1. dark matter: the force that holds stars in the sky. it can be proven in several ways: dark matter neither absorbs or emits light, scientist can observe it by measuring the effects of its gravity. this can be easily seen when two galaxies collide. Scientist use special telescopes to detect the location and amount of mass during the collision. Most of this mass is hot gas, which is the energy emitted during the collision. The other majority of mass is stars. All of this mass is contained in the galaxies. However, the force of dark matter keeps the stars (visible matter) separated. This dark matter is directly related to dark energy (the force that is propelling the universe’s expansion).
2. DARK ENERGY:
how can we know how big the universe is? we observe white dwarfs (the standard for light in the universe) to see how much light they emit. ["Because all white dwarfs achieve the same mass before exploding, they all achieve the same luminosity and can be used by astronomers as "standard candles."" (NASA)] By observing the light we can conclude their distance (using the 1/r2 law). By knowing the distance, we can know how long ago they occurred, by looking at their wave length and intensity of light. When scientists searched for these supernovae they expected that the expansion of the universe would be slowing (stars would be brighter–closer to us) but instead the supernovae was much dimmer, suggesting that they are father away… hence the conclusion of THE UNIVERSE IS GROWING!
3. Cosmic Microwaves (not just for popcorn): cosmic microwave background indicate that the Universe has a flat geometry. Except there is not enough matter in the universe to produce this plain. Dark energy is the “stuff” that must fill the vast reaches of mostly empty space in the universe in order to be able to make space accelerate in its expansion. In this sense, it is a “field” just like an electric field or a magnetic field, both of which are produced by electromagnetic energy.
4. however, there must be something more propelling the universe. if scientist measure the supernovae from the beginning of the universe, then there are other stars beyond those, which our telescopes cannot see. this would lead me to conclude there is a black hole from the first gravitational collapse of a star, when our universe was only a few million of years old. This star would have been massive, larger than any star we know of today (Pistol Star is the largest). It’s mass would result in a huge supernova and BAM the primordial black hole. …

The other day, I was talking to my wife Anna about that no good asshole she left me for and she said “He’s light years beyond you Harry, don’t even compare yourself to him!”

I just slapped her face right there. First of all, anyone who thinks that light years are a unit of measurement for how poor of a husband I am clearly doesn’t understand the basics of physics. Light years describe how time is relative to light. This is similar to using “dog years” to describe your beloved pet’s rapid decrepidation. And a light year is roughly the length of time it takes for the universe to begin and then end. Kind of a useless measurement for us humans in my opinion.

Particle Physicists (More like particle suckacists! Zing!) have debated about the nature of light for the last few years. Is it a particle or is it a wave? Since this question isn’t being hotly debated by wave physicists, I am going to assume that the particle physicists are a bunch of biased bastards. There has actually been a number of rigorous studies done to determine this. Some indicated it was a wave. Some indicated it was a particle. The lazy conclusion they came to was that light was both a particle AND a wave. Ok, before you call them all idiots for arriving at such a counterintuitive notion, let me tell you about how they found this out. You’ll laugh even harder.

Anyway, let me go into the detail of this horrible Freudian-projected nightmare. The scientist would tell you that if you have a photon entering two slits, then it could theoretically interfere with itself if you do not observe it. If you do observe it, then the photon will not interfere with itself. This is all just some bullshit fantasy that if your wife doesn’t observe you having sex with two other women, it’s okay, since there’s some kind of penile (represented by photons) interference. Jeez scientists, grow up!

Its so patently obvious that this is the Freudian expression of the scientist’s desire for an adulterous threesome. One in which his penis interferes with itself. Guess what science guys, I tried that excuse, but my wife still won’t return my calls. Kind of punches a hole in your logic, don’t you think?

Back in the day, scientists wanted to know if there was this luminiferous ether that light travelled through. They never found the luminiferous ether! No shit, you particle dumbassicists! Didn’t you read Genesis chapter 1? God spoke and He bespoke light. Clearly light is supernatural in origin. You dipshiticists. However, to be fair, science was right about there needing to be a medium for light to travel through. You see, sound can’t travel in a vacuum. And since light is composed of God Voice Particles (GVP), any over-arching theory of cosmology has to include something like deity air (not some stupid ether!) for the sound particles to travel through.

My colleagues, occasionally secular godless science can be right. One thing physicists got right was when they said that at the speed of light (you know, 9,999 miles per hour), time does not pass, so light experiences no aging just like God. So clearly light could have only originated from God. My goodness, what do these jerks at MIT do all day not to realize that ageless particles prove their own origin – their own origin being that of God!

Speaking of time coming to a stop, there’s this stupid theory called Relativation Theory (you’d think it would be about relatives or something) that says that time slows down as you approach the speed of light. Let me tell you, I tried driving really fast in my car, and not only did time not slow down, but it actually seemed to pass faster as it didn’t take as long to get to my work. I was 20 minutes early! Wow, who came up with such a terrible theory?

Another claim by physicists is that light can’t escape a black hole. How absurd! Being the natural skeptic that I am, I went into my backyard where there are plenty of holes. I tossed a mirror down one and shone my flashlight into the hole. The beam of photons bounced right back out. Maybe the scientist that came up with this theory fell down a crevasse as a kid or was just really scared of the dark. Seems like astronomy might be a bad field to work in for you guys.

Light is actually not as complex as people think it is. The mainstream opinion is that humans only percieve a limited spectrum of light known as the “visible” and that there is also “Infrared”, “Ultraviolet,” “Radio,” “X-Rays,” and a bunch of other satanic beams of light rays. The truth is that scientists saw their funding drying up after they discovered Red through Purple and went ahead and made up some new kinds of light.

Let me conclude on this note. A particle physicist once asked me if a cat in some box was dead or alive due to some quantum mechanical mumbo jumbo aptly named Schumaker’s Cat. What a stupid question. I kill my neighbor’s cats routinely by boxing them up and tossing them into a river. So I’m fairly certain that most of the time when a cat is in a box, it is dead. Especially after I run it over with my Ford truck! In the interest of testing this ridiculous claim, I took the litter of kittens my neighbor was trying to find a home for and put them all in a box. Well, big disappointment. They took a whole day and a half to die, and no matter how many times I observed them they never came back to life.

Do you really want to believe a bunch of eggheads who are afraid of the dark, like to cheat on their wives, think cats can come back to life literally, and ask you stupid riddles about dead cats?

You may remember this post recently about the book I’m working on called Black Hole. Well, I’ve been working on it for the past month or so, and am beginning to accumulate quite a few pages. I’m so excited about it, that I couldn’t resist giving you a little more of it—and bringing you into the world of what I think is best described as an adult fairytale.

It feels amazing to be working on this book—it is so much of me—the story, the drawings, the individual words—that every time I work on it, the work fills me up. I suppose I could say this about much of my art, but there are some pieces that really run deep. This is one of them. It is like nothing else to be doing work that lives so deep in you. It is an experience that goes beyond any job or career.

I realize that while it would be nice if someone else wanted to look at it, or if I could sell many copies once it is finished, I would make it even if no one else was ever going to see it. I need to make it that much. This is the kind of work I want to always be doing—this is what I want to drive my life—experiences that feel like this.

Science editor Mark Henderson has a story on the Times Online’s blog Eureka about what could be the largest representative action ever filed in the history of the world.  The complaint, filed with the UN Human Rights Committee, seeks to save every inhabitant of the planet (and perhaps the entire solar system) from what could be imminent annihilation if CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in Switzerland creates micro-black holes when it begins to smash subatomic particles together at near light speed this month.  The complaint was filed by a group calling itself ConCERNed International, who seeks to enjoin the project until CERN’s scientists can prove that there is no chance that the collider will pose a danger in the form a “mass production” of “microscopic black holes.”  The UN Human Rights complaint follows an unsuccessful civil lawsuit last year filed in Federal Court in Hawaii attempting to enjoin operation of the collider.

For those about the run into the streets screaming in panic, the LHC has been the subject of a comprehensive safety study, and physicists agree that there is little danger of world destruction by black hole, strangelets, magnetic monopoles, or anything else.  Henderson paraphrases Michio Kaku in saying

there is a chance that the LHC could produce a black hole, but only in the sense that there is a chance that it could produce fire-breathing dragons.

 

The prospects of success in the case are probably worse than the chances of either black holes or fire-breathing dragons.  As far as I can tell, even assuming that creating a risk of global destruction by black hole is considered a violation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights,  the Committee does not appear to have authority to enter or enforce any kind of injunction that would shut down the LHC.

For now, the there is no true global forum for claims of global concern, even those of apocalyptic proportions.

Saat ini merebak luas kontroversi tentang film 2012 yang berisi tentang peristiwa kiamat pada tahun 2012. Film yang kini laris manis di seluruh dunia itu bisa dilihat versi thriller-nya di Youtube. Dibesut oleh sutradara asal Jerman, Roland Emmerich, film itu mendasarkan klaim kiamatnya pada perhitungan kalender Long Count yang digunakan Suku Maya. Sebagian orang akhirnya percaya bahwa tanggal itu akan terjadi kiamat yang mengakhiri kehidupan di dunia, lantas dimulai kehidupan yang baru.

Suku Maya sendiri memang dikenal memiliki pengetahuan astronomi kuno. Suku ini tinggal di semenanjung Yucatan, Amerika Tengah yang berbatasan dengan Samudera Pasifik di sebelah barat, dan Laut Karibia di sebelah timur. Pada zaman batu (250 M hingga 925 M), suku Maya mencapai kejayaan di bidang teknologi seperti teknik bangunan (Chichen Itza), pertanian (kanal drainase), tanaman jagung dan latex, sumur yang disebut “cenotes”. Pada saat itu, mereka juga sudah melek huruf dan memiliki sistem penulisan sendiri.

Spekulasi tentang peristiwa kiamat tersebut bisa ditelusuri pada edisi pertama buku berjudul The Maya (1966) karya Michael D. Coe. Menurut Coe, pada tanggal 24 Desember 2011, dipercaya oleh suku Maya akan terjadi Armageddon yang memusnahkan manusia dan menghancurkan seluruh alam semesta. Tanggal ini menjadi tema pembahasan oleh Frank Waters dalam karyanya Mexico Mystique: The Coming Sixth World of Consciousness (1975). Waters bahkan mempersembahkan dua bab tentang interpretasi hal tersebut. Ia juga menguraikan suatu bagan astrologis yang menjelaskan perihal tanggal tersebut serta kaitannya dengan ramalan Suku Indian Hopi, salah satu suku asli Amerika yang tinggal di timur laut Arizona.

Meski tidak dikemukakan tanggal pastinya, petunjuk bahwa terjadi “kiamat” pada tahun 2012 disebutkan pula oleh Jose Arguelles dalam The Transformative Vision: Reflections on the Nature and History of Human Expression (1975). Meski tidak mendasarkan pada referensi dari literatur kuno bangsa Maya, Terence McKenna dan Dennis McKenna juga mengemukakan “kiamat” pada tahun 2012 dalam karya mereka, The Invisible Landscape: Mind, Hallucinogens, and the I Ching (1975).

Buku Waters di atas juga mengilhami spekulasi lebih lanjut tentang hal ini pada pertengahan tahun 1980-an. McKennas, Arguelles, dan John Major Jenkins kemudian merevisi tahun kiamat pada tahun 2011 yang diutarakan oleh Waters. Ketiga ilmuwan tersebut menghubungkan peristiwa “kiamat” dengan peristiwa solstice di musim dingin yang diperkirakan terjadi pada tahun 2012. Solstice sendiri adalah peristiwa astronomis yang terjadi dua kali setiap tahun, ketika kemiringan sumbu bumi sangat dekat ke arah atau menjauh dari matahari, yang menyebabkan posisi matahari jelas terlihat di langit.

Penjelasan tentang tahun 2012 sebagai tahun “kiamat” menjadi tema spekulasi lebih lanjut yang diutarakan oleh Jose Arguelles dalam bukunya The Mayan Factor: Path Beyond Technology (1987) yang dipromosikan pada acara Harmonic Connvergence (1987). Tema ini kemudian dielaborasi dengan teori Novelty oleh Terence McKenna. Teori tersebut merupakan hasil interpretasi McKenna terhadap urutan (sequence) yang dirumuskan oleh Raja Wen dalam kitab kuno China, I Ching.

Sesuai interpretasinya tersebut, McKenna membuat grafik tentang terjadinya periode besar pembaruan alam semesta sesuai dengan pergeseran besar dalam evolusi manusia, baik secara biologis maupun budaya. Ia percaya, suatu peristiwa besar tertentu akan berulang kembali dan berkaitan dengan peristiwa serupa yang terjadi di waktu yang lain. McKenna merujuk kepada peristiwa bom atom Hiroshima sebagai dasar untuk meramalkan peristiwa “kiamat” yang bakal terjadi pada bulan November 2012.

Dalam karyanya Maya Cosmogenesis 2012: The True Meaning of the Maya Calendar End-Date (1998) dan Galactic Alignment:The Transformation of Consciousness According to Mayan, Egyptian, and Vedic Traditions (2002), Jenkins juga menyebutkan ramalan tentang terjadinya astronomical conjuction yang menimpa lubang hitam (black hole) di tengah galaksi bimasakti. Peristiwa itu juga diiringi dengan fenomena solstice di musim dingin tanggal 21 Desember 2012. Astronomial conjuction sendiri adalah peristiwa di mana dua benda langit muncul saling berdekatan satu sama lain dan tampak terlihat di angkasa dari suatu tempat, biasa di bumi. Fenomena juga terkadang disebut appulse.

Peristiwa ini sebenarnya sudah diprediksi para ahli astronomi kuno dari Suku Maya dan beberapa bangsa lain. Jenkins sendiri menyatakan bahwa pengetahuan astronomi Suku Maya tersebut berdasarkan hasil observasi terhadap “celah gelap” (dark rift) di bimasakti sebagaimana yang bisa terlihat dari bumi. Sebagian ilmuwan dari Suku Maya percaya bahwa celah gelap itu merupakan pintu masuk menuju Xibalba. Dalam mitologi bangsa Maya, Xibalba dipercaya sebagai sebuah tempat di bawah dunia yang dihuni oleh para dewa kematian dan para pengikutnya. Sebagian ilmuwan Maya lain percaya bahwa hal tersebut merupakan bukti bahwa pengetahuan mereka diperoleh melalui kontak gaib dengan kecerdasan ekstraterestrial.

Berdasarkan penelitian modern tentang “celah gelap” (dark rift) yang dihubungkan dengan kepercayaan Amerika Kuno dan masyarakat tradisional Maya, hal itu masih menuai perdebatan yang sengit. Para arkeolog menolak semua teori tentang kontak ekstraterestrial tersebut. Namun yang jelas, kepercayaan bangsa Maya secara tidak langsung dipromosikan melalui kontroversi kiamat 2012 ini. Pada gilirannya, hal ini juga menimbulkan adanya evolusi dalam kepercayaan sinkretis di tengah masyarakat Maya kontemporer.

Bantahan terhadap Isu Kiamat 2012

Sebagian ilmuwan membantah peristiwa kiamat pada tahun 2012 yang dikaitkan dengan ramalan suku Maya. Sebagian besar para ilmuwan yang khusus meneliti tentang peradaban Maya juga berpendapat bahwa wacana Long Count kalender Suku Maya yang berakhir pada tahun 2012 merupakan suatu gambaran yang salah tentang sejarah Maya. Di masyarakat modern Maya sendiri, wacana kiamat 2012 sendiri sudah tidak lagi relevan. Literatur-literatur klasik Maya yang membahas masalah ini juga juga sangat langka dan saling bertentangan. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa kecil kemungkinan adanya kesepakatan yang umum dipercayai oleh Suku Maya tentang hal tersebut.

Sesepuh suku Maya, Apolinario Chili Pixtun, dan arkeolog Mexico, Guillermo Bernal, menyatakan bahwa “kiamat” hanya memiliki sedikit keterkaitan bahkan tidak ada keterkaitan sama sekali dengan keyakinan suku Maya. Bernal percaya bahwa ide-ide tentang kiamat tersebut telah disisipkan oleh orang Barat pada keyakinan orang Maya. Hal itu karena di kalangan orang Barat sendiri, konsep kiamat sudah banyak yang tidak mempercayainya

Menurut Maya Linda Schele dan David Freidel, bangsa Maya sendiri tidak menganggap bahwa pada tahun 2012 itu merupakan akhir penciptaan seperti yang sering diungkapkan. Di masyarakat Maya saat ini pun, ramalan di tahun 2012 tidaklah dianggap sesuatu yang penting. Meski di beberapa suku Maya yang tinggal di dataran tinggi Guatemala, kalender Long Count masih dipergunakan. Jose Huchm, arkeolog yang meneliti suku Maya, juga menyatakan, “Saat aku pergi ke beberapa masyarakat berbahasa Maya dan bertanya tentang tanggapan mereka terhadap apa yang terjadi pada tahun 2012, mereka sendiri justru tidak tahu. Apakah dunia akan berakhir pada tahun itu? Mereka sendiri tidak percaya.”

The modern technology is exponentially advanced that we started to witness the remnants of creation. However, human ego hasn’t caught up yet. I frequently meet people who still believe in anthropic stupidity, irreducible complexity and so on.

A couple of months ago, I used to get clear night sky once or twice a month! I must mention, Singapore is the worst place to view the stars. Sometimes you get all of the celestial objects obstructed by light pollution even when the sky was actually clear, I guess mainly by a nearby stadium fixture in my case.

Well, there was this constellation Centaurus that I was interested in. When the city lights blot out most of the fainter stars, the brighter ones look dimmer. It makes you so desperate that you will start to pick up many faint celestial objects and ascertain the allegorical drawing in your mind that make up the constellation, you get it wrong? try again, still not clear? that settles it, get your comforter and go to bed, may be you can dream one.

Anyway, there was one night I got a clear view of most of the constellations, it made me feel like calling somebody and ask them to look at it, and tell them what they are looking at. How far are those stars. How big are them. How many known black holes out there. How many known exo-planets and how many earth-like planets. How many solar systems like ours.

Gazing up on the celestial firmament with a little knowledge of what you are looking at, leaves you with a sense of awe and wonder.

Take for instance, NGC 4696. At an estimated distance of 150 million light years in the Centaurus constellation. To give you a flavor how far you are, if you travel at the speed of 186,000 miles per second (an impossibility confirmed by the laws of physics), it will take 150,000,000 years to reach this place! The blue bubble you you see around the white area is around 10,000 light years across! The white area surrounds the super massive black hole.

Imagine that you are on a mission looking for a habitable planet. You might be travelling at a very high velocity through the outerspace for a long boring journey. One fine day, without any prior warning, you get a greeting message.  “Welcome to NGC 4696, you just crossed the point of no return!”

What does that mean?

That means you are done. You are finished. There is no coming back! Had you not received that welcome message, you would’ve happily continued your journey without a slightest comprehension of this imminent danger. 

Here is the story,

It started from the late eighteenth century, when a French Physicist asked a remarkable question. Are there stars so massive and dense that light itself could not escape their gravitational pull? If they existed wouldn’t they be completely dark and therefore invisible?

From the earth, if a Projectile is thrown-up at a velocity of 25,000 miles per hour, it will escape earths’ gravitational pull and reach the outerspace. So, you can conclude that earths’ escape velocity 25,000 miles per hour. A black hole is nothing but a body with so large mass with so small a size and so densly collapsed that escape velocity exceeds the speed of light. How dense? Well if Sun were to be a black hole, it has to be squeezed to a radius of just two miles! And that kicks off an irreversible implosion and Sun goes into a kind of free fall until it hits the Singularity.  And the two miles radius (Schwarzchild radius) we were talking about was the point-of-no-return (event horizon), This is the border you crossed before getting the welcome message.

Doing a bit of homework before any stargazing makes it more enjoyable. It makes you feel how small and insignificant we are living a fragile island of life on a tiny and lonely speck.

We now wield the paintbrush. The atmosphere as a thin layer of varnish. Life itself is just a thin coat of paint on this planet. And we’re the ones that hold the paintbrush.

Those who favor Anthropic stupidity only belittle the universe. Here is a quote from Carl Sagan “The Universe seems neither benign nor hostile, merely indifferent.”

Any human concerns seem insignificant and silly. May be that’s why astronomy is found to be a humbling and character building experience.

Hooray!   The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in Europe has switched back on after being offline for a year…

Europe: Proton beams circulate in Big Bang machine

GENEVA – Scientists switched on the world’s largest atom smasher Friday night for the first time since the $10 billion machine suffered a spectacular failure more than a year ago.

It took a year of repairs before beams of protons circulated late Friday in the Large Hadron Collider for the first time since it was heavily damaged by a simple electrical fault.

Circulation of the beams was a significant leap forward. The European Organization for Nuclear Research has taken the restart of the collider step by step to avoid further setbacks as it moves toward new scientific experiments — probably starting in January — regarding the makeup of matter and the universe.

And, as I’ve blogged about before, where there is science being done by physicists via particle accelerators like the LHC, there are also pseudoscientific nuts who maintain that it’s going to destroy the Earth. Balderdash! Here are 3 good reasons why the LHC experiments are no danger to our planet.

I should also point out one more piece of good news regarding the re-starting of the LHC: despite all of the doomsday scenarios by the conspiracy-mongering pseudoscientists – the Earth survived

Recently I’ve given my students two extra credit options:

1. Make a Google Map that highlights the 13 original colonies.  The need to embed a picture in the place mark and give relevant information about the uniqueness of that colony.
2. Create a video that can be uploaded to Youtube that shows them acting out either colonists who wish to separate away from Great Britain, or Loyalists who can’t understand why the colonists would ever want to do such a thing.

My reasoning behind these options was simple (I’m a big fan of lists):

1. If and when I give extra credit, I don’t like giving out simple worksheets they could have done when they were in second grade (they’re now eighth graders).  If they want extra credit, they’ve got to work for it.  And by working for it, they need to really demonstrate their learning to me.
2. I wanted them to do something they can share with others.  If their video of the Boston Massacre is so good, other students should be able to learn from it to, so why not share it?

Some of my student’s jumped were on board with this idea from the word go, while others looked at me cross-eyed.  I think the notion that I was asking them to create something other people can learn from was an idea that has rarely occurred to them.

Or been asked of them.

Which, to me, is a problem.

I don’t fancy myself a space age George Carlin, but I do think there’s got to be a reason why some students resist sharing what they’ve learned with newer technologies.

Learning should not be done in the chasm of a black hole, confined to one person.  Why be selfish with what you’ve learned?  Self conscious, maybe, but not selfish.  I think it prudent that teachers not only educate their students on the difference between the two, but to teach them to be self-confident enough in their work that other people would actually want to see it.  Can you imagine how motivation might change if that were to happen?  Students may actually want to do projects to demonstrate their learning instead of putting them off until they last second only to turn in sub par work.

Learning is not done in a black hole.

I keep on buying spoons , forks , small knives and these small items keep on vanishing into thin air … with no trace of them whatsoever ..

Misteri Lubang Hitam (Black Hole)

Misteri lubang hitam yang bertebaran di jagad raya dikatakan hampir mirip dengan konsep rentetan kejadian-kejadian aneh nan misterius yang terjadi di kawasan Segitiga Bermuda .

Tapi berbeda dengan kasus-kasus di Segitiga Bermuda yang rata-rata menelan kapal laut maupun pesawat terbang , lubang hitam itu bisa dikatakan lebih hebat lagi , ia digambarkan berbentuk lubang gravitasi yang ukurannya dapat lebih luas/besar daripada matahari , serta ia mampu menarik dan menelan apa saja yang berada didekatnya , termasuk planet-planet. Bahkan partikel cahayapun tidak mampu untuk meloloskan diri dari tarikan gravitasi lubang hitam yang super dasyat.

Misteri yang menyelubungi terjadinya fenomena lubang hitam bagaimanapun juga hanya mampu dikaji dari jauh , lantaran kemampuan sains dan teknologi manusia masih belum mampu membawa mereka menghampiri lubang itu.

Teori lubang hitam dikemukakan lebih dua ratus tahun lalu. Pada 1783 , ilmuwan Barat , John Mitchell mencetuskan teori mengenai kemungkinan wujudnya sebuah lubang hitam setelah beliau meneliti dan mengkaji teori gravitasi Isaac Newton.

Beliau berpendapat , jika objek yang dilemparkan tegak lurus ke atas , maka ia akan terlepas dari pengaruh gravitasi Bumi setelah mencapai kecepatan lebih dari 11 kilometer perdetik, maka tentu ada planet atau bintang lain yang memiliki gravitasi lebih besar daripada Bumi.

Istilah ‘lubang hitam’ pertama kali digunakan oleh ahli fisika Amerika Serikat , John Archibald Wheeler pada 1968. Wheeler memberi nama demikian kerana lubang hitam tidak dapat dilihat , kerana cahaya turut tertarik ke dalamnya sehingga kawasan disekitarnya menjadi gelap.

Menurut teori evolusi bintang, lubang hitam berasal dari sejenis bintang biru yang memiliki suhu permukaan lebih dari 25,000 derajat celcius. Ketika pembakaran hidrogen di bintang biru yang memakan waktu kira-kira 10 juta tahun selesai, ia menjadi bintang biru raksasa.

Kemudian, bintang itu menjadi dingin dan menjadi bintang merah raksasa. Dalam fase itulah, akibat tarikan gravitasi-nya sendiri, bintang merah raksasa mengalami ledakan dahsyat atau disebut dengan Supernova dan menghasilkan dua jenis bintang yaitu bintang Netron dan lubang hitam.

Berdasarkan pengamatan ahli-ahli astronomi dari Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics , Jerman , pernah menyaksikan sebuah bintang yang mendekati lubang hitam raksasa dan akhirnya lenyap ditelan.

Lubang hitam raksasa yang berhasil disaksikan tersebut berada di pusat galaksi RX J1242-11 yang berjarak 700 juta tahun cahaya dari Bumi. Bintang itu memiliki ukuran sebesar Matahari sistem tata surya kita.

Bintang tersebut hancur sedikit demi sedikit dan ditarik ke dalam lubang selama beberapa hari. Pada tahap awal , ia kehilangan gas-gas yang berada di sekelilingnya.

Setelah itu, bintang tersebut menjadi lebih panas jutaan darajat celcius dan ahirnya hilang ditelan lubang hitam. Dalam proses itu, ia melepaskan tenaga yang sangat kuat yaitu setara dengan tenaga yang dihasilkan pada ledakan Supernova.

Ahli astronomi dapat memperkirakan kedudukan lubang hitam dengan cara memperhatikan cahaya di sekitar bintang ataupun gas di angkasa.

Apabila suatu tempat di angkasa luar tidak ditemui cahaya tetapi di sekitarnya terdapat banyak objek-objek angkasa menuju ke satu titik dengan kecepatan tinggi sebelum ahirnya menghilang, maka titik tersebut tidak lain adalah lubang hitam.

Terdapat banyak lubang hitam di seluruh semesta ini , malah ada teori yang mengatakan di galaksi Bima Sakti juga terdapat sebuah lubang hitam!

Lalu adakah kemungkinan jika nantinya matahari beserta planet-planet yang mengelilinginya termasuk bumi akan tertelan oleh lubang hitam tersebut?

Saat ini , ahli astronomi memberikan jawaban, tidak! kerana dibandingkan dengan Lubang hitam pada galaksi lain-nya, sifat lubang hitam di Galaksi Bima Sakti dikatakan sedang dalam keadaan tenang.

Misteri yang menyelubungi lubang hitam akan terus menarik minat para ahli astronomi untuk terus meneliti-nya sehingga mendapatkan suatu jawaban yang memuaskan. Selagi manusia belum mampu menjelajah jauh ke luar angkasa, maka jawaban itu gagal diperoleh dan berbagai teori tanpa bukti akan terus dikemukakan untuk memecahkan misteri alam semesta ini.

Charles Burns elicits feelings of discomfort, disgust, and fear by taking events that rouse empathy/sympathy within the reader and twisting these emotions with perverse overtones.  Teenage problems, sex, and dreams begin on a comfortable premise, such as Rob and Chris’s romantic escapade into the forest; however, our ability to sympathize/empathize turns to horror and anxiety as Burns injects the physical deformities that break our mold (our understanding) of a beautiful and confusing event.

One of my favorite sequences in Black Hole occurs when Jill brings a bowl of Cheetos to Pearson and his friends.  The panel begins with a get-together: beers are on the table, Dee is reaching into the bowl of snacks, and the company is in good spirits.  In fact, the text establishes the mood as something entirely un-extraordinary: “We settled in around the table and Jill brought us beers and a bowl of Cheetos”.  Dee interrupts the homely image by calling the Cheetos “orange worms” marking Burns’s style of mutating the ordinary and taking into a grislier and phantasmagoric realm: “You know what these really are? They’re little dried up alien turds! They make’em on planet Xeno”.  At this point, the Cheetos has undergone several changes, from an edible object, to an orange worm, and ending up as fecal matter belonging to aliens.

The worm is an amplification of the Cheetos’ design, Burns exaggerates its features, much like the frog’s vagina-like evisceration, or the sausage being skewered- something the readers can comprehend to some extent.  The imagery then plunges into the supernatural, almost to the point of no return: “and like they only eat orange food so all their shit’s orange”, trespassing on a boundary that splits reality from dreams.  The dialogue then takes a macroscopic approach: “The whole planet’s orange! The food, the shit! Everything!” which is regarded as bad humor by Jill and brushed aside.  The reader can view this humor in a privileged position since he can understand that the transformation of the Cheetos can be likened to the sexual “bug” that instills a vision of a shattered reality to these teenagers.

Of course, one might argue that these kids are all on L.S.D., a mind altering drug, as to say that it simply speaks to the alien nature of things within the graphic novel.  However, I will argue that the characters who view the world through altering-lenses are Burns’s way of showing the reader a version of themselves.  Like the friends who see the Cheetos in an unfamiliar way, it is the reader who sees the teenagers in an unworldly way through the design of the story.  Pearson’s friends seem to have free reign on the subject of “the bug”, making generalizations and accusations out of fear of the unknown.

I just arrived in Geneva after the red eye flight from New York. The passenger next to me, bespectacled, with a laptop and a serious attitude, started talking to me. Where are you from? Where do you live? How long were you in New York? Then he told me what he did, and my curiosity peaked. Ah, so you are one of the people who will suck us out in a black hole? I asked jokingly. He replied somberly that it was not a joke and people were suing them because of the black hole rumor. Allow me to explain, despite being so jet-lagged. The man in question works as a nuclear physicist in CERN (the European Center for Nuclear Research) where the infamous CERN accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) lies in a 27 km tunnel underground. The LHC sort of got off to a bad start for when it was attempting to re-create the big bang, it sort of blew up. My neighbor on the plane explained that outside companies had connected the magnets without soldering them properly, which is why the experiment failed. The papers carried stories at the time of the risk that the accelerator might cause a black hole to suck in, well, Geneva. I asked our physicist friend about that, and he said, yes, while there was a theory that this experiment they are working on would create a black hole, it will be short-lived. Hmmm, I am thinking we should not be anywhere near Geneva at the time of the experiment that may create a black hole, the sound of it is not too reassuring. Well, then, the best is to get inside information on when the test will happen. Friday, he said. Which Friday? I asked, with a worried look. This coming one. Oh, great. That is the Friday that we are organizing a huge event at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, so we are definitely going to be there. Now, what is left to do is pray and hope that the physicists know what they’re doing, sort of like you hope the pilot and Co-pilot of a plane during a harrowing flight know what they’re doing, and are not on a suicide mission of some sort.
Life is complicated, especially when billions are spent to experiment with something a few excited physicists think is terribly important- to simplify theories of energy, as my fellow passenger said. Not my first priority, had I been in charge of spending many billions.
Let’s hope our black hole is short-lived then, so we can enjoy the upcoming skiing season.
