MTV's Show Logo

Flipping through the channels today made me realize that there are no longer any good music shows left on television. I’m talking about the ones that focused exclusively on music, especially hip hop. Take it back to the 90’s and you have YO! MTV Raps which to me is a great show. Ed Lover and Dr. Dre served as great host and daily appearances by artists made it one of my staple shows everyday after-school. Sadly enough this was replaced by “Total Request Live,” which to me is garbage. But I can’t be mad at MTV, times have changed, and they are a business when it comes down to it.

BET's Show Logo

On the other side you have BET’s Rap City, which was a more updated version of YO! MTV Raps. This show did a good job of bringing the current hip hop. Yet sadly enough, this show didn’t last either. Tigga made a pretty decent host. The show also succumbed to the times and was replaced by “106 & Park,” which to me is just another copy cat of MTV’s “TRL.” However I’ll take 106 & Park over TRL any day!

Queen Latifah: musician; television and film actress; a label president; an author and entrepreneur. Blessed with style and substance, Queen Latifah has blossomed into a one-woman entertainment conglomerate. Heralded by the press and the industry as a force to be reckoned with, Latifah has quite simply done it all and shows no sign of slowing down. Latifah has had amazing success in Hollywood in recent years, and became the first hip hop artist to be crowned with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on January 4, 2006. She received rave reviews, an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress, a Golden Globe nomination and a SAG Award nomination for her portrayal as Mama Morton in Miramax’s Chicago. Following Chicago, Latifah starred in Disney’s box office hit Bringing Down the House, on which she also acted as executive producer. In addition to music, film and television, Queen Latifah has also written a book on self-esteem entitled Ladies First: Revelations of a Strong Woman. Queen Latifah is diligent in her pursuit of excellence, as is evident by the awards she has received for her work in film and music. Her sincere concern for others is revealed by the generous amount of time and money that she donates to worthwhile charitable organizations. Every year, Queen Latifah serves as co-chairman for the Lancelot H. Owens Scholarship Foundation, Inc. Established by her mother, Rita Owens, to perpetuate the memory of a loving son and brother, the foundations provides scholarships to students who excel scholastically, but are limited in financial resources.

When rap exploded creatively and commercially in the late 1980s, Ice Cube was at the forefront of the expansion. As the lyrical brains behind N.W.A, the Los Angeles-based rapper instantly became a major player in the music game by leading a musical revolution with brutal, profane, politically-infused music that, for the first time in the genres history, sold millions of albums with N.W.As Straight Outta Compton. As a solo artist, Ice Cube became raps premier act with the release of the searing masterpieces AmeriKKKas Most Wanted and Death Certificate.

Now, after becoming Hollywoods most bankable actor thanks to his Barbershop and Friday franchises, Ice Cube returns to his first artistic love, rapping. Laugh Now, Cry Later, the multi-platinum, award-winning music icons first solo album in six years, simmers with celebration, as well as the rage, reflection and introspection that are the hallmarks of timeless music. I feel Laugh Now, Cry Later is the state of the world, of America, of urban America, of hip-hop, Ice Cube explains of his seventh solo album. It seems like everybody is playing and nobody’s worried about anything.

On the explosive Scott Storch (50 Cent, Dr. Dre, Beyonce) produced Why We Thugs, Ice Cube blasts an oppressive system that cripples Americas ghettos and fosters the perpetual ruin of such areas as South Central, Compton and Long Beach, Los Angeles metropolitan areas that have been war zones for decades.

Now, with the impending release of Laugh Now, Cry Later, his first solo album released on his own Lench Mob Records, Ice Cube is on top of his creative game and relishing in his ability to make his latest album at his own pace and on his own terms.

I’m putting my money where my mouth is because theres nothing a major label can do for me that I cant do for myself, he says. Not being signed to a particular label, putting it out myself, not having to worry about what a company or anyone else has to think about the record, being able to just go in and do it how I feel it with no timelines or deadlines, it made me comfortable. I was able to recommitment myself to rhyming and rapping. That all molded the way that this record sounds, which is important because I want my records to last the rest of the year when they come out.

Truth be told, Laugh Now, Cry Later will last well into the next decade.

Tavis Smiley Stiffed T.S.U. Famous broadcaster Tavis Smiley has stiffed Texas Southern University be

Tavis Smiley Stiffed T.S.U.

Famous broadcaster Tavis Smiley has stiffed Texas Southern University because Smiley has not fulfilled a $1 million donation he had committed to give the school, the Houston Chronicle reported Friday.

Texas Southern University had, in honor of the donation, dedicated and named the Tavis Smiley School of Communication, at the university, in his honor. Smiley promised in 2004 to donate $1 million and to raise another $1 million for TSU.

To date, he has donated $50,000 while raising an additional $250,000, which was donated from three corporate donors.

Smiley had promised Friday, October 23rd, to live up to his original personal commitment of one million dollars, but the payment terms would be twice as long for him to complete, which was radically different from his original commitment.

Smiley agreed in 2004 to give TSU $200,000 a year for five years and to help raise another $1 million.

He said he stopped the payments out of concern about mismanagement under former University President Priscilla Slade, who, along with her colleague Quentin Wiggins were brought up on charges of misappropriation of university funds. Quentin Wiggins was convicted and sentenced to ten-years in prison. Slade’s first trial resulted in a hung jury, and she faced retrial in 2008.

My inside sources at the campus report that Slade received a plea bargain that gives her 10 years in probation, and is bared from holding a similar position for the length of her probation.

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools placed TSU on probation for noncompliance with regulations on financial management and administration. The university’s probation was lifted in June 2009.

His business manager, Kenneth Goldman, wrote that Smiley wanted to pay $50,000 by the end of 2009 and $100,000 a year for the next nine years.

These terms were radically different from the agreed upon terms, that Smiley had committed to meet.

He also would no longer try to raise money from outside corporate donors, further poisoning the deal.

TSU’s well-publicized problems made it impossible to raise money from corporate donors, Smiley said Friday. “And obviously, like most Americans, my personal income has been impacted by this recession.”

Still, he said, he intended to honor his commitment, even if it would take a decade to do so. Now, he said he will donate that money elsewhere.

That was the last straw for the administration of T.S.U. and the fired off a statement to Smiley saying…”Because you did not fulfill your original commitment to our partnership, TSU plans to treat the partnership as being at an end,” Rudley was quoted as saying in a Sept. 28 letter to Smiley… “

TSU’s school of communication recently announced that entertainment executive Matthew Knowles, CEO of Music World Entertainment and father of singers Beyoncé and Solange Knowles, began teaching in its entertainment and the recording industry program this fall, at the former Tavis Smiley School of Broadcasting and Entertainment.

Smiley, known for his Black Entertainment Television and radio work, maintains TSU officials named the school after him before he even agreed to donate the $1 million.

“I even made a joke, how much is this decision going to cost me?” Smiley said of a conversation he had with former TSU President Slade. “She said, ‘This decision has already been made.’”

One of America’s most celebrated and respected media personalities, Smiley hosts a half-hour nightly talk show on PBS, “Tavis Smiley,” which reaches 92 percent of America’s households and is seen in 187 countries. His annual symposium, “State of the Black Union,” featuring America’s premier thought leaders, engages thousands of attendees and over 100 million viewers worldwide.

That’s all good, but, be that as it may, the administrators at T.S.U. are certain that his bark is worst than his bite, and that, given the main tool of a broadcaster is his mouth, Tavis may have a big mouth full of big talk and promises, but in the end, he had a pretty small wallet, to be playing at this level of philanthropy.

I can only look at this from a business stand point, and he basically reneged on a promise.

Tavis Smiley has stiffed Texas Southern University, so he gets his name stripped from the building, and will be banished from the campus, in a very public and embarrassing way.

Let’s hope that they can get back on track down at TSU, a school I hold in very high esteem.

With the filming moving to Atlanta, one of the main worries is that BET won’t be able to afford the show’s extensive budget. This is probably where that Viacom money is going to kick in. Article Courtesy of Bossips

TMZ.com is reporting that Sickle Cell Anemia may have played a significant role in the death of Ashley “A.J.” Jewell, the ex-fiancé of “Real Housewives of Atlanta” star Kandi Burress.

Fulton County Associate Medical Examiner Dr. Kelly Rose tells TMZ preliminary autopsy results led her to believe that A.J., who died two weeks ago after a strip club brawl, suffered from the life long blood disorder that inhibits oxygen flow to tissues in the body.

Police say Ashley ”was involved in an altercation in the parking lot and he received a severe blow to the head,” Police Lt. Keith Meadows told the Atlanta TV station WBSTV. Immediately following the fight, Ashley was taking to a hospital where he later died.

Sickle cell anemia is a disease passed down through families in which red blood cells form an abnormal crescent shape. (Red blood cells are normally shaped like a disc.). Sickle-cell disease may lead to various acute and chronic complications, several of which are potentially lethal.

Atlanta native and singing superstar T-Boz of TLC, famously also suffers from sickle cel anemia, which has affected her career for years.

I don’t think being a minority makes you a victim of anything except numbers.

Guns do not make you a killer. I think killing makes you a killer. You can kill someone with a baseball bat or a car, but no one is trying to ban you from driving to the ball game.

I think that if you feel homosexuality is wrong, it is not a phobia, it is an opinion.

When 70% of the people who get arrested are black, in cities where 70% of the population is black, that is not racial profiling; it is the Law of Probability.

I believe that if you are selling me a milkshake, a pack of cigarettes, a newspaper or a hotel room, you must do it in English! As a matter of fact, if you want to be an American citizen, you should have to speak English!

My father and grandfather didn’t die in vain so you can leave the countries you were born in to come over and disrespect ours.

I think the police should have every right to shoot you if you threaten them after they tell you to stop. If you can’t understand the word ‘freeze’ or ’stop’ in English, see the above lines.

It doesn’t take a whole village to raise a child right, but it does take a parent to stand up to the kid and smack their little behinds when necessary, and say ‘NO!’

And if you don’t like my point of view, tough …

This fall and winter seasons will be the platform for over-the-knee boots. It seems that these boots are no longer for hookers, but are for the fashionista. Celebs are embracing this boot trend and I must say that I’m diggin’ them too! These boots can be easily paired with some skinny jeans, leggings, short skirts, and even shorts. Be careful not to overdo the outfit though. The over-the-knee boot is always going to be the main attraction!

These boots come in all shapes and styles. From flats to five-inch heels (or higher), these boots will definitely enhance any outfit. These boots are also a great option for those of us who live in colder fall and winter climates. They provide us fashionistas the option of rocking the short skirts and shorts when the weather is not so warm. Money is no issue either. Two thumbs up to the over-the-knee boot. I love them!

Bob Johnson, Founder and Chairman of The RLJ Companies, today announced the launch of www.ClubCharit

Bob Johnson, Founder and Chairman of The RLJ Companies, today announced the launch of www.ClubCharity.com, the premier online charity auction site destined to fast become the online resource for corporate and celebrity charitable giving.

ClubCharity.com, which was created in affiliation with CharityBids, an online auction site renowned for its global non-profit fund raising and expertise, is an opportunity to use the technology of the Internet to create a venue for those of us who are more fortunate to help those less fortunate. The idea behind ClubCharity is to create a unique online philanthropic website where celebrities and other charity-minded individuals or corporations can give back and help those in need. All proceeds collected through the online auction site will be donated to worthwhile causes.

“As founder of Black Entertainment Television (BET) and now chairman of The RLJ Companies, I have had a wonderful experience over the years working with corporations as well as celebrities to support many charitable endeavors,” said Johnson. “Ideally, my vision for ClubCharity is to be a major part of charitable giving. We have garnered the participation and generous support of many well known celebrities and sports figures, who have donated personalized items or experiences so their fans can bid on and enjoy all while helping support the charity of the celebrity’s choice,” he concluded.

On the corporate giving side, the charitable website will ultimately create value for consumers and companies that are making their products and services available. In an effort to brand corporate identities, companies regularly donate items representative of their brand or the products they manufacture, often times in lieu of cash donations. Such branded products will also be available to bidders through the site, with proceeds benefiting the designated foundation or charity selected by the company.

Johnson himself has donated for auction a stay at his private villa located off the coast of Anguilla. Celebrity items that were donated to the site include:

* BET, tickets to the 2010 BET Awards Show
* Beyoncé, tickets to her “Sasha Fierce” concert in London

Clark and Love from this blog here are perfect examples of what’s to come in the near future.

Clark and Love from this blog here are perfect examples of what’s to come in the near future. People are getting more and more stupid whether its online or off. Its beginning to look like a trend or a fad that will never be out of style; like a pair of all white Nike Air-force Ones.

I was watching a full Episode of Steve Wilkos on Youtube and it was about this 34 year old man dating two minors and getting one pregnant, it was called ‘I have sex with teenage girls’. The man that these kids were in love with and wanted to be with was a total idiot. I can’t call the kids idiots because being a kid is enough of a reason. He had the mentality of a 17 year old naive boy that sits in front of a television and idolizes his “role-models” on BET. Speech impediment or not, he was in his right mind and he knew what he was saying. Well, here’s a part of the episode I was watching:

It was so hard to stop watching because his idiocy and naivety was amazing. His voice began to piss me off the moment he came out on stage. I just sat there and thought who the hell gave birth to this idiot and what do they look like? Then I looked at the girls that was so in love with this clown and was wondering what the hell did they see in him? This man is 34 years old and he’s messing with minors so its obvious everything isn’t all there. What a shame; and it saddens me that there are more like him walking this planet like being an idiot is what’s in this season. Anyway this isn’t just about his old ass chasing young tail, this is about the level of idiocy I’ve ran across in the past week. I’m completely baffled that there are so many people out there who enjoy being stupid. Can they be that naive that they cannot see that they’re stupid?

Well look at this:

Someone of a different race had called someone black a nigger and here come this idiot correcting him like it’ll make that much of a difference. Nigger and Nigga are the same thing in my book, no matter who remixes it to make it sound that much less of a slur. What baffles me is the fact that someone actually sat down and thought, “hey I can make something good out of the word nigger, lets just replace the ‘e’ and the ‘r’ with an ‘a’”. Well whoever decided that it was “good” to remix a racial slur to benefit them are idiots. Why would anyone want to be a figment of a racial slur or want to use that word in their own way? What good has came out of both the words nigger and nigga? Absolutely nothing that’s what! I’ll never understand the logic behind the idiot who thought nigga was better than nigger.

BET recently announced its nominees for its Hip-Hop Awards. Of course all of the usual suspects appe

BET recently announced its nominees for its Hip-Hop Awards. Of course all of the usual suspects appeared multiple times, including Kanye West, Eminem, Jay-Z and Lil Wayne.

Newcomer Drake scored three nods: MVP of the Year, Lyricist of the Year and Rookie of the Year. How did a relative unknown from Canada become one of the most in-demand names in the rap industry?

Well, after a series of mixtapes and being featured on the network’s 106 & Park, Drake was romantically linked to Rihanna, though their “relationship” seems to have been nothing more than a rumor. He affiliated himself with Lil Wayne’s clique, Young Money, and embarked on a tour, despite hurting his knee. He even appeared on 2009’s BET Awards and had a single climb all the way to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 (“Best I Ever Had”).

Not bad feats for the soon-to-be 23-year-old and worthy ammo for a Rookie of the Year nomination. But will he win when the awards are broadcast on October 27? 72% of voting Predicto Mobile players say yes!

[Ed. note: I am a staff writer at HipHopDX.com, and consider Andreas Hale an outstanding writer, colleague and brethren in this closeknit fraternity that is hip-hop journalism]

Parting isn’t always sweet sorrow. In journalism, in particular, it can be a very acrimonious affair. I’ve been let go from several jobs and quit one, and each and every one of those times I had strong feelings towards my ex-employers. Whether it was a difference in editorial focus, whether we liked one another or office politics, the result was always that there was always a lot to say. In some instances, I have turned to the great platform that is the Internet to speak my mind. It was both a great and a horrible idea, since I’ve discovered that bloggers – in particular, idiots who blog – manage to twist your words, misrepresent facts and sensationzalize.

Still, there’s nothing like speaking your mind. That’s exactly what Andreas Hale, an esteemed hip-hop journalist who worked as assistant editor at HipHopSite.com, contributed to The Source and helped propel HipHopDX.com to top of sites of its kind as editor in chief, did today. His most recent position was as executive editor, music, at BET.com, a kushy position in New York City that reportedly paid more than $100,000 annually. Andreas is not just no longer at BET.com, but he also has some sharp words for his former employers. Below is the letter he wrote in full:

To friends, colleagues and those that should know,

As of today (September 8, 2009) I am no longer the Executive Editor of Music at BET.com.

Upon entering the position at BET I said that I needed one year to see what really went on inside the belly of the beast. I needed 365 days to sleep with the enemy and infiltrate the system. One year to see if they REALLY wanted change at BET.

As someone who has been critical of BET for many years, it surprised many that I would leave my post at HipHopDX last year to take a position at BET. But it was an opportunity I absolutely had to take. I could no longer be critical of this company without accepting the opportunity to change it when given. Although I was hired to bring about change, I was systematically shut down. I wasn’t hired to make noise, I was hired to be silenced.

The truth of the matter is that everything that you thought was wrong with BET is true.

Over the past year I’ve seen a lot to reinforce my position that BET is too far gone in the negative to turn into a positive. We have all always thought the worst, but to actually see it in action is another thing in its entirety. The unprofessionalism, the tom foolery, the favors, the misappropriation of resources, the bad ideas that reinforce negative stereotypes, the emasculation of men, the meetings that break down in full fledged cursing battles, the unpaid overtime, the tears from employees scared for their underpaid and overworked positions and ultimately the unwillingness to change are all harsh realities that I’ve witnessed firsthand.

That is not to say that there aren’t some good people who have sat in the offices of BET. Unfortunately, the good people are not in positions of power to instill any change. Instead, they work their fingers to the bone just to keep their jobs in this harsh economic climate. The other good people ran out of the door as soon as an another employment opportunity presented itself. To say BET was a revolving door would be an understatement.

I came in with a plan to provide balance and to deliver good music to the masses and help make BET relevant again – at least in the dot com world. Those attempts were shut down by out of touch executives who run a dot com but could barely turn on a computer. By those who judge their metrics by page views over absolute unique visitors (that‘s ad sales talk). By those who simply don’t understand the internet.

They brought me in because of my track record but never once took a look at my body of work. If they did, they would have known that I was the pen behind editorials such as “BET’s Coon Picnic” or were aware of the many times I have been critical of their award shows and programming. All they knew is that I played a major role in making a once unknown website into a online media outlet that surpassed theirs and they wanted a piece of the action. Too bad they never researched who I really was.

During my tenure I worked long hours and sometimes succeeded at bringing in decent content to try to reflect the change I wanted to achieve. But it wasn’t without opposition. While some interviews and content initiatives were able to make it through, many others were either shut down or met with ridicule. I offered ideas to incorporate the blog world and to spotlight new talent before MTV did. Those ideas were met with comments such as “This isn’t HipHopDX” or “You don’t know what you are talking

about.”

BET is not about the quality of your work. Rather, BET is about the relationships you have with powerful people within the company. BET is not about challenging. Instead, BET is about accepting and saying “yes.” If you have known or followed me over the years, you would know that these are things that simply are not in my character and ultimately resulted in my removal.

For the artists and labels that I have worked with for years, I tried. I did whatever I could to achieve that balance many of us wanted to see happen. To the writers who wanted to writer for BET, I made an attempt but was never given a budget to work with.

Upon my arrival, I was told I would be given a staff. Not true. I had a staff of one to carry out daily operations on a website. I fought tooth and nail to accomplish the minimum (an embeddable player and a site people could navigate) and was constantly brushed off. It was a position that was set up for failure. But I endured as long as I could.

Alas, I have been removed from my position after infiltrating the system and the timing was perfect. I wasn’t let go because the site’s numbers were down. Not because I didn’t work hard. Simply because of a personality clash with an individual whose proverbial ass I didn’t kiss enough. Again, not about the work you do but about the relationships you keep and the sides you take.

I’d like to thank BET for covering the cost of my relocation to bring me to the great city of New York/New Jersey. I’d also like to thank them for putting me in close quarters with people who think like me and will hopefully work with in the near future. I’d also like to thank them for providing me enough controversial content that I observed firsthand and will make for many tales to be told.

I said it and I meant in: One year to either make changes or move on. I left HipHopDX on September 16th 2008. Today is September 8, 2009. Eight days short of a year. Most thought I wouldn’t even last that long. But in that year I’ve had my greatest fears about Black Entertainment Television affirmed.

There is so much wrong with BET that I’d rather not break it down in a single email.

It is pretty good fodder for a book don’t you think?

As of today, Andreas Hale is a free agent.

Having read this, I sent one of my HipHopDX colleagues this AIM: “He’s either crazy or revolutionary. I hope it’s the latter.” As I’ve mentioned above, I can relate to the angst of being shown the door – or as was the case with The Source, not getting paid – and deciding to air it out. However good it feels, it has potentially devastating consequences on the writer, proportional to the size and profile of the employer. In Andreas’ case, he chose to go against Black Entertainment Television, a unit of Viacom, one, if not the, largest media conglomerates in the world. Clearly, he is both reckless and brave, taking a chance on speaking his mind, undoubtedly knowing that he’s in the David in this match-up against Goliath.

Quite frankly, nothing that Andreas said surprises me, and even his audacity to say it doesn’t surprise me. BET’s reputation was shaky with the hip-hop inclined before and after Bob Johnson sold it to Viacom (Aaron McGruder, anyone?) and this is just another confirmation.

Although I am looking forward to hearing BET’s response, which I will surely post here, I salute Andreas for having the courage to say what he feels, when he feels it.

Being politically correct never brought about change.

For over three months, the heads of programming at BET have been trying to extend the life span of “The Game.” Once it was clear that The CW Television Network was not going to renew the series, supporters of the show lobbied for BET to pick up the show.

BET has been criticized for years because of their programming. It seemed that they had finally turned the corner with their sitcom, “Somebodies,” but it was quietly cancelled by the network. Going after “The Game” is the network’s only chance at redemption.

The only thing standing between “The Game”s fourth season is a deal that BET can afford. They have been trying to reduce the price of the show’s episodes, but in this economic state, that would be fairly difficult for the network to accomplish.

BET is definitely interested in picking up “The Game,” CBS Paramount TV is the hold up.

The rapper confirmed the pregnancy during a radio interview in Los Angeles. “Lauren London, she fine,” Los Angeles Power 106 jock Fuzzy said to Wayne. “She [is] very pregnant with your baby.”

“Very pregnant, yes,” responded Wayne. Fuzzy then offered congratulations to the Cash Money star, and he gladly accepted.

Lil Wayne and London, who co-starred with T.I. in “ATL”, had been spotted together publicly over the past couple of months, but it was never confirmed if the two were dating or just friends.

Last year, Wayne announced the birth of his first son during the 2008 BET Hip-Hop Awards. The mother of Dwayne Michael Carter III was not identified, but gossip blogs found pictures of the woman, who is a college student in Cincinnati.
