Karen gave Neil a photography voucher for a photo shoot of his family for his birthday.  His two elder daughters came up from Wales for the sitting at Neil and Karen’s home in Urmston, South Manchester.  I took lots of photographs of various combinations of family members.  My favourite is the one where the Welsh family members are cheering as if Wales has scored a try at Rugby.

Another monday, another week’s worth of work. In order to continue our new series and to make this day a bit more agreeable for you, we present our funny Monday stuff Vol.2. Enjoy!

Oh yes Rob, me too! So who’s you’re favorite? I pick Arielle, the one who made me grow my hair out when I was a little girl. Never had the guts to dye it red though. Or Jasmine from Aladdin, another one of my favorites. We could go out to a costume paty together dressed up as Disney princesses. Although I’d rather if you were the prince… Think about it and then let me know, please. Just call, I know you got my number.

Okay Zelda, this one’s for you. Because I know how much you love Jasper. So just look at it the next two weeks a bit longer, then print it out and place it over your bed. I know you will… No, just kidding of course. Zelda never would. No, honestly, trust me. She wouldn’t.

Oh yeah Bella, we forgot to tell you. It’s Rosalie’s present. It’s a homemade bomb. So you better not open it. Or wait, the only other persons in close vicinity are vampires and therefor wouldn’t get hurt. So if you open it and fade out of the story, maybe Edward will end up with me… Why not? Hey, don’t worry. Just go on and try it out. It’s a birthday present, so just open it!

Yep Jake, you’re right. You may have developed really really well. You may have the best abs ever. You may have the most shirtless moments in a teen-movie ever. You may have extraordinary martial arts skills. You may have the ability to say “do me NOW” with your eyes in every photoshoot… But you still don’t get the girl. You could have me though, if you want… Just saying.

Yeah Abu, me too! Maybe if you hand me over that wishing lamp… You could send it over with the magic carpet Aladdin has… Because what could be better than having a wishing lamp and a magic carpet? Okay, having Edward Cullen and Jacob Black maybe. But other than that?

Okay, now that I had my Monday laughs I think I’m ready to go to work now. At least that’s what I try to tell myself because I got to go anyway…

Ok…so this post doesn’t have anything to do with fabric or yarn but it DOES have to do with all things handmade.

My birthday was this past Saturday and this is by far the best present I’ve received in a long time.  My dude made me a coffee table!

I recently decided I wanted our apartment to feel like an Urban Rustic Cabin and this fits perfectly…plus it’s handmade and built nearly for free!

Late in the summer we found a pallet in great condition near the dumpster where he works.  Of course we HAD to pick it up, not knowing yet what it would become.  A few months later I found he’d planned on making me the most perfect coffee table.  Note the split level design: The lower ledge can be used either for a foot rest or as a place to rest drinks while the upper part is perfect to keep the computer out of the way. (Our computer is our TV..so this works perfectly.)

To fill in gaps he used wood he found laying around the basement, but it still retains a very rustic feel and I think it’s perfect!  I had yet to find the perfect coffee table and this fits the bill wonderfully. It’s nice to be with a guy that’s crafty and resourceful!

It’s tat time of year again where I get all discombobulated on what to get my hubby!!! It’s so frustrating ok to buy a present for a man especially mine!! At the end of the day I’m just worried that he wont like it which will make me feel miserable that I ruined his Bday for him  !!! I know la he wont say it to my face that he hates the pressie but just an inch of dissatisfaction from his face will make my heart go tumbling down to the grown :| Aiyooo I cant stop being all emotional la … WHY CANT I BE A MAN!!!???

Anyways I actually baked him a choc cake with cream cheese frosting last night which didn’t turn out that bad. Was quite edible thanks to the cream cheese BUT of course I was quite disappointed with the outcome of the cake. So no more attempting choc cakes d. I’ll stick to cheese cakes and other normal cakes la.

As for his present, nanti kita akan tunggu dan lihat ya …

Art that only a mom/photographer could love...

With the holiday season fast approaching, some parents are wondering, “Should I buy my kid a camera for Christmas?” While it’s ridiculous for one person to tell another what they should or shouldn’t do for their child, (although it’s done all the time,) I am going to tackle this question by answering it with my experience.

I have three children:  a 12, 9 and 5-year-old, and they all have access to cameras.  They all love them.  They don’t have a DSLR like mine; theirs are mere point and shoots.  I share the Lumix with my oldest.  The middle one has a hundred dollar something, we bought last Christmas.  And the little bittle has a pre-school type camera, a$50 something and my iPhone.  (Sometimes when I’m busy working, I lend my phone to keep her occupied.)

The decision to purchase a camera is kind of a big one.  Do you really want to spend all that money on something that could get lost or broken? They are kids after all.  Kids lose and break things.  But then I weighed something else… photography is something we ALL can do together.  There are so few things in this world that whole families can equally participate in and enjoy.  We can’t competitively play sports together.  We usually can’t find a movie that we all like to watch together.  But photography… we ALL can go out and shoot.

Of course, their images don’t turn out like my images… I’m a pro.  But interestingly enough, I love looking at my children’s images.  It’s great fun to see what they find worthy of shooting.  For instance, the girls have a million pictures of our dog.  My son, the eldest, shot a picture of a Copperhead snake on our recent vacation in the Smoky Mountains.  (He also warned the nearby tourist of its presence, saving them from nearly stepping on it.)

I love their kids eye view perspective.  The shots from the ground up to mommy, or the shots of their feet dangling over the car seat are absolutely precious.

Photography teaches you to see the world around you with new eyes.  It forces you to stop and look… something that perhaps in our modern world of hustle and bustle, we don’t do enough of.  So whether you purchase a camera for your kids or not, well that’s up to you.  Only you as a parent can ultimately decide what is right for your family.  But from my experience, it was a good choice, and continues to be a good choice.

Last week I had the pleasure of photographing a lovely family in Chorlton, Manchester.  The main aim of the photo shoot was to get a fantastic photograph of Sophie, Tony and their two gorgeous children to give to Granny for her 70th birthday.  Their baby boy is just three months old so it was an opportunity to get some first photos of him as well as some more pictures of their happy, three-year-old daughter.

The little girl laughed and smiled all the way through the photo shoot.  The baby was just bemused by it all, but he was impeccably behaved!

I have carried the same Louis Vuitton red epi leather wallet for over a decade—that is, I’ve bought the exact same wallet at least three times. Once, a brand new one was stolen off my George Nelson Walnut Roll Desk at the LA Times (the desk was an original from the 60s- some of the furniture at the newspaper was AMAZING), so my parents took pity and kindly bought another to replace it that year for my birthday, which brings the total to four. And I would have gone that route a fifth time, except that LV discontinued the simple, sleek design (square billfold, with three credit card slots on the left and a discreet coin purse inside on the right). I’m not crazy about wallets with a lot of hardware and compartments, especially cumbersome coin purses. So, for someone’s special day, my lovely and generous husband gave me this absolutely gorgeous Bottega Veneta classic woven leather wallet in lilac leather. It is soft beyond belief and the prettiest color. And it features a very discreet coin purse. So dare I say, change has never looked better!

So as you may or may not know, it was my birthday last month. It wasn’t a landmark age in the traditional sense, but it was a number that required a present a little bit more special than the some of the ages I’ve left behind. It’s also likely that this is the last age that I will receive something special until I reach those big round even numbers that follow (yuck – no offence!). The day itself was pretty lacklustre, aside from a lovely dinner with the boy. I didn’t receive any cards or presents. [The boy is off the hook as he doesn't give cards and his present was held up by Royal Mail.] My Mum however was the cause of much disappointment. No card, no money, no present. She did mumble something in the morning about an IOU, but parents don’t really follow up on those, in the same way that kids don’t when we borrow money.

Anyway, last weekend (12 days after my actual birthday), she invited herself over for dinner and asked the boy to come along too. She arrived and we drove round the block and they both jumped out of the car and shouted SURPRISE! Sitting in front of me was a cute little car… and it was for me! Pretty exciting stuff, I know.

The only problem is I haven’t passed my driving test. In fact, I haven’t been learning since I was nineteen. However, I see that as a minor drawback because I do know how to drive, I just haven’t yet passed the test. So this week, after booking my theory test (yes, it is that bad), I started thinking what accessories I needed to enhance my experience behind the wheel. Sunglasses, of course!

I’m a fan of oversized styles, they are fun and make me feel a little celebrity-esque and Kate Beckinsale seems to like them too.

Nicole Richie usually has good sunglasses too. She single-handedly helped Christian Dior relaunch some vintage styles a couple of years back. Luckily, my Mum had a pair, so I’ve been rocking them for a while now and they are loyal to me.

Rihanna loves sunglasses – she is rarely spotted without a pair. Conveniently, we have a similar haircut so I had a look at some of the styles she has rocked and found two that will be top of my Christmas list for sure.

Loving these simple Gucci frames. They are functional, cool and chic. A slight twist on the traditional Ray Ban but I love it!

These would be my second pair. I love the shape of these sunglasses. They have a bit more character than the run of the mill oversized styles.

I guess the right thing to do would be to treat myself to one pair once I pass my theory test and then treat myself to another pair once I pass the practical driving test that way I’ll be more than prepared for the road when I get behind the wheel. Bring on the road trips!

Do you purchase more gifts for giving at Christmas and on brithday’s online or in a store?

I saw this Temair Throw on the Lion Brand website and thought it would make the perfect gift for my mother-in-law. It’s her birthday in November {and no fear, she doesn’t read my blog!} – also notice how I’ve put the original picture here from the Lion Brand website so all and sundry can see how mine will look nothing like it harhar. So I bought the pattern and the yarn and this is what happened…

There are four circles that need to be made {5 of the largest and 10 each of the rest} and then tassles for each end. Then they have to be joined together, of course. I’ve used a thick yarn to give it a chunky feel – Moda Vera ’shiver’ in cream. I’ve completed the circles which look like this, and I haven’t woven the ends in yet so these are pretty raw:

The plan: I will be making the tassles this weekend, and then joining it all together next week. Of course the most important part of The Plan is to have it done in plenty of time for her birthday in case it doesn’t work out and I have to race out and buy her something {harhar}. That was nervous laughter. Nervous because I rarely follow a pattern, so it’s always interesting when I do.

Very busy in the bodgery making chairs.  I’m using a chair stick to make sure the set of six matches.  This is a stick with all the relevant measurements marked on it – height of front leags, where the rung mortises are, splat height and widths.  I find it very useful, it was used in days of yore too.  It’s very quick using a gauge instead of measuring everything.  When I had 12 asylum seekers visiting in summer to help make a charge of logs up for the charcoal kiln I made a length stick and a thickness gauge, made it very easy for everybody, and overcame any language difficulties.  Mind you it didn’t stop one guy from insisting on carrying about 1.5 cwt logs on his shoulder and running with them.  He had been in the Somali army and had to run with sand bags to make defences when the other side were advancing, how easy we have it!

The autumn colours were rather drab, as it was wet most of the day (but dry under the tarp in the bodgery).  Then the sun came out and the colours were rather fine.

Mind you, today it was very wet and windy all day and the River Wharfe rose quite a lot quite quickly.

Never mind day indoors tomorrow learning how to be a tutor – for free.

Because it has everything in one unit, it’s neat and can fit into smallish space. It was pretty easy to put together (so my husband said ). Despite being recommended for age 3+, Isabella is loves it, although at the moment probably prefers playing with the utensils, and fruit and vegetables we got to go with it. It should definitely keep her interested for several years to come. Price wise, it is in the mid-range for wooden kitchens.

Herbie has had two birthday parties so far (one with friends Friday night, one with family on Saturday), and still has one more to go when his parents get back from out of town. 

He seems to be enjoying all the celebrations (I mean, who wouldn’t, if you get to play Barnyard Bingo?):

Also, I don’t know if I mentioned it, but I MADE A PIE.  And it was… awesome.  Truly.  I may have even gotten a little obnoxious about it, because I could not eat two bites in a row without declaring my pie “crazy delicious.”  But only because it WAS.

Then Herbie opened his presents, and was very befuddled  to find alphabet letters (from our fridge set and Moo’s puzzle) in boxes from me, my sister, and my mom and dad. 

Birthday Challenge!  Put the letters in the correct order to reveal your present!  Herbie struggled a little with this:

I don’t know which is worse, that he thought we were giving him a charged particle wearing a cozy sweater, or that he thought we didn’t know how to spell “knitted.”

But then!

…And he hasn’t been to work since.

So far, so good.  It performs as advertised, and I actually see us using this!

Cheeseball’s birthday is on November 15th, so as an early b-day present, we now have the awesomeness of an – iPod Touch! The only awkward thing is, though we bought an 8GB one, it says there is only 7GB when we install it with the computer. Oh well.

As the Apple Store states, this is a great iPod, pocket computer, and portable gaming all in one device. All with an amazing touch screen technology.

When doing things like listening to music, you can tilt the screen to change the view from portrait to landscape, and vice versa. There are also lots of other cool features, like the Calendar, Calculator, and Notes. However, a lot of them also require an internet connection (such as YouTube, Safari internet browser, or the iTunes Store), and we don’t have Wi-Fi at our home. :/

Using the internet (on our computer or the Wi-Fi connection at the clubhouse near our home), you can buy app[lications] from the App Store to play with. We mostly get the free ones (we recommend iChess and Fastlane Lite!), but some apps also need the internet. Click here to learn more about this brilliant device.

In the future, we might even review some of the apps we have. For now, of course, we’re off to play with our POTATOTASTIC iTouch!

Gordon Brown has said he thinks X-Factor’s twin contestants John and Edward Grimes are “not very good”. The double act has provoked the ire of many of the viewing public but has been voted into the latter stages of the ITV1 singing contest show. The prime minister told Manchester radio station Key 103 he did not rate the twins but added that some of the other contestants were “really good”. Mr Brown has declared himself a “fan” of X-Factor. Questioned by an audience of mostly young people in Manchester, the prime minister said : “I don’t think they’re very good”.

‘Top dog’ He added: “There are some really good people on X-Factor. It’s really good. And I know it’s competing with Strictly Come Dancing”. The question came from teenage actress Brooke Vincent, who plays Sophie Webster in Coronation Street, who was in the audience. She said to him: “You’re like, quite high up there. You’re like a top dog, aren’t you? So you could like ring in, and say ‘we don’t want ‘em’.” To laughter, the prime minister then asked the audience : “Does anyone want John and Edward to win X Factor?” …..Only two said yes. With their happy singing style. John and Edward – commonly known as Jedward – have divided opinion. Judge Simon Cowell has said: “If they win, it will be a complete and utter disaster. I’d probably sulk for about six months [and] get on a very fast plane out of the country.” On the show, the twins’ progress is being overseen by judge Louis Walsh.
