In 2000 CBS launched the reality TV show Survivor. It was a simple premise 8 contestants lived on a desert island and each week one was voted off. The last one standing won a million dollars. Richard Hatch was the winner and he has since spent time in prison for tax evasion. Since that time we have seen literally hundreds of reality shows. There was a show on Fox that asked the question “Who wants to Marry a Millionaire?”   Women vied for the affection of a complete stranger because he had a million dollars. We learned later that he did not have the money. We have seen a woman give birth to 8 children at one time when she already had six. Why would a single mom do this? She wanted a reality show. We saw a cute family show morph into a family tragedy, and that was Jon & Kate Plus 8. In the early years we saw a seemingly loving couple try to raise their kids with the help of supportive family and friends. We saw both Jon and Kate buy into their own hype and ultimately become shadows of their former selves. When TLC (the Learning Channel) saw the marriage start to unravel they decided to change the direction of reality. They wanted to launch Kate and 8 and just drop Jon from the show. This seemed to be a working solution for them, but Jon did the first paternal thing he has done in months. He said enough and decided his children would no longer participate in this perverted reality. We have seen Susan Boyle the brilliant singer plucked from obscurity meltdown under the constant pressure of the spotlight. Her story started out as a Cinderella story. Here was this plain Jane with an incredible set of pipes. We heard people make fun of her looks and marvel as if only beautiful people could sing. We witnessed her external makeover, but we have seen her recently reduced to sucking her thumb for comfort in public. She is a woman on the edge, but because she is hot she will continue to be pushed as long as it is profitable. We are left to ask why are these average people willing to do almost anything for their 15 minutes? In most cases it is not the money, but it is the fame. When you watch these shows you see they tend to select people with extreme personalities. The more extreme you are the more camera time you will get. On the first season of the Real Housewives of Atlanta one of the wives was DuShawn Snow wife of former NBA player Eric Snow. She was dropped from the show because she was too normal and normal does not bring in the big ratings.  On the flip side Nene Leakes is loud, brash and obnoxious and she is recognized as the show’s star. Bravo knows how to sniff out a star, and that’s why it is hard to believe that Bravo is feigning ignorance in the White House Party Crashing Fiasco. Bravo assigned a camera crew to cover the Salahis the day of the State Dinner. Bravo said they were told by the couple that they had been invited and they acted on good faith. This is an inadequate excuse. Most parents do more vetting than this when their child visits a new friend. At any time did the officials at Bravo ask to see the invitation?  Right now the spotlight is on the inadequacies of the Secret Service and the actions of the couple, but Bravo does not have clean hands in this and they need to also be called on the carpet. The reality is reality television is cheap to produce and networks make a lot of money off the misery of people. We are seeing people cheapen themselves for a few minutes in the spotlight. We saw the Heenes lie to police and say their son was missing. What was the motive? To get a reality show. Law enforcement devoted manpower and resources to search for a missing child who was actually at home. The Salahis are the latest to attempt to jump on this speeding train to fame, but finally it hit a glitch that might actually derail the fame train, but fear not maybe they can star as the Real Inmates of DC.

The black community is weaker now than it has ever been. Many of us have done well as individuals. But if you objectively analyze our community as a whole – the true shape of the American black should make you weep. Lack of corporate ownership and sparse local political leadership are at the root of decreasing progress. We pray for jobs from other people because our community does not invent, manufacture or build anything. Instead of becoming students of capitalism and innovation – we mock white millionaires instead of providing market competition. They give us meager jobs just so we can support their business models as consumers. They put us on their TV stations and we dance and bounce balls for their entertainment – providing an illusion so our kids will follow. We put whites down in rap songs and call them racist, but we deposit our checks in their banks. The deceived will not understand why other Americans don’t respect us – we do little for this country. We don’t employ anyone; we don’t fight for anyone but ourselves. We seek fair treatment and reduced prison terms while Indians and Chinese Americans earn degrees and invest. We protest laws from the sofa with few people willing or able to run for political office. The Chinese and the Indian silently know the truth – everyone knows except us. That the black community does not pose any threats to their great American future – they wait for the day when they own the corporations you work for now. Fathers that leave their kids to the street and abandon their parental responsibilities are no different than murderers. If you wait for the government to deliver happiness – then your wait goes back to the 1700s. Those Black Americans that can do something need organization and direction. Here is the basic formula:
1) Wealthy Black Americans organize and form private business loan institutions
2) Qualified Black Americans would borrow from those resources to create businesses
3) The general Black community would diverse in academics and provide an educated workforce
4) Marriage and education would be the new standard for the black community
5) Every qualified black professional should run for offices across all parties and learn how to help all Americans and not speak just to blacks. Would you listen to the American Chinese Mayor that only speaks to Chinese – wake up and see what the future really has in store for us.

If we don’t step up now – I say we deserve what we get.

As if radical injustice is not enough – I’m now at my last straw, because I’m sick of media stories leading the black community around like obedient lap dogs. Media conglomerates realized long ago, that racially charged stories were pure gold. These stories generate viewership, which equal profits. All that’s needed is a racial event and anoint a black hero and start a fight. So many people use race conflicts to generate money – comedians, politicians, salespeople and entertainers. Police and media will exploit a simple local story of a black shoplifter and boldly proceed to use the story for leverage at city meetings, boldly stating how crime is taking the streets (pointing to any minority arrest) and request unplanned tax dollars and hire 12 additional cops. Money that would be used to improve schools instead funds needless guerilla police troops. The media company then plasters the black community “leader” on national news and the fiscal quarter moves from red to black with increased advertisers. Everyone watches, because at any moment, something big might be going down – white communities watching the coverage go out and buy every gun within reach. Now profits are up for other industries – it doesn’t end there, everyone is out to gain something from exploiting race tension. It doesn’t matter – race sells. I see white fear, and it supports a billion dollar gun industry buying artillery and guns by the truckload. Black fear is no better, somehow the community feels better, if a cop is fired or some executive loses a job – I suppose it’s calming – because it feels like there is some justice out there. But these few people going down in the race crimes are just black and white causalities, subject to the exploitation game. In reality, the only thing that matters is keeping the black community in a useful position. “The only justice is profit and profit by any means”. How is it progress when the race formula is repeated continually? Think back, this is the same old game, once the cameras are off, the big race story disappears. We act as lap dogs, responding to the master’s call, moving exactly and squarely to the spot designated. Give it a few hours, we return to poverty and self depreciation. There is self deception in the white and black community; I suppose that is one thing these communities do have in common. Fear is exploited on all sides and the poison is used to raise power and money. It’s true, I am at my last straw, but I fear this is the way it will be, so I better get some more straws.

The words “black community” is an idea but not a reality. The narrow definition of a community is a group of people centralized with intent, belief, resources, preferences, needs, risks, and other conditions affecting the identity of the participants and their degree of cohesiveness. A small native tribe is a community, the black community is often reviewed as a tribe and I believe that analysis is the issue. The tribe mentality enforces “how a black person should act and do”. If you don’t fit in the model – you are in essence “anti-black”. The circus begins when black groups divide and define ideas, which maybe based on religious, political or even cultural differences.

It’s easy to invoke “tribe mentality” squarely in the center of every aspect of black community; ultimately, that same mentality will frustrate the thinking person. The thinking person will excel individually and abandon the black community, but in reality, he is abandoning the tribe mentality.
In time, the thinking person may self reflect on life and a genuine concern for his people may energize the soul. Perhaps he or she begins to write a book or becomes active in an organization.
He or she will submit perfect solutions for the so called black community. The translation of their solution, will only register with specific targets that speak the same language, essentially falling flat. The black community is diverse, vibrant and wealthy at top percentages, and also impoverish, self-deprecating and idle at lowest percentages. The range of achievement in the black community is no different from any other group in America. The problem for the black community is the tribe mentality, which limits ideology and possibilities. The tribe mentality is what keeps the poor from progressing and what also keeps the wealthy from investing. Both groups afraid of the other and I submit that this circular poison is what crushes the black community from growing outward.
Crush the tribe mentality and free the individual. Freed individuals will dream and implement innovation, which will expand horizons of Black American achievement. We read black history, but don’t comprehend that those named and unnamed black pioneers were visionary juggernauts, who were enslaved at the ankles, but never of the mind, rejecting mental shackles of the world, including the mental shackles of the black community. Today’s black Americans, who enforce rules of the tribe, are more destructive than they know. Don’t mock something different on the basis that is not from the tribe– the black community is not a tribe – the black community is individuals of many shades and ideas, independently weaving into a massive global infrastructure. One by one leaving impoverished communities and losing nothing, but gaining everything. The American black community is not destined to be fenced in 20 blocks around downtown, but destined to become inspiration for impoverished blacks all over the globe. Leave the tribe mentality behind and become aquatinted with the future.

I am certainly not in position to expound Holy Scriptures. I have skeletons in my closet I would rather not talk about; however, this one Christian scripture 1 Corinthians 13:11 has stuck with me since I first heard it. “When I was a child, I talked like a child; I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me”.
I am older now, like many of you; I have done well in America. I am tucked away in a beautiful neigh hood with new schools and Saturday soccer games. My home is nothing like where I came from. I was born in the deep south outfitted with confederate racism and “all around” hopelessness. One muggy summer afternoon, I found myself presented with an opportunity. Of all the stupid mistakes I had made in my early 20s, I took advantage of one lucky break and moved away for an education.
Much like 1 Corinthians 13:11, I am not a child anymore and now a man. I think about my struggling family back home and my brothers and sisters all across America. I, for one, do not want to die without trying to give back to my community. I think that’s one reason many of us are blogging the best way we know how. Many of us speak from the heart and are honest activist for this great cause or another.
Without money, it is darn near impossible to do anything; including doing anything big that could help build a healthier black community. So, I find myself somewhat depressed about my lack of ability, listening to Coltrane or Miles, madly typing something or nothing on my laptop. Soon, my wife will burst into my office, yelling how the kids are not doing this or that. I will go upstairs and be a father and spend time with my wife discussing the sweet nonsense of our days. I will forget all about the issues of the black community, until tomorrow, when I read the news.
If I had funds to push my agenda for a healthier black community, I would build an organization and push these ten solutions with all my might:
1) Build world class professional trade schools in impoverished communities
2) Accelerate minority corporate ownership by providing private equity loans
3) Assist in monetary funding for qualified minorities to run for local and national public service
4) Be responsible for instilling noble values in minority youth and call out media entities that do otherwise
5) Create local and national programs that reward minority youth for keeping clean records
6) Start a national campaign to repair and heal the perceived relationship with police and judges.
7) Purchase real estate that can be used for farming, livestock and manufacturing facilities
Partner with attorneys nationwide and help pay fees for grossly unjust trial cases against minorities
9) Publish books, films, TV, music and other media products that disassemble negative black stereotypes
10) Provide fully paid tuition scholarships to the brightest minorities that seek advanced technical degrees

I put together 10 solutions that I believe will improve the health from head to toe in the black community. I believe these 10 solutions will enrich a great percentage of people and create generational wealth. I want to be able to look back and say “this is how it was and this is what I did to change it”. Now, all I need is an organization, a few bagillion dollars and 40 million willing and non-opposing people. Well, you know the worst thing about a dreamer ……………..is waking up. Hmmmp, maybe thinking like a child wasn’t so bad after all.

A powerful homemade bomb sent a high-speed Moscow-to-St. Petersburg train careening off its tracks killing at least 26 people in what officials consider an act of terrorism. As many as 100 people were left injured by the disaster, officials said, and 18 remained missing. The crash occurred near the border of the Novgorod and Tver provinces, some 250 miles (400 kilometers) northwest of Moscow and 150 miles (250 kilometers) southeast of St. Petersburg. Among the dead were citizens of Belgium, Italy and Azerbaijan, Governor Valentina Matvienko of St. Petersburg told the state-run RIA Novosti news agency. Experts found pieces of an explosive device that and left a five-foot (1.5 meter). The initial blast derailed the last three carriages of the 14-car Nevsky Express. The investigative committee of Russia’s General Prosecutor’s Office said, “Indeed, this was a terrorist attack.”

That’s what TMZ.com is saying, that this whole thing is strictly domestic. Husband and wife argued about a third wheel–rumored to be Rachel Uchitel. Those lacerations on his face and head? All from Mrs. Woods–and her little golf club. Well, someone else in the family knows how to swing one…as The First Church of Tiger Woods as well as TMZ.com can also testify.

Tiger Woods did not suffer facial lacerations from a car accident. They were inflicted by his wife, Elin Nordegren — according to a conversation Woods had Friday after the accident.

Tiger has yet to be formally interviewed by the Florida Highway Patrol — that should happen this afternoon. But we’re told Tiger had a conversation Friday — with a non-law enforcement type — detailing what went down before his Escalade hit a fire hydrant.

We’re told he said his wife had confronted him about reports that he was seeing another woman. The argument got heated and, according to our source, she scratched his face up. We’re told it was then Woods beat a hasty retreat for his SUV — but according to our source, Woods says his wife followed behind with a golf club. As Tiger drove away, she struck the vehicle several times with the club.

We’re told Woods became “distracted,” thought the vehicle was stopped, and looked to see what had happened. At that point the SUV hit the fire hydrant and then hit a tree.

We’re also told Woods had said during the conversation Friday he had been taking prescription pain medication for an injury, which could explain why he seemed somewhat out of it at the time.

Well, how have the mighty fallen. Here I was thinking that him focusing on his wife’s pregnancies was slowing up his game. It’s not that; it’s bouncing several blonde babes who nearly resemble each other at the same time that’s been screwing up his “A game.”

This is something even his cheating Creole daddy wouldn’t have been able to fix while alive.

What an idiot. Is that all it comes down to? Nooky on demand? He’s got everything, so what does he want now? The ruin of his career? Joining these other sad souls on the covers of People and National Enquirer full of money and power and unhappiness? It’ll fall away, Tiger. Everything will fall away if you don’t recognize this opportunity for what it is. Stop. Fcking. Around. Divorce Elin, remarry someone else or stay single. Or try something else to do other than golf.

Other white golfers have tended to keep their creeping under wraps or on page 14 of the sports page, couched in cryptic language. Or they’ve stuck with the same woman through creeping, children, moving around, and financial reverses. But not you, Tiger. There were already strong rumors before this happened that you were creeping. See, you’re a rock star. When people heard about the accident, it was like a thunderclap heard around the world. Nobody, except perhaps Obama, will get this kind of attention and concern. Even if you are losing on the course, you still have that rock star mantle. It’s a blessing, but now, it’s a curse. People won’t come to see you or buy your endorsed products if you keep on this way. Lorne Rubenstein of Canada’s The Globe and Mail says we’re all waiting for some answers.

Woods has the support of many sponsors, who pay him untold millions. They want to be associated with the 33-year-old winner of 14 major championships not only because he is a brilliant golfer – perhaps the best in history – but because of his image. They along with golf fans will want to know exactly what happened early yesterday morning in the darkness of the exclusive Isleworth community when Woods pulled away from his mansion.

The sponsors that will want to know – or one would think they would, and need to – include, among others, Nike, Upper Deck, Accenture, TAG Heuer, EA Sports, Golf Digest, Netjet, Gatorade, and Gillette. Meanwhile, Kim Montes, a spokesman for the Florida Highway Patrol told The Associated Press that police plan to ask Woods “everything.” First reports said nothing about that having happened, the explanation being that Woods was being treated for his injuries.

One thing is certain: PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem and the sponsors of every tournament in which Woods plays, must have nearly collapsed with worry when the accident was reported. He moves the dial like no other golfer, ever.

Woods was one of only two golfers ranked in the top 50 in the world who played in that recent Australian Masters, and some 25,000 spectators followed him every round. The Hong Kong Open on the same week had 12 players ranked in the top 50. Telecasts of the tournament showed very few people at the tournament.

My advice: Man up. Admit that you are having marital problems, then go into counseling with your wife. Decide whether to keep her and the children, or let her go with enough money to live the rest of her life in peace, and share custody. It doesn’t work to have a family and to continue being a playa when you’re on tour. In between, be with your little boy and little girl. That’s your living legacy. Find or reject religion or find comfort in family or friends who’ll tell you the truth, not what you want to hear. Get back to the basic reason why you love golf and what it does for you, and then spread that love around to your wife, children and other family members. Open up your life, Tiger. And above all, step on, but on a different path. Let this episode fade away for your sake. Don’t turn this into a donnybrook that every major gossip media outlet will rush to talk about to your detriment, and have folks shaking their heads. It’s up to you.

The Obama Administration announced it does not intend to sign an international treaty banning land mines saying, “we determined that we wouldn’t be able to meet our national defense needs, nor our security commitments to our friends and allies if we signed this convention.” The Mine Ban Treaty, which went into effect in 1999, bans the use, stockpiling, production or transfer of antipersonnel mines. It has been endorsed by 156 countries, but not by major military powers like the U.S., China, India, Pakistan and Russia. The 1997 Ottawa Treaty, also known as the Land Mine Treaty, was signed by 133 countries around the world. Much of Africa, South and Central America, and Europe are among the signatories. The treaty is more limited than its name implies, as it only prohibits anti-personnel mines.

Article 4  Destruction of stockpiled anti-personnel mines

Except as provided for in Article 3, each State Party undertakes to destroy or ensure the destruction of all stockpiled anti-personnel mines it owns or possesses, or that are under its jurisdiction or control, as soon as possible but not later than four ye ars after the entry into force of this Convention for that State Party.

Article 5 Destruction of anti-personnel mines in mined areas

1. Each State Party undertakes to destroy or ensure the destruction of all anti-personnel mines in mined areas under its jurisdiction or control, as soon as possible but not later than ten years after the entry into force of this Convention for that State Party.

2. Each State Party shall make every effort to identify all areas under its jurisdiction or control in which anti-personnel mines are known or suspected to be emplaced and shall ensure as soon as possible that all anti-personnel mines in mined areas under its jurisdiction or control are perimeter-marked, monitored and protected by fencing or other means, to ensure the effective exclusion of civilians, until all anti-personnel mines contained therein have been destroyed. The marking shall at least be to the standards set out in the Protocol on Prohibitions or Restrictions on the Use of Mines, Booby-Traps and Other Devices, as amended on 3 May 1996, annexed to the Convention on Prohibitions or Restrictions on the Use of Certain Conventional Weapons Which May Be Deemed to Be Excessively Injurious or to Have Indiscriminate Effects.

3. If a State Party believes that it will be unable to destroy or ensure the destruction of all anti-personnel mines referred to in paragraph 1 within that time period, it may submit a request to a Meeting of the States Parties or a Review Conference for an extension of the deadline for completing the destruction of such anti-personnel mines, for a period of up to ten years.

4. Each request shall contain:
a) The duration of the proposed extension;
b) A detailed explanation of the reasons for the proposed extension, including:
(i) The preparation and status of work conducted under national demining programs;
(ii) The financial and technical means available to the State Party for the destruction of all the anti-personnel mines; and
(iii) Circumstances which impede the ability of the State Party to destroy all the anti-personnel mines in mined areas;
c) The humanitarian, social, economic, and environmental implications of the extension; and
d) Any other information relevant to the request for the proposed extension.

5. The Meeting of the States Parties or the Review Conference shall, taking into consideration the factors contained in paragraph 4, assess the request and decide by a majority of votes of States Parties present and voting whether to grant the request for an extension period.

6. Such an extension may be renewed upon the submission of a new request in accordance with paragraphs 3, 4 and 5 of this Article. In requesting a further extension period a State Party shall submit relevant additional information on what has been undertaken in the previous extension period pursuant to this Article.

Those that can remember, Princess Diana focused her attention on the worldwide menace of land mines.

Last year, landmines and other similar devices killed or injured more than 5,000 people, over 60% of whom were civilians and 28% children. Anti-tank mines, remote control mines, and “anti-handling devices” (booby traps) are not covered by the treaty. The international campaign to ban land mines is in response to their enormous toll on civilian populations, particularly after a conflict is over. While the US has not used landmines since 1991, it has stockpiles of some 10m antipersonnel mines and 7.5m anti-vehicular mines, and has used cluster bombs, which leave behind explosive “duds” that act as de facto mines, in Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq.

Today the Secret Service says they are embarrassed by the security breech. To think that someone off the street could get this close to the leader of the free world is just frightening. Why were these people passed through? Could it be a case of racial profiling? Would a black couple have been able to move so easily through the gates? I don’t think so we are constantly challenged to prove who we are. It was bad enough to see their pictures with the vice-president, but today we now know they were up close and personal with the president. Some are laughing this off as some kind of humorous prank, but this is serious. These people wanted their 15 minutes and they got it, but hopefully there will be some serious consequences from this incident.

For the record, the usual child’s funeral costs about $4,500. It’s not chicken feed.

Basketball star Shaquille O’Neal paid for the funeral of a 5-year-old North Carolina girl after being moved by national news coverage of the case of Shaniya Davis, who police say was kidnapped and killed.

The Cleveland Cavaliers player was touched by the stories he saw and got in touch with the family to see what he could do to help, a spokeswoman for O’Neal said Thursday.

More than 2,000 people attended the girl’s funeral Sunday. Her body was found Nov. 16 beside a rural road.

Her mother, Antoinette Davis, who had reported the child missing six days earlier, is charged with human trafficking and child abuse involving prostitution. Mario McNeill is charged with murder, rape and kidnapping in the case.

“I was sitting at home watching it on the news and the story brought a tear to my eye,” O’Neal told The Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper.

Better make sure that Bradley Lockhart’s mitts aren’t on the money raised for the little girl’s funeral expenses. It was announced that the money already raised would be given to charities and organizations concerned with child abuse. It had better be; any money sent to a bank in the name of a missing or murdered child is still the property of the people who set up the account–either Bradley Lockhart or his sister Carey Lockhart-Davis. These people’s actions should be watched. I wouldn’t be surprised if more than $4,500 was raised; and that’s enough for any one to suddenly get greedy.

The holiday had nothing to do with it, although the timing was exquisite. The gesture by Shaquille O’Neal happened to be announced on Thanksgiving, and that gave greater meaning to a unique act of kindness.

We are too familiar with the manner some athletes have gained headlines away from their games. So many have been arrested, whether for serious offenses, Plaxico Burress pleading guilty to criminal possession of a weapon, or lesser ones.

If Shaq is guilty of anything, however, it’s sensitivity. Others may have shamed sports, made us ask “What’s the matter with these guys? Don’t they have a brain in their head?”

O’Neal provided a large percentage of pride. He did what’s right. Without being asked or coaxed.

Shaq is far from perfect. He is being sued for divorce. But he always has been a caring individual, raised in a military family by a stepfather who demanded discipline and respect.

Shaq may play a mean game of basketball, although now at age 37, he is too often injured, including currently, having not been in uniform for the Cleveland Cavaliers since mid-November because of a shoulder ailment.

In the game of life, as so many big men, O’Neal rarely is mean.

Perhaps he does not fit the mythical category of Gentle Giant. So we label him the Considerate Competitor. Or employ the description he often has used on himself, the Big Socrates.

Touched by the tragedy of 5-year-old Shaniya Davis, who police say was kidnapped and killed, and whose body was found a week and a half ago beside a rural road in North Carolina, O’Neal paid for the child’s funeral.

“I was sitting at home watching it on the news,” O’Neal told the Cleveland Plain Dealer, “and the story brought a tear to my eye.”

He saw what we all saw, hate, pain, tragedy, tales told repeatedly in modern society. A girl he didn’t know. A story we all know. Shaquille O’Neal was not content merely to step away.

He never has been.

Ten North Naples Middle School students were suspended after they participated in “kick a Jew day.” The students received a one day, in-school suspension. The parents of the 10 students were also called. Parents of the students who were kicked were also notified of what happened. The Collier County School District has a policy on bullying and harassment. The students were disciplined in accordance with the bullying and harassment policy, which can range from “positive behavioral interventions up to and including suspension or expulsion, as outlined in the Code of Student Conduct.” What do you think should happen to these students?

Not only are you women who decide to go Lesbian/Bi-sexual because some man broke your heart impostors but you’re stupid as well. Its not those that get the sex changes its the ones that fancy themselves with someone who has gotten a sex change. My point is, why leave a real dick for a fake one? It goes in the same hole(s). Wang Zifei, a student at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, attended Obama’s town hall at the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum. Zifei sat in a spot that resulted in her appearing in a number of photos from the event. She has become an Internet sensation, with people referring her to as the ‘beauty in black beside Obama.’

This “Obama girl in black” or the “woman in black behind Obama” also captured attention by wearing a bright red coat to the event, and she became the subject of a popular animation which shows the coat being taken off, which you can watch here.

 Today I went to the beauty shop and heard one of the stylist say she was leaving her home at 11:30PM tomorrow night to be in Pennsylvania by 3AM to be in line for a sale that would start at 4AM. When did we lose our collective minds? When my kids were younger I would get up at 5 and go to Toys Are Us, but I learned it really was not worth it. Some of the so-called doorbusters are gone by the time you enter the door, but that is not the biggest problem. Too many people are still putting too much on plastic. One of the stylist said that she was behind on her car note but she was not going to miss the Black Friday specials. Black Friday is something dreamed up by the merchants with the goal of getting everyone hyped up to buy. This year let’s exercise a little self control. Instead of letting your child give you a list as long as your arm, ask them to write down 2 things that they really want. Smaller kids are easier to please, but as they get older their wants get more expensive, and notice I use the word want. Most Christmas presents are not needs they are wants, and wants can be managed. So let’s curb expectations this year. Let’s use the sense God gave u,s and our mothers cultivated, and let’s finally put the brakes on some of this foolishness.

This Thanksgiving is different for me. In July I lost my job and have not found a new one yet, but in spite of that I am still very thankful. I am thankful that I have a supportive family and loving friends who have been a constant source of emotional support. I am thankful that my family is healthy and the dreaded swine flu has not stopped by my home. I am thankful that our  extended family will be arriving tonight for the holiday. I am thankful that I have had the opportunity to share my thoughts with you for almost two years. I am thankful that I live in a country that allows me to share my uncensored and unfiltered opinions everyday.  I am also thankful that you take the time to read my blog. I would say God Bless America, but He already has. So I will ask for His continued blessings on all of you, and I will just say Enjoy your Turkey Day and try not to eat too much!

U.S. Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner and White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Director Peter R. Orszag today released details of the final Fiscal Year 2009 budget results.  Budget Results for Fiscal Year 2009 A summary of the FY2009 data, released as part of the September 2009 Monthly Treasury Statement of Receipts and Outlays of the United States Government, shows that the federal deficit dropped by $162 billion from a projected $1,580 billion in the August Mid-Session Review (MSR) to the final figure of $1,417 billion.

Fiscal Year 2009 Receipts

Total receipts for FY2009 were $2,105 billion, $31 billion higher than the MSR estimate of $2,074 billion.  Higher-than-expected collections of individual income taxes and corporation income taxes accounted for most of the net increase in receipts relative to the MSR.  Table 2 displays actual receipts and estimates from the Budget and MSR by source.

Individual income taxes were $915 billion, $12 billion higher than the MSR estimate.  Higher-than-estimated non-withheld payments accounted for $5 billion of the increase in individual income taxes relative to the MSR.

Corporation income taxes were $138 billion, $17 billion higher than the MSR estimate. Inaction on the Administration’s proposal to expand net operating loss carrybacks increased corporation income tax payments $28 billion relative to the MSR.

Social insurance and retirement receipts were $891 billion, the same as the MSR estimate, although there were offsetting differences among the sources of this category of receipts. A $2 billion increase in employment and general retirement receipts relative to the MSR was attributable to the lower-than-expected reallocation of withheld tax payments from the Social Security and Medicare Trust Funds to individual income taxes, as described above.

Excise taxes were $62 billion, $3 billion lower than the MSR estimate. This decline was attributable to lower-than-expected demand for taxed goods.

Estate and gift taxes were $23 billion, $3 billion lower than the MSR estimate. This decline was in large part attributable to a decline in the value of taxable estates relative to the MSR estimate.

Customs duties were $22 billion, within $100 million of the MSR estimate.

Miscellaneous receipts were $52 billion, $8 billion higher than the MSR estimate. Higher-than-expected deposits of earnings by the Federal Reserve System, attributable to higher-than-expected returns on its investment portfolio and its foreign currency holdings, accounted for $7 billion of the increase in miscellaneous receipts relative to the MSR estimate.

Total Recovery Act outlays in FY2009 were $113 billion, with the largest components in the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to cover increased Medicaid payments, the Department of Labor to provide higher unemployment benefits, and the Department of Education for payments to states from the State Fiscal Stabilization Fund and for increases in Pell grants.

Department of Agriculture — Outlays for the Department of Agriculture were $114 billion, $6.4 billion below the MSR estimate. Commodity Credit Corporation (CCC) actual outlays were about $2 billion less than MSR estimates. This occurred because fewer producers than anticipated took out commodity loans and more paid them back before the end of the fiscal year; dairy prices increased late in the fiscal year.

Department of Commerce — Department of Commerce outlays were $11 billion in FY2009, $1.1 billion below the MSR estimate. Over half of this difference ($558 million) related to the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, which administers the digital-to-analog converter box coupon program and public safety interoperable communications grants; both programs spent less in FY2009 than anticipated.

Department of Defense — Outlays for the Department of Defense (DOD) were $637 billion, $4.4 billion, or 0.7 percent, less than estimated in the MSR. There is no single explanation for the differences between projected and actual outlays, but several examples illustrate the types of variance seen in accounts. For example, DOD spent $1.5 billion less than projected for the Air Force to purchase.

Department of Education — Outlays for the Department of Education were $53 billion, $3.9 billion higher than the MSR estimate. Spending for the new State Fiscal Stabilization Fund, created by the Recovery Act, was $7.1 billion higher than expected, due to accelerated State drawdowns of this funding.

Department of Energy — Outlays for the Department of Energy were $24 billion, $3.5 billion lower than the MSR estimate. Outlays for the Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy account were $1.34 billion below MSR estimates due to slower-than-expected disbursement of Recovery Act funds, particularly for the Weatherization Assistance Program.

Department of Health and Human Services — Outlays for the Department of Health and Human Services were $796 billion, $17.6 billion below the MSR estimate.  A little less than half of the total difference was in outlays for Medicaid, which were $7.6 billion (2.9 percent) lower than MSR estimates, due to slower-than-expected growth in State Medicaid spending.

Department of Homeland Security — Outlays for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) were $52 billion in FY2009, $1.8 billion more than the MSR estimate. The difference was attributable primarily to a decrease in fee collections and higher-than-expected outlays from a number of agencies within the Department. DHS fees were below the MSR estimate by approximately $700 million.

Department of Housing and Urban Development — The Department of Housing and Urban Development’s total FY2009 outlays were $61 billion, $1.8 billion below the MSR estimate. Most of this difference ($0.9 billion) was due to receipts generated by Federal Housing Administration (FHA) single-family and Government National Mortgage Association (GNMA) loan guarantee programs with negative subsidy rates. The loan volume of these programs surged as private mortgage insurance largely vacated the housing finance market.

Department of Justice — FY2009 outlays for the Department of Justice (DOJ) were $28 billion, $1.4 billion below the MSR estimate. DOJ’s actual outlays for State and local law enforcement assistance in the Office of Justice Programs were $1.0 billion lower due to slower-than-expected outlays of the Recovery Act grantee funds. The Recovery Act funds have been fully obligated to state and local law enforcement programs, but the grantees are not spending the funds as quickly as had been projected.

Department of Transportation — Outlays for the Department of Transportation were $73 billion, $7.5 billion lower than projected in the MSR. Actual outlays for DOT Recovery Act programs were $4.5 billion less than estimated, with the difference primarily in highway, transit, and rail programs. This was largely because of the time and steps required by project sponsors to start work on a new set of previously unplanned projects.

Department of the Treasury — Outlays for the Department of Treasury totaled $703 billion, $98.4 billion lower than the MSR estimate. Major differences from the MSR estimate include the following:

TARP had net outlays of $153.9 billion for debt, equity, guarantee, and housing programs, $82.3 billion lower than the MSR estimate, most of which was due to the timing of disbursements that were expected to occur in FY2009 but are now assumed to shift to FY2010.

Under the Government Sponsored Enterprise (GSE) Preferred Stock Purchase Agreements program, the Department of the Treasury’s capital payments to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac totaled $95.6 billion in FY2009, $10.3 billion less than estimated in the MSR, due to better-than-expected financial results at the GSEs.

Net outlays for two Treasury accounts related to exchange stabilization were $2.6 billion below the MSR estimate – the Exchange Stabilization Fund, which Treasury uses at times to maintain a stable international financial system, and its child account, the Exchange Stabilization Fund Money Market Mutual Fund Guaranty Facility.

Outlays for refundable tax credits and related programs that are part of the Internal Revenue Code and administered by Treasury and the Internal Revenue Service, such as the child tax credit, were $6.6 billion lower than estimated in the MSR. The largest difference was for a new Recovery Act program of cash assistance to States in lieu of low-income housing credits, which outlayed $3.1 billion less than estimated in the MSR. While these funds were obligated in FY2009, they are now expected to be drawn down and outlayed in FYs 2010 and 2011.

Interest on the public debt, which includes interest paid to government accounts as well as interest paid to the public, was $383.4 billion, $11.1 billion lower than the MSR estimate. Interest paid to government accounts was $14.0 billion lower than projected, due primarily to lower interest rates, including $4.9 billion in lower interest paid to trust funds and $8.0 billion in lower interest paid to the DOD Medicare-Eligible Retiree Health Care Fund.

An additional $14.4 billion of the difference in Treasury outlays was due to intragovernmental interest transactions with credit financing accounts, including $30.1 billion lower-than-projected interest paid to credit financing accounts and $44.6 billion lower-than-anticipated offsetting receipts of interest from credit financing accounts.

Corps of Engineers — Outlays for the Army Corps of Engineers civil works program were $7 billion, $5.8 billion lower than the MSR estimate. Much of the difference was due to changes in construction project schedules made after the MSR and increases in offsetting collections for work that the Corps performed on behalf of other Federal agencies under its reimbursable program.

General Services Administration — GSA’s total outlays were $0.3 billion, $1.1 billion less than what was projected in the MSR. $890 million was associated with the Federal Buildings Fund (FBF) and the Acquisition Services Fund. For the Acquisition Services Fund, actual revenue was $251 million higher than anticipated. For the FBF, actual revenue was more than $200 million higher than anticipated.

Office of Personnel Management — Outlays for the Office of Personnel Management were $72 billion, $4.1 billion higher than the MSR estimate. OPM outlays were higher due to legislative relief provided to the US Postal Service in the 2010 Continuing Resolution, which allowed that agency to make only $1.4 billion of the expected $5.4 billion end-of-year payment for USPS retiree health.

Other Defense Civil Programs — Outlays for Other Defense Civil programs were $57 billion, $8.8 billion more than the MSR estimate. Most of this difference was due to lower-than-projected earnings on investments of the Medicare-Eligible Retiree Health Care Fund (MERHCF), which are offset against gross outlays to calculate net outlays. These lower-than-projected earnings were largely due to a less-than-expected return on the Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) investments in the MERHCF portfolio.

Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation — The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) had net actual outlays of $6.7 billion, $5.3 billion above the MSR estimate. The difference was almost entirely due to greater-than-expected payments related to the resolution of failed banks.

National Credit Union Administration — Outlays for the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) were $16 billion, $1.5 billion lower than the MSR estimate, predominantly due to one unanticipated transaction. The Credit Liquidity Facility transferred $1.75 billion from the U.S. Central Federal Credit Union to the U.S. Treasury, resulting in an unexpected net in-flow of cash in August 2009.

United States Postal Service — The United States Postal Service (USPS) had net actual outlays of $0.4 billion, $3.5 billion lower than the MSR estimate. This difference was almost entirely due to the recent legislated change in the statutorily mandated USPS payment to the Office of Personnel Management for retiree health benefits liabilities.

Undistributed Offsetting Receipts — Undistributed offsetting receipts were $274 billion in FY2009, $3.7 billion lower than the MSR estimate.  Interest received by trust funds was $181.6 billion, $4.9 billion lower than the MSR estimate, due primarily to lower-than-estimated interest earnings for the Civil Service Retirement and Disability Fund.

There’s a new celebrity couple in the midst. Colin Ferrell and Janet Jackson have apparently been seen romantical together. Move over, Brangelina!

On Friday, news broke that a hacker had broken in to the computer systems used by the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) of the University of East Anglia in Britain, obtaining more than 1,000 e-mails and 3,000 documents. The material, which covers a period of more than a decade, has led many to conclude that climate scientists associated with the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and various government agencies have been cooking the books to make the case for man-made global warming. Among the most damaging is one which appears to suggest using a ‘trick’ to massage years of temperature data to ‘hide the decline’. The email suggesting ‘hiding the decline’ is purported to be from Phil Jones, the unit’s director.

- From Phil Jones, head of the Climatic Research Unit at East Anglia University, to Ray Bradley, Michael Mann, and Malcolm Hughes, three U.S. scientists who have produced the controversial “hockey-stick graphs” that purport to show rapidly increasing temperatures in recent decades. Nov, 16, 1999.

“I’ve just completed Mike’s Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years (i. e. from 1981 onwards) and from 1961 for Keith’s to hide the decline.”
