What a Week! I brought you the web’s first review of the pre-release BlackBerry 9000 (thanks eBay!), then I announced the 9000’s new BlackBerry Bold name to world. Now it’s time to BE BOLD and finish things off with the final release features & specs of the new BlackBerry Bold Smartphone. Much of following was known, and I’ll skip the standard BlackBerry gimmes, but we now have precise answers to some of our lingering questions, including the internal memory the BlackBerry Bold will feature…

All good stuff, but you can see in orange what has me excited here. When it comes to memory, the 9000 will be packing a Gig of built-in storage space for media files, etc. You won’t be able to install applications on this (that’s what the 128MB flash space is for), but it’s still a welcome and much needed addition. It also seems all of us frustrated BlackBerry/iTunes users will no longer be frustrated!! And native DivX support? Sweet!

I got my Bold 2 the day it came out and I have to say I’m not disappointed. I had very high expectations since my 9000 is amazing, but the 9700 is more than getting the job done.

Overall an amazing phone.

This is a fantastic device and unless you are and appreciate Blackberries you will not appreciate or understand the upgrades. First off, the 9700 and the rest of the high end berries have gone to high resolution screens. I believe this one is 480 x 320. For the size, it is one of the best. With respect to the trackball being replaced with track pad, I would say it is a great advancement, even though it took me a few days to get used to it. (I have had a pre-release model for a while.) With respect to emails and the Blackberry software it is second to none. I believe if you are a Berry fan, or interested in becoming a Berry user, this is a great way to become a believer.

That is the only reason I gave it a 4.5. Many people including my colleagues love the size, so as far as I am concerned, it is a personal thing about the size of the phone. But if you want a Blackberry, then you will surely not be disappointed.

Out of all of the devices and phones I have owned and tested this device falls in much higher than I expected. I have become spoiled with the Android Market and devices so even using phones even like the Touch Pro 2 have been disappointing (Android to windows mobile says enough). As far as the apps and the way this phone runs, amazing. I believe RIM is catching up the rest of the market (3G was a nice change) and that the name will sell itself. Yes the RIM devices are similar but if you did your homework maybe you would understand that there are a few more differences than just the 3G and the name. Perhaps you need to let go of the $13.00 prepaid phone that you have that has become your best phone and jump, this phone is worth it.

This is the best phone i have ever owned. I am coming from a T-Mobile G1 and this was well worth the upgrade. The battery life is excellent. I can go 2 days with out a charge with heavy use and it would still be fine. The screen is gorgeous. The keyboard is kind of tight but after some use you get used to it really quick. There is no lag and apps come up very quickly. The phone is all around beautiful and is well worth the upgrade.

Poor customer service is one of my biggest pet peeves, and lord knows, we encounter it virtually every day. Here’s my most memorable recent example, largely because of the sheer silliness of the situation. I visited Sel de la Terre Boulangerie, an upscale bakery serving gourmet breads, pastries, sandwiches and coffee.

• My offense: I ordered a medium coffee in a large cup so that it doesn’t spill in my car.
• The response: With a straight face, the cashier rang up a large because “we need to charge you for the extra milk you will be using.”

Brilliant – annoy a customer over a measly…get this…10 cents. Once I realized she was serious (which took an awkward 10 seconds or so), I dropped the extra dime on the counter and walked away, never to return. (There are at least 5 other places within close proximity serving as good or better coffee.)

Now for a positive spin. Because of this experience and countless others like it, we have come to expect such treatment, which is why it’s even more noteworthy when someone representing a company or brand surprises and delights you. And since the Thanksgiving season is all about showing gratitude and giving thanks, I want to call attention to someone, who on multiple occasions, has gone way above and beyond in providing me with superior service. His name is Kyle Cunningham, manager of the AT&T Mobility store at the Natick Collection in Natick, MA. For all of the legitimate criticism of AT&T’s shoddy 3G network and customer unfriendly policies, this guy makes up for all of it, and then some.

A bit of background. My BlackBerry Bold is near death. Despite OS upgrades, the device is super sluggish, has memory leak issues, and is powered by two almost completely drained batteries. Time for a new phone.

• The problem: I am not eligible for an iPhone 3Gs for another 5 months, and the “powers that be” will make no exceptions to this policy. Sound familiar?
• The solution: The best offer AT&T could make is $399 for the 12GB version, and only if I extend my contract for another 2 years. That is $200 more than the price I’d pay if I were eligible.

Sheer stupidity. I can cancel my account for $175 ($24 less), walk over to Verizon – whose network is far more reliable – port over my mobile number, and get a brand spanking new Motorola Droid for $200 with a 2-yr commitment. In other words, AT&T is telling a customer who has always paid on time, has 2 accounts (my wife is also a subscriber), and spends well more than the monthly average, that it will give him $24 to take a hike and go its biggest competitor. I guess AT&T doesn’t use CRM, segment its customer base, or care about retention or loyalty. Or if it does, it doesn’t know how to apply these tools and disciplines to real world situations. Maybe instead of spending time, money and resources on suing Verizon for false advertising, AT&T should focus its efforts on serving its customers.

Now that I got the marketing jargon in, back to the story. Despite it all, I am still with AT&T, because quite simply, Kyle provides the absolute best customer service on the planet. Having worked for mobile app company, WorldMate, I called on Kyle countless times over the past two years. In this particular case, Kyle not only did everything in his power short of risking his job, but he also offered to lend me his virtually brand new Bold until I am upgrade eligible. How often do you experience that caliber of service? I am 36 years old, and so far, just once in my lifetime. With nonsense business practices that create negative switching costs, AT&T puts an unfair burden on Kyle to keep subscriber attrition in check. I’m sure upper management doesn’t realize how lucky they are to have him.

In the spirit of the holiday, please express your appreciation to those who’ve served you well in the past year. If we let these folks know and share our stories with others (it’s as easy as a tweet or brief mention in conversation), just maybe kick-ass service will start to become a trend.

I have one request of anyone taking the time to read this blog; go buy a smartphone, if you haven’t bought one already.  Last year, I had the good fortune to get invited to RIM’s Toronto launch party of the Blackberry Bold 9000.  The event itself was pretty cool.  There were free booze and salsa dancers.  But the product… Even a year later, I still have a tough time harnessing the true power of this device.  It’s amazing.

It doesn’t matter if you don’t like Blackberry’s.  While somewhat of an anomoly, you’re more than entitled to that totally lame opinion.  Checkout the iPhone, the Pre or the new Droid instead.  

My simple point is that the smartphone market is burgeoning, and innovation in this space is absolutely staggering.  In North America, mobility is no longer an option.  It’s an imperative.  I managed mobility solutions for several years at my current employer, and I wanted to share some simple tips and advice for you, the soon-to-be-consumer, of the smartphone.

• Avoid long-term commitment.  I realize contracts are often a requirement to get a decent price on the phone, but don’t go beyond a 24-month maximum term.  The technology advances are just too rapid in the mobile space, and you’ll be left with a choice between antiquated hardware or pricey cancellation fees.
• Identify what you want to decommission or converge.  Smartphones can really do it all, but do you want yours to?  For example, you may decide you will also use your phone as your portable media player, but you will continue to use your GPS, despite the fact your phone has that feature as well.  Often, you will find that while the smartphone provides that option, the features and functionality are not as robust as devices specialized in a given vector.
• It all about the applications.  Make sure the phone’s Operating System has a vibrant and active development community.  Obviously, the iPhone has a ton of development already completed, but the Pre does not have as many options.  Be aware that Apple’s review practices are beginning to frustrate some developers, and many are moving towards the Blackberry SDK or the new Google Android. 
• Hardware matters.  Your phone goes everywhere with you, so get one that feels durable and rugged.  Remember, don’t cheap-out.  The cost of the smartphone pales quickly when compared to what the carriers are going to charge for your monthly plan.  Don’t get sucked in to a lower-end phone because it’s free with a given plan.  Buy the one you want, and that you think will provide value for the (not-to-exceed-24-month) term.
• The network effect.  So while EVDO may be the more advanced technology, it’s losing to HSDPA in terms of pervasiveness, and international availability.  In the US, both technologies are near ubiquitous, but AT&T’s network is really hammered.  In Canada, all carriers are moving to HSDPA, so do not buy a EVDO or CDMA phone.

So, there you have it.  A bit of advice in time for the holidays.  I have to say, these are only my opinions based on my exposure both as a consumer and as a technology manager at work.  I’m happy to hear any of your views, so please feel free to leave your feedback!

So Verizon has announced their loaded holiday phone lineup a few days ago, but what about AT&T and T-Mobile? For sure they got some new phones ready to spend some holiday cheer with right? Of course they do, and we’re talking some really nice ones– like new BlackBerrys,  and even a new Samsung Behold 2 and LG Shine 2. What you waiting for, hit the link and get to it!

Ok, so let’s start with T-Mobile’s new phones first, and let’s start with the brand new, Google Android packing, Samsung Behold 2.

So the myTouch 3G just isn’t what your looking for in a new all touchscreen Android phone. You want something different, something more sleek and customized while still keeping Android. If so then this is gonna be the phone for you. Samsung and T-Mobile are bringing out the next version of the popular all touchscreen Samsung Behold, and boy is this some major upgrade. Not only are you now getting a clear, awesome 3.2 inch AMOLED screen that Samsung loves to use on new devices (see Sprint’s Android powered Moment, AT&T’s Impression, and Verizon’s Rouge), but also adding WiFi AND Android. Now this is what we call an upgrade to a device.

Samsung even customized Android further (like what HTC and Motorola have done with HTC Sense and MOTOBLUR respectivly), giving a nicer look to Android, while even throwing in things like TouchWiz for more widgets, and a very cool looking 6-way “cube” for accessing the multimedia features of the phone like YouTube, the internet, the Amazon Mp3 store, as well as your pix, music and videos.

Other specs on the phone include 3G, GPS, 5 megapixel camera with flash, auto focus and video (like the first Behold), Android 1.5 (sadly this isn’t the new Android 2.0 like on the Droid) with apps like Google Maps, Android Market, Google Talk etc., and up to 16 GB of memory through microSD card.

All in all, a pretty solid phone that if priced right (below $200– though price is currently unknown), could be a solid phone for T-Mobile users when it launches tomorrow on November 18th.

Ok, now let’s go to AT&T’s side of things, but before we do that, let’s take a look at the all the new 3G BlackBerry Bold 9700 that will be coming to BOTH T-Mobile and AT&T over the next few days.

The new Bold is just sick, a pretty much perfect upgrade to the first AT&T-only Bold. You got a design similar to that of Verizon and Sprint’s Tour (it also is no where near the massive size of the first Bold), which has a great feel in the hand, while also giving you that new optical trackpad found on the Curve 2. Specs wise, you get everything you’d expect in the highest end BlackBerry:

• 2.44 inch display– A tad smaller than the first Bold’s, but still a nice, big screen.
• 3G–  on both AT&T and T-Mobile’s versions.
• WiFi– And when on T-Mobile you can use this with Hotspot @Home
• GPS
• 3.2 megapixel camera with flash, auto focus and video– Up from 2 megapixel on the first Bold.
• Visual Voicemail
• microSD slot
• BlackBerry OS 5.0 with BlackBerry App World for apps.

T-Mobile users can pick up a Bold 9700 now for $200 with a new 2 year contract and an Even More plan, and AT&T users can pick their’s  up this coming Sunday the 22nd, also for $200 (and can check it out now at AT&T’s business preview site).

BlackBerry Curve 8520

AT&T’s BlackBerry Curve 8520

Ok, so this is pretty much the AT&T version of T-Mobile’s Curve 2 that they released over 3 months ago (hey, better late then never we suppose), and is pretty much the same phone, specs wise:

• Thin design– Like all the latest BlackBerry’s, this thing definitely looks nice and should be easy to carry around.
• Touch Sensitive Optical Trackpad– Like with the new Bold 9700.
• Full QWERTY keyboard– Wouldn’t be a BlackBerry without it.
• Dedicated Media keys– This is also new for BlackBerry’s, as you now have dedicated play/pause, rewind and fast forward keys like you find on most non-smartphones. This should be great for controlling your music while your phone is in your pocket and is about time BlackBerry added this.
• 2 megapixel camera with video recording– Decent camera, but not as great as the Curve 8900 which is 3.2 megapixel with flash and video recording.
• BlackBerry App World– For downloading apps.
• Mp3 player with microSD card slot
• WiFi– Though no 3G.

This BlackBerry is expected to come out sometime over the next “couple of weeks” for $99.99 on a new 2 year contract (though seeing as you can get the Bold 9700 with more power and 3G for just $100 more, we’d recommend going for that– remember, your signing a 2 year and in the long haul that 3G is more than worth it in my opinion).

LG Shine 2

Finally! Seeing as the Shine has been out since 2007, we figure it’s about time AT&T got to updating this popular phone. The aptly named Shine 2, is that successor, though sadly, minus a few new design changes it is pretty much the same ‘ol Shine. Meaning you still got a 2 megapixel camera, 3G, that miror like 2.2 inch screen, GPS and a microSD card slot.

Pretty simple and should be a solid phone, but come on AT&T– why is this $119.99 in 2009 almost 2010! The old Shine, which again had pretty much the same specs and look, was pretty much free on contract! Let’s hope this price becomes much lower and reasonable (maybe between $30 and $50 with contract) very soon after it launches with the Bold 9700 (only $80 more!) on Sunday, November 22nd.

We are sure many owners of the original Blackberry Bold 9000 will be wondering why they’ll want to upgrade only a year later. We’ll be answering these questions to help you come to your own conclusions.

In this post we’ll be comparing the new Blackberry Bold 9700 or Blackberry Bold 2 with its predecessor the Blackberry Bold 9000 or Blackberry Bold 1. In the world of smartphones a year is a long time and the Blackberry Bold has evolved.

So what are the main differences that you really want to know about and what do they mean?

The keyboard

If you own the original Bold 9000, you probably love the keyboard. At the time it was the best QWERTY keyboard available on the market. Sure it added to the width of the phone and made it bit chunky, but avid emailers couldn’t live without it.

Well Blackberry has addressed the width and perhaps surpassed themselves with the keyboard. It’ll take a bit of getting used to and we wouldn’t be surprised if your first impressions are that it is not as easy as the original. However, Shaun described it in his detailed review as the best front facing keyboard on the market, light to the touch whilst being extremely accurate for super quick thumb typing.

So if you love your thumb typing, once you are over the initial change there should be no looking back.

Display

The display size is slightly smaller than the original, but this is made up for by the resolution which is larger at 480 x 360 pixels. The quality is exceptional for both pictures and video, so if you upgrade you’ll be getting more pixels for your money and even better quality.

Size

If you found the original Bold a bit chunky, you’ll find that Blackberry have worked wonders on the size of the Bold 9700. It is now a much sleeker device and is a whole 16g lighter. With 6mm less width, 5mm less height and 0.9mm less depth the handset it is a lot less bulky in the pocket, with a great in hand feel.

Again there should be no regrets in upgrading here.

Navigation

Gone is the trackball, being replaced with optical trackpad. It gives a very natural feel to phone. There has been talk of unreliability of the trackballs and the trackpad which was introduced on the Blackberry Curve 8520 is known to be very reliable and great to use.

Moving on from the trackball to trackpad should be a natural transition and with added reliability there should be nothing to worry about.

Connection

The big difference here is the Bold 9700 is a full 3g phone, making email downloads even quicker and really opening up the world of internet browsing.

It is a speedy phone already and the 3g just makes it even better.

Battery

With the Bold 9700 Blackberry have surpassed themselves, and produced a smartphone with phenomenal battery life. They have obviously worked hard to optimise the software to work efficiently with an industry leading 1500mAh battery. So you shouldn’t have to worry about lugging your battery charger with you all the time.

Blackberry stats claim up to 6 hrs talk time and 17 days standby time on the Bold 9700, compared with 4.5 hrs talk time and 13.5 days standby time on the Bold 9000.

So again it is another big improvement on the original.

Performance

The performance is fantastic, the combination of a 624 Mhz processor and an OS widely regarded as one of the most efficient in the business, plus 256MB of memory, performance isn’t an issue. You’ll be listening to music and switching between multiple applications without the Bold 9700 stuttering or stalling.

Camera

The camera has been upgraded from a 2 megapixel camera to a 3.2 mega pixel camera. It is unlikely to impress David Bailey, but with zoom capability and an LED flash, it is great for those quick off the cuff snaps you need to keep Facebook and Twitter up to date. The 2x digital zoom operated by the trackpad is quite handy, especially with its good autofocus function.

Video

The video camera is good, if not amazing. It stands up well to other phones on the market and does the basics you’ll need recording at 30 frames per second and capable of 480 x 352 recording.

There isn’t a full video suite for editing afterward, but it should meet most people needs.

Side by side specifications

All in all it is quite a comprehensive upgrade, both from the surface and under the hood. Nothing in itself may be a deal clincher, but added together the features make quite a compelling case for the new Blackberry Bold 9700.

RIM has decided to update both its flagship devices at the same time, so following the Storm 2, we’re now treated to the Blackberry Bold 9700 – Watch the T3 BlackBerry Bold 9700 video.

The keyboard is the most noticeable difference between this and the original version, with 6mm less room to work with.

The result is keys which are a lot closer together than the paddle like buttons on the first Bold, but at the same time they’ve been re-modelled to keep the supreme typing ability of the first.

The design also now apes that of the Storm, with a lock and mute key sitting flush with the body at the top of the phone, rather than a big chrome button.

BlackBerry 9700 is a lot sleeker and more stylish than the previous Bold 9000, even down to making the chrome band around the edge more understated.

But it’s not all about the aesthetic changes – the Blackberry Bold 9700 has a lot more going on under the hood.

Souped-up innards

The processor has been souped up to 624MHz, and boy, can you feel it working. Where other BlackBerrys have struggled with more high end media tasks, such as displaying the thumbnail images of your recent snaps, this new Blackberry Bold 2 sprints through the task with ease.

The OS has been re-booted as well – BB OS 5.0 is all change for the regular BlackBerry user, with better designed menus and easier to find elements – for instance music and video are now grouped together in one place rather than the Music application swanning off on its own, making out it’s more important than video playback.

But this OS update hasn’t really affected the main core of the new Blackberry Bold 2, with messaging still as seamless as ever to set up. Simply enter in your Enterprise details to get push email from your company, or if you’re a webmail person you only have to put in your name and password to begin receiving updates.

Tapping out messages is a pleasant experience too, with the newly remodelled keys neither too firm or too soft and clicky (we’re wondering if they were designed by a blonde girl and some bears). While we’re not BlackBerry addicts, we were able to get a reasonable level of accuracy fairly soon after picking up the phone.

We’ll be honest and say we still prefer the keyboard on the original Bold, but this is a very good second best.

Multimedia maestro

Media playback is becoming ever more important to RIM, with the presence of a 3.5mm headphone jack testament to that fact.

Video is stunning on the upgraded HVGA screen, packing 480 x 320 pixels resolution into the 2.4-inch display. While this may be a little small for watching feature length films, it’s perfectly acceptable to while away those boring minutes when the train is once again late.

Music is a similar experience – it’s got all the bits you’d need from a mobile phone MP3 player (although the Blackberry Bold 9700 can also playback AAC+ and WMA too). There’s album art, the normal set of navigation keys and the option to put any song into a playlist from the ‘Now Playing’ screen.

Browsing bugs

One big let down, as has been the case with so many BlackBerries in the past; the internet browser is poor, with a slow experience coupled with very low range of technologies supported (such as flash). We’d have hoped for something like tabbed browsing but instead we’re forced to resort to downloading trusty Opera instead.

But the biggest change of them all is the battery life improvement, with nearly 1.5 days of normal usage (push email, Wi-Fi running all the time) at a stretch. But it basically spells the end of having cart around a spare battery or charger in case of a juice-less situation, which is going to be a big selling point for BlackBerry lovers.
