I always go crazy for some prime vintage collectible cars, and us much as modification is at a premium here at SEMA, there’s no shortage of restored-to-stock showpieces. Here are three more prime candidates for my garage when I hit the 10-million-dollar jackpot here at Vegas.

This is a 1964 Chevrolet Biscayne 2 door sedan. Pretty plain isn’t it? Don’t let the understated looks fool you–this puppy is stuffed with a 425-hp, 409 Cubic Inch V-8, backed with a 4 -speed manual. If you look inside you’ll see that it didn’t even come with a radio, and it’s so original that it’s even rolling on bias plies. It will be going to the Barrett Jackson Auction this January, and should bring in big money.

Speaking of Barrett Jackson, take a look at this 1967 Corvette Stingray Convertible. This little red Corvette is equipped with the 435 Horsepower, 427 Cubic Inch V-8, which is also backed up with a 4 Speed Stick. The Red Line tires really add to the vintage look, as does the sidepipes, and Rally Wheels. This has the triple carburetor set-up, and has an engine compartment so clean, you could eat from it.

Last Car I want to show you is this marvelous 1937 Ford DeLuxe Wagon. It comes equipped with the famous Ford Flathead V-8, 3 Speed Shifter, and look at those vintage wire wheels. This was shown at the Lexol Auto Care Booth. I like wagons, but I know they are not for everyone.

According to the official Alta Vista South HOA website, Alta Vista South is comprised of 214 upscale single family homes. Among other things, the community website offers a calender of community events, information regarding the property management company (South Coast Property Management in Costa Mesa), and the CC&R’s, By-Laws, and other legal documents available for download.

The Alta Vista South Homeowner’s Association is made up of 5 tracts of homes: HQT, Bel Maison, William Lyon Homes, Biscayne, and Highpoint. Below is a list of each tract with general spec’s for each floor plan. Actual floor plans are available upon request by contacting Nic Petrossi at (714) 272-3646 or email npetrossi@yahoo.com

NIC PETROSSI, Prudential California Realty (714) 272-3646

Plan Four 5 Beds 3 Baths 3,192 SF 3 Car Garage

Bel Maison architecture is unique in that the builder Saddleback Pacific Homes, incorporated French Chateau elements. Passers-by will often refer to these homes as the “Castle Homes” due several of the homes having a castle-like cylindrical turret and stone edifice.

Streets in Bel Maison are: Underhill, Dickinson, Brady, Lowe, Newman, Hunt, and Olson. (Named after Placentia City Council members around the time of construction).

Residence Three (2) 6 Beds 3 Baths 3,354 SF 2 Car Garage

Summarily, the difference in square footage between a Residence Two and a Residence Two (alt) for example, is due to either the absence or presence of a 3 Car Tandem garage. The area used for the 3rd car is optional and if the home does NOT have the tandem, it will have more square footage.

Streets in Lyon Homes: Torrey Pines, Quail Run, Augusta, and Spyglass.

I’ve been trying to experiment with tilt-shift photography for a long time. I should correct that, tilt-shift post-processing. I don’t own a tilt shift lens or one of those Lensbaby lenses either. So I fake it using Adobe Photoshop and its lens blur filter. There are many tutorials online that will show you how to reproduce this effect. There are two other photographs on my blog that have received the same treatment. The trick I’ve learnt is to shoot something from a higher vantage point. This allows you to single out elements and use the effect along that.

The original photograph was shot in Miami from my hotel room. I found a flyover and was able to close in the frame tight enough to hold the bus and also show the street in the background. The other photographs that I have faked tilt shift for are Tilt Shift and Tilted Washtenaw.

While I was in Miami last weekend, I was lucky enough to have my room facing a building undergoing construction. There wasn’t much activity that early in the morning but it was still worth a shot. I was hoping to get a much more vivid reflection on this photograph. However, the reflection came out to be much darker than I thought it would be. This forced me to switch into black & white where I could better utilize the dark glass in the contrast with the bright concrete roof.

EXIF: f/8, 1/60sec, 135mm, ISO 200, Sony DSLR A-200, Sony G 70-200mm f/2.8

Post Processing: I edited the levels in Adobe Photoshop to bring out the end black and white tones. I then processed it in black & white keeping the yellow channel at 0% and modifying the rest of the channels.

This house in Stiltsville in Biscayne Channel, in Miami, Florida, had it’s yellows stand out even more as the falling sun made the water appear surreal and shine under the bird’s wings, while the sky looked very pale powder blue.

I have been dreaming about fishing constantly lately. I actually got to go out again today into the gulf stream and slam some dolphin with a few friends from work and one of their son’s.

We were on the water by 6:30 AM (an hour later than planned) and filled the live well with baby jack and pinfish. Allen (the kid) had fun just catching bait. That’s one of the cool things about catching your own bait with kids, they get to participate.

We ran from Bayfront south to Pumpkin Key, then out through the cut into the ocean side, past the reefs and into open water. Immediately, we were in blue water and found weeds. They didn’t hold any fish though.

We decided to go deeper so we headed about 10 more miles east to roughly 700 feet of water. We scanned the seas for weeds and found them finally. Trolling north, the weed patches were full of dolphin (mahi-mahi), triple tail, bait fish, and shark.

I put out the planer and Tony put out two rigged ballyhoo and we were on fish immediately. It was like total chaos, fish flopping all over the boat, blood everywhere. We lost two nice dolphin trying to keep the school close, but overall it was successful for a bunch of rookies.

One crazy thing happened. In the middle of the school of dolphin was what appeared to be a cobia. I threw a jig at it and boom it was on. I fought it pretty hard and it wasn’t until it got pretty close that I realized it was a reef shark. I got it close enough and Tony gaffed it. That sucker was trying to bite everyone! It was great.

We ran north to the Pacific Light and found more weeds. By this time it was around noon so it was HOT. That is usually not a great thing for dolphin.

Regardless, we got a hit after trolling a large patch of weed and it had two followers. We got on the other one too, and we ended up with two more decent gaffer mahi in the boat.

After this, it was getting hot and the bite was off so we headed in to Caesar’s Creek for some snapper. We got about 12 mangrove snapper and I caught one more shark that we released.

Overall, for a bunch of rookies (with the exception of Tony) we did pretty good. With some preparation, I know we can really mop it up next time.

BTW, even though I am sunburned and exhausted, the shark steaks are in my fridge right now. Grilled shark will be on the menu tomorrow night. Now we will see who bites who!

South Beach, Miami

Jane has successfully defended her master’s thesis, reflecting on her experiences as community organizer for the Aetas. She and Bruce finally left for Oregon where they will stay with family until September, when they leave for the Philippines for good. On their last weekend, we went on a road trip to South Florida with Ben, one of my research colleagues; Jane wanted to see the Everglades before she left. It is the largest subtropical wilderness in the US, stretching from Miami in the Atlantic to Naples in the Gulf of Mexico. We drove down I-75 from Gainesville, changed to the Florida Turnpike at Orlando, and stayed there until it merged with I-95 north of Miami. The turnpike and freeways around Orlando are set up like snares with toll roads to bag as much tourist dollars from visitors at Disney, their booths, manned mostly by the elderly with a diligence for doubloons worse than buccaneers in the Pirates of the Caribbean. We stayed in a cheap motel near Biscayne Boulevard, north of town, that reminded me of Timog Avenue in Quezon City. We were right next to Black Gold, an all-black strip club.

Shark Valley Trail (from Google Earth)

We stayed away from Flamingo, the more touristy destination on the southern tip, and instead crossed the length of the Everglades, westward, along the Tamiami Trail (Highway 41). A third of the way, before the road bent north to the Big Cypress National Preserve, we made a stop at Shark Valley, near Miccosukee. There we rented bikes ($6.50/hour!) to follow the 15-mile looped trail. It was already half past eleven, not exactly the best time of the day to be out in the sun, but Ben, being a big troublemaker, was intent on biking instead of taking the tram tour ($15). We could have been sitting under the shade, with a guide to point out what would have been hard to discern in the featureless green, while sipping cold soda, instead of getting sun burnt. I made sure I bitched about it the entire way.

  Everglades Wildlife

Not a lot of wildlife on this trail, and I don’t blame them: it was hot! We did see a hawk, a heron, a baby alligator, and the real thing itself, looking mean and ugly. There’s as much wildlife here as on Lake Alice on campus, or on the pond outside my apartment complex where mallards and ibises regularly drop by to feed. One thing did delight me: a heron by the roadside swallowing a silver fish. On the outpost, half-way around the trail, we saw some tortoises sunning themselves on a rock. At least somebody was enjoying the sun.

Uva 69 is just such a place, and it is a pretty good poster-child for the up and coming MiMo District on upper Biscayne. Featuring a tight menu of eclectic international fusion, a tasty wine list, and plenty of swank vibe, this is a great destination to impress a date or hang with the regulars. Unlike many of its happening brethren, it welcomes hipsters of all ages, right down to the tater-tots in strollers. Friday-Sun, put a civilized end to your hangover with a leisurely latte, and a Breakfast of Champions Burrito for less than your previous night’s cocktail on South Beach. Other lunch and dinner favs include the Fig Crostini appetizer ($6.00), Shaved Tomato Salad with Parmesan ($8.95), La Minuta grilled mahi-mahi sandwich ($8.95), and the superlative Salmon Fillet on a Bed of Bonito Mashed Potatoes with Crispy Spinach ($17.95). Seriously, nothing on the menu has ever been less than stellar, so no matter what your taste, you’ll tickle your tongue at Uva 69. My one complaint: I want the menu to either expand or change a little more frequently because this is the kind of place I’d like to visit even more frequently than I already do.
