The fourth year biology students went to NSTDA yesterday, myself and Aj.Rattanavijit included. We spent a whole day over there. I might need to update again for each of the location we have visited, for there were more points to make.

For example, we went to Sirindhorn Science House in the morning. While we were there, we went to see the exhibition on Darwin. More importantly, a free lunch also provided by our host.

In the afternoon, we went to the headquarter of NSTDA to be oriented with what they do and what are their plans for the future. I believed some of our students might be interested in this kind of information.

Finally, we went to visit a number of laboratories at BIOTEC before heading back to Payathai.

From Thailand’s National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, the government supported research center has released the Enzhance lysis buffer reagent that would be useful in microbial protein extraction.

According to the website, the product named Enzhance, is developed by the BIOTEC Enzyme Technology Laboratory, and provides quick, efficient and gentle extraction of active proteins from various types of microbial cells. The product will also be useful in extracting high levels of cellular proteins from bacteria, yeasts or fungi. Interested parties could purchase this product directly from BIOTEC, as it is not known if they have set up any distribution partners to market the product outside of Thailand.

Africans are the first to send seeds (for corn, soy, and other food crops) to the Arctic seed repository, by way of Oslo.

African seed collection first to arrive in Norway on route to Arctic seed vault
The vault is being built by the Norwegian government as a service to the global community, and a Rome-based international NGO, the Global Crop Diversity Trust, will fund its operation. The vault will open on 26 February 2008.

The shipment, which was sent by the Ibadan, Nigeria-based International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), consists of thousands of duplicates of unique varieties of domesticated and wild cowpea, maize, soybean, and Bambara groundnut. The seeds from the IITA genebank in Ibadan, Nigeria, were packed in 21 boxes weighing a total of 330 kg. The processing by IITA staff took several months, and the boxes were packaged over a three-day period, with 10 staff checking the accession list, reporting errors, and adjusting the inventory, as needed.
