2 weeks ago we were sunning ourselves on the beach at the Witterings… and yesterday we had to pick the kids up early as all the roads round us in West Sussex were closed due to flooding! Welcome to a typical British Summer!

So it was with trepidation that we planned for our weekend camping in a helicopter last weekend. We often camp at Blackberry Woods – as it is only up the road in Lewes, plus the fact they allow camp fires as well as having some crazy mad retro vehicles to stay in

Last year we holidayed in an old routemaster double decker bus… but this years new addition to their fleet was an old RAF helicopter (dubbed the HOLICOPTER) and we thought we would give it a try.

The weather was unbelievably kind – so we got to hang out round out outdoor kitchen and campfire – cooking up mexican chicken, marshmallows and other camp fire treats. The kids loved that they had kept the pilots seats so they could clamber up and ‘fly the helicopter’.. and there was the cutest cabin at the back for the kids to stay in – complete with disco lights… and camouflage upholstery.

Good times people… we will be back next year…

There’s a gazillion campsites in East Sussex and I can’t possibly get round to reviewing them all. In my opinion, Blackberry Woods in Streat is very special. It’s really close to Brighton (about £25 in a taxi if you don’t drive) and makes a great weekend get away. The campsite has individual glades amongst the trees so you’re not particularly overlooked. There are barbeques and firepits in each glade. The campsite is a close enough walk to Ditchling where you can stock up on food and wine at Chesterton’s and also get a decent pint and pub grub at The Bull. I also really like the walk to Plumpton, with a stop off at The Half Moon for a pint of cider (why do I always drink cider when I walk?). If you don’t like the idea of pitching a tent, the campsite has retro caravans that you can hire.
