“How High?????????”

What’s happening ye faithful?  Happy Monday(if that is even possible) and happy holidays.  I hope everyone made it through the weekend with all of their fingers, toes and extremities.  It was a beautiful weekend in Chicago, minus the 4th.  The city was like a warzone Saturday night with the constant barrage of artillery shells, bottle rockets, m-80′s and Black Cats.  I can’t imagine how much the city wide cleanup is going to suck.  I remember cleaning up my dad’s basketball court after the 4th.  The clean up made shooting off hundreds of dollars worth of fireworks ALMOST not worth it.  I did some “legal” downloading this weekend to revisit one of hip hop’s best duos, Redman and Method’s Blackout!(1).  I used to listen to this album HEAVY in high school especially Da Rockwilder and Cerial Killer.  I can’t say I’m a BIG fan of their movie OR TV show but their music has always been dope.  This morning, I got hooked on their joint The ?.  I’m not sure if it’s pronounced The Question or The Question Mark.  Regardless, Red and Meth murder this song.  Reggie Noble even produces the track.  I was surprised to hear a Ja Rule sample in the hook too.  I’m starting a “Where The F is Ja Rule” campaign.  He had that joint with Lil Wayne last year that was actually kinda ill.  “I’m a young Raekwon, a chef is hell’s kitchen.”  Wayne USED to be so potent.  I actually put both Blackout and Blackout 2 on an MP3 cd and plan on riding to both all day.  I hate when rappers title their albums, Volume 1, 2, 3.  That is some of the laziest shit ever but I’m am expecting a halfway decent album from Red and Meth.  The first two songs are ill.  Here is some classic Red and Meth along with their biggest song to date, How High, which got them a movie and a TV show.  Enjoy.

Interview about new cd “Blackout 2″, Beefs, etc…

“Hey, Eminem,” Method Man barked into our mic recently, giving a heads-up to Sunday’s MTV Movie Awards main act. “F— that. Yo, Paul! We’re on the tour, man!”

“Paul!” Redman chimed in, also addressing Em’s manager, Paul Rosenberg, directly. “Hey, Paul, we’re on the tour, baby!”

“You know my number,” Redman said to Rosenberg. “Yo, Eminem. Yo, Paul — we on the tour, man.”

“Even if he don’t put us on, we’re coming in through the back door, jumping onstage,” he added.

Although the duo may not be fans of “Twilight,” there are two things they love: Eminem and being on the road.

“We’re gonna jump on Em’s tour — we’re putting it out there,” Method Man revealed. “We do tour a lot. I’d say altogether 10, 11 months a year.”

“Honestly, I’m gonna tell you exactly what that is — that’s how we get our bread now,” Red said. “That’s how MCs make their money. Those royalty checks come like babies — every nine months.

“Plus, we enjoy doing shows,” he added. “Anybody who’s come to a Method Man and Redman show knows that we give 110 percent every time we’re out there.”

“Plus, our movie ‘How High’ branched us out to a different audience,” Method Man agreed. “When we go around the world, the majority of our fans are a different descent than us — which is cool. I love it. That just shows we’re more outgoing with our music.”

And while Eminem seems to constantly be on the verge of wanting to retire, Method and Red say that they’ll never get tired of touring.

“We’re gonna be doing shows at 50, 55,” Redman grinned.

“Redman wants to go to Vegas!” Method laughed, making reference to last year’s “Soul Men,” a comedy about two middle-aged musicians deciding to head back out on the road.

“I’m gonna be like Sam Jackson,” Red grinned. “And he’s gonna be like Bernie Mac!”

To all those that had an older brother/sister or cousin to school them OR who were just old enough…. The 90s was truly about the MC and NOT the rapper…

One thing that is pretty huge for me when it comes to albums is the introduction. “BO2 (Intro)” is as close to it gets as a perfect introduction, Method Man & Redman set the album off perfectly with a beautiful beat by Wu-Tang affiliate Mathematics. Red spits, “When you see smoke in the air/two hot boys that put coke in your ear/fuck pimp, I wanna get dope of the year”. The second track on the album, “I’m Dope Ni**a”, has one of the grimiest, gulliest, greasiest beats I’ve ever heard, and Redman and Method Man slow down the flow to ride the track like a low rider on smooth ass pavement. Soul Brother #1 donates the soundscape for the track “A-Yo” with swift moving piano keys and the signature Pete Rock. Bun B brings the Southern tone to Blackout! 2 on the track “City Lights” and in my opinion it’s one of the best tracks on the album, not to mention Nasty Kutt‘s beat with hard hitting drums and spaced out synth is nothing short of a masterpiece.

As many people would expect, I feel as though “Four Minutes to Lockdown” is the highlight of the album. Anytime you throw Method Man, Redman, Ghostface & Raekwon on the same track the outcome is going to be absolute astonishment. Long time Roc-a-Fella affiliate Bink! provides an uptempo beat with glorious horns and short vocal samples, which is perfect for every one of these emcees. I would have to say “Four Minutes to Lockdown” might be one of the best collaboration tracks I’ve heard this year.

All in all this album has everything that makes a great album. The production is nuts, the guest appearances are clutch and Method Man & Redman still kill it. There are a few tracks that I casually skip over, but it doesn’t ruin the quality of the album at all. Blackout! 2 is much more than an average album, I highly suggest you go out and spend the cash on this one I know I did.

8.5 Dangerous Emcees out of 10

I don’t particularly know about the rest of you, but I grew up on these two.  And I’m so glad that they just dropped another album.  So glad that I might not even pirate it.  In any event here’s a teaser clip from their upcoming webseries The Next 48 Hours with Redman & Method Man.  Hopefully they’ll be able to make some kind of return to their former relevance because they definitely deserve to be heard/seen.  Bonus clip of Red & Meth on Jimmy Kimmel after the jump.
