I want to apologize to anyone who was infected with a Trojan when my Facebook account sent out bogus messages, purportedly from me.  My PC got infected when I clicked on what I believed to be a video sent by one of my Facebook friends, but I now know was a message generated by the Trojan program.  Although I wasn’t able to stop the spread of the virus, I wanted to document how I got rid of it in case my experience is able to help save you, my friends who I’ve unwittingly infected, the time and frustration it took me in figuring out how to fix it.  Maybe a few strangers will happen onto my blog and find it useful too.

Although I have a current subscription to McAfee, my PC got infected anyway.  After this entire experience, I consider my McAfee subscription practically worthless and I’ll be replacing it with something else soon, but more on that later.  I first became aware that I had a problem when I kept getting a pop-up that said something like “your computer is highly infected”.  The poor grammar made me suspicious, so I clicked “ignore”, and the pop-up box kept trying to force me to “install anti-virus software now”.  I found out that if I had actually installed it, I would have really been in trouble because the so-called Anti-Virus program would have installed spyware and additional stuff that is really hard to remove.

Although I was able to exit the pesky pop-up windows through the task manager, I still ended up with several Trojans, which luckily were not too malicious, and after multiple days of research were fairly easy to get rid of.  I’m sure a tech geek could have done it in 5 minutes or less, but I had no clue what I was doing so it took me longer to figure out what I had and how to get rid of them.  I was also very leery of clicking on ads versus organic search results at that point as I was afraid to make my problem worse. 

What I Had:

1) FakeAlert-1K

2) HTML/FakeAV

3) JSDownloader.gen

4) Trojan.Packed.Hiloti.Gen.2

I ran several free programs as no one program cleaned all of the Trojans.  Luckily mine were just annoying pop-ups that prompted me to install further software and I didn’t have rootkits or other nasty stuff that I would have had to call a pro to clean up for me. Incidentally, I called McAfee as soon as I knew something was wrong since I do have a McAfee subscription and they told me it was my fault I got infected.  They offered to send me some additional information and links with instructions via email but said if I couldn’t figure it out, or if those links didn’t clear up the problem, they couldn’t offer any more help unless I paid for it.  I protested that I shouldn’t have to pay because if their program had worked in the first place I wouldn’t have this problem.  They said maybe someone else downloaded the Trojan to my PC or that I must have disabled the notifications or something.  They are 100% WRONG on both counts—I’m the only one who uses this PC and my notifications are working just fine, yet I still got infected! 

Here are the links to the free stuff I ran:

1)       McAfee.  Run this to find out what you may have, but don’t expect any removal tools because McAfee doesn’t offer them, even if you have a paid subscription.  They do have free removal tools for 3 specific things (Stinger, Klez, Bugbear) but I didn’t have any of those.  McAfee did not even find the 4^th Trojan which was lurking about on my PC. 

2)      BitDefender.  This free product was great!  It found and removed the first 3 Trojans identified above.  BitDefender did not identify the 4^th Trojan (Hiloti) which was found on my PC.

3)      F-Secure.  I also ran this product last after I had already removed the first 3 Trojans.  It identified and removed the 4^th Trojan (Hiloti) not found by the first two products.  If I had run it before BitDefender it may have removed all four, but I don’t plan to get the Trojans again in order to find out!

More about why I think McAfee Sucks!

I didn’t buy McAfee by choice—it was pre-installed by Dell when I bought my new PC, even though I had my PC “custom-built” to my specifications.  They put it on every PC whether or not you want it, and there was no way to opt-out (although you can remove the software after you receive your PC)!  Didn’t Microsoft get busted for shenanigans like that a few years back in a major antitrust lawsuit?  Needless to say I’m going to dump McAfee and I’m not going to wait another year for my subscription to expire!  In looking at this chart of independent research you can see McAfee isn’t exactly at the top of the heap when it comes to effectiveness in anti-virus software.  That coupled with their insulting offer to make me pay them even more money after their product failed to deliver is a stunning example how NOT to retain a customer and how to nudge a customer to write about their poor experience and post it on a blog for everyone to see.  The funny part is that my conversation with the CSR was not unpleasant and I’m certain he has no idea how annoyed I am with them.  I admit I was only mildly annoyed when I was on the phone and it wasn’t until I received the email from McAfee and found the instructions to be way too technical for a layperson such as myself that I reached the tipping point and decided to turn my efforts into finding a better product.  In the past I had AVG antivirus software and was quite satisfied with them until I bought a new PC from Dell (a different one-I’m a very loyal Dell customer) pre-installed with Windows Vista when it first came out.  I installed my AVG antivirus software on it and had all kinds of problems, so I contacted Dell and found out that AVG didn’t work with Vista (and it was quite a while before it did), so I was stuck with a worthless subscription, at which point I bought Norton.  What kind of company isn’t ready for a major Microsoft release for that long? Interestingly, the people at Dell were using AVG on their systems-they just didn’t upgrade to Vista although every new PC they sold was pushed out the door with it.  At this point I’m leaning toward F-Secure, although it looks like most of the providers they work with are in Europe.  Of course, I don’t know what would happen if I end up with another tech issue, so I still have more research to do.

I also ran a free Malware scanner and found and dumped a bunch of spyware I didn’t know was on my PC.  I found this program on a CNET editors list of free software.  While some of the others on list are also supposed to be free, they will SCAN for free, but if you want to remove the threats they find, you have to subscribe.  This one scans AND removes threats for free.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

As I stated above, I’m not a tech geek, although I can manage my home network and I’ve never mistaken my CDROM for a coffee mug holder.  You’d think with the power of social media, companies would better train their CSRs so they wouldn’t insult the customers and treat them like Granny low-tech.  I doubt if I’ll take the time to blog about every poor customer service experience I have, but in this case because it touched every one of my Facebook friends, I felt compelled to share my story.  Although if you are reading this it is probably because I infected your PC and it has cost you time and frustration, I hope these tips will save you the days of research it took me to get clean.

Dupa cum ne-au obisnuit, cei de la BitDefender au prezentat recent  topul pe luna septembrie in ceea ce priveste amenintarile informatice din Romania.Iata raportul producatorului autohton de solutii de securitate:

Astfel, în luna septembrie au predominat troienii (patru noi apariţii în top) şi viruşii care folosesc facilitatea Autorun din Windows pentru a se răspândi (trei poziţii în top).

Pe ultima poziţie din top găsim virusul Win32.Induc.A, destul de neobişnuit prin faptul că ameninţă numai utilizatorii mediului de programare Borland Delphi, facând ca executabilele create cu un mediu infectat să poată afecta la rândul lor sistemele altor programatori Delphi.

“Virusul nu are o încărcătură utilă (în sensul că nu conţine cod care să fure sau să distrugă informaţii) ceea ce a dus la presupunerea că fie este un experiment scăpat de sub control, fie un “balon de încercare”, care ar putea fi urmat de o variantă care să producă şi profit pentru creatorul său”, a declarat Sorin Dudea, Şeful Laboratorului Antimalware, BitDefender.

O altă nouă intrare, pe locul nouă, este Gen:Adware.Heur.hq1@Qm!VmBji, care corespunde unei detecţii generice bazate pe comportament, de data aceasta fiind vorba de un tipar specific programelor care servesc reclame (adware).

Win32.Worm.IMStealer.A (locul opt luna trecută) a dispărut din top, fiind înlocuit de Worm.Autorun.VHG, vierme care exploatează vulnerabilitatea MS08-067 din Windows, în creştere două locuri faţă de luna august.

Pe poziţia şapte găsim Trojan.JS.PYV, un script Java care descarcă şi execută alţi viruşi, iar pe şase o detecţie generică Exploit.PDF-JS.Gen, care corespunde tuturor ameninţărilor informatice ce folosesc o vulnerabilitate în modul în care versiuni mai vechi ale Adobe Reader procesează script-urile Java din fişierele .pdf.

Pe locul cinci, la fel ca lună trecută, găsim virusul polimorf şi criptat Win32.Sality.OG, care instalează un rootkit şi încearcă să compromită aplicaţiile antivirus instalate pe sistemul infectat. Pe locul patru este troianul Trojan.Autorun.AET, al cărui singur scop este să încarce în memorie viermele de pe locul trei.

Pe locul trei, o prezenta notabilă, mai ales prin longevitate, dar şi prin numărul relativ mare de fişiere infectate detectate, este Win32.Worm.Downadup.Gen, cunoscut şi sub numele de Conficker sau Kido.

Locul doi este ocupat de un troian care serveşte reclame, numit Trojan.Clicker.CM, iar pe primul loc o altă detectie generică, Trojan.AutorunINF.Gen, de data aceasta subsumând acele ameninţări care fac uz de un truc comun – adăugarea numelui fişierului virus în fişierul autorun.inf găsit într-un director partajat în reţea sau pe un mediu portabil – pentru a se răspandi.

Au sens strict, un virus informatique est un programme informatique écrit dans le but de se propager à d’autres ordinateurs en s’insérant dans des programmes légitimes appelés « hôtes ». Il peut aussi avoir comme effet, recherché ou non, de nuire en perturbant plus ou moins gravement le fonctionnement de l’ordinateur infecté. Il peut se répandre à travers tout moyen d’échange de données numériques comme l’internet, mais aussi les disquettes, les cédéroms, les clefs USB, etc. Les virus informatiques ne doivent pas être confondus avec les vers qui sont des programmes capables de se propager et de se dupliquer par leurs propres moyens sans contaminer de programme hôte.

Son appellation provient d’une analogie avec le virus biologique puisqu’il présente des similitudes dans sa manière de se propager en utilisant les facultés de reproduction de la cellule hôte. On attribue le terme de « virus informatique » à l’informaticien et spécialiste en biologie moléculaire Leonard Adleman (Fred Cohen, Experiments with Computer Viruses, 1984).

Au sens large, on utilise souvent et abusivement le mot virus pour désigner toute forme de programme malveillant (malware).

I recently handed in my PC for a disc drive repair, and it ended up that one of their USB pen-drives, which was used on my computer, was infected with a autorun.inf virus. They also apparently disabled my antivirus’ behavioral scanner, which enabled the unknown virus to act. So far the only thing it has appeared to do is spread by making an autorun.inf file on every USB stick, and I’ve managed to track it down to a Services group in Windows. To investigate, I disabled all but the basic and antivirus services and am now scanning with various other ones (Mine, BitDefender Antivirus 2009, couldn’t find it even then.). I may even contact BitDefender support for help and attach the infecting file for them to investigate, but it seems I may need to format and reinstall. Fortunately, I only set it up 9 months ago and clearly know what I need to backup and what I can simply redownload.

My mom and I already decided we will buy our future computers from a known OEM like HP when the time comes again, because of the amount of times we’ve been burnt by their bad parts and lousy support. As of now, I’ve replaced my old PC’s motherboard about 3 to 4 times, changed the power supply twice, and on my new PC that is only 9 months old, I changed the power supply 4 times and replaced the disc drive once (now). And my mom’s new PC’s disc drive is defective and can’t read any discs’ last sectors.

Given the new development, once my mom comes home from Beijing (she’s on a trip to Beijing and Tibet) we’re going to send a letter to the CEO of Ivory Computers, only ship the parts we know are bad to Ivory requesting a replacement according to our warranty agreement and if necessary, take the computer to a different branch for repair, since my uncle uses Ivory PCs and has not come across an issue like ours.

I’m sick and tired of these troubles that I didn’t even have anything to do with. I just want to use a normal, working computer. If this continues I’m sure my mom will agree to buy new HP PCs already and reuse the graphics card if the troubles continue. Trust me, the gas used to drive there all the time may actually cost the same.

This is doing wonders to my ongoing depression.
