A Hippity Hop Rabbit for an adult show?

Ding Dong for a 7-year-old kid’s birthday party?

The Appearing Bra or 20th Century Panties for the bishops’ convention?

Surely I’m exaggerating. The point is, yes, these instances can happen. Maybe in less obvious but nonetheless embarrassing ways. A magic performer brings the wrong tricks for the wrong crowd, and everyone in the audience wears a tinge of red in their faces.

When choosing tricks to perform, think and err on the side of prudence.

Stay magical,

The party went great, no problems whatsoever. The only thing I would say is that regarding the free admission after 15 admitted guests, if the person hosting the party gets there early, which he or she should, he or she would not be able to benefit from this perk. After all, it is their birthday, shouldn’t they be able to party for free? Due to my delayed train ride into Manhattan, I did get the comped admission, but had I gotten there on time I would not have been able to use the comp at all. Other than this small detail everything was done very professionally from planning to execution and I will definitely be recommending you.

Lord, give me strength, give me strength, give me strength. My half an hour of sleep did not prepare

Lord, give me strength, give me strength, give me strength. My half an hour of sleep did not prepare me for all of the work I have to do this morning. On top of payroll and answering a bucketfull of e-mail, I have to fix a million mistakes that have been made since I was last here. Yay!

I’m grumpy, yes. Two disturbing things to discuss today, kiddies, and then we will get to my life. First, look below.

What is that, you ask? I don’t know. It’s this disgusting girl from my high school’s sad attempt at humour. How gross is that belly? Hello, Octomom, you have some competition. It’s horrid. And the thing is, I don’t know who on earth would have sex with this girl to begin with. She’s like a cross between a ninja turtle and the toad character from Mario Kart. With a slathering of poo on her face. I once had to witness her going down on someone in a booth at a dive restaurant called the “Cock ‘N Bull.” Yeah. She’s a bull and she was sucking some cock.

I haven’t been privvy to the whole album because I blocked her on Facebook long ago, somewhere around her tenth attempt at adding me as a friend. But the two pictures my Brown Barbie Princess Mandeep sent me are enough to confirm that she is, indeed, pregnant and massive. How is she getting laid and I’m not? The world is not fair, people.

Speaking of my love life, I met up with someone at a bar last night after my friend set us up on MSN. Oh, the digital age. He seems really nice and I may see him again today. And there are actually some potential good guys coming out of the whole DS experience. That’s why I need to stop blogging about it. Sorry, but I do. If anything major happens, you will know, but I can’t be writing on here when my dates are in on my blog. I can, actually. But I won’t.

Okay, so disturbing thing number two: the movie Precious. I went yesterday with my friend Danita, who is basically Siskel and Ebert wrapped into one with a pair of very thick glasses on top. Really thick. Like, they can double as magnifying glasses. She showed me.

Anyway, the movie is insane. It’s one of those movies where you can’t tear yourself away from the screen even though you kind of want to. The performances were fantastic and Mariah Carey even held her own. They totally added a mustache on her and it made my me happy. It’s a definite must-see, but the material is rough, so prepare to want to slit your wrists for a few hours. It’s heavy.

Not much else. I went to a birthday party on Saturday night and that was pretty fun. Lots of food and it was held in a very cute, very artsy apartment. There was one point where we were taking pictures against the wall and I felt like I was in an American Apparel ad. It was so 80’s porno chic.

Much love, grasshoppers.

So… the last 10 days have been somewhat of a whirlwind. About 10 days ago, Bunny threw me a 3-

So… the last 10 days have been somewhat of a whirlwind.

About 10 days ago, Bunny threw me a 3-week early surprise (30th) birthday party… and I was VERY surprised!!

Me (standing in the background… in black, not the white haired, white shirt guy)… shocked! Who’d a thunk?

Little beknownst to me… our good friend Tabi bought me what I had been asking for this year: A Scanner.

Me and a picture of said “Scanner”.

I had asked for a scanner because I wanted to be able to preserve many many pictures I have of which there are no negatives. Also… I wanted to be able to scan pictures to illustrate some of the things I may talk about on this blog frequently. Also… I wanted to see if I might be able to scan my ass.

So… after the party ended, I happily thanked everyone for their attendance and gifts, I thanked my wife endlessly for throwing me this “surprise” birthday party for me of which I had “no idea what was happening” and off I went installing my “CanoScan LiDE 200″.

It was quite easy actually.

Here was my first scan:

You might be saying, “Awww… what a cute picture of Daddy’s Little Girl!” Well my friends that is actually a picture of Bunny when she was just a tyke herself! What a fascinating thing this “technology” where you can magically take something from the outside world, some black magic happens inside the scanner and then… it’s on your computer! Forever frozen into your hard drive! Unless, of course, your hard drive is dropped from the nearest cliff, slips into a smoldering volcano or used to tip a one-eyed midget cab driver in Chicago… then it’s really gone.

So… I was ready to scan some more things when this happened:

My two brothers passed through on their way to my parent’s house for Thanksgiving and we decided to throw mass amounts of fermented barley and hops down our gullets (as well as some aged grapes in fancy bottles)… making me unable to have a desire to scan much of anything. I also had surgery to replace my eyeballs with tiny shiny crystals.

Then this happened:

This is Daddy’s Little Girl several days later at my Mom and Dad’s playing in leaves. I was too occupied with keeping her cute to worry about scanning anything.

Then this happened:

Thanksgiving. I was too fat to even move.

So after all this… I was able to then focus on scanning some stuff.

First, this cartoon my mother cut our for me that I thought was extremely funny and appropriate:

Seeing that I have OCD and all…

Then she gave me this cartoon that I thought was funny too:

Seeing that I’m a huge fan of AMP Energy Drink and all…

Then I scanned this:

That would be my face. Not my ass as I had originally planned… although some might call me an “ass-face”.

Anyway… much more to come this week of more subtance…

Thanks for hanging with me through Thanksgiving.

“You forgot who TIA is Ricky? smfh…”

Now that 50 Cent’s disappointing first week numbers are official, rival Rick Ross is now claiming victory in their 2009 feud.

In a recent concert for DJ Khaled’s birthday, Ross proclaimed full credit for 50 Cent’s lowest debut week (161,000) of his previously multi-platinum career.

“So we celebrating my n***a birthday, but we’re also celebrating the demise of a p***y. R.I.P. to the donkey, we buried him,” Ross stated on stage with Khaled. “It feel good, n***a. Don’t look surprised, you knew we was gonna do it. There’s only one record that can describe the feeling.”

Concluding his victory speech, Ross went into “This Is the Life,” the fourth single from his 2008 gold sophomore LP Trilla.

In January, Rick Ross began his feud with 50 Cent courtesy of “Mafia Music,” where he ridiculed the Queens’ emcee about his relationship with his child’s mother, and the controversy surrounding the fire destruction of his Fort Dix, Long Island mansion.

50 Cent retaliated with songs (“I’ll Be the Shooter”) and satirical cartoon clips (Officer Ricky Series). Also, the G Unit CEO enlisted Ross’ estranged son’s mother Tia Kemp to disparage Ross in clips and an autobiographical book.

DJ Khaled was brought into the conflict as well when the Queens mogul had entourage members film Khaled’s mother unknowingly at her job (“A Psychic Told Me”). 50 Cent would later express regret for the act, after receiving negative responses from media and fans for the viral clip’s allusions to violence.

Earlier this month, 50 and Floyd Mayweather further mocked Ross by taking pictures with his children after Kemp had brought them to the rapper’s mansion.

At press time, Rick Ross is working on his fourth album Teflon Don, set to be released in Spring 2010.

Yesterday we hosted a 2 post birthday party and marathon congratulatory party at our place. Also we toasted farewell and good wishes to a dear friend of ours who is leaving for grad school (speech pathology). The party was attended by some close friends of ours and also a friend who shared in the birthday celebrations with me, we were born a day apart.

Anh prepared an amazing dinner, which a not so sober me, the photographer failed to adequately document , Anh’s delightful dinner menu included, salmon cakes, meat balls, noodles, chicken wings and potato with veggies. The food was delicious.

As promised in my invitation it was a drink fest last night. Many caipirinha’s were served. I also made rum punch which always favors with my friends. At the end of the night I served over 8+ mixes of kamikaze. I think that finally did me in .

The Party started at 7pm and lasted until about 3:30am, so I would conclude that it was a great success.

What could possibly make Marley Majcher’s (AKA the party goddess) heart sing when she has seen and done it all?

Answer: an abandoned warehouse!

Tucked away in an obscure part of downtown Los Angeles warehouse district is the perfect setting to weave her magic and transform a 10,000 sq.ft. dilapidated warehouse into a magical space celebrating the four seasons, fall, winter, spring and summer.

I was invited to the fun and festivities and joined her the day before the party to share in the set up and transformation. Imagine a nondescript entrance transformed by an awning covering a red carpet and potted trees welcoming guests with a gobo light on the wall that said ”Yes, you are in the right place!”. A contemporary, all white welcome/check in area greeted guests with lit bars and varying heights of Jeffrey Latham inspired floral arrangements.

Inside, each room depicted a season. You first entered fall” – full of pumpkins and fall decor with a life-size “Mayflower” ship anchoring the room.

“Summer” was all beach and surf boards, picnic tables and palm trees. The loading dock was a perfect stage for the 8 piece band that rocked the night away. A raised platform made for a great area to add striped awnings covering beach chairs to sit and watch the action on the dance floor.

“Winter” greeted you with a life-size gingerbread house. Shots of white chocolate Godiva and vodka kept you warm while you waited your turn for a hunky santa and his elf photo-op. A winter vignette featuring a sled and real pony delighted the children and completed the winter wonderland!

Upstairs, “Spring” was an oasis of calm. Chirping birds provided a quieter area to enjoy butterfly displays, neck massages, and lipstick sampling from an exclusive brand sold in boutiques.

Just when you thought your senses were full and the party was in full swing, out appeared a scarecrow on stilts cutting a swath of Michael Jackson moves on the dance floor. Dancing in the midst of flying beach balls and dancing guests, this scarecrow makes Gumby seem stiff as a board!

A sumptuous buffet included 3 different kinds of turkey, stuffing and mac’n cheese in various flavors. And for dessert, why settle for one birthday cake when you can have…- 4 – one for each season! A witch and her cauldron, a cheeseburger, a peppermint patty and a layered cake with flowers.

How about that for celebrating in style!

Happy Holidays!

Things don’t always go well in a show. Unless you are a real magician, something wrong will happen during one of your performances. If not today, then one day.

If I sound like a doomsayer, it’s because I just watched the movie 2012 when it hit Philippine theaters last week.

But that’s another story.

My point is, no matter how well you know your act, sooner or later, something will not work well as planned that will lead to snafus.

I had a really bad experience a couple of years ago. I devoted time and energy in building and rehearsing a new act. Despite my extensive preparations, it still bombed big time on its first performance.

The flop was so devastating I wanted to resign from the human race. The only thing that kept me from hanging myself was the need to save my magician’s rope for the next show.

Stay magical,

“Here Comes My Girl”

November 25th, 2009

Thanksgiving is a holiday about family, which when deployed in television does one of three things. The first is to emphasize the cohesiveness of a particular group of characters who work seamlessly when brought into the same setting. The second is to emphasize the sheer chaos that results from the show’s personalities coming together, to either comic or dramatic purposes. The third, meanwhile, is to demonstrate that the show is a convoluted mess where bringing the characters together is a futile exercise that will fail to provide interesting television.

What’s helpful for ABC’s 9pm comedies is that both of them have built their identity around the idea of family, to the point where bringing the gang together is like second nature to the two shows. Cougar Town has really started to charm me as of late, and “Here Comes My Girl” is yet another fine episode that brings together this group of individuals into a family of sorts that’s just an enormous amount of fun to watch bounce off of each other. And “Fizbo” is perhaps my favourite Modern Family episode yet, taking advantage of the chaos at the heart of this family and bringing things to a satisfying (and also sort of sweet) conclusion.

It made for a really comforting hour of television comedy, which is what the timeslot has been providing (on average) all season.

Perhaps the strongest individual element of the episodes were the show’s fully taking advantage of the strengths of a pair of supporting characters, in this instance Dan Byrd’s Travis and Eric Stonestreet’s Cameron. The two characters have been strong overall, but this episode allowed them to take things to another level. With Travis, this means going beyond his sarcasm and awkwardness to the heart of his relationship with his mother, resulting in Jules losing her sense of self-control and failing miserably at being anything close to “cool.” The result is a really honest, but funny, story of a son coming to terms with the role his mother will play in his adult life, and while it had its broader comic moments (the balloon gag) and its quippy one-liners (the rolling pin would make me feel self-conscious too) it was more about that moment at episode’s end (set to, thanks to the sleuthing skills of Mrs. Sepinwall, Noah and the Whale’s “Give a Little Love,”) where Jules and Travis share a quiet moment preparing Thanksgiving dinner. It was a wonderful piece of acting from Cox and Byrd, and totally sells that Travis is more well-adjusted than Jules but is nonetheless believably awkward. It was a heartfelt and funny little story that really sold me on the relationship.

As for the genius of Fizbo, I don’t really know where to start. Stonestreet’s Cameron has become the show’s breakout character: while Ty Burrell’s Phil stole the pilot (Lion King moment notwithstanding, even, I’d argue), Cameron has been able to show more dimensions and has a slightly better foil in Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s Mitchell. Fizbo was a stroke of genius because of both the sheer commitment of Stonestreet and some legitimately amazing directing choices. Look at the dramatic angles the show uses to introduce the character as Cameron puts on the nose/eye makeup, or the amazing shot of Fizbo’s foot stepping out of the car when Mitchell’s about to get attacked at the gas station. The show worked to create the legend of Fizbo, and while Stonestreet was nailing the smaller moments (like the “something”/”nothing” gag with Jay) the direction was establishing just how epic this ass-kicking, balloon-animal machine really is. It didn’t have the emotion of Cougar Town’s storyline, but it didn’t have to: who needs sentiment when you have legend?

Cougar Town was less interested in creating such a huge sense of destiny, but I thought the comic rhythms the show has established in recent weeks were working in overdrive: there were a number of fantastic scenes with Ellie and Laurie playing off of one another, the dynamic between the three men was as strong as it always is, and both broader scenes (the “Hi Kylie” song and the basketball games) were executed to their full effect. I also like that they came right out and pointed out that both Bobby and Grayson are at the point in their lives where Jules is the perfect woman for them, and that they used this for both comic and dramatic effect. There was a joke to be had in Grayson’s suggestion of buying it deep inside and avoiding it, but it’s also kind of true, and the characters have a strong enough dynamic for me to buy things going slowly. Some shows I’d wish that they’d get the usual storylines out of the way, but I’m so enjoying just hanging out with this family that a Thanksgiving dinner can simply hint at some things before just being about spending time together.

And perhaps the best thing about “Fizbo” was that this same theme wasn’t hammered into our heads. The conclusion did end on a note that Luke got a great birthday after all, one where he (and not the holiday) was the center of attention and where the whole family came together, but it came to be through a series of hilarious circumstances. After complaining about V’s in media res opening this week, it was great to see one where the views into the hospital scene made us on alert for potential maladies, and the result was a lot of brilliant comic tension as you had both legitimate threats (the scorpion, Dylan’s mayo allergy, the crossbow) and hilarious phobias (Phil’s fear of clowns, which was a great piece of acting from Ty Burrell) pulling us in various different directions. When things eventually go terribly wrong, with Manny becoming the great hero (“My dog’s still in there” was a cute touch) only to have Luke end up breaking his arm after slipping on Claire’s “comb sheaves” beads was the sort of wonderfully fitting climax that the show should do more often. The show earned that scene in the hospital in a way that previous episodes haven’t earned their tidy endings, and the result was a really great half-hour of television.

Overall, two families I’d be glad to have Thanksgiving dinner with, so long as there’s no crossbows involved and Fizbo is invited.

Cultural Observations

Want to take this chance to wish all of my American readers a Happy Thanksgiving – sure, it’s not as good as the real CANADIAN Thanksgiving, but I hear it’s still a pretty big deal and all that jazz.

There were a number of great Fizbo sight gags, but I think the battle for me is the post-badass novelty clock pullout and the running away from the scorpion like a small child. So different, and so amazing.

Although there were a few too many Michael Scott style “Make joke and mug to camera” moments for Phil in this one, I liked that the show continued last week’s trend of Phil making fun of Claire as opposed to vice-versa.

Andy’s “I’ve got a secret” heartburn was a fun bit of comedy from Ian Gomez, and Christa Miller is as lovely as always in twisting the knife.

My one question from the show: while Bill Lawrence’s usual signature touches (the use of music, the oddball comedy, the physical comedy, etc.) are all in place along with a sense of sweetness that the show was lacking in the pilot, I do wonder if the show is interested in investigating actual sadness or tragedy at all. Scrubs, as a medical show was forced to confront it, but these characters are relating to the point where something happening to a distant relative could be played emotionally, but it definitely feels more resistant than Scrubs (or, for that matter, Spin City) to the idea. Just a thought.

I know of some magicians in the Philippines who revamp their entire magic show every year.

I envy these magicians. I want to change my shows, too, but my efforts are thwarted by the following reasons:

Changing the entire show requires huge investment in time and money.

Changing the entire show in one fell swoop will result in a less-developed program that may not be as entertaining as the current show.

The clients (most of them hired me because they have seen my show) would insist to see the same act.

The last reason is the strongest reason that, for a period of time, I’m stuck with my current show.

The feeling is like that of being marooned in a desert—although I have not been to a desert before, so I don’t really know how it feels to be stranded there.

I suppose it is not artistically rewarding to be doing the same show over and over again. However, it can be good business. In Broadway the longer a show runs, the more profitable it is for the producers. Still, one day, a show, no matter how big a blockbuster, will exhaust its appeal. People will not come anymore to watch it. And the production folds up.

Magic in the Philippines is a small industry with overcrowded performers. A magic show has shorter run than Cats or Phantom of the Opera. The clients’ point of exhaustion is shorter for a magic show.

So over years of performing, I have found a way—a middle ground—out of this stalemate. I don’t make wholesale changes to my show. I merely add and drop a trick here and there. Several months later, I have a show that is somewhat different from my show at the start of the year.

Stay magical,
