Nietzsche wrote A Genealogy Of Morality (GOM) in 1880, a very interesting time. The stranglehold that Calvinist identity politics had on German public morality was beginning to slip. Bismarck had unified Germany under Prussian rule only ten years earlier. The “imaginary community” of the German Nation was being created. Nationalist and Populist politics were destabilizing all of the regimes of Europe that could not harness the New Nationalism to their cause.

Nietzsche witnessed an earlier era of identity politics when the newly minted secular identities of class and nation were gaining ground on the Calvinist and Lutheran identities. He despises the protestant morality which he grew up with. He calls it a slave morality which he traces back to the persecution of the early Christians within the Roman Empire. A slave morality is a sort of intense passive aggressive identity. As marginalized people the early christian theology identified with a victim status. It tried to make powerlessness into a virtue and dreamed of vengeance on the Sinful Roman empire. Nietzsche sees the Calvinist Identity as identifying with being victimized by the sinful, the powerful and the secular and dreaming of the ultimate vengeance fire and brimstone. In Contemporary California we might say that they “gave their power away” and embraced the role of the victim. Nietzsche finds this Victim Theology in most (all?) of the identity politics of his contemporaries, including christian moralism, anti-semitism, working-class populism, nationalism, socialism, anarchism and feminism. He felt that each of these movements had internalized the original Judeo-Christian victim cult.

At the time Nationalism was considered a progressive movement of liberation and modernism. Identifying with one’s nation was a new and modern identity which has started spreading across Europe with Napoleon earlier that century. Those new identities of German, Hungarian, Serbian and Croatian were very fresh and all based on cults of imagined victimization by another group. Hatred towards another group which is perceived to have power over your own “imagined community”, that was and is the basis of Identity Politics.

Potro: El vaquero estadounidense, mujeriego parrandero y jugador.

Watching the latest round of Nazi epithets shouted during town hall meetings causes me to seriously

Watching the latest round of Nazi epithets shouted during town hall meetings causes me to seriously doubt the quality of American education. That in one generation, Americans have forgotten the facts of Nazi Germany and dare to compare U.S. health reform to it is appalling.

Much has been written about the MSNBC article written by Arthur Caplan, Ph.D., Director of the Center for Bioethics at the University of Pennsylvania, in which he writes:

Limbaugh, Beck, Palin and other Holocaust deniers ignore the core racist evil of Nazism. They reach for preposterous analogies between counseling people about living wills and the forced, involuntary mass murder carried out in the name of racism in concentration camps.
When the right wing, in their distaste for the President’s push to reform a heath care system that even the American Medical Association and the pharmaceutical industry recognize has to be fixed, suggest that the disabled will be targeted, or that the elderly will be killed or find themselves without health care due to rationing by government bureaucrats as happened in Nazi Germany, they marginalize the gross evil that was the racial bigotry that fueled Nazi programs to euthanize, sterilize, experiment upon and torture people in places that were in no way connected to hospitals, clinics or nursing homes.
There is plenty to debate about health reform. But there is nothing to debate about the contemptible introduction of references, direct or oblique, to Nazi Germany. To do so is to engage in Holocaust denial. To do that is, as those Americans of the greatest generation who died or were injured fighting the Nazi menace well understood, inexcusable.

However, Caplan has become a renowned authority of medicine and medical ethics under the Nazi regime so perhaps his words should not be taken lightly by the uninformed. In Caplan’s article, he notes his father’s experience when, with the American Army, he arrived at Dachau.

My father’s war experience drew me to try and understand what had happened at Dachau. I have spent nearly 30 years trying to understand how the most scientifically and medically advanced nation of its day could have conducted the mass murder of so many Jews, Gypsies, homosexuals, Poles, Russians, Ukrainians and pacifists. Contrary to what Limbaugh and other Holocaust deniers would have you believe, German medicine and science were not brought into the Nazi party once Hitler took power. They fueled the fire for what became Nazism with bigotry proffered as science.
What distinguished the doctors and scientists of Germany pre-Hitler was that so many of them were firm believers in racial hygiene — the view that the Aryan race’s very existence was threatened by inferior peoples such as Jews, blacks and Slavs. They felt the only way to protect their “race,” a concept that itself made little biological sense, was to prohibit reproduction with inferior people and, ultimately, to destroy them. It was racism masquerading as science that formed the basis for Nazi science and medicine right down to the gas chambers and ovens that my dad found himself staring at in 1945.

Germany’s national health care did not begin with Hitler and the Third Reich. But the Nazi’s seriously distorted and infected it with evil. According to Marc S. Micozzi M.D., in the November 1993 of The Freeman, Volume: 43, Issue: 11, Germany’s national health began decades earlier:

The German social insurance and health care system began in the 1880s under Bismarck. Ironically, it was part of Bismarck’s “anti-socialist” legislation, adopted under the theory that a little socialism would prevent the rise of a more virulent socialism.
By the time of Weimar, German doctors had become accustomed to cooperating with the government in the provision of medical care. The reforms of the Weimar Republic following the medical crises of World War I included government policies to provide health care services to all citizens. Socially minded physicians placed great hope in a new health care system, calling for a single state agency to overcome fragmentation and the lack of influence of individual practitioners and local services.

Under the early Weimar Republic, German medical advances far outstripped the medical communities in the rest of the western world, focusing on prevention of chronic disease. For example, showing the link between cancer and tobacco use. Yet, German doctors remained largely racist and easily joined the Nazi’s.

The complex political situation in Germany during the 1920s and early 30s only made the medical ethics problems worse. (see google books online – http://bit.ly/1kyyQK) Wikipedia states the following, beginning in 1919:

The Republic was soon under attack from both left- and right-wing extremists. The radical left accused the ruling Social Democrats of having betrayed the ideals of the workers’ movement by preventing a communist revolution. Right-wing extremists opposed any democratic system, preferring an authoritarian state like the 1871 Empire. To further undermine the Republic’s credibility, right-wing extremists (especially certain members of the former officer corps) also blamed an alleged conspiracy of Socialists and Jews for Germany’s defeat in World War I. […]

Further pressure from the right came in 1923 with the Beer Hall Putsch, also called the Munich Putsch, staged by Adolf Hitler in Munich. In 1920, the German Workers’ Party had become the National Socialist German Workers’ Party (NSDAP), nicknamed the Nazi Party, and would become a driving force in the collapse of Weimar. Hitler was named chairman of the party in July 1921. On 8 November 1923, the Kampfbund, in a pact with Erich Ludendorff, took over a meeting by Bavarian prime minister Gustav von Kahr at a beer hall in Munich. Ludendorff and Hitler declared a new government, planning to take control of Munich the following day. The 3,000 rebels were thwarted by 100 policemen. Hitler was arrested and sentenced to five years in prison for high treason, a minimum sentence for the charge. Due to the trial, he served less than eight months in a comfortable cell before his release on the 20th of December 1924. While in jail, Hitler wrote “Mein Kampf” which laid out his ideas and future policies. Hitler now decided to focus on legal methods of gaining power.

Contrary to the rantings of the far right, the Nazi’s were not socialists or “lefties”. On the contrary, they were on the far right, preferring a highly authoritarian government such had existed prior to WWI. The Nazi’s hated socialism, took great pains to exterminate socialists and communists, and to eliminate any socialist policies put in place during the brief Weimar Republic. To that end, Hitler wanted to abolish national health coverage, but his advisors convinced him to keep it because it was too well liked by the German populace. However, it wasn’t until Goebbels took over the system that the atrocities began.

That Americans willingly accept the twisted, hate-filled, conspiracy-theorist views of people like Limbaugh, Beck, and LaRouche without doing any due-diligence to determine the accuracy of their statements underscores how badly our educational standards need to be upgraded. And how poorly Americans are educated.

Sorry for the delay in posting this entry. I had Internet connectivity problems for the past few day

Sorry for the delay in posting this entry. I had Internet connectivity problems for the past few days, which was rectified only yesterday evening.

In my last post I gave a brief roundup on the various articles that I had read on the General Motors bankruptcy and my own two cents take on the matter, especially the company’s influence on management theory and the writing of business books. This time round I will continue with my thoughts on GM, more particularly as to how the dominant paradigm of capitalism has changed over the past few decades and it was this, more than anything else, that left GM, and other companies like it, stranded like a beached whale after the tide had gone out. Whether this change has been a force for good or evil is another matter.

For the past one-week or so, I have been reading The Culture of the New Capitalism , a book by the American sociologist and academic, Richard Sennett . The book, over two hundred pages long and consisting of three longish essays (entitled “Bureaucracy”, “Talent and the Specter of Uselessness” and “Consuming Politics”), were originally delivered as the Castle Lectures at Yale University in 2004 and published in book form by the university in 2006.

Though all three essays are worth reading, I will limit my analysis to the first essay on the changing nature of organizations and bureaucracy, since its transformation was of direct consequence to the fate and fortunes of GM.

The striving towards stability and corporate longevity first occurred towards the closing decades of the nineteenth century. This was in reaction to the extreme instability of early capitalism that prevailed in the early and middle decades of the nineteenth century. Many critics, including Karl Marx, thought that this instability was its only consistent feature. “All that is solid melts into air” was Marx’s description of the system and thought that revolution was the only solution to this state of affairs. The idea (or fear) of revolution was not the sole prerogative of left-wing thinkers; many conservatives like Benjamin Disraeli and Otto von Bismark were of a similar opinion. It was Bismark, as Chancellor of Prussia and later of Germany, who first tried to develop a solution to this problem by applying military methods to business practices. This was during the 1870s when the prestige of the Prussian Army was at its peak, especially after its unexpectedly rapid victory over France in the 1870-71 Franco-Prussian War. Bismark’s fundamental assumption was that a worker who had an established position in society, no matter how minor, was less likely to revolt than one lacking this position. The social compact involved the militarization of civil society, that is, the development of a corporate bureaucracy. This phenomenon was first, and perhaps most thoroughly, studied by the great German sociologist, Max Weber.

This bureaucracy, based on the military model, was shaped like a pyramid: with the few at the top giving orders and those below, far larger in number, translating or obeying these orders. The great benefit of this pyramid shape was that it could add more and more people to its lower ranks, just as an army can absorb ever more foot soldiers. This allowed the avoidance of strife by giving everyone his place. As Bismarck recognized, business growth generates social dislocation and unrest, threats that can be addressed by expanding the employment base.

This highly regulated, social capitalism turned out to be quite profitable. After the chaos of early capitalism, investors seemed to prefer it as it provided them with predictable long-term yields, even if this meant eliminating competition. For the workers in the system, the pyramid gave them clear and stable identities, and this mattered in providing them with a sense of self-worth.

The most noteworthy feature of this system was the new notion of time and long term planning. As Richard Sennett puts it: “Time lay at the center of this military, social capitalism: long-term and incremental and above all predictable time…Rationalized time enabled people to think about their lives as narratives—narratives not so much of what necessarily will happen as of how things should happen. It became possible, for instance, to define what the stages of a career ought to be like, to correlate long-term service in a firm to specific steps of increased wealth.”

It was not all milk and honey though. One of the problems of this system (which ironically was one of its strengths too) was its rigidity: loyalty was to the position and the organization and not the person who was your boss. Hence the position and its job definition had to be fixed or static. There was no reward for taking your own initiative; in fact, you could be punished for stepping out of line. The second noteworthy feature was its subtle effect on a person’s character: this came about through the discipline of delayed gratification. Unfortunately, “a person who has learned the discipline of delay often cannot permit himself to arrive. Many driven individuals harbor this perverse sentiment. They feel whatever they have is not good enough, and they are incapable of enjoying the present for its own sake; delay of fulfillment becomes a way of life.” This was the ‘iron cage’ of bureaucratic capitalism that Weber talked about.

Though from a distance the system seemed totalitarian in nature (and in some extreme cases as in Nazi Germany and Stalinist Russia it was), in actual practice it left considerable room for individual freedom. Though orders were given by those at the top and were transmitted to those below, the very fact that there were a large number of layers between the top and bottom allowed each layer to interpret the orders as it sought fit, and in these small translations the individual found room for freedom.

Though this system was first devised in Germany in the late nineteenth century, it was quickly imitated by the large industrial magnate in the USA like Carnegie and Rockefeller. Companies like Marshall Fields, Armour, Sears were the pioneers in combining large pyramid-like structures with some element of decentralized decision making. And then there was Henry Ford who developed the production line system to mass-produce cars. GM was not the pioneer in any of these areas, except in the area of mass marketing. However as the largest company in the world from the 1920s onwards, it became synonymous with the monolithic pyramid-shaped organization that captured the popular imagination.

This organizational form seems to be in decay and is being replaced by what Richard Sennett calls the ‘MP3 organization’. Exactly what this MP3 organization is I will discuss in my next post.

Mr. Standing Crow, 27, from Bismark something Dakota, was arrested for “actual physical contro

Mr. Standing Crow, 27, from Bismark something Dakota, was arrested for “actual physical control” of a vehicle after being found passed out behind the wheel at a fast food restaurant. Chance was also charged with driving under a suspended license. Standing Crows 4 year old daughter was also in the car which could lead to further charges.

Oh, it gets better. Did I mention that this all happened at 10:05 in the morning? I know some people like to get their drink on early but, man, ole Chance really knows how to hammer the bottle. It does not say what restaurant he was driving through but I am going to guess he was looking for some sort of breakfast burrito. It’s the kind of food that fills you up just enough to keep from hurling out the window.

Can I ask a question? What kind of name is Chance Standing Crow, anyway? My guess is that it is either Indian or Swedish. (I just threw the Swedes in so it wouldn’t look like I am profiling). The report does not mention the daughters name but sources say it is Little Screwed One. It is always nice to see children bonding with their parents in the morning. Granted, most do it at the park but behind the wheel of a Pinto (and not the horse) is also kind of cool.

The article does not mention whether Little Screwed One was taken from Chance but it appears she was not. And why should she be? He was charged for actual physical control. That doesn’t even sound like something you should be arrested for. It’s kind of like being pulled over for ”real bowel movement”. Sure, it is unsightly and the aroma is offensive but you can hardly take someone to jail for it.

Besides, this all happened in North or South or East Dakota. Only like 7 people live in the whole state. No doubt Chance’s dad owns the fast food place and his uncle is the Chief of Police. Where are they going to put Otis if Andy is out of town with Aunt Bea? (And can we all please agree that Aunt Bee was smoking hot?)

Where was I? Oh yeah, this is just another case of the white man holding the red man down. (How come I have never seen an actual red man? The Irish are more pink than red but that is the closest match I have ever found). Anyway, if Standing Crow had been black, they would have fulfilled his order of chicken nuggets and a giant Sprite and let him leave with no questions asked. Man, this racial crap gets my blood boiling!

Anyway, next time you are in one of the Dakotas, try not to pass out in the fast food line. It is rude and you are wasting valuable gas. Also, if you want to fit in, make sure you are hammered by noon. Now, go in peace Sitting Monkey Ass.
