Endlich habe ich ihn gefunden: Den geheimen Eingang. Und zum Glück haben sie es darüber geschrieben, sonst hätte ich vielleicht gar nicht gemerkt, dass der Eingang geheim ist. Wie dem auch sei, die Korrekturfahnen sind durch, am Montag kann Birkenfeld. Fragmentarische Lebenszeichen. in Druck gehen. Und wer mir darüber hinaus als Erster sagen kann, wo denn dieser (geheime) Eingang nun genau ist, der kriegt von mir ein handsigniertes Exemplar frei Haus. Einfach eine E-Mail an eingang@derdisorder.de. Name und Adresse nicht vergessen. Einen Einsendeschluss gibt es nicht. Die Verlosung läuft, bis die erste richtige Lösung eingegangen ist. Wenn das der Fall ist, steht’s dann auch hier im Blog. Der Rechtsweg ist ausgeschlossen. Viel Spaß beim Suchen.

Kurze Rückmeldung mitten in der Nacht nach langer Zeit des Schweigens und des Arbeitens. Weitere Rückmeldungen hätte es gegeben, wenn es die Kürze des Tages und der Nächte erlaubt hätte. Doch nun ist der Punkt erreicht, an dem es Klarheiten gibt. Kurzes Glück ist die letzte Erzählung, die es ins Buch schafft. Manchmal hilft sogar klassische Musik, um kurz vor Toreschluss noch ein geliebtes Kind unterzubringen. Die Nacht hat sich gelohnt, der Sonntag wird reichen.
Kryptische Andeutungen zugegeben, doch erst langsam entwirrt sich das Chaos in meinem Kopf. Ein Blick durch den Sucher auf meinen Arbeitsplatz hilft manchmal. Daher das Foto. So ist es, wie ich es mir immer vorgestellt habe. Leute, kauft dieses Buch! Mehr kann ich nicht sagen. Die letzte Zigarette des Tages ist geraucht. Der Rest ist Zukunft. Zukunftsmusik. Komische Überschrift, doch das war der Gedanke. Der Band mit Kurzgeschichten und Erzählungen nimmt mehr und mehr Formen an. Er wächst und gedeiht – wie ein Baby im Bauch seiner Mutter. Und genau, wie sich Geburtstermine verschieben können und mehr oder weniger nur ein Anhaltspunkt sind, so können sich auch Erscheinungstermine noch verändern. Die Erscheinung war vornherein eine knappe Angelegenheit und wie sich nun leider herausgestellt hat, wird der Termin 30. November leider nicht ganz zu halten sein.
Um ein wenig mehr Luft zum Atmen zu haben und die ein oder andere Entscheidung vielleicht auch noch einmal überschlafen zu können, ist der Erscheinungstermin von Birkenfeld. Fragmentarische Lebenszeichen am Freitag auf Montag, den 07. Dezember 2009 verschoben worden. Dieser Termin – und das sei hiermit versprochen – ist nun endgültig und sozusagen als Zeichen dafür steht seit vorgestern nun auch das Cover des Buches fest. Das Motiv taucht weiter unten in diesem Blog schon einmal auf und ist letztlich auch aus dieser Idee geboren.
Und auch, wenn man ja bekanntlich ein Buch nicht nach seinem Umschlag beurteilen soll, hoffe ich trotzdem, es gefällt. Ich finde den Einband sehr gelungen, drückt das Cover in meinen Augen doch absolut die Stimmung der Geschichten aus, die in dem Band enthalten sein werden. Denn wer mich kennt, weiß, dass sich die Erzählungen und Fragmente keineswegs um eitel Sonnenschein und herbeigezauberte Happy-Ends drehen werden.
Im Übrigen ist auch am Titel nun nicht mehr zu rütteln. Die Entscheidung für den Titel Birkenfeld und gegen den ursprünglich angedachten Titel Zwei Meerjungfrauen war letztlich eine logische Schlussfolgerung aus den Essenzen aller Geschichten, die in dem Band enthalten sein werden. Merke ich doch beim Schreiben immer wieder, wie sehr mich die Kleinstadt im Süden der Republik, in der ich einen Großteil meiner Jugend verbracht habe, auch heute noch beeinflusst und beschäftigt. Dennoch – und das sei betont – steht auch Birkenfeld eigentlich nur stellvertretend für alle anderen Kleinstädte in unserer Republik – seien sie nun im Norden, Süden, Westen oder Osten der Republik. Birkenfeld steht exemplarisch für ein Leben außerhalb Berlins und damit gleichzeitig als Kontrast zu dem Leben, das man in einer Großstadt führt. Die Erzählungen in dem Band beschäftigen sich mit Beiden und sind sowohl Lebenszeichen aus der Kleinstadt als auch aus der Großstadt. Und eben genau, weil sie sind, was sie sind – nämlich Lebenszeichen – und keineswegs den Anspruch verfolgen, allumfassende Weisheiten zu verbreiten, sondern im Gegenteil meist nur kurze Abschnitte des großen Ganzen beschreiben, genau deshalb sind diese Lebenszeichen fragmentarisch.

Esta es una historia que tuvo lugar hace dos días, pero que no tenía claro si contarla. Algunos pensareis que soy un gilipollas, otros un buenazo, y todos que soy un friki. Pero bueno, la historia en sí no tiene desperdicio y merece ser contada.

Hará cosa de un mes se puso en contacto conmigo a través del blog un chico que venía a estudiar a Trier con una beca. El chico quería información sobre la ciudad, como llegar, y algunas cosillas. Yo me acuerdo cuando llegué, que todo la información que tenía fue a través de Laura, una de las chicas Erasmus que vino el curso pasado, y que gracias a eso supe por dónde empezar a buscar casa, y alguna cosa más. Así que ayudar a este chico, igual que a cualquier otra persona, es casi una obligación moral. La cuestión es que le respondí a todo lo que me preguntó, y hace cosa de una semana me escribió diciendo que venía el Lunes.

El Lunes fue un día normal en el trabajo. Siempre tengo intención de llegar prontito al trabajo. Con el horario flexible que tenemos en el trabajo, te puedes ir antes, o sino, como intento ir al gimnasio los Lunes y los Miércoles (hoy me lo he saltado), me da tiempo a ir, y salir a una hora decente. Así que cuando volví del gimnasio, miro el correo, y me encuentro con un mail de su hermana diciéndome que su hermano está en la parada de autobús, y que no encuentra ningún taxi, ni autobús que le lleve a su campus, y me da su número de teléfono. Llamo al chico y le digo que voy a la parada. Total, vivo al lado, son 2 minutos andando.

Llego a la parada, y la única persona que hay este chaval, además era fácilmente reconocible por la cantidad de bultos que llevaba con él. Le saludo, le doy la bienvenidda, le pregunto que tal el viaje, y le digo que me ha llegado un mail de su hermana. Él me dice que no ha visto ningún autobús que le lleve al campus, y ningún taxi ha querido llevarle. Al final le digo que le llevo en mi coche, pensando que sería una residencia que hay por algún pueblo cercano.

Subimos al coche, y le pregunto donde está el campus. Él no tenía ningún papel ni nada, solo decía que era el campus de Birkenfeld. Pongo Birkenfel en el GPS y me aparecen como 10 pueblos en Alemania que se llaman Birkenfeld. Así que le digo de subir un momento a mi casa y mirar en Google maps donde está el campus. Ya en casa, buscamos FH Trier campus Birkenfeld, y aparece una página. Miramos la localización y está en un pueblo que se llama Neubrücke. Miramos con Google maps la distancia desde casa, y hay…60 kilometrazos! Yo flipando, y pensando que no podía ser ese el pueblo, que la universidad de Trier está en Trier. Y el chico este flipando, y diciendo que no sabe lo que hacer, que se va a un hostal, y mañana ya verá que hace, que va a hablar con la universidad, y que si no le dan alternativa se vuelve a casa, que si qué es esto, … en fin, indignación. Al final le digo que le llevo en coche, pero que me paga la gasolina. Que son 120 kilometrazos. Menos mal que es todo por autopista, y era media horita por trayecto, si llega a ser por carreteras secundarias me hubiese pensado el llevarle.

Total, que ponemos el GPS y nos vamos rumbo a ese pueblo, que por Google maps se veia como una aldea. Y en poco más de media hora, con mi mierda de Twingo, nos plantamos allí. El paraje era desolador, un pueblo en medio de la nada, y lleno de edificios que no eran más que barracones prefabricados. Salimos a buscar el edificio 9906. Y cuando lo encontramos vemos entramos, y sin luz en los pasillos ni nada, nos damos una vuelta por el edificio, y no vemos nada. Salimos. Y entonces este chico ve en la puerta una hoja escrita con boli Bic rojo que ponía en letras grandes VINCENTE. Esa nota es para él, que se llama Vicente. Tenía un número de teléfono. Lo marca y me da el número, ya que él apenas habla inglés, y mucho menos alemán. Curioso al menos cuando se estudia Magisterio de lengua extranjera. Se pone una chica y dice que viene en un minuto.

Llega la chica, y me saluda. Le digo que yo no soy Vicente, que es este chaval. Y desde ese momento me limite a mi labor de traductor. Que si la cocina, que si internet, que si todo…y ya le digo a este chico que me tengo que pirar, que es tarde. El tío me da las gracias, y nos despedimos. Me dice que mañana hablará con su universidad, y que si no le dan solución, se pensará si regresar a casa. No sé, pienso que merece la pena luchar por la experiencia Erasmus, así que espero que no se haya ido aún.

Eso sí, esta ha sido mi buena acción del año. Quizá por todo lo que me ayudaron cuando llegué aquí, se lo mucho que sirve que te ayuden. Pero joder…el pueblo está a tomar por el culo! Lo que le hice es un pedazo de favor, y sin conocerle de nada!

Ziel der Übung Nr. 4 ist, in einer Auswahl von zwei Landkreisen in Rheinland-Pfalz (Bernkastel-Wittlich und Birkenfeld) die vorhandenen Vogelschutz- und FFH (Fauna, Flora, Habitat)-Gebiete hervorzuheben.

Als Grundlage dieser Aufgabe dienten die TK100-Karte von RLP und die Vogelschutzgebiete und FFH – Gebiete in RLP.

Bevor die eigentliche Arbeit an dem Kartenmaterial beginnt werden zunächst die Grundeinstellungen vorgenommen.

Als Titel in den Projekteigenschaften wählt man “Natura 2000″, die Einheit beträgt “Meter” und das Koordinatenbezugssystem ist die “GK-Zone – 31466″.

Der erste Arbeitsschritt beinhaltete das laden der Layer der Tk100 Karte und die der Naturschutz- und FFH-Gebiete in Rheinland-Pfalz. Um mehr Übersicht zu erhalten, wurden die Layer von TK100gl_rlp in LK_RLP, von vsg_rlp_20070111 in VSG_RLP und von ffh_rlp_20070111 in FFH_RLP umbenannt.

Wie schon erwähnt, sollten nur die zwei Landkreise Bernkastel-Wittlich und Birkenfeld behandelt werden.  Durch Rechtsklick auf den Layer LK_RLP konnten diese in der Attribut-Tabelle ausgewählt werden. Die Auswahl ist nun farblich unterlegt und wird wiederrum als einzelne Shapefile abgespeichert (LK_BIR_WIL) und anschließend wieder als Vektorlayer hochgeladen.

Daraufhin wurden die Vogelschutzgebiete der beiden Landkreise anhand des Tools “Research” hervorgehoben.

(Tools–>Research Tools–>Select by location). Als Eingabelayer wählt man die  die “VGS_RLP” und als Übergangslayer die “LK_BIR_WIL”. Es ensteht eine neue Shapefile die man “VSG_BIR_WIL” benennt. Nach dem abspeichert der shp-datei wird diese wieder im Programm als Vektorlayer geladen.

Der nächste Schritt bestand darin, das selbe Tool wieder anzuwenden, mit dem Unterschied, dass anstatt der VGS_RLP die Datei FFH_RLP ausgewählt wurde zur Darstellung der Flora, Fauna und Habitat Gebiete. Die Ausgangsdatei (shp-datei) wird FFH_BIR_WIL genannt und wiederrum nach dem Speichern hochgeladen.

Da sich die Auswahl der VGS- und FFH- Gebiete jedoch über die Kreis-Grenzen hinaus erstrecken wird das Tool  “Clip” (tools–>geoprocessing tools–>clip) angewandt. Dieses hilft ausschließlich die VGS – und FFH- Gebiete innerhalb der Landkreise anzuzeigen. Als Input-Layer diente die shp-Datei “VSG_RLP” und als Clip-Layer die shp-datei  “LK_BIR_WIL”. Nach dem Abspeichern der Datei als “VSG_BIR_WIL_clip” erfolgt wieder das Hochladen als Vektorlayer.

Die selbe Vorgehensweise erfolgt mit den FFH-Gebieten. Die Ausgansdatei wird “FFH_BI_WIL_clip” genannt.

Die nun entstandenen gemeinsamen VSG- und FFH-Gebiete werden abschließend zusammengefügt. Dies wird mit dem Tool “Union” (tools–>geoprocessing tools–>union) erreicht. Als Union-Layer dienen die zuvor erstellten Layer “VSG_BIR_WIL_clip” und “FFH_BIR_WIL_clip”. Die Datei, die aus diesem Zusammenfügen ensteht wird “FFH_VSG_BIR_WIL” benannt.

Der letzte Schritt besteht darin die VSG- und FFH-Gebiete nach ihren Gebietsnummern zu klassifizieren.

Durch Auswählen des Menüpunkts “Eigenschaften” wird nun die Darstellung geändert. Erst wählt man “eindeutiger Wert” an und als Klassifizierungsfeld wird “GEBIETSNUM” ausgewählt. Die Gebiete (mit Zahlen benannt) werden nun farbig unterteilt.

Um eine bessere Übersicht zu erhalten, ist es empfehlenswert eine Transparenz von mind. 40% Prozent einzustellen.

Abschließend wurde per “Schnelldruck”(plugins–>schnelldruck–>schnelldruck) ein A2-Plan mit folgendem Inhalt erstellt:

Anfang 2009 ist es soweit! Das neue Klosterhotel Marienhöh am Ortsrand von Langweiler im Hunsrück öffnet nächstes Jahr seine Pforten für den Gast, der das Besondere sucht. Stille, Natur, Regeneration, Genuss, Wellness, Bewegung, Lebensfreude…

Ein außergewöhnliches 4-Sterne-Haus mit einer unprätentiösen Gastfreundschaft soll es werden – eingebettet in 30.000 m² Natur-Parklandschaft.

Übung 1 – Statistische Auswertung und Visualisierung von Bodenrichtwerten mit Google Earth

Gegenstand der Übung ( Bearbeitungszeitraum 26.06. – 23. 07. 2008 ) ist das Auswerten und die visuelle Darstellung von Bodenrichtwerten. Aus der Bodenrichtwerteauskunft RLP soll hierzu eine oder mehrere Gemeinden ausgewählt werden, es sollen jedoch mindestens 30 Gebiete abgegrenzt werden können. Auch sollen die Gemeinden im direkten räumlichen Bezug stehen.

Mithilfe des Befehls ‘Polygon hinzufügen’ sollen nun die verschiedenen Richtwertzonen abgegrenzt und mit dem entsprechenden Wert versehen werden. Farben und Höhen sind sinnvoll zu wählen.

Die Orte sollen in einem erstellten Ordner abgelegt und der Ordner dann als KMZ-File abgespeichert werden.

Zu dem KMZ-File soll nun eine Urliste und eine Methode zur Auswertung der Urliste dargestellt werden. Auf Minimum, Maximum, Spannweite, Modus, Median, Mittelwert und Ausreißer soll hierbei eingegangen werden. Lage- und Streuungsparameter sollen zugeordnet werden.

Zuletzt werden die Erkenntnisse der Auswertung diskutiert.

Die Übung ist in 2er-Gruppen zu bearbeiten. Abzugeben ist eine sauber beschriftete CD mit der pdf-Präsentation.

In der aktuellen Übung ging es um die Darstellung der Vogelschutz- und FFH-Gebiete (Flora, Fauna, Habitat) insbesondere innerhalb der Landkreise Birkenfeld und Bernkastel-Wittlich.

Wie bei jeder Erzeugung eines GIS-Programmes standen am Anfang die Projekteinstellungen (Eingabe von Projekttitel, Karteneinheit in Meter und Projektion in ‘Gauss-Kruger zone 2′ durch Eingabe ‘31466′).

Darauf folgte das Hochladen der Vektordateien für die Vogelschutzgebiete, FFH-Gebiete und Verwaltungsgrenzen von Rheinland-Pfalz.

Durch das Öffnen des Mapsets ‘Natura2000′ war nun die Erstellung der folgenden Layer möglich. Durch die Module in der Grass-Werkzeugkiste und das Laden der verschiedenen Layer entstanden bestimmte Darstellungen, die im folgenden näher erläutert werden:

Durch das zweite Modul ‘v.extract.where’ wurden die Landkreisgrenzen der Landkreise Birkenfeld und Bernkastel-Wittlich aufgezeigt.

Im dritten Modul ‘v.select.overlap’ ging es darum, die Vogelschutz- und FFH-Gebiete, die von den beiden eben genannten Landkreisen betroffen sind, aufzuzeigen.

Mit Hilfe des Moduls ‘v.overlay.and’ ließen sich die FFH- und Vogelschutzgebiete (oder Teilgebiete derer) innerhalb der beiden Landkreise Birkenfeld und Bernkastel-Wittlich darstellen.

Und zum Schluss entstand durch das Modul ‘v.overlay.or’ die Darstellung der FFH- und Vogelschutzgebiete (oder Teilgebiete derer) innerhalb der beiden Landkreise.

Übung 5 – Quantum GIS V

Gegenstand der Übung ( Bearbeitungszeitraum 03. 06. bis 17. 06. 2008 ) ist das Erstellen bzw. Ergänzen des Mapsets ‘Natura 2000′.

Zunächst wird das Mapset ‘Natura 2000′ geöffnet. Dann sollten die Vektorlayer VSG_RLP (Vogelschutzgebiete in Rheinland-Pfalz), NSG_RLP (Naturschutzgebiete in Rheinland-Pfalz) und LK_RLP (Landkreise in Rheinland-Pfalz) unter Einsatz des GRASS-Moduls v.in.org. hinzugefügt werden.

Mit Hilfe des GRASS-Moduls v.extract.where wird nun unter dem Abfrageausdruck Name = ‘Birkenfeld’ OR Name = ‘Bernkastel-Wittlich’ der Layer LK_BIR_WIL erstellt. Es sind nun die Landkreisgrenzen der Landkreise Birkenfeld und Bernkastel-Wittlich zu erkennen.

Mit dem GRASS_Modul v.select overlap wird zunächst der Layer VSG_BIR_WIL erzeugt. Zu erkennen sind alle Vogelschutzgebiete, die vom Landkreis Birkenfeld, als auch von Landkreis Bernkastel-Wittlich betroffen sind.

Mit Hilfe des selben Moduls ist nun der Layer FFH_BIR_WIL zu erstellen, der alle FFH-Gebiete aufzeigt, die von beiden Landkreisen betroffen sind.

Im nächsten Schritt wird mit dem Modul v.overlay.and (Vektor Intersection) der Layer FFH_BIR_WIL_intersect erzeugt, der alle FFH-Gebiete und Teilgebiete innerhalb der Lankreise Birkenfeld und Bernkastel-Wittlich darstellt.

Ebenfalls mit dem Modul v.overlay.and wird der Layer VSG_BIR_WIL_intersect erzeugt. Es sind nun alle Vogelschutzgebiete und Teilgebiete innerhalb der beiden Landkreise zu erkennen.

Zuletzt wird nun das GRASS-Modul v.overlay.or (Vektor Union) verwendet. Eingefügt wird der Layer FFH_VSG_BIR_WIL, welcher alle FFH- und Vogelschutzgebiete innerhalb der Landkreise Birkenfeld und Bernkastel-Wittlich aufzeigt.

Yesterday I rode the 2008 Berkie Brevet. This was my second experience doing an Oregon Randonneurs ride, having previously done the Snoozeville Populaire. Someone on my team has been into Randonneuring for a while, and others on the team decided to join him for a few of these to see what they were all about. This is likely the last one we’ll do. It was 200km (about 124.27 miles) and they only get longer. The next one is 300km, somewhere around 186 miles. Way to far for me to be riding given my current goals. Well, that’s a pretty good excuse. Actually, it is just plain too far to be riding a bike.

The ride started at 7am from the McMenamins Grand Lodge in Forest Grove. That meant being up at 4:30 (FWIW, the 300k ride starts from the same place at 6am. You do the math.). I left the house roughly on time, and got to the start a little after 6 and got everything ready. My teammates and some other friends (Terry, Phil, Michael, Steve, Hemi) got together, listened to the pre-race announcements (which were mostly doom-and-gloom: basically we were told to expect dogs running out at us around every corner and roads covered with enough gravel that we should be on our mountain bikes), and got rolling right at 7.

Now, before my first Randonneuring event, I had a lot of questions about what this sport was all about. I came to the conclusion that it was a mass start time trial in which drafting was legal. Then I realized that is basically a road race. Phil set me straight, explaining that there is no real winner, and the only thing you get for being first back is bragging rights. Randonneuring is really about supporting yourself during very long rides and being able to find your way around the course. He lied. As we rolled out of the parking lot I was thinking along the lines of a team ride. Go out easy, double pace line, nice and relaxing. Other people had other ideas. Sam took off right from the start, Terry hopped on his wheel, and we were off from a cold start to 24mph in a single line. I guess I should have brought my trainer to warmup before the start.

Going out of Forest Grove there are stop lights. I’m guessing Sam was hoping that by starting out fast he could get ahead and make lights that others would have to stop at. We all got stopped at the same lights, so if that was his plan, it didn’t work out. Only a few miles out of Forest Grove and we had a good size group working together. Early on Hemi wasn’t feeling it and dropped from the group, leaving us with about eight riders. We settled into a reasonable pace and turned on the cruise control. The time and miles were flying by. I kept drinking and eating a little at a time, but was pretty surprised when we rolled into Vernonia almost two hours into the ride. I thought we’d been gone about half that time, and was definitely a bit behind as far as eating went.

I have a Gel Bot bottle that I haven’t used much. For fuel, I like to mix Hammer Nutrition’s Perpetuem into a paste and put that into gel flasks. I tried putting this in my Gel Bot, which didn’t really work out. The paste is too thick to push it out easily – part of the reason why I didn’t each as much early on as I should have, and a great reminder of why you should never try anything new on the day of an event. Anyway, at the first control I decided to finish off the paste in the Gel Bot. As I was squeezing it out I put enough pressure on the bottle to push the valve out all the way and ended up almost chocking myself with the water that suddenly burst out. What a mess.

After getting myself under control I managed to finish off the paste, and then we rolled. I’m not one of those people that can recount every single detail of a ride. We followed the route sheet, found the mailboxes on Keasey Rd, and continued on to Birkenfeld. Somewhere between Vernonia and Birkenfeld Sam broke a spoke, and left our group. As we neared Birkenfeld, I was starting to bonk a bit. I took a pull and Terry mentioned that we were done with the first 100k’s. At that point I was wishing we were doing a 100km ride instead of 200. Shortly after that Terry took to the front, and I started hurting real bad. I clearly hadn’t been eating enough. I ate a bar before we got to Birkenfeld, took electrolytes when we got there, bought a Snickers bar for later in case things got really bad, and we rolled. I was feeling much better, but never really felt 100% again for the rest of the ride.

For most of the way back to Vernonia I sat on the back of our group, letting everyone else rotate through. As I began to feel better I started taking short pulls again. My teammates shouted encouragement, telling me how great I looked and how smooth I was pedaling. I don’t know if they were sincere, since on a ride like that if someone isn’t feeling good you always tell them they look great, even if it isn’t true. Whether they were telling me lies or not, for the most part I had no trouble hanging onto the back, and contributed when I could. From Birkenfeld it took a little over an hour to get back to Vernonia.

I ate and, more importantly, had a chance to just sit down for a few minutes. About 10 minutes after leaving Vernonia it started to rain. We had had dry roads and no rain up to this point, which was unexpected given the forecast. We were lucky to have dry weather for the first 90 miles of the ride. I was worried about the climb out of Vernonia and back to Timber. I shouldn’t have worried. I don’t know if everyone with me slowed down for me on the climb (we took this climb slow on the way out too), but I had no problem staying with them. From the top it was mostly downhill to the last control at Glenwood.

While in Vernonia I realized we had only covered 88 miles. I was still hurting (maybe not physically anymore, but certainly mentally), and was wishing we were closer to home. The 22 miles between there and Glenwood went by pretty fast though. After that last stop, we only had 12 miles left – less than an hour! The road was rolling all the way, and I did struggle up a few of the rollers a bit. I got into real trouble at one point. I had just taken a pull and gone to the back. As I went back, Michael went to the front to put in another monster pull. He had been doing this all day – going to the front, putting in a huge and super-smooth pull, and then dropping back. This time when he brought the pace up a bit I had to accelerate to stay with the group, which hurt. I had to stay with them though, there was now way I was getting dropped now. I could see the blossoming cherry trees at the top of the next roller, which I knew was Forest Grove.

Back into the city, we got stopped at a few lights, and then made it back to Grand Lodge. We made it to the last control at 1:55, 6:55 after we had started (6:29 actually spent pedaling), and we were the first riders back. Apparently a sub-7 hour time over the 200km distance is considered pretty good. I was glad to hear that the guys I was riding with felt about the same as me at the end of the ride. Personally, I’ve never ridden such a long distance at such a fast pace. It was a hard but great day out with good friends. I won’t be riding a distance longer than this any time soon, but I can definitely see the appeal of doing these challenging, long rides.
