• CNY’s own Wes Miles (Ra Ra Riot frontman) released an album with his side project, Discovery, this month. 20 Watts had an interview and there is no plans for another Discovery album or tour anytime soon. Ra Ra Riot on the other hand will be in the studio and has some fall dates that include Ithaca.

• Phantogram announced (via their Twitter) that they are embarking on an official US/European tour starting this fall.

• The only discussion on the July 2009 CNY Music Podcast dealt with album of the year for 2009’s first half. Nate and The Fan Club were at it again, each selecting their top three albums to discuss in two-minutes or less (with the aid of a Taboo buzzer).  See below for the selections but cue up the podcast to hear analysis on the albums and which ones just missed the cut.

Nate and The Fan Club didn’t have time to get to album reviews this podcast. Don’t fret – the quick recaps are here for you.

Nate took in Health/Awesome Color at a secret show during a weekend trip to Brooklyn. The venue was called the Market Hotel and it epitomized what you want from an uber-hip, discreet venue. Awesome Color was a pleasant surprise – bringing a genuine classic rock sound mixed with that indie energy of today. The lead singer even brings Rainn Wilson’s character in “The Rocker” to mind a bit.

Health on the other hand was a total shock. If you aren’t familiar with their live show and you’re basing expectations off their MySpace… you will be disappointed. The heavy yet melodic synth approach in “Die Slow” for instance does not come across well when sound quality and musicianship is thrown out the window for raw energy instead. Give Health credit for producing a unique concert experience (check out this brief clip from the crowd, everyone is banging and banging hard) but don’t be fooled by their recordings. They sound like two different bands.

John Legend in Albany did not even begin to disappoint however. Legend may have crafted the perfect show. His music spans everything from upbeat stuff you could hear in the club to slow jams you only play when you’re alone. The sound was great considering the venue and Legend made sure to cover all the major hits from his repertoire.

His sound alone would make the performance noteworthy, but Legend was a consummate showman on top of that. He created such an intimate atmosphere with his crowd that the house absolutely melted with his every move. He entered the stage by walking through the crowd like some ’80s WWF wrestler, encouraged the crowd to take their part on choruses, reentered the stage for his encore in a glowing white suit and even made one audience member’s night by choosing her to be his partner during “Slow Dancin’.”

Sweden.  Dude, seriously.  You’re like the Arthur Fonzarelli of music and off-beat culture.  Timelessly smooth, good at EVERYTHING and completely removed from effort.  I think I’d endure the embarrasment of being a husky, overachieving 6th grader all over again if I could only have you, fair Sweden, as my impossibly fresh, high-school dropout older brother.

The majority of heads will reference national treasures ‘Peter, Björn & John’ as the frontrunners in the Swedes’ claim to musical forward-thinking.  That’s fine.  They’re a talented bunch.  For my money, though, I’d much rather spend an afternoon with Jens Lekman’s pop-sensible quirkiness or the electro-acoustic serenity of ‘The Radio Dept.’ Oh, and these girls:

‘Those Dancing Days’ are one of the latest Swedish imports to find their way onto American airwaves.  Their self-titled debut ep was released last summer and became an instant favorite of mine.  Picture a not-quite-ready-for-Motown girl group from the 60s (yeah, lead singer Linnea Jönsson gots skills), meeting up with the “just-barely-learning-their-instruments” incarnation of the Go Go’s, then both of them staying up waaaaay late practicing Elvis & The Attractions’ “Radio, Radio”.  Swoon.

I had the pleasure of catching these ladies at stinky LA hipster-haven, Spaceland.  They had all the nerves of a band playing their first ever American gig (I’ve been waiting since May 2008), while maintaining all the talent and promise of a group well on their way to becoming indie darlings (and mainstays).  They played almost every song off their debut album In Our Space Hero Suits (Wichita), released last fall, but it was their innocent, cute and endearing sense of fun that had me transfixed.  I’m not really too sure how the rest of the crowd responded, as I was busy singing and staring in what must’ve appeared like a pedophilic trance (they’re fresh outta high school, so you can imagine how creepy a grown-ass man losing his mind at a bunch of young girls might seem).

Earlier this week Camera Obscura’s forthcoming LP, My Maudlin Career, was leaked.  Apparently the leak is a standard V2 “scene release,” so at least it’s of half decent quality.

My Maudlin Career was produced by Swede Jari Haapalainen (of Peter, Bjorn & John, and the Concretes) and will definitely be better than Peter, Bjorn & John’s new album Living Thing.

If you haven’t heard Camera Obscura before you have to listen to their 2004 LP, Underachievers Please Try Harder – it’s quite enjoyable.  Also, you can check out the title track from My Maudlin Career, provided (for free) by the band.

Meet Sunny, the harmonious sunburst in our lives.  He — she — who knows — probably a girl because she’s in love with Mike — prefers to stay safely in her home and goes into hiss mode if you even give her the slightest idea you’re inviting her out.  She always enjoys a kiss through the bars and is first to let the dogs know the UPS man has arrived.  But the most wonderful and peaceful qualities of Sunny are her whimsical melodies.  They really follow no certain pattern or chord, but give so much life to the comings and goings of a home filled with barking dogs, televisions, and the occasional chaos. 

Lately “Young Folks” has been playing throughout our house quite frequently, and Sunny has really taken a liking to the whistling.  Actually, I think we all have.

So here’s to you, Sunny.  Thanks for brightening our days and warming our nights with your whistling rays of light.

Rock am Ring

Zweifellos sind The Killers mit ihrem aktuellen Album „Day & Age“ die musikalischen Protagonisten ihrer Zeit. Der Nürburgring und das Zeppelinfeld sind die Schauplätze ihrer exklusiven Festivalauftritte.

Das gilt auch für Placebo, die ebenfalls mit einer neuen CD aufschlagen, sowie den US-Metalrock-Superstars Slipknot, die ihre absoluten Headliner-Qualitäten gerade auf ihrer restlos ausverkauften Tour untermauert haben.

Zum Spitzenfeld der ersten Tranche zählen die kanadischen Punkrocker Billy Talent ebenso wie die schwedischen Indie-Rock-Heroen Mando Diao und die außerordentlich beliebten The Subways.

Sinceramente, nada que no hayan escuchando antes. A mi esto me suena a Mozz total, ¿que no? Abajo quedan, por este orden, el buenrollismo manuchaero (como lo oyen) de Emiliana Torrini, que, dicho sea se paso, se parece a una profesora de francés que tuve. Tampoco se entusiasmen con este. Luego va el nuevo de Peter, Bjorn & John, que no sé si me gusta o no. Pero el principio mola. Se agradece que no suene a ‘Young Floks’, eso sí. La parte surrealista de este post es que el link está en la página del rapero Kanye West que debe ser fan y de cuyo criterio deben fiarse estos chicos. Bueno, recordaréis que estos son los de los silbiditos, cómo olvidarles. Tuvimos ‘Young Folks‘ en todas las campañas de publicidad, caretas, y sintonías radiofónicas posibles. Pues después de escuchar este “Nothing to worry about” vayan olvidándose de aquello. El trío ya dijo que iban a cambiar el rollo pero… ¿esto? Es como si a MGMT les hubiesen encargado la careta de Los Pitufos. El disco se llamará ‘Living Thing” y veremos qué pasa. Bajaros el tema pinchando en la foto. Si no queréis descargar, abajo tienes un video. Mi consejo es: prepararsus para lo peor. Desde mysweetheart.

Semana de filtraciones. Si ayer le tocó a la música Metal con el nuevo álbum de Metallica, hoy le toca al Indie con Seaside Rock, el nuevo álbum de Peter, Bjorn & John que tiene como fecha de salida el 23 de Septiembre.  La noticia la he visto en Cuchara Sónica donde también nos proporcionan el tracklist del disco. En Cuchara tienen toda la razón, con frases como “pero, como siempre, nuestro dios llamado Internet, ya lo tiene entre sus garras” y vosotros sois los primeros en traérnoslo, Gracias Cuchara!

Depois de confirmar o ex-Los Hermanos Marcelo Camelo, e as suecas do Shout Out Louds, Peter Bjorn & Jonh e Club 8, o Coquetel Motolov divulgou a programação completa do festival que acontece anualmente na Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (UFPE).

Comparando com os outros anos, onde foi possível ver bandas como Tortoise, The Kills, Nouvelle Vague e outras, o line-up de 2008 vem sendo apontado pelo público como o menos atrativo de todas as edições do evento. Desse ano, vale mencionar Burro Morto e A Banda de Joseph Tourton, dois grupos instrumentais nordestinos que inauguram o Coquetel Molotov e devem reeditar as boas apresentações na salinha ao lado do Teatro da UFPE, que ano passado contou com ótimos shows de Elma (SP) e Fóssil (CE).

Coisa parecida deve acontecer com a Guizado, grupo experimental excelente de São Paulo, que provavelmente fará o melhor show de todo o Coquetel (podem escrever aí). O Vanguart já havia soltado que participaria do festival em sua página do fotolog, dias antes da escalação oficial. Além deles, que tem um público cativo onde quer que toquem no país, a grande atração nacional – e a mais esperada do festival – fica por conta de Marcelo Camelo, que também se apresentará no Rio de Janeiro em dois shows no Canecão, no fim do ano.

Mallu Magalhães, que já conversou com o Subsom, certamente deve agradar aos presentes, principalmente os mais novos (o festival tem ampliado seu público desde a primeira edição, que contou com o Teenage Fanclub). Akin é uma aposta insólita, com a possibilidade de o público indie torcer o nariz para as rimas embutidas num estilo denominado “open mic”, em que o artista faz rimas no improsivo em cima de bases contínuas.

Quanto às bandas internacionais, a que deve atrair maior interesse, apesar do lobby em cima das bandas suecas (por sinal, nada relevantes), é a canadense Final Fantasy, que lembra alguma coisa do norte-americano Sufjan Stevens, estourado com seu Illinois.

Fora isso, o que mais tem incomodado os fãs que acompanham o festival ao longo dos anos é que, ao menos em comparação com as outras edições, parece que mantiveram uma estrutura mainstream, mas resolveram tornar o negócio minimalista demais, com aproveitamento de nomes nacionais que já estão na cena há algum tempo para o palco do Teatro, e com a parceria com o Consulado da Suécia que muita gente considera desgastada desde a edição de 2007 do festival.

Apesar de tudo, é preciso elogiar a atitude dos organizadores em trazer artistas – mesmo que criticados até na própria comunidade do Orkut do evento – que caso contrário, os pagantes gostem ou não, nunca pisariam em terras pernambucanas. Em breve, o Subsom publicará algumas entrevistas com bandas que integram o line-up do Coquetel.
