It’s so exciting, last night the last vision I had outside was the herons in the tree. I came in feeling bad I didn’t fish, but the weather was too cold. Ringo went to bed early and I monitored his dreams, first it was Pinhead, then it was the ‘Saw’ figure.
You can see Ringo was having nightmares. I whispered to his subconscious that he must think lovely thoughts. next thing I know, ‘Saw’ had melded into a sweet Casper Then another being came in — ET gave him a cat massage and put him into sweet alpha sleep. He slept all night until Payne woke him at 6:30am, if you know Payne, she is a cartoon political pundit who time travels using cat bladders, she needed Ringo’s. He woke and left who knows where he went…
But back to reality, went outside and the heron pair were still in the tree, they are shaping twigs, building their nest it looks like, WOW do I feel like Chanukah Harry and Santa have left me a gift!!!!

The male snaps twigs off the tree and sometimes flies off and gets twigs and she shapes them. I have been watching and she drops a lot of twigs in the water below. They must be new at this, wonder if these are kids of the parents in my neighbors yard last year? The male gets kind of impatient and bangs her with his beak. She is working hard trying to make her home. I will keep you posted as to their progress. It’s so exciting I can hardly contain myself!

On a trip to the Morton Arboretum in Lisle, Illinois to photograph all things autumn – by sheer luck and a good case of the right place at the right time – to my great pleasure I observed the following… I call it lunch to go:

This is the Hawk that I spied

This Hawk had its eye on something else

It landed and let me get quite close – almost as if to challenge me

I noticed movement under the Hawks left talon … do you see it?

the hawk not wanting me to get too close decided to take his lunch to go

left me standing there with no wingman…

a favorite local birdwatching and photowalking spot.
This trip we observed a variety of wading birds like this Green Heron
shown above who was on a hunt for its evening meal…

This summer was the first time either one of us met a Sandhill Crane up close and personal.

Kensington Metropark is a nesting area for Great Blue Herons which can be viewed wading in the lake around the nesting sites at any given time.
We’ve been fortunate to have been able to observe a variety of birds on these visits and would recommend anyone passing through Michigan to stop and check it out, you won’t be disappointed!

It’s probably not surprising that, as a birder, I occasionally dream about birds. Almost always, the birds I see in my dreams are unidentifiable. Instead of dreaming I saw actual tanagers, buntings, or grosbeaks, I often dream of seeing some weird creature I’ve never seen in books: the kind of creature you’d say you’d never dreamed of.

In these dreams, I’m always without a field guide, so I spend most of the dream staring at the unusual bird and reciting its field marks to myself, forcing myself to remember a combination of colors that seems so striking, you’d think it would be easy to identify later. In nearly all instances, though, I wake up without remembering exactly what I saw. Was it an orange bird with green wings and a purple head? Or was it a purple bird with green wing-bars and an orange rump? Whether or not I actually remember any of the details, though, the simple fact remains: the birds of my dreams don’t exist. Even if I could remember their field marks, I’ll never find them in any field guide because they represent an idea that doesn’t exist outside of dreams.

One night last week, I dreamed I saw an unbelievably bright, lemon-colored bird, the size and stockiness of a large sparrow. It literally glowed in the tree it was in, its plumage similar in color to the reflective, Day-Glo vests that runners wear after dark to avoid getting hit by cars. More incredible, though, was the texture of its individual feathers, which were curly, giving the bird the nubbled appearance of a close-cropped poodle or short-tufted Berber rug. In my dream, the astonishing nature of this bird’s plumage reminded me of the overlapping, crowded and curled petals of dry hydrangea flowers, leading me to repeat to myself over and over, astonished, this most remarkable of field marks: “It looks like a yellow hydrangea-head! It looks like a yellow hydrangea-head!” And then I woke up.

I’ve spent the last few weeks of my spare time creating new bird calendars. The great thing about this, they really look good. The frustrating thing about this, it is so hard to choose what goes in and what gets cut. I always want to include more birds and more shots of the same birds. The images below are linked directly to the two calendars. So here are the details and rather than retype everything all over again, I’ll quote from my newsletter…

Greetings!

It has been an interesting year. To celebrate, I’ve created two new calendars for 2010. The first one covers some of our local diurnal raptors. (San Francisco Bay Area) The second is a general birding calendar to celebrate some of my other favorite bird species also found in the San Francisco Bay Area. The older calendars are available for sale too, and all show the upcoming days for 2010.

Raptor Calendar #4 – Raptors of the San Francisco Bay Area

2009 saw the return of a nesting pair of peregrines to downtown San Francisco. This brought more opportunity for photography and some dramatic images. I’ve included three images of the peregrines along with shots of Red-tailed Hawks, American Kestrels, Northern Harriers, and a White-tailed Kite.

Birds of the San Francisco Bay Area Calendar

From the January page:

San Francisco Bay Area birding is some of the richest in the country with more than 120 species found in and around San Francisco. While this calendar shows only thirteen of them, they are some of my favorites. I hope you will enjoy them and that they will inspire you to go out and observe birds where you live.

Birds are facing increasing challenges because of habitat loss, pollution, pesticides, and collisions with wind turbines and building windows. There are many organizations, both national and local, working to address these issues, and they could use your help. Check with your local Audubon chapter to see what you can do to make this a better world for birds and in turn for all of us.

My goal in photographing these magnificent creatures is to bring the joy of flight to others and to showcase the incredible speed and grace that birds exhibit. I hope these images will awaken a greater appreciation of nature and the need for conservation of all that we hold dear on this planet.

If you would like to preview the images at a larger size than those shown at the CafePress website, please visit my home page raptor-gallery.com and follow the links.

I’ll be adding greeting cards from some of the calendar images and other shots to my CafePress store soon and would welcome suggestions for new cards. Send your email suggestions of images to me at glenn@raptor-gallery.com

I hope you will enjoy these calendars and I wish you all a great holiday and a peaceful and happy new year.

Kindest Regards,
Glenn Nevill
