One flew low over the road just before the bridge.

At least 50 visiting the garden feeders today, a handful of each Redpoll, Goldfinch, Grennfinch and Chaffinch were amoung them.

At least 20 on the lake today.

In Rob and Em’s garden there was 1 Redpoll, 2 Siskins, 3 Goldfinches and the rest of the usaul gang.

At least 3 Willow Tits seen today in Caerhyddwen woods, Nantglas. Associating with a mixed flock also containing 10+ Long tailed tits, Great, Blue, Coal Tits and a few Siskin. A couple of Great Spotted Woodpeckers, Jay and 2 Buzzards made up the numbers.

During a walk around Crossgates this afternoon, we saw 14 snipe, in the field adjacent to the church, then walking up the hill opposite the church, there were 500+ starling roosting on the telegragh wires, and a pair of sparrowhawks hunting.

While out catching Woodcock this evening, we caught a Stock Dove that had taken up refuge on the ground for the evening!

Shame about the miss placed feathers, but he was a wriggly little fella! 2 Woodcock were also caught.

Our visitor despatched a Starling on Sat 30th.

Brief visits from 2 male Bramblings, otherwise nothing new.

Lake vitually frozen over  on Sat , but still 5 Goosanders. Today Feb 2nd we counted 105 Canada Geese-100 too many!!!

10 drakes and 15 redheads on the lake this morning, also the drake Mandarin still.

5 seen this evening, also 1 Common Snipe and a possible Jack Snipe!

Big Garden Birdwatch in my garden today – 4 Redpoll, 9 Goldfinch, 2 Bullfinch, 9 Chaffinch, 4 House Sparrow, 1 Great Tit, 10 Blue Tit, 3 Siskin, 1 Robin, 1 Blackbird and 29 Starling!

At least 1 visiting the feeding station today.

Other birds present included 35+ Siskins, 10+ Goldfinches, 20+ Chaffinches, 10+ Greenfinches, 1 Bullfinch, 25+ Blue Tits, 10+ Great Tits, 5+ Coal Tits, 1 Marsh Tit, 10+ Blackbirds, 5+ Robins, 3+ Nuthatches, 4+ Dunnocks, 12+ House Sparrows, 1 Fieldfare, 2 Great Spotted Woodpeckers, 2 Crows, 2 Magpies, 3 Jays, 1 Sparrowhawk and 8+ Starlings.

Other birds present included 350+ Red Kites, 20+ Buzzards, 50+ Crows, 15+ Rooks, 10+ Ravens, 2 Grey Herons, 3 Pied Wagtails and 6 Long-tailed Tits.

3 seen on the reserve this morning.  Little esle up there due to the snow, just a handful of Crows, 2 Jackdaws and 1 Raven!

1 in the garden today. Also 8 Longtailed Tits, 2 Bullfinches and the usual Goldfinches, Chaffinches, Bluet Tits, Great Tits etc.

1 trapped and ringed early this morning, also a Woodcock nearby.

3 male Bullfinches just sat in a tree our garden in Llandod for a couple of minutes -  but where are the girls?!

Our resident predator made another spectacular attempt yesterday scattering birds in all directions but was this time unsuccessful and landed in the hedge. This time he caught all the birds completely unaware, swooping in low over the gate, a Blue tit appeared to be his target but managed to zip away just in time.

Overall it has been a slow week bird wise and it seem to take an age to build up a decent variety of species for the BTO garden birdwatch we do each week.  A few of the regulars finally appeared yesterday to make it look half respectable! Despite this we continue to record new species for the garden (we have only been living here for 6 weeks, the novelty will wear off!) with an unfortunate Pied Wagtail with a broken leg appearing regularly and today a Jay. The Brambling hasn’t been back though and overall the Chaffinches are down in numbers, the flock having dispersed with the milder weather.

One reported at the lake, no further details.
