gather your writings in one place. As a bonus, record how your art speaks to you, your motivation to create, and whatever else you want folks to know about your passion long after you are gone. As we all know, some artists are so forward thinking, that they are not fully appreciated until their death. I’m sure that’s the case with me now (clearing throat).

At the next family reunion, record all the activities, especially those times where your family is just sitting down reminiscing on the days of old or what embarrassing thing Uncle did last night at the family dinner. Also, another fun thing to do at the reunion is to create a scavenger hunt for the children by compiling a list of questions regarding interesting facts about the older folks and elders. Some sample questions could be, “Which cousin graduated from X college with a degree in X?” or “Which cousin’s favorite book is “Their Eyes Watching God?” or “Which elder grew up in X and witnessed X?” or “Find someone over 40 to give you some quick advice and write it down.” Whoever gets the most answers correct in a set amount of time wins a prize. This game was a hit at one of my previous reunions and everyone left with some more information about their relatives.

Write letters to your little ones or loved ones to be read at a later date. I know you just want to email them but you need to print them out for delivery. I’m sorry Mr. Trees but when is the last time someone discovered an old forgotten computer tucked away in an old dusty chest in the attic? Enough said-not too mention technology is changing rapidly but paper is paper.

Have everyone in your family make a list of their favorite things from foods to music to hobbies every year and store it away for safekeeping.

Start a blog that chronicles your life or records the progression of things and topics that hold your interest and are significant to you. Again, print out your entries and store them in a binder as back up.

BONUS

This one is for those of you on sites like Facebook and MySpace. On significant days in history, save and print out you and your friends’ reactions to the event for future generations. You never know, there may come a time when social media is a laughable relic of the past.

OK that’s all I can think of for now. If you think of any other ways to preserve your stories for your children, family, and all of posterity, please let me know. Now let me tell you a story about a man named Jed, a poor mountaineer, barely kept his family fed. Then one day…

Well you know the rest, right?

————————————————————————

William Everett “Billy” Preston (September 2, 1946 – June 6, 2006) was an American soul musician from Houston, Texas, raised mostly in Los Angeles, California. In addition to his successful, Grammy-winning career as a solo artist, Preston collaborated with some of the greatest names in the music industry, including the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Nat King Cole, Little Richard, Eric Burdon, Ray Charles, George Harrison, Elton John, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Sam Cooke, King Curtis, Sammy Davis Jr., Sly Stone, Aretha Franklin, the Jackson 5, Quincy Jones, Mick Jagger, Richie Sambora, and Red Hot Chili Peppers. He played the Fender Rhodes electric piano and the Hammond organ on the Beatles’ Get Back sessions in 1969.

Preston along with Tony Sheridan are the only two non-Beatles to receive billing as an artist alongside the Beatles (as distinct from receiving credit as a session musician on album packaging) on an official Beatles record release. The label of the Get Back single credits the artists on the record as The Beatles with Billy Preston.

Signed to the Beatles’ Apple label, in 1969, Preston released the album That’s the Way God Planned It and a single of the same name (produced by George Harrison). His relationship with Harrison continued after the breakup of The Beatles; he was the first artist to record “My Sweet Lord”, in his album Encouraging Words (Harrison’s own version of the single hit number one in the U.S. and the UK and was the first number one by a former Beatle after they disbanded) and he was on several of Harrison’s 1970s solo albums. Preston also made notable contributions to The Concert for Bangladesh, the Harrison-organized charity concert, toured with Harrison on his 1974 tour of North America and, after Harrison’s death, The Concert for George. Preston also worked on solo recordings by two other ex-Beatles, John Lennon and Ringo Starr. Sadly, he passed away in 2006.

This video clip is a rousing rendition of That’s The Way God Planned It from the 1971 Concert For Bangladesh. Take note of George Harrison’s white suit and stylish hairdo.

Valió la pena la espera? Totalmente. Aunque bien lejos de mi casa, estrenaron por fin Be Kind Rewind

Valió la pena la espera? Totalmente.

.

I’ll be honest, I had no intention of writing a post today. There, I said it. However, I tell you that, dear reader, to underscore the importance of the following topic (and there is a hint of sarcasm on the “importance”).

Over the past few weeks, I have been watching Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Now, I know what you’re thinking, “well, of course you are, there’s a ton of Beatles stuff everywhere right now.” Left me tell you that the only thing the Beatles did to this was write the music.

No, this travesty of music, theatre, and musical theatre is just plain does not have a single Beatle in it (not even the 5th one). Instead, it is a movie that is filled with lots of “stars” from 1978. Who’s in this film you ask?

Peter Frampton

The Bee Gees

Alice Cooper

George Burns

Aerosmith

Earth, Wind, and Fire

Steve Martin

Billy Preston

I want you to stop for a second and think about the list above. Read over it and digest the material. That’s right, there are a ton of famous people from then and now.

I wish I could say it was great (or even good)…

Oh, who am I kidding, it’s horrible. It is one of the worst films of all time! It is so terrible that it made Jumper look like a Picture of the Year contender. It was one horrible musician number after another, and it just didn’t stop. It keep coming and coming, punishing both your ears and eyes.

If you like “bad” movies, this one is just about the worst. Let’s face it, it was 1978, people liked the Beatles music and the Bee Gees were huge, but is this the best they could do? I can hear the pitch for it now: “We’ll take Peter Frampton, yeah the kids love him. And we’ll mix in the Bee Gees, because those guys are man’s men. Now, we need music… What to use, what to use? Hey, the Beatles broke up earlier this decade, people will really want to see their music in a new light. Yeah, yeah, that’s the ticket…”

The problem is that someone should have stopped them, and expressed how bad of an idea this movie was. Because of this film, I have lost respect for Alice Cooper and even more for Aerosmith, who plays the “villain’s” band. (Think Steve Vai in Crossroad.) Of course, this is where/why Aerosmith recorded Come Together, which is a great version. The problem is when you see the big finale, it’s hard to forgive them.

Here’s a couple of interesting things, apparently this was Steve Martin’s first role in a feature film. That’s right, this is before The Jerk or even The Muppets. Talk about a blemish on a great career.

So, my warning is this: Stay away, unless you just can’t help but see the train wreck which is Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Watch it but be warned…

What a beautiful tribute to their departed friend George Harrison. Here’s Billy Preston, the fifth Beatle (yep, look it up) with Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, Paul McCartney, Phil Collins, Tom Petty and George Harrison’s son. Billy Preston died probably not too long after this was performed.

By the mid-1970s, soul had by and large left behind its R&B roots and the influence of funk and what would become widely known as disco was beginning to manifest itself — many soul acts of the period crossed back and forth between soul, funk and disco.

A few notes on some of the featured acts:

The Impressions had soldiered on after Curtis Mayfield went solo in 1970 (you might want to revisit the Mayfield tracks posted here). By the time they had a trio of hits in 1974/75, Mayfield’s successor as lead singer, Leroy Hutson had departed as well, having been replaced by Reggie Torian and Ralph Johnson (the latter left in 1976). The song featured here was not a hit, but might be the best Impressions song of the period. The Natural Four, incidentally, were signed to Mayfield’s Curtom label and produced by Leroy Hutson at the time of Can This Be Real.

William DeVaughn sounds vaguely like Mayfield channelling Timmy Thomas. DeVaughn paid $900 to record Be Thankful For What You Got in 1972 in Philadelphia, with the MFSB band backing him. On its release in 1974 it became a massive hit. Yo La Tengo and Massive Attack fans will know the song from those groups’ covers. It’s a boss groove which Squeeze must have known when they conjured the chorus of 1987’s Hourglass. Everybody now: “Diamond in the back, sunroof top, diggin’ the scene with a gangsta lean.”

The Soul Children were formed in the late 1960s by Isaac Hayes and David Porter for Stax. The group included John Colbert (who would take the stagename J Blackfoot), who before becoming one of the four soul children had been serving a prison sentence with Johnny Bragg of The Prisonaires. After his release he met Otis Redding who invited him to travel on the plane that would kill Redding and most of the Bar-Keys. There was no room on the plane… I’ll Be The Other Woman, written by Homer Banks and Carl Hampton, belongs in the canon of great cheating songs. Here “the other woman” warns her adulterous lover not to cheat on her.

Sidney Joe Qualls was billed as “the new Al Green” when he appeared on the scene. He never reached the Reverend’s great heights, but his How Can You Say Goodbye To Someone, written by Sam Dees, might well be one of the best Al Green tracks Al never recorded.

The Moments, whose Sexy Mama is much better than the title would suggest, soon would have to change their name for contractual reasons, despite having recorded under that moniker for close to a decade, even scoring two UK Top 10 hits and a UK #3 hit with Girls, their collaboration with the Whatnauts. We will meet them again in this series as Ray Goodman Brown. Sexy Mama would be a great companion piece to Billy Paul’s Let’s Make A Baby (posted here as a bonus track).

Gene Page, whose instrumental All Our Dreams Are Coming True is this set’s most conspicuous nod to disco, was noted more as an arranger, having worked with artists as diverse as Buffalo Springfield, The Righteous Brothers, The Supremes, Elton John and Barbra Streisand.

Syreeta featured on the second ’60s soul mix as Rita Wright, and on the 1970/71 mix as a co-writer of Stevie Wonder’s If You Really Love Me. She was briefly married to Wonder, who continued to promote her career after they split, to the extent that the 1974 album on which the bluesy Black Maybe appears was titled Stevie Wonder Presents Syreeta.

TRACKLISTING
1. Billy Preston – Nothing From Nothing
2. The Main Ingredient – Just Dont Want To Be Lonely

DOWNLOAD

As always, the mix is timed to fit on a standard CD-R (and includes a front and back cover, if needed). And as always there were a few tracks left over which even at my most ruthless I just could not cull. Both Labi Siffre and Kool & the Gang’s songs were prominently sampled, the former on Eminem’s My Name Is, the latter on DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince’s Summertime. Both are seriously funky; the high notes on Summer Madness should get your dog dancing. If I had included them in the mix, I’d have cued them after the DeVaughn track.

Peekin’ and a hidin’,duck back in the alley
Don’t wanna rip it up,don’t wanna dance with Annie
I’ve got a brand new lover name is Short Fat Fannie

One day while I was visit’n at HeartBreak Hotel
Thats where I met Fannie and she sure looked swell
I told her that I loved her and I’d never leave
She put her arms around me, gave me fever

She’s my tutti fruiti,I love the child so
She watch me like a hound dog everywhere I go

Well at a honky tonk party just the other night

Standpoint

Here’s something I wonder about from time to time. If I was a character in a horror movie, would I be the funny guy who died right away? Or would I be the one who, once I realized what was going, became the voice of reason/whiny guy and be the last one slaughtered before the male and female lead made their triumphant stand and figured out how to beat the killer? Also, I wonder if my character would put up a good fight or if I’d be the victim of choosing the wrong hallway to walk down and get my head lopped off when I turned an unfortunate corner where some psycho was strategically waiting.

It may not seem important to think about such things, but I’m sure if you think about it for a short while, you’ll understand just how important it really is.

Quotation

The chief function of the city is to convert power into form, energy into culture, dead matter into the living symbols of art, biological reproduction into social creativity. ◊ Lewis Mumford

Tune

In doing this blog, I learn several new things everyday. It’s one of the great parts of doing it, actually. For instance, while researching today’s post, I learned the name for Throw Me The Statue was originally the title of a mixtape made by Scott Reitherman who eventually turned it into the name for his musical endeavours. TMTS released a new album in August – Creaturesque – and I can say with confidence it’s pretty great. Go to Stereogum to download “Ancestors.” And then go get the whole frickin’ album.

Gallimaufry

• I know everyone’s talking about how print media is going the way of fax machines and MySpace but I gotta tell you – I still love reading music magazines in my hands instead of off a computer screen. One such periodical I’m enjoying very much in the last few months is The Fader. It has to do with the selection of topics and the quality of the articles. The album reviews are done in a cool and unique way, too. Peter Macia’s “Phoenix Remains a Band Apart – Inseparable” from the July/August 2009 issue was as much about an individual’s personal music experience as it was informative about the band.

• Twitter is huge but Facebook has the staying power in the social networking battle royale. Check out Erik Linask’s “I’m in a Facebook State of Mind” if you don’t believe me.

• Dear Hollywood, why are you trying to ruin everything ever? I just read you’re remaking Teen Wolf. Please. Stop. Now.
