I was honored this week when one of my friends asked me to make a centerpiece for her brunch table at the Del Rey Yacht Club!! It was her birthday party and a gorgeous day in Marina Del Rey. Anyone who knows Ellen knows about her passion for rich color. To complement her eclectic taste in everything fabulous I decided to use quite an array of different materials. Here’s a partial list: Red and orange dahlias, dark burgundy peonies, red and white variegated carnations, echinacea, red gomphrina, pink nerine lily, poppy pods, tree of heaven, pink ranunculus, orange ranunculus, orange freesia, mint, pink celosia (coxcomb), and geranium leaves. Oh yeah, and no evil floral foam.

Busy to the point that I really wish I could clone myself… six times might be enough. One of my clones would be assigned the task of blogging, since the real me has not had any time to do more than just think about it. The other day I was looking at the post Bridget had done and my son peeked over my shoulder and said, “You haven’t posted in a long time. Maybe the blog should just be called Bridget.” Well all I can say to that is, I am still alive and thank goodness I have such a good blog partner. (Bridget, I don’t know what I would do without you…. love ya!)

Speaking of people who need to be cloned, my friend Jenny had a birthday the other day. I wanted to get her a gift, but had no idea what to get her (besides her own set of clones…. 15 might be enough for her). Then it came to me… make her a flower arrangement. I mean, who doesn’t love flowers?

I made a trip to Savers, dragging my pal Bridget along, and we scoured the shelves looking for the perfect vessel in which to arrange flowers. Hidden amongst the many treasures (and yes, a lot of junk) I found this pedestal candy dish. We had a dish just like this when I was a kid and I’m sure at one time it probably had a lid (since the one from my childhood did) but no matter, I didn’t want or need a lid. At $4.00 the price was certainly right.

My next stop was Trader Joe’s. I heard they had great pricing on flowers and boy did they ever. I got 3 hydrangeas and a large mixed bouquet for right around 15 bucks. Then it was home to put it all together.

I started by cutting a piece of floral oasis down to size and placing it in a big bowl of water. You know it’s ready when the top of the oasis is level with the surface of the water. Once it had a good soaking, I placed it in my container and then added glass marbles/beads around the outside. Next came the flowers.

I started with the hydrangeas. I only had three and I wanted to be sure they were evenly spaced around the arrangement for full impact. I continued to add flowers, cutting them to create a domed effect, constantly spinning the container to be sure it looked good from all angles.

Once all my store-bought flowers were in place it was looking pretty good, but not great. It needed more! Luckily there’s a field behind my house, so I took a walk out there and gathered up some pretty white wildflowers…. ok… some might actually call them weeds, but just as one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, so it is with weeds vs. wildflowers.

The addition of the whorled milkweed and the Queen Anne’s Lace took the arrangement from nice to fabulous and best of all, wildflowers are free.

I was very happy with the arrangement, and Jenny was delighted. It might not be an army of clones, but a beautiful bouquet of flowers prepared by hand is the next best thing for a birthday or any day at all.

Last year over Christmas, I took my Mom to Hawaii. It was a trip of a lifetime and we both enjoyed the time we spent together and the discovery of our 50th state! We had a great time relaxing, knitting, chatting with other cruise passengers and really seeing some unique sites.

Well, in honor of Mom’s birthday, my sister-in-law Rosie and brother Bob decided to send flowers to recapture that event and celebrate this milestone in Mom’s life. They ordered a bouquet from Hawaii just for her – and boy was she surprised! Now, my arrangement skills are not the best but I think this gift really made a statement.
