Performing a time study is relatively easy compared to only few years ago.  The technologies available today allow studies to be conducted quite readily.

Time Studies and OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness)

The Performance factor for OEE is based on the Ideal Cycle Time of the process.  For fixed rate processes, the Name-Plate rate may suffice but should still be confirmed.  For other processes such a labour intensive operations, a time study is the only way to determine the true or ideal cycle time.

When measuring the cycle time, we typically use ”button to button” timing to mark a complete cycle.  It can be argued that an operator may lose time to retrieve or pack parts or move containers.  Including these events in the gross cycle time will hide these opportunities.  It is better to exclude any events that are not considered to be part of the actual production cycle.

When calculating the Performance factor for Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), the efficiency shortfalls will be noted by the less than 100% performance.  The reasons for this less than optimal level of peformance are attributed to the activities the operator is required to perform other than actually operating the machine or producing parts.

All operator activities and actions should be documented using a standardized operating procedure or standardized work methodology.  This will allow all activities to be captured as opposed to absorbed into the job function.

The BlackBerry Clock – Stopwatch

One of the tools we have used on the “fly” is the BlackBerry Clock’s Stopwatch function.  The stopwatch feature is very simple to use and provides lap time recording as well.

When performing time studies using a traditional stopwatch, being able to keep track of individual cycle times can be difficult.  With the stopwatch function, the history for each “lap” time is retained.  To determine the individual lap time or cycle time, we recommend dividing the total lapsed time by the number of completed cycles (or laps).

The individual lap times are subject to a certain degree of uncertainty or error as there will always be a lead or lag time associated with the pushing of the button on the BlackBerry to signal the completion of a cycle.  Although this margin of error may be relatively small, even with this level of technology, the human element is still a factor for consideration.

Once the time study is complete you can immediately send the results by forwarding them as an E-mail, PIN, or SMS.

The BlackBerry Camera – Video Camera

Another useful tool is the video camera.  Using video to record operations and processes allows for a detailed “step by step” analysis at any time.  This is particularly useful when establishing Standard Operating Procedures or Standardized Work.

Uploading videos and pictures to your computer is as easy as connecting the device to an available USB port.  In a matter of minutes, the data is ready to be used.

Video can also be used to analyze work methods, sequences, and also serves as a valuable problem solving tool.

I had a particularly bad day today and I have no idea why.  I felt really crappy when I left the house.  Mind you, I dind’t get a terribly good night’s sleep so that could have had something to do with it.  All day I felt really down but the day went fairly quickly, thank goodness and I came home, had tea and sat down to do bugger all.  Things picked up for a while but they seem to be back to where they were 2 weeks ago and slowly sliding again.

We caught up on Fringe and are now sitting down to watch Sweeney Todd.  Paul doesn’t really do musicals but he’s quite enjoying this one.  It’s mostly because it’s Johnny Depp and Tim Burton gothic style.  Must admit, I like the Johnny Depp/Helena Bonham-Carter pairing.

I’ve been getting clued up what deals I can get with a Blackberry so I’m going to try my luck with O2 tomorrow and see what they can do for me.  I was going to ring them tonight but truth be told I just can’t be arsed!  I can’t wait till January though.  I always need to have everything yesterday…terribly impatient.  Watch this space…

Yesterday when I was trying to check my twitter my internet service was down so I called the carrier and turns out that it is the bis or blackberry internet service that’s down. And it looks like it not only effecting tmobile (which I have) it is effecting all carriers. Two of my friend have the tour and on has a bold on att and thers was down to so I will definitly keep you posted on this.

Dengan aliran pendapatan strategi ganda, yang dijalankan berupa keamanan teknologi dan kompresi data mengalirkan setiap e-mail, browsing, chatting, messenger, serta media sosial dalam perangkat proprietari, sepertinya hanya iPhone yang pantas menandingi RIM, dan penantang berikutnya adalah ponsel cerdas berbasis Android.

Ini pun belum bisa diyakini 100 persen karena model bisnis iPhone hanya fokus pada pengembangan perangkat dan isi toko online (content store), sedangkan Android hanya fokus pada platform sumber terbuka (open sources). Di awali oleh Telkomsel yang meluncurkan Blackberry prabayar pertama di Asia pada April 2008, dengan basis pelanggan terbesar Telkomsel dengan mudah memancing di kolamnya sendiri untuk mendapatkan pelanggan puluhan ribu hanya dalam hitungan bulan. Tak mau ketinggalan pada Juli 2008 Indosat meluncurkan layanan prabayar mingguan dengan produk Blackberry on demand diyakini menjadi prasarana untuk tetap menjadi pemain terbesar Blackberry di Indonesia.

Bagi operator sendiri sepertinya menyadari sejak awal untuk mendapatkan pertumbuhan eksponensial harus melalui jalur prabayar mengedepankan kemudahan dan fleksibilitas biaya yang dikeluarkan pengguna.

Dan perlu diingat, adanya Blackberry yang masuk dalam kategori layanan nilai tambah dalam konteks ekosistem jasa GSM tersebut memberikan andil untuk penambahan pendapatan dari pelanggan yang dimilikinya. Dengan tendensi ARPU prabayar yang akan turun terus sejalan dengan jumlah pelanggan yang didapat dan tumbuhnya kesadaran untuk ”saya butuh internet”, maka layanan nilai tambah seperti Blackberry BIS bisa membantu untuk mencakup figur ARPU yang dimiliki.

Untuk kali ini, RIM sepertinya harus mengakui doktrin yang ada di Indonesia, ”Prepaid is the King”. Dan ini merupakan satu cara untuk menunjukkan kepada dunia bahwa Indonesia memiliki pola model pemasaran terbaik yang semuanya bisa mungkin terjadi layaknya sebuah ”an exception country”.

Ke depan apakah RIM akan tetap mendapatkan pertumbuhan double digit dengan mengandalkan layanan BIS yang sebagian besar dikontribusi oleh pelanggan prabayar, layak untuk kita cermati.

Just because your new radio in your 2010 Volkswagen has an option for Bluetooth streaming it doesn’t mean that your car has the necessary hardware to make it work.

Volkswagen uses two systems on their passenger cars option 9W2 and option 9W3. here is the catch 22: option 9W2 supports bluetooth streaming while 9W3 supports voice dialing, phone book transfer (expect on Jetta TDI/SEL) and caller ID.

I’m a big fan of Flickr and spend far too much time on it checking out other people’s photos and hoping that other people are checking out my photos (http://www.flickr.com/photos/richard_k/). One thing that mystifies me a bit though is Flickr’s “interestingness” rating. This score is automatically given to every photo on Flickr based on a number of elements – what tags you have given it, how many people view it, how many people comment on it, how many people call it a favourite and how many people leave notes on it. Not only that but it seems that it matters who comments/favourites/notes your picture. For example if I left a comment on your photo it wouldn’t carry as much weight as if someone who had loads of photos with high interestingness ratings commented on your photo. The most interesting photos each week get added to the Explorepage (http://www.flickr.com/explore/) which supposedly showcases the “best of the best”.

Some of my photos which I really like and personally find interesting are really low down in the list of my own interesting shots. For example I spotted this bloke in London and found him intriguing however apparently Flickr does not.

But for some reason Flickr rates the following photo really high:

It seems really hit and miss to me but there does seem to be a pattern to what makes a photo really interesting. If you regularly look through Explore you will find many photos that make you think “what is so interesting about that”? It seems that Flickr’sinterestingness algorithm absolutely loves pictures of Blackberry’s, mobile phones in general, Lego characters, or shots looking down the length of a guitar fretboard.

And the moral of the story? Forget how interesting Flickr rates your shots, just enjoy taking the photos and sharing them.
