#Cortielhaday – O melhor hoje, sexta-feira 13, é ir pr’A Obra. É aniversário da DJ Mi Simpatia, nossa querida Camila Cortielha. Com seus convidados, a fofa vai tocar rock, indie e pop animando a pista como se não houvesse amanhã – aliás, esse é o nome da festa. Isso tudo sem contar que essa é a melhor pedida pra quem quer fugir do zuem-zuem dos DJs gringos borings que vão dar as caras na Velvet e no Deputa (porque a gente é roquenrol, mermão). Pra entrar é R$ 15 e começa às 22h – mas lembrem que estamos falando d’A Obra.

Dia Mundial Vegano - O pessoal do Gato Negro mais uma vez organizou um evento com palestras, oficinas e feira. O legal é você levar os amigos que não são vegetarianos ou veganos para eles refletirem sobre direitos dos animais e poderem ver que nem tudo no mundo vegano é aquele tofu branquelo sem graça. O evento rola na Faculdade Arnaldo (Timbiras, 560). Tudo começa às 8:30h e deve seguir até 17h. Entrada franca.

Night That Rocks! – Essa semana rola uma edição especial da festa de rock do Velvet Club (Sergipe, 1493). Além de Trista e Nudja tocaram brit-rock, a casa vai lançar um novo drink, chamado Black Velvet, uma mistura de Guiness com espumante. Moças pagam no máximo R$ 15 e moços no máximo R$ 20.

Feng Shui-ing the House

Got up this morning with the bright idea that I would feng shui the front entry, which falls in the Career bagua of our house. Now that Hubby has graduated from college with a Bachelor’s degree in sociology (minor in religion), he’s hunting for jobs. Bringing new energy into that sector of our house, and thence into our lives, is a priority, particularly with the economy the way it is.

What started as the intent to activate the chi in one specific area became an exercise in feng shui-ing several other baguas in the house (health, prosperity, & family), as well as tidying spots outside. As I moved one thing, I’d have to move others. Let me tell you, it’s incredibly exhausting to rearrange chi, even though it can’t be seen. Our cats freak out every time I do it. (Oh, yeah. The cats feel it.)

Because feng shui seems to be a mix of intent along with basic common-sense measures (keeping the lid shut prevents you from dropping stuff down the toilet), it’s not as hokey as it might appear. For example, placing books within the Career bagua that have something to do with the field you want to work in will remind you of your intention.

We have a large bookshelf in our front entry (Career bagua). It was filled with cookbooks and a variety of other books. I removed the cookbooks (a previous career of Hubby’s) and put them on a shelf in the Health bagua. Then I grabbed a bunch of his sociology books from a shelf in the basement and put them on the front entry shelf. (In case you’re wondering, we have LOTS of bookshelves throughout the house.)

Daughter and I removed an old 1920s floor radio from the front entry because it was preventing us from fully opening a closet door (very bad feng shui). I found a larger, covered container for our keys and added some decorative elements that spoke of glass, metal, and water (all good for the Career bagua).

We have quite a bit of black and white (the appropriate colors for the Career bagua) in the front entry, but there is one more item I want to add. I created a wall hanging of white and silver embroidery on black velvet a number of years ago. It has silver, metal snowflakes as part of the scene. Once I attach a hanging mechanism to the back of it, I’ll put it in the entry because it has so many feng shui elements for the career area: black, white, metal, and water (the snowflakes). It was this piece I was thinking of this morning when I got started on my little project. Stands to reason it would be the last thing up and it won’t make it today.

Shannon and Ed were married 11 years ago today! What a gorgeous day it was and a fabulous wedding I will never forget. Classic black and white formal dinner, Vera Wang silk satin gown, white candles everywhere and dancing to a live big band. At the time, Shannon and I worked together as seamstresses so all day we would gab and gab about all the details and plans and magazines. She was ( and still is ) so detail oriented that she ( and Ed too ) would stay up nights glueing pearls on tulle for the almond favors and tiny black velvet ribbons around all the candles. All the planning and perusing and dreaming that went into Shannon and Ed’s wedding day left a lasting love of all things wedding forever. So I guess you could say today is an important day for Emplume too, since some of the seeds that became Emplume were planted on that day!

But most importantly the day was all about joining together 2 wonderful people who are meant for eachother more than any other couple I know.

I looked at my calendar and couldn’t believe what day today is…

32 years ago a whole world was heartbroken. An angel went back to Heaven. One of the few angels we had on this earth.

So, today, along with probably hundreds of thousands of other people, I’ll remember him. Not that I ever forgot him. He’s been one of my best friends, even if I never met him and wasn’t even born whilst he was alive.

Recipe: Black Velvet

Ingredients:

1 part Guinness Stout
1 part chilled champagne (preferably Taittinger)

Directions:
Add the Guinness to a pint glass, and pour the champagne on top.

This drink recipe comes from Ian Fleming’s Diamonds Are Forever. In the novel, Bond offers to buy Bill Tanner lunch at Scotts, where they will have “dressed crab and a pint of black velvet.” A Black Velvet consists of equal amounts of Guinness Stout and champagne. The drink supposedly originated in London’s Brooks Club in 1861, created on the occasion of Prince Albert’s death. This is also the first time that the literary Bond has a brew.

National Champagne Day

Aug 4th is National Champagne Day or should I say yet another excuse to have a drink or two!!! Now I don’t mind a spot of bubbly, but I find it a bit boring on it’s own which is why I’ll be having a Champagne cocktail to celebrate.

I haven’t quite decided on with one I shall have, I quite feel like a classic such as the Kir Royale where you put 1/4 oz of creme de cassis into a Champagne flute and gently top with bubbly. If you fancy this, but don’t have creme de cassis you can substitute raspberry liqueur.

Then again I’ve been hankering for a stout this week so a Black Velvet may be the way to go. Fill a beer glass half way with Champers and then slowly top with stout.

However you enjoy your Champagne on the fourth have a great National Champagne Day!

Piece of Cake

A new cake has been made for the tin by the kettle – a rather nice chocolate sponge with a coconut chocolate topping.

The recipe is taken from ‘Delia Smith’s Cookery Course Part Two‘ book. It’s based on her quick & easy ‘All-in-one sponge’ recipe:

4 oz/110 g self raising flour, sifted
1 tsp baking powder
4 oz/110 g soft margarine, at room temperature
4 oz/110 g caster sugar
2 tbs cocoa powder
2 large eggs
2-3 drops vanilla essence

Pre-heat the oven to gas mark 3/325ºF/170ºC

Lightly grease a 7-inch/18 cm sponge tin and line its base with greaseproof paper (also greased) or silicone paper.

Take a large roomy mixing bowl, and sift flour and baking powder into it, holding the sieve high to give the flour a good airing. Then simply add all the other ingredients to the bowl, and whisk them – preferably with an electric hand whisk – till thoroughly combined. If the mixture doesn’t drop off a wooden spoon easily when tapped on the side of the bowl, then add 1 or 2 teaspoonfuls of tap-warm water, and whisk again.

Add to the prepared tin, level off and bake on the centre shelf of the oven for about 30 minutes. When cooked leave it in the tin for only about 30 seconds, then loosen the edge by sliding a palette knife all round and turn it out onto a wire cooling rack.

To finish:

Melt 100 g milk chocolate in a bowl over hot water (bain marie). Add 1 tbs dessicated coconut to the chocolate and spread over the top. Finish with a further sprinkle.

It can be tweeked with all kinds of other flavours, fillings & toppings – vanilla, ginger, dried fruit etc. We also like the look of this new version that Delia has on her own website

If you prefer a thicker cake with a middle layer of butter cream, jam etc, just double the quantities, and use two tins.

It’s delicious – give it a go next time you have a few minutes to spare – and enjoy it with a nice cuppa!

A Continue? Special Release: A Whole Lotta' Andy

Yes Folks we have something special for you today! Our own Andrew Ragazzo has released an epic compilation of himself singing ’80s songs. Andy has long been a proponent of ’80s music and anyone who has heard him passionately sing “Eye of the Tiger” can attest to his virtuousity. Michael Buczkowski said, “It was like a bolt of lightning hit me in crotch.”

Ragazzo had been planning this album for ages he says, but he wanted to surprise everyone with it’s sudden release. Andy decided to use his time off from Canisius to put the finishing touches, cleverly telling everyone around him that he’s: “bored… and there’s nothing to do.”

Little known to the world is the fact that Andy had his musical start long before his solo ’80s album with The E-Board Five in 1972. A short lived group due to controversy when 6th member Chris Shea was left out of the group because band leader Justin decided, “Five was just more catchy.”

But Andrew had bigger ambitions, and they have now manifested themselves into this amazing album. Andrew proclaims, “It took 37 years, but I’m back in the game Bitches!” right before ripping his shirt off (his second for this interview) and shredding on the air guitar in a manner reminiscent of Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure.

I would provide you with some samples of Andy’s music but I don’t have legal permission, and as you may or may not know he is a friend of Chuck Norris – (who you don’t look for: he finds you) so you’ll have to buy the album ONLY at your local Media Play, with whom Andy signed an exclusive distributing contract in 1996.

One thing that can be said of Andy is that he doesn’t forget the little people, his album features multiple dedications and duets to and with friends such as: “Black Velvet (featuring Garrett Weinholtz)”; and “I Touch Myself (featuring Michel Brind’Amour)”; and my personal favorite: “Don’t Stop Believing (dedicated to yours truely)”.

- Alessandro presentati ai lettori di MagPlus.

Mi chiamo Alessandro Baronciani, ho 33 anni e vivo tra Pesaro e Milano. Faccio l’illustratore, lavoro come art director per le agenzie pubblicitarie, faccio fumetti. I fumetti li faccio sul treno. Pesaro-Milano sono quasi 5 ore adesso che l’alta velocità ha tolto tutti gli altri treni diretti per Milano. Tocca scendere a piacenza e aspettare un altro treno, regionale, che arriva a Milano con quasi mezz’ora di ritardo. I fumetti sono la mia passione. Mi piace disegnarli perchè mi piace raccontare storie. Raccontare storie vuol dire anche poterle inventare. Nel senso che molte volte me le invento. Anche se parto da cose vere. I miei amici lo sanno che si, insomma, alle volte, le sparo grosse…

- A cosa ti sei ispirato per la storia, presente nel tuo ultimo libro, “Quando tutto diventò blu?”

Volevo raccontare una avventura. E lo volevo fare in maniera originale. Volevo scrivere un’ avventura dove non bisognava espolare un luogo fuori nel mondo. E qui arrivano gli attacchi di panico. La storia racconta appunto l’avventura, o meglio a disavventura, di questa ragazza alle prese con un luogo profondo, immerso dentro di se. Ho scoperto che molte persone ne avevano sofferto, anche amici. E’ una malattia abbastanza sconosciuta anche se molto diffusa.

- Lavori con molti artisti del mondo della musica?

si, amo la musica, realizzo parecchie copertine e grafiche per dischi. Ultimamente ho realizzato il disco dei Sick Tamburo (ex Prozac+) e il vinile degli Afraid, un gruppo di Vicenza, a forma di cigno. Mi piace. Non ci si prende tanti soldi però puoi metterti in portfolio dei bellissimi lavori. Altri gruppi con cui ho lavorato sono Bugo, Tre Allegri Ragazzi Morti, Perturbazione, e il gruppo dove suono: Altro.

- Disegnare quanto tempo prende alla tua vita?

Tutto. E’ il mio lavoro. Mi fa sempre ridere l’idea che qualcuno mi dia dei soldi per fare una cosa che mi piace e che faccio da quando sono piccolo. Bisognerebbe lavorare con una passione. E ad una propria passione. Con questo voglio dire che per passione bisogna fare anche cose che non ci piacciono ma che, in un certo senso riguardano la propria passione. Quello che si dice esperienza. Nel senso che lo sapevo che quella prova per il libro a fumetti di inglesi sull’australia per l’editoria scolastica sarebbe andato a buon fine. Sapevo che avrei dovuto studiarmi l’Australia e che, a me, l’Australia fa schifo. Poi però disegnandola, studiandola, comprando libri sul continente me ne sono innamorato e adesso non vedo l’ora di farci un viaggio.

- Raccontaci come nasce e si sviluppo il tuo gruppo musicale: gli Altro.

Perchè uno sfogo? Gli Altro sono un gruppo punk! Suoniamo da più di 10 anni. Quando abbiamo iniziato a suonare non c’erano i cellulari. Se volevi suonare in un’altra città dovevi chiamare a casa dei genitori del ragazzo che organizza concerti. Un po’ come quando dovevi chiamare la ragazza che ti piaceva alle superiori.
Abbiamo realizzato tre dischi e tre settopollici. Suoniamo male, nel senso che quando siamo sul palco è come cadere dall’ultimo piano di un palazzo: chiudi gli occhi finchè non arrivi alla fine. Con gli occhi chiusi non riesci a vedere cosa stai suonando.

Altro – Canzone di Andrea

- Com’è stato partecipare al tributo ai Diaframma di Federico Fiumani?

Bellissimo. un giorno mi sono trovato una chiamata sul cellulare, e una voce che diceva:”Ciao sono Federico Fiumani dei Diaframma, volevo chiedervi se potete registrare una canzone per un disco di tributo al gruppo dove suono”. Non sapevamo chi avrebbe suonato dentro tranne i i Tre Allegri Ragazzi Morti. Avevamo scelto una canzone da “In perfetta solitudine”, al telefono gli dissi che quando avevamo iniziato a suonare facevamo la cover di “Altrove“. E lui ha accettato al posto dell’altra. Ci siamo conosciuti ad un concerto insieme alla foce del Po’.
E’ salito sul palco con noi e ha cantato “Passato“. Ma la cosa più bella è stata cenare insieme e parlare seduti al tavolo. E’ questa la vera ragione per cui si fanno i concerti: cenare una sera con una persona che vuoi conoscere in una parte del mondo che non avresti mai visto diversamente.

- Puoi darci qualche news sui tuoi progetti futuri?

Spero di finire il prossimo libro per Lucca di quest’anno. Io e Omar (l’editore) ci teniamo particolarmente. Quindi ti aspetto a Lucca per il libro nuovo!
