Well, after a very long unexpected absence…

Here are a few things I’m lusting after.

According to the World Aids Campaign: More than two million AIDS related deaths were reported globally in 2008; two million children under the age of 15 now live with HIV. New figures released by the World Health Organization and UNAIDS estimate the number of new HIV infections have declined each year by about 17% from 2001 to 2008, but for every five people infected, only two start treatment.

The numbers remain high. Protect yourself and help others. I strongly believe that through comprehensive safer sex classes in the schools, young people will learn how to better protect and care for themselves. We cannot teach abstinence and expect our children to be safe. 

We often return to art on December 1^st. I look forward to hearing the poet Donald Hall talk and read his poetry at the University of Michigan Museum of Art tonight.

You might be interested in listening to this piece from NPR in 2006: Tory Dent’s Poetry on Life with AIDS. Tory Dent wrote poetry about the experience of living with AIDS, most famously in her collection HIV, Mon Amour. She was 47 when she died after being HIV-positive for 17 years. On the website, you can read sections of from Dent’s the title poem of her recently released collection, Black Milk.

That’s right folks! We have two of the mittens finest locked in for performances at the 6th Annual Midwest Hip Hop Summit in February right here at the University of Michigan. If their names don’t ring a bell, then they certainly will by the end of this post.

Buff 1, an Ann Abor native and University of Michigan graduate, has been making noise in the underground hip hop scene for a while now. First getting his foot in the door in 2004 with longtime high school friends and b-ball team mates, collectively known as the Athletic Mic League, Buff has since taken off as a solo artist with two critically acclaimed albums under his belt, a number of successful National and European tours, and a deafening buzz spanning the nation.

His 2007 debut album, “Pure”, gained an overwhelming following and has even been labeled a classic by critics. Okayplayer exclaims “This album, my friends, is incredible…classic like thriller jackets”. Whether it’s on the political, socially conscious, or party tip, Buff’s on it all with an honesty and integrity that mainstream Hip Hop often lacks.

Detroit’s own Black Milk is a superstar in his own right. First discovered by Slum Village’s Baatin (R.I.P.), the extremely talented emcee/producer has made a name for himself both here in the states as well as overseas while following in the foot steps of the late/great J Dilla and carrying the D on his back. A juggernaut on the boards and the mic, Black Milk’s extensive list of credits spans from work by artists such as Pharoahe Monch, Busta Rhymes, Lloyd Banks, Canibus, Mary J. Blige, KRS-One, Kidz In The Hall, Buckshot, and many others.

Black Milk began his career producing a majority of Slum Village’s post-Dilla body of work as a part of the production team, BR Gunna. However, Black didn’t gain notoriety as an emcee until his 2005 solo debut, “Sound of The City”. The album earned Black his record deal with Fat Beats, on which he also released his lauded sophomore effort, “Popular Demand” in 2007. In the wake of it’s release early in the year, XXL magazine labeled it “the first great album of 2007″.

Black has since released two albums on his own Music House label including his collaboration effort with Fat Ray, “The Set Up”, and the cross-region compilation, “Caltroit” featuring a mean line-up of artists including Ras Kass, Planet Asia, Jake One, Stat Quo, and many more. His third solo album, “Tronic”, boasts Black’s artistic growth both as an emcee and a producer, adding the element of live instrumentation and futuristic synthesizers. Check out the videos for the two singles from the album, “Losing Out” (featuring Royce Da 5′9″) and “Give the Drummer Sum” below. Also be on the look out for the Random Axe (Sean Price/Guilty Simpson/Black Milk) album due out early next year under Duck Down Records.

If you’re a true fan of Hip Hop, then Black Milk and Buff1 are collectively the remedy you’ve been yearning for. You won’t want to miss their performances on February 5, 2010.

Sorry! I couldn’t resist – this headline was just too obvious

I must admit I got a thing for tights, so I was very pleased to discover a blog dedicated to tights lovers. It’s created by James Lillis – the designer behind the Australian tights brand Black Milk. Check out his blog Too Many Tights and try not go to the online store. I pretend it doesn’t exist!

Hip hop blog YNotMyDream has just put out Beneath The Surface, a mixtape featuring a few artists that appear on this blog regularly and new ones you may have not heard of. This is also YNotMyDream’s first mixtape released through the site. Beneath The Surface is a great compilation to play around the house or while you’re in a car.

The Pre-Substance by No One (Noni Spitz & Dae One) is available for your audible enjoyment. Dae One, producer extraordinaire who has worked with Bishop Lamont, Xzibit, Kurupt, Snoop has teamed up with Noni Spitz (Taje, Sir Jinx, Terrace Martin, Bad Lucc) for a 17-track mixtape featuring Taje, Geo Brown, Mitchy Slick etc with production by Black Milk, THX, Willie B, JRK. This mixtape is mixed DJ Spintelect and serves as the prequel to their upcoming album, The Substance scheduled for release at the top of 2010.

Five favorite songs on my iTunes list that begin with “Black”:

1. “Black Barbie,” Little Jackie. “The World Should Revolve Around Me” by the same band made my holiday disc last year. Remember Imani Coppola and “Legend of a Cowgirl” (from which the screengrab at left was taken)? She returned with this new band — and according to her website is working on a new album. Her blog also pronounces fall “the sexiest season in NYC” — the season of “intellect and lucidity.”

2. “Black Is the Color of My True Love’s Hair (Jaffa Remix),” Nina Simone and Jaffa. Thing I learned about a movie I never saw: In “Point of No Return,” the American remake of “Nikita,” Bridget Fonda’s character’s nickname is Nina as a nod to Nina Simone.

3. “Black Milk,” Massive Attack.  Did you know there’s a website devoted to album covers? Sleevage discussed the “Mezzanine” cover here, and although Wikipedia claims the “beetle” in the Nick Knight photo is made from Volkswagen Beetle parts, I think that’s an error; the legs look too real. (There’s a 500-pixel version on the Sleevage website, or you can click on the thumbnail at right.) Anyway, I’m excited for the new Massive Attack album, if the new song “Psyche” is any indicator.

4. “Black Swan,” Thom Yorke. If you haven’t heard it — and I am thinking of my sisters here, specifically — the chorus of this solo release from the lead singer of Radiohead repeats:  “ ’Cause this is (dirtyword)ed up / (dirtyword)ed up.” In other words, not a contender for those days you need your mood elevated through music. (Art co-opted from the cover of the British version of the book “The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable” by Nassim Nicholas Taleb, in which he puts forth the theory that the really important events of the past were just as rare and unpredictable as black swans. (Which makes trying to forecast things like stock market trends somewhat of a folly.)

5. “Black Sweat,” Prince. By no means among my five favorite Prince songs — those would be, in alphabetical order, “Alphabet Street,” “Delirious,” “I Would Die 4 U,” “Strange Relationship” and “U Got The Look.”  But still oh so delicious.

And two favorite songs on my  iTunes list that begin with “White”:

1. “White Lilies,” Peder feat. Anne Trolle. A few years ago I was so thrilled with myself for discovering the “Hotel Costes” compilation CDs, smug with discovery … and then I walked into a Banana Republic store and one of the tracks was playing over the loudspeaker. Goodbye, hubris.
2. “White Pepper Ice Cream,” Cibo Matto. I also love their trippy version of “The Candy Man,” from the same album. I’m going to assume the reason I can’t find any version of it on YouTube is because the Sammy Davis Jr. estate is greedy about residuals. (Other songs from the same album are there.)

Weeeeeeeeeeee! Nothing gets me more pumped up than the opening of the local ski hill. Work just doesn’t seem to matter…life is on the upswing after a dreadful shoulder season in a mountain town…snow is falling.

For those of you out there who love ski season as much as me probably have similar routines that carry you through a typical day at the hill. What I have for you this week is a special little look into my ski day through the power of music.

The first is an uptempo playlist that will prep you all the way from coffee shop stop to the parking lot to the first few leg burners in the powder.  WARNING: It’s not for anyone with weak eardrums.

The second one will bring you lower in the mountain and back into the public eye. After burning the calories in the morning those pants are a little more baggy, you have your poutine swagger on, and those jugs of beer at lunch time are kicking in. So “Say Something” because I’ve heard it before but from Detroit rapper,   Black Milk,  in 08′ from his Popular Demand. Whose going to say something better than the last? Timbaland and  Drake released “Say Something” and of course everyone will hop on it. Hip Hop please say something!!! Drizzy you took an artist challenge and turned it into love rap. ARE YOU SERIOUS?!  I need you to “say something”, baby.

This is a new leak I found listen to this as well. I still don’t know what to think of it. I’m not a fan. If he’s still hot by 2010, radio will play it to death.
