I bought myself a new sketchbook. The last time I purchased a sketchbook of this sort was probably five years ago. I ordered two online because I couldn’t find the hard covered ones here. This time, however, I bought an A5 size because of my scanner and I do plan to take it with me. I also plan to document every single page. New year, new, organized me. It won’t matter whether the sketch is fine or not, it’s going to be blogged. I also bought a new pen, a Rotring .25 Isograph. I’ve been using this pen since high school back in the late eighties. If they discontinue this pen, I will die.

With a national title berth on the line, Saturday night’s contest for the Big 12 Championship betwee

With a national title berth on the line, Saturday night’s contest for the Big 12 Championship between the Texas Longhorns and Nebraska Cornhuskers was a game for the ages. While Texas QB Colt McCoy probably lost the Heisman Trophy with his performance, McCoy got his team’s wish of delivering on the chance to play for the national championship in Pasadena leading the ‘Horns to a 13-12 victory. Let’s take a look at what went right and what went wrong for both squads on Saturday night in Arlington.

Texas Longhorns
What went right?
Well, not much, really. While the Nebraska defense was superb, Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp and his squad’s effort should not be overshadowed. In a game where the Texas offense couldn’t stay on the field, the defense was asked to step up and keep the game within reach and they did. The defense gave up only 106 yards offensively to Nebraska – 39 passing and 67 rushing – and yielded only five first downs the entire game while tallying three turnovers.

The kicking game – and we’re talking the field goal unit only – was the star of the night. Senior kicker Hunter Lawrence was the epitomy of calm on Saturday night, as he was 2-for-2, including his game-winning 46-yard field goal as time expired.

What went wrong?
The Texas offense was absolutely pathetic. In large part, Nebraska’s defense is to blame – they played fantastic across the front four and in to the secondary – as they pressured McCoy all night, and locked down every receiver Texas threw at them. If Texas was going to play Alabama for the national title, the Nebraska defense gave them the best preparation they could ask for, and Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban will bring a similar defensive attack in Pasadena. As mentioned, with only 184 yards passing on 20-of-36 attempts and three INTs, McCoy did everything he could to potentially lose the Heisman Trophy race. As expected, the running game was also dominated by the Nebraska front four, gaining only 18 total yards (keeping in mind McCoy’s sacks contribute to that total). All told, the Texas offense gained only 202 yards of offense and 17 first downs on the night. Pure and simple, the offensive line played like a pee-wee team against one of the best defensive tackles in college football. Period.

Special teams continues to be a concern for the Longhorns as well. While there were no game-changing plays in the kicking game, they were far from perfect, as they gave up a big return late in the game that if not for Nebraska’s anemic offense, could have spelled trouble. Combine that with the partially blocked punt, and this group needs to get their edge back. Saturday’s game marks three games in a row where the specials have looked anything but, and it will need to get fixed before the national championship.

Nebraska Cornhuskers
What went right?
Obviously, the defense was phenomenal. The unit racked up nine sacks on the night, with 4.5 from defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh alone, and they held Texas to well under their season average in points and yards. More impressive, perhaps, was the effort from their secondary, which covered everything underneath and gave McCoy no where to throw when he was under pressure. They also kept Texas off the field with three key INTs, two of which were more on the receivers than McCoy, but eliminated Texas from getting any rhythm on offense. Despite the loss, the defense earned back the “Blackshirts” mantra of Cornhusker lore on Saturday night.

What went wrong?
The offense. If Texas’ offense was pathetic, the only word to describe the Nebraska offense is inept. Here again, the Texas defense played a large role in inhibiting the Cornhuskers to put up any points, but when your offense is geared to the run, and that is the Texas defense’s strength, you’ve got to try some different things offensively. The Cornhuskers’ offense managed only 1.93 yards per snap, and their stout running game had no back carry the ball more than seven yards on a single carry. Yikes. Early on, the Huskers tried to use play-action to tee up the long pass, but the Texas defensive backs came up with two big INTs when QB Zac Lee looked downfield. Lee can play better, but his Saturday night should leave all Big Red fans wondering his future at the position.

Moving Forward
In the end, a highly-desired BCS controversy was averted, and TCU and Cincinnati can sit back and think back to just how close they came to making their run for a national championship. Early BCS projections (although the final announcements will come 5:00p PT on Sunday) have Cincinnati in the Sugar Bowl facing Florida, while TCU and Boise State would match-up in the Fiesta Bowl, the first time a BCS bowl outside of the national championship game would host two undefeated teams. To round it out, Iowa (most likely) or Penn State would play Georgia Tech (ACC champ) in the Orange Bowl, and Oregon (Pac-10 champ) and Ohio State (Big 10 champ) will play for the Roses in Pasadena.

In the coming weeks, post-season awards will be won and lost, and bowl games will decide the fate of many schools 2009-2010 seasons. Come late Saturday night, however, McCoy and his team won the best post-season award of all – the Big 12 Championship and a chance to play for the national title.

Hook ‘em!

Hat tip to No Borders Brighton According to Speigel Online, “officials in the northern Italian

Hat tip to No Borders Brighton

According to Speigel Online, “officials in the northern Italian town of Coccaglio are visiting the homes of foreign residents and expelling those with expired residency permits.” There has been a “national uproar” over the incidence, particularly given that the action will last until December 25th and has been dubbed “White Christmas.”

Mayor Franco Claretti, of the fascist Northern League, has insisted that “Christmas isn’t the celebration of hospitality but, rather, of Christian tradition and our identity.” This nationalist rhetoric is how he justifies the need “to start cleaning things up.” As Kurosh Danesh, the national coordinator for immigrants for the CGIL, Italy’s largest trade union, put it, “it makes you think of the sound of the boots of the fascist soldiers in the ghetto of Rome chasing after Jewish inhabitants.”

Claretti and others have insisted that the action is “not racist” and that although the name was a “gross oversight,” the coverage in the newspapers has been “completely out of line, as well as offensive to good taste.” However, in a country which has revived the blackshirts, and initiated vicious pogroms against the Roma, such flimsy excuses ring hollow.

As BNP leader Nick Griffin’s call to “sink immigrants’ boats” in echo of Italy’s measure giving Libya patrol boats “to stem the flow of migrants illegally reaching Italian shores” demonstrates, Italy now serves as a litmus test of nationalist influence in Europe. They have now reached a point where leading figures in the Northern League, such as Giancarlo Gentillini, can openly say, “we must cleanse our streets of the black-skinned, the yellow-skinned, the Roma … I would have all the immigrants put on file, one by one. Unfortunately, this is not allowed by the law. They are the carriers of all sorts of diseases, tuberculosis, Aids, scabies, hepatitis.”

Events unfolding there serve as a warning of what could happen in this country if we let militant antifascism die. Those resisting that trend deserve our solidarity and support.

Nancy Pelosi upped the ante in the health care debate when she responded to a media question in the

Nancy Pelosi upped the ante in the health care debate when she responded to a media question in the following manner:

Interviewer: Do you think there’s legitimate grassroot opposition going on here?

Pelosi: “I think they’re Astroturf… You be the judge. “They’re carrying swastikas and symbols like that to a town meeting on healthcare.”

That being in addition to her reference to town hall protesters as “simply un-American.”

Well, first of all, Nancy Pelosi calls health care opponents “Astroturf,” and the propagandist mainstream media have duly found evidence of one or two emails from conservative groups instructing opponents of health care how to have maximum effect. Overlooked by both Pelosi and her media lackeys is the fact that liberal organizations are literally PAYING people to “defend Obama’s health care.”

The image she tries to project is a bunch of goose-stepping Nazis bringing their beloved swastikas with them like lucky charms.

Conservatives immediately complained: thousands of conservatives have attended town hall meetings around the country, and most of them hadn’t even SEEN a swastika at a town hall, much less carried one themselves.

But even the uber uber uber leftist Media Matters, trying to document that at least SOMEBODY really was carrying a swastika, end up inadvertently demonstrating a very different picture.

So there are your “swastika-toting conservatives.” A frightening mob of Nazis, they aren’t.

The thing is, what they are clearly saying is that they DON’T want Nazism or Swastikas. And they’re afraid that we’re seeing something in this health care agenda that smacks of the things they’re afraid of.

So a very, VERY few conservatives have brought signs that express their connection of ObamaCare to incipient Nazism. Is that so awful? First let us compare it to how Barack Obama, Dick Durbin, and Democrat protesters have used the word “Nazi.”

Democrat Sen. Dick Durbin compared American soldiers to Nazis:

“If I read this to you and did not tell you that it was an FBI agent describing what Americans had done to prisoners in their control, you would most certainly believe this must have been done by Nazis, Soviets in their gulags, or some mad regime—Pol Pot or others—that had no concern for human beings. Sadly, that is not the case. This was the action of Americans in the treatment of their prisoners.”

Barack Obama compared our entire country to Nazism:

“…just to take a, sort of a realist perspective…there’s a lot of change going on outside of the Court, um, that, that judges essentially have to take judicial notice of. I mean you’ve got World War II, you’ve got uh, uh, uh, the doctrines of Nazism, that, that we are fighting against, that start looking uncomfortably similar to what we have going on, back here at home.”

And of course images linking George W. Bush to Hitler or the devil are a dime a dozen. Here’s a picture at a liberal protest that manages to do both at once, giving Bush both devil horns and a Hitler mustache:

There’s a rather substantial compilation of Bush-as-Hitler comparisons here. But given the vast quantity of Bush derangement syndrome, it isn’t – and frankly can’t possibly be – anywhere near complete.

So on one hand you have to simply laugh (as in the kind of intense and sustained laughter that could literally cause you to die) at the sheer galling in-your-face hypocrisy and demagoguery of Nancy Pelosi and the left. The self-righteous, “How dare you? How DARE you?” tone doesn’t suit them at all.

But while the above deflates any liberal claim to outrage, it doesn’t justify throwing around Nazi Swastikas or using the word “fascist” at the Democrat’s health care plan. Do these protesters have any better justification than that?

I believe they do. And here’s why.

Reason One: Rush Limbaugh added a little gasoline to the fire that Nancy Pelosi started when he pointed out the visual similarity between the ObamaCare symbol and the Swastika. His point was that if pointing out Swastika symbols was good for the goose, it ought to be good for the gander as well.

Of course, the mainstream media came completely unglued. Rush Limbaugh played a rather lengthy montage of talking-point media outrage on his August 7 broadcast.

But apart from the obvious surface artistic similarities that people either recognize or refuse to recognize, there is a somewhat deeper and much more profound issue: Obama is essentially taking the symbol for medicine, and combining it with his own political campaign symbol. The result is the ostentatious politicizing of health care as ideology. It truly IS ObamaCare as Obama’s own symbol for it reveals!!! We haven’t seen anything like that in this country since the LAST time we embraced significant elements of fascism in our politics over 70 years ago. And it is dangerous.

And a growing number of people are realizing it.

Reason two: Politically, there are some rather frightening political developments from within the Obama administration. Former “journalist”-turned Obama hack Linda Douglas reveals both how corrupt journalism has become and how fascistic Obama can truly be in this pitch:

There is a lot of disinformation about health insurance reform out there, spanning from control of personal finances to end of life care. These rumors often travel just below the surface via chain emails or through casual conversation. Since we can’t keep track of all of them here at the White House, we’re asking for your help. If you get an email or see something on the web about health insurance reform that seems fishy, send it to flag@whitehouse.gov.

When was the last time you were asked to turn in people practicing their free speech rights to the White House? The White House is asking people to turn in emails, web sites, and even people in “casual conversation.” Can you imagine if the Bush White House had taken this course to collect information on protesters against the Iraq War? The New York Times would have run a 300-part series detailing it as rabid fascism. In this case, the blatant paranoia – and yes, the fascism – is being carried out by Barack Obama.

Reason three: But that’s not the only connection Democrat-activists now have with fascism. Now there’s also the “new Fascisti” in the form of union thugs who are coming in to intimidate and even beat conservatives at town halls. In fascist Italy, the Fascisti were the Blackshirted men who broke up opposition rallies with fists and whatever else was needed. In Hitler’s rise to power, it was the SA Brownshirts. Now it’s the SEIU Blueshirts. This certainly isn’t the first time Democrats have relied on union thuggery to accomplish their goals.

After decrying town hall health care protesters as an “angry mob,” Democrats are now bringing in goons to physically intimidate health care protesters.

It was Barack Obama who said:

“If they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun.”

And this former community organizer who is so outraged that communities have been organizing has brought a gun in the form of union thugs to the “knives” of mostly elderly ObamaCare protesters.

Democrat Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid accused elderly health care protesters “of trying to sabotage the democratic process,” by showing up at Democrat politicians town halls and demanding answers and shouting when they don’t get them. But look at what’s happening:

Over 1,000 St. Louis Tea Party Taxpayers showed up to attend the Russ Carnahan town hall meeting in South St. Louis. They were Locked Out! But… The Carnahah staff was sneaking in SIEU members in the side door marked “handicapped.”

Is shutting out American citizens and barring them from access to their elected leaders not the REAL “sabotage of the democratic process”? How is stacking the political deck with your own people while deliberately shutting out your political opponents not fascist? And as we’ll also see, how is bringing in burly union thugs to physically manhandle people for trying to express their political opinions not fascist?

In Tampa, Fla: Kathy Castor’s burly union thugs manhandled a small elderly man (in the green shirt) with stage 4 cancer and shut the doors on protesters’ faces to prevent opposing opinions from being heard.

The above footage is a little confusing. One of the protesters who was physically manhandled by the four burly thugs shoving them around at the same event tells his story.

Kenneth Gladney, a black conservative, was beaten by four thugs at another event as he offered “Don’t Tread on Me” flags while trying to get into a town hall meeting in Missouri.

Is that the only thing that prompts people to compare ObamaCare to Nazism via their homemade posters of Swastikas with the red line through of “NO!” through them?

Not even close.

Let us explore the real reason that so many people – both Republican and Democrat – are so virulently opposing this health care plan.

Reason four: There’s more than ample evidence that – contrary to Obama’s and the Democrats’ denials – that they very much DO want a government takeover of health care. And more and more people are realizing that this massive influx of pure socialism is not the American way.

Nearly three out of four (72%) Americans believe ObamaCare will add to the deficit, according to the most recent Quinnipiac University poll.

The current number being thrown around for Obama’s health care is $1.6 trillion over ten years. But government routinely massively underestimates its costs, as I’ve documented in the past. The CBO was off by 633% in its estimate of the cost of Medicare; and off by 10,900% in estimating the cost of Medicaid special hospitals. A reasonable figure – based on an average of past CBO underestimation of government cost to fund government programs – is that ObamaCare will cost about $13 trillion over ten years.

Our debt has exploded under Barack Obama. As the Wall Street Journal’s Michael Boskin put it:

Mr. Obama’s $3.6 trillion budget blueprint, by his own admission, redefines the role of government in our economy and society. The budget more than doubles the national debt held by the public, adding more to the debt than all previous presidents — from George Washington to George W. Bush — combined.

And that explosion is going to have huge consequences down the road.

If we put our health care system under government control, it is absolutely unavoidable that we will have to massively ration our health care resources down the road. And there’s the rub.

Somebody is going to suffer from neglect down the road, as scarce medical resources are allocated to some rather than others. And the elderly – who 1) are no longer represented in the work force while 2) consuming the lion’s share of medical resource – are going to start getting the short end of the stick.

The Obama administration may not want to admit it, but they have already embraced the idea of denying medical care to senior citizens, given their president’s choice of czars and top advisers.

Take Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel (White House Chief-of-staff Rahm’s brother) – PLEASE. Dr. Emanuel is the health-policy adviser at Obama’s Office of Management and Budget and is also a member of Federal Council on Comparative Effectiveness Research.

In January of THIS YEAR, Dr. Emanuel – who is a principal architect of the Democrat’s health care plan – wrote:

“When implemented, the Complete Lives system produces a priority curve on which individuals aged between roughly 15 and 40 years get the most substantial chance, whereas the youngest and oldest people get chances that are attenuated… The Complete Lives system justifies preference to younger people because of priority to the worst-off rather than instrumental value.”

For those of you who don’t know what “attenuated” means, let me save you from heading for your dictionary. It means, “to make thin; to weaken or reduce in force, intensity, effect, quantity, or value.” Basically, in Dr. Emanuel’s usage, it means, “Time to make room for the next generation and shove off, Grandma and Grandpa.”

Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel included a chart with his work (available here), which shows how he wants to allocate medical resources:

When you’re very young, or when you start reaching your 50s, you start becoming toast.

Take Cass Sunstein, Obama’s Regulatory Czar, who wrote in the Columbia Law Review in January 2004:

“I urge that the government should indeed focus on life-years rather than lives. A program that saves young people produces more welfare than one that saves old people.”

Barack Obama’s Regulatory Czar explains:

“If a program would prevent fifty deaths of people who are twenty, should it be treated the same way as a program that would prevent fifty deaths of people who are seventy? Other things being equal, a program that protects young people seems far better than one that protects old people, because it delivers greater benefits.”

Which very much jives with what Obama told a woman concerning her mother:

“At least we can let doctors know — and your mom know — that you know what, maybe this isn’t going to help. Maybe you’re better off, uhh, not having the surgery, but, uhh, taking the painkiller.”

Don’t let the coffin lid hit your face on the way out, Grandma and Grandpa.

Glenn Beck brought out these statements on his August 6 TV program, adding that he wouldn’t let these men bring him a can of Coke, much less give them the power to make health care policy and determine who lives and who dies.

Right now the decision as to how to allocate medical resources is divided up between innumerable people and organizations, both government and private. But if the “public option” wins the day, it will be centralized by men like Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel and Cass Sunstein. And as the government takes over health care, and as debt eats up government funding, men and women like Emanuel and Sunstein are going to be choosing death by denial of medical resources to increasingly more and more people.

THAT’S your big Reason. Rationed care. Denial of resources to the elderly. Death by neglect. THAT’S why health care protesters are screaming and shouting. THAT’S why people are carrying signs saying NO to the Swastika symbol of Nazi fascism. And with all due respect, it is a damn good reason to be frightened and pissed off to no end.

Keep your damned fascist paws off my parents’ health care, Obama.

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, liberal judicial activist of liberal judicial activists, had this to say about valueless life on the younger side (as opposed to Emanuel’s and Sunstein’s valueless life on the older side):

Ginsburg: Yes, the ruling about that surprised me. [Harris v. McRae – in 1980 the court upheld the Hyde Amendment, which forbids the use of Medicaid for abortions.] Frankly I had thought that at the time Roe was decided, there was concern about population growth and particularly growth in populations that we don’t want to have too many of.”

Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel wrote in 1996:

“Conversely, services provided to individuals who are irreversibly prevented from being or becoming participating citizens are not basic and should not be guaranteed.”

Enter Eugenics right out of Margaret Sanger, the founder of Planned Parenthood, and right out of Adolf Hitler, the architect of Nazism. Enter the reason why so many Planned Parenthood clinics are STILL primarily located in black neighborhoods all over America – i.e., “growth in populations we don’t want to have too many of.” Enter the reason Planned Parenthood is STILL comfortable with the idea of selectively aborting black babies.

And lest you forget, the infamous 1930s-era Tuskegee experiment – the racist and eugenics-based study that studied the effects of syphilis on deliberately untreated black men – ran straight through FDR’s New Deal, and through the course of his entire presidency.

Democrats are working to build a state in which it is the state which decides whether or not classes of people have the right to life, or the right to health care resources. They want to centralize decision-making, and make health care decisions for everyone so they can further control the economy (health care is 1/6th of the economy) and further control individual behavior.

The late (and very, very great) Dr. D. James Kennedy once prophetically said:

“Watch out, Grandpa; because the generation that survived abortion will one day come after you!”

One need only look at Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel’s chart depicting the odds of receiving medical care versus age to see that the day Dr. Kennedy warned us about is now coming with a vengeance.

So who’s right in throwing out comparisons of Nazism? If the choice is between Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi and the health care plan they’re pushing versus the angry crowds showing up at town hall meetings to oppose the plan, it’s not even close. First of all, let no one forget that “NAZI” stoof for the “National Socialist German Workers Party.” It was national socialism, as in the sort of socialism health care protesters are afraid of. Ronald Brownstein, senior writer at the National Journal, said recently that “The defining gamble of Barack Obama’s presidency is that the public today is willing to accept more government activism…“. Don’t think for a second that the Nazis did not build a vast government health care system, which they then used to advance their political agenda. And the German national government medical system under Nazism looked far more like the system that Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi want to impose than anything that the people shouting at town halls want to see.

When Bo Pelini inherited the Nebraska program, he walked into a pretty good situation. He led the team its 10th win of the year in its bowl game, which seemed to have set the stage for continuing the proud Nebraska tradition.

No, we’re not talking about 2008. This was in 2003 when the NU athletic department inexplicably fired Frank Solich for having the audacity to not be Tom Osborne. Sure, Solich was essentially the Nebraska version of Gary Gibbs: nice guy, mild-mannered and came from “within the family.” He also won about 9 games a year which was unacceptable to Nebraska fans who thought they were entitled to something after seeing their <del datetime="2009-07-18T15:01:29+00:00">felonious</del> great athletes in the 90s deliver a couple of titles. His real crime? Not sure. He won 58 games in six years, which was more than his predecessors Bob Devaney (53) and Tom Osborne (55) did in their first half dozen seasons.

Pelini took over the reigns of the program as Interim Coach at the end of the regular season (after Solich had already posted 9 wins that year), “righted” the ship and led the team to an Alamo Bowl win, complete with a couple of kickass meltdowns in which he had to be physically restrained from the officials (there’s something besides flouride in the Youngstown water, apparently).

This thing smells bullshit!

He was never able to move past the title of “interim coach,” though, and new AD Steve Pedersen was determined to put his own stamp on the program. Coaches around the country saw how Pedersen treated one of NU’s own and shunned the Huskers like hygiene at a Phish concert. It took Pedersen 40 days to come up with Bill Callahan to lead the program, after being told “go fuck yourself” by the likes of Dave Wannstedt, Houston Nutt, Mike Zimmer and (allegedly) Steve Spurrier. Calladouche Blake’d the Nebraska football program, notching the program’s first two losing seasons in 45 years and letting Kansas Hot Karl every black shirt in the stadium.

We're not amused, Bill.

Osborne, who told Pedersen to pack his shit and leave, dumped Callafran in 2007 and called Baton Rouge to see if Pelini, then the DC at LSU, would come back. He did and Nebraska fans have to be ecstatic. In his first season, the Stoops family’s anger management-challenged cousin grabbed nine wins and a bowl win. Aside from being curbed by his buddy Bob in Norman, the Huskers were more inspired in 2008 and fans can finally have something to look forward to in 2009.

Callafran wasn't out of work for long.

Many, including us, are picking Nebraska to win the Big 12 North (although there’s dissension even amongst us TaWers). The fact the Huskers are even in that discussion, though, is primarily Pelini’s work. He’ll have a tough chore trying to put together an offense that lost the prolific Joe Ganz and its top two receiving threats. However, Pelini’s defense, which is his strong suit, could be very good this year. Defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh is a preseason All-American and the Husker secondary is one of the best in the Big 12.

Are the Huskers “back?” No, and they won’t be even if Pelini gets them another 10 wins. They’re on much better footing these days, though, and they’d be well-served to make sure Bo stays in Lincoln for awhile.

Bo Pelini’s defense is a big reason why many, including us, are picking Nebraska to come out of the Big 12 North and represent in the Big 12 conference championship game. The Huskers return seven starters on a unit that played well at times last year, but seemed like they could use some more experience.

In researching the Blackshirts, we took one for the team and put up with watching this:

That’s three minutes of my life I’ll never get back. You, too, I’m sure.

What it did, though, was put some faces with the names. The Husker defense will be counted on to carry the team at times this year as they try to break in a new quarterback and find somebody on offense to catch the ball besides TE Mike McNeill.

Defensive line

The entire Husker defense is built around Ndamukong Suh, the hulking, first-team All Big 12 tackle who led the team in tackles (76), sacks (7.5) and tackles for loss (19). Hell, he even scored three touchdowns last year, two off interception returns, and a third that Kansas would rather forget:

The Sporting News already thinks Suh will be the number one pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, which would be fine with me. It would keep Sam out of Detroit.

Elsewhere on the DL, 6′5″, 265 junior Pierre Allen (5 sacks, 10 tackles for loss) returns next to Suh. The Huskers are a little thin otherwise, though. Sophomore Jared Crick (6′6″, 285), who logged just two tackles in nine games of action last year, will line up at DT next to Suh while senior Barry Turner, who only played in two games last year before breaking his leg and receiving a medical waiver for a 5th season, will play at the other DE in the 4-3. Depth will be a major issue on the defensive line as the two-deep shows a sophomore and three redshirt freshmen backing up the starters.

Linebacker

Jenks native and senior Phillip Dillard is the most experienced returning linebacker Pelini has, which should be a major concern. Dillard was plagued with injuries the entire season in 2008 and was listed second on the depth chart coming out of spring practice. Dillard was able to log just 38 tackles in nine games (five starts) in 2008, spending more time on the sidelines than waiting to get Suh’s sloppy seconds. The rest of the linebacking corps should probably still be cruising the Sonic and skipping 5th period as there are four redshirt freshmen and a sophomore listed among the two deep.

A smallish redshirt freshman, Will Compton (6′2″, 220), is listed as the mike LB. If Dillard returns to form, he’ll play in front of Compton. Fellow second-year frosh Sean Fisher (6′6″, 230) appears to have the edge at the Sam LB slot while sophomore Matthew May (6′1″, 210), the only currently-listed starter with game experience (appeared in six games, recorded six tackles and a sack), is penciled in on the weakside.

Secondary

Where the linebacking corps is young, the guys behind them are just as experienced. Pelini’s pass defense should be its strong suit this year with a secondary led by strong safety Larry Asante. The 6′1″, 215 senior is a three-year starter for the Huskers and was second on the team last year in tackles (67). Two other starters return for Pelini in senior free safety Matt O’Hanlon (5′11″, 200) and junior corner Anthony West (6′0″, 205). Those two combined for 81 tackles, three interceptions and 13 pass breakups in 2008. Senior Rickey Thenarse (24 tackles, 6 TFL) backs up O’Hanlon. At the other corner, junior Prince Amukamara (6′1″, 200) started three games last year, while appearing in all 13.

Special teams

Junior wideout Niles Paul was a dynamic kick returner last year, averaging almost 25 yards per return with one 85-yarder for a touchdown. He’ll also be called upon to return punts with Nate Swift gone due to graduation.

Kicking

Junior Alex Henery was named second-team All Big 12 last year after going 18-of-21 field goals and 56-of-57 extra points for the season. Henery notched 110 points on the season, the highest total for a Husker since 2001 (without knowing who that was, I can hazard a guess). He has a strong and accurate leg, going 6-6 from between 40-49 yards and set a school record with a 57-yarder to beat Colorado. That should serve the Huskers well if they struggle early on offense.

The punting duties will be handled by the winner of a battle royale between Henery, redshirt freshman Brett Maher (he averaged 41.2 yards per boot in high school) and sophomore Jon Damkroger.

After viewing the great facilities at the American Legion Club, this is going to be a great show and we can accommodate all those crazy Husker fans in Columbus. Don’t miss the opportunity to get autographs from Nate Swift, the “All Time Career Reception Leader” for the Huskers. Wait until you see his “Swift-ly Done” poster that will be for sale at the event. The poster is the actual catch that broke the reception record. Here’s a great chance to get a “One-Of-A-Kind” poster and have Nate autograph it personally for you!

Also in attendance are Huskers Todd Peterson, Tyler Wortman, T.J. O’Leary and Cody Glenn. This is a great group of Huskers to meet as there are members of the Blackshirts and two great receivers. T.J. O’Leary was a standout Special Teams player and snapped the ball to Alex Henry for the field goal in the Home game this year against Colorado. Don’t miss this opportunity to capture a piece of history in Columbus, NE from 2:00pm – 3:30pm at the American Legion Club. Come early as we have had large lines at other Always A Husker Tour stops!

Husker memorabilia will also be for sale during the event as well as great action photographs of each player at the signing. The majority of the Husker memorabilia for sale is new to the marketplace and is only available at an Always A Husker tour stop.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Having given the Daily Mail a hard time recently with my Fear & Death analysis of its content and my highlighting how at odds it was with its own readership over The Sex Education Show / Sexperience, I’ve decided to take some inspiration from the rotten rag in the form of its political sketchwriter and theatre critic Quentin Letts and his new book Fifty People Who Buggered Up Britain. I haven’t actually read it but I have read a review which got me thinking about my own list – I’ve only just started really and could definitely use some help so feel free to join in. The timeframe is the last 5 decades. I thought I’d also counter Mail miserableness by adding a list of 20 inspirational figures in Britain from those same 50 years who helped counter-balance the malign influences. I’m hoping to have the full 50 (+ 20) in place by the New Year so do chuck some ideas into the pot…

Buggered up Britain:

1 Ashley Cole – stands out as the most unpleasant character in the Premiership and that’s no easy feat

2 Rupert Murdoch – brought vulgar anti-culture and arrogant anti-democracy to the country in equal measure – I vowed many years ago to throw a big party the day he shuffles off his awful coil and you’re all invited

3 Viscount Rothermere, co-founder of the Daily Mail which published his editorial on 15th January 1934 entitled ‘Hurrah for the Blackshirts!’

4 Ian Paisley – spent his whole toxic life saying No!

5 Doctor Richard Beeching – killed our (relatively green) railways

6 Lord MacAlpine – the Tory treasurer who vandalised Battersea Powerstation, ripped its roof off in the service of…

7 Margaret Thatcher – brought so much misery into Britain in such a short time – I’ll leave this one to Elvis Costello:

I saw a newspaper picture from the political campaign
A woman was kissing a child, who was obviously in pain
She spills with compassion, as that young child’s
face in her hands she grips
Can you imagine all that greed and avarice
coming down on that child’s lips?

Well I hope I don’t die too soon
I pray the Lord my soul to save
Oh I’ll be a good boy, I’m trying so hard to behave
Because there’s one thing I know, I’d like to live
long enough to savour
That’s when they finally put you in the ground
I’ll stand on your grave and tramp the dirt down.

When England was the whore of the world
Margaret was her madam
And the future looked as bright and as clear as
the black tarmacadam
Well I hope that she sleeps well at night, isn’t
haunted by every tiny detail
‘Cos when she held that lovely face in her hands
all she thought of was betrayal.

Notice the link to MacAlpine via Tarmacadam. Notice the link to Murdoch via lively celebrations of the passing of a big bugger.

8 Simon Cowell – for spreading the corrosive myth of instant fame

9 Oswald Mosley – married to one of the Mitford whores in Goebbel’s drawing room with Hitler present as one of only 6 guests – nuff said (do we detect a residual anger in my tone? give me another 50 years and I may start getting over the Nazis …but I doubt it)

10 Stock Aitken Waterman – for devaluing music, torturing us with the likes of Rick Astley and Jason Donovan

11 Howard Shipman – undermined trust in GPs and the NHS in a rather extravagant way

12 The Queen Mother – epitomised how anachronistic royalty and aristocracy are, and how unhealthy reverence of royalty can be. [This choice inspired by Adam D's suggestion - House of Windsor]

13 Erno Goldfinger – typifies the brutalist school of architecture [not sure this is exactly the right culprit but the notion, of Practical Psychologist, is spot on]

14 Victoria Beckham – “She succeeded in her desire to be ’more famous than Persil Automatic’ and is as about as interesting as a box of it. I think she has created such a one-dimensional aspiration for the young. Success can now be measured by vacuity and the meaningless.” [Practical Psychologist] Her husband by contrast captures some positive values such as leadership, commitment to a passion/skill-set and rehabilitation.

15 Reggie & Ronnie Kray – for the misguided hero-worship they have subsequently inspired and inspiring Guy Richie innit [courtesy of Practical Psychologist]

16 Steve McClaren – humiliated himself and England simultaneously under that umbrella with his stupid fucking biros and spiral-bound notepads. Saw him once in a hotel in Manchester (with Anthony Lilley) and there was no question who was the centre of the group… not him, but El Tel.

17 Paul Dacre – Mail supremo who reckons (vis-a-vis the Max Mosley case, son of #9 of course) distinguishing between ‘a sick Nazi orgy’ and ‘people having sex in military-style uniform’ is “almost surreally pedantic logic”

18

19

20

21

22

23

24

25

…

Counterbalanced the buggers:

1 David Hockney – picked up where Picasso left off

2 Bob Marley – brought some Jamaican colour to the grey London of 77

3 Joe Strummer – with The Clash helped British musicians discover the honest energy of DIY

4 Tommy Cooper – just makes me laugh (could equally have been Eric Morecambe in this slot)

5 Francis Bacon – one of the two greats of 20th century art (alongside Picasso)

6 Hannah Billig, the Angel of Cable Street – too busy looking after people to collect her MBE (she asked them to post it)

7 John Peel [courtesy of Adam D “…fades in quietly” ]

8 Tony Hart: “We’re sorry we can’t return your pictures” [courtesy of Adam D] what nobler calling than bringing art and inspiration to children

9 Tony Wilson – for bringing together shining talent in a bold, rounded way – Martin Hannett, Pete Saville, Ian Curtis et al – and showing how to champion your hometown

10 James Bond – [courtesy of Practical Psychologist, in his words...] “overcame the stereotype of the sexually repressed Brit who liked a cold shower before having his bare bottom spanked by a tart” – those Pan edition covers certainly captured my young imagination

11 Michael Young – for the Open University and other progressive policy [courtesy of Practical Psychologist and in memory of Naomi Sargant, first Head of Education at Channel 4, appointed by Jeremy Isaacs in a more adventurous, imaginative age]

12 John Betjeman [courtesy of Practical Psychologist, in his words...] “he saw what we were doing to our land and tried to stop it”

13 Joe Orton – for reviving the Comedy of Manners and finding humour in the black stuff

14 Lennon & McCartney – for taking pop music up a gear or three. PP’s view below: “we led the world in something for the first time in a long time”

15 Geoff Hurst – for scoring that goal

16 Jonny Wilkinson – for scoring that try and creating a Perfect Moment

17 Michael Powell & Emeric Pressburger – for bringing Technicolor British Romanticism to the big screen

18 Rabbi Hugo Gryn – for his efforts in uniting the faiths and demonstrating how to survive to do good, a true Mensch

19 Steve Redgrave – for being a model of commitment, plus his work on dyslexia & education

20 Humph (Humphrey Lyttelton) – for combining the quintessence of Englishness with jazz

Bubbling under:

Glenn has been suspended indefinitely for "violating team rules." (Michael Mason-D'Croz)

Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini announced in a statement today that star outside linebacker Cody Glenn will be suspended indefinitely for “violation of team rules.”

In the statement, Pelini said that the coaching staff and players won’t comment any further on the issue to help Glenn’s privacy.

This announcement came as little surprise to me after hearing a report on Sunday about Glenn. I won’t go into details, because it hasn’t been made public and at this point I am speculating. However, on Sunday the Journal Star was tipped off about a criminal investigation that may involve Glenn, and although the paper couldn’t find anything that night, it seems as though this case has something to do with the suspension.

With that in mind, Glenn’s name has not appeared in any city or campus arrest reports, and thus any talk would be — as I already said — “speculation.”

Pelini said that he will not pull a redshirt at this juncture on any player to replace Glenn on the roster. Instead, defensive coordinator Carl Pelini mentioned Blake Lawrence — who saw quite a few snaps against Kansas — LaTravis Washington and Thomas Grove as possible replacements against Kansas State.

So far this season, Glenn is third on the team in tackles with 51 — despite missing the Texas Tech game. He has six tackles for loss, four pass breakups and four quarterback hurries.

Blackshirts sited
After dominating Kansas at the line of scrimmage on Saturday, it seems that the physicality needed to earn a Blackshirt has been met.

Today at practice Blackshirts were handed out to 11 players — five defensive linemen, two linebackers and four defensive backs.

The linemen were Zach Potter, Ndamukong Suh, Ty Steinkuhler, Pierre Allen and Clayton Sievers.

The linebackers included Tyler Wortman and Phillip Dillard — Glenn wasn’t included because of his suspension.

The defensive backs were Eric Hagg, Anthony West, Armando Murillo and Larry Asante — notably left off the list here would be Prince Amukamara, Matt O’Hanlon and Rickey Thenarse

Suh honored by Big 12
Suh was honored by the Big 12 as this week’s conference defensive player of the week after racking up 12 tackles — four for loss and 2.5 sacks — to go along with a 2-yard TD reception from the “Ducky” formation.

Suh said teammates have taken to calling him “Ducky” because they think he looks like the Ducky the dinosaur character in the old animated Spielberg film “The Land Before Time.” And now when Suh takes the field as a fullback the formation is referred to as “The Ducky Personnel.”

Pelini talked today about Suh’s possibility of going pro.

“Possibly,” Pelini said. “He seems to have ever intention of coming back but that can change.”

When asked about coming back to play his senior year at NU, Suh said: “Yeah, yes I am.”

The Huskers open up their season on Saturday against Western Michigan. Kick off is set for 6 p.m. but there are many things to discuss before that time comes. The first of my daily issues for previewing the Huskers is the defensive side of the ball.

Honestly, there are so many issues with the defense that I could spend all of my pre-season issues on this side of the ball. Questions ranging from who will play at linebacker, or what will the secondary do to how much push can the defensive line create could be covered. However, there are a lot of issues elsewhere that need to be touched as well. So, without further ado we’ll start with the biggest issue … the defense.

Last season the Huskers were historically bad on the defensive side of the ball. They gave up an average of 37.9 points per game, 232.2 rushing yards per game and 476.8 total yards per game. There were many things that can be blamed for this downfall – coaching, effort, talent or scheme – but one thing is certain, you can’t win many games playing defense as poorly as that.

There is good news for the Huskers and Husker fans here on the horizon – you can’t get much worse than ranking 112 out of 119 schools in total defense. However, the main question to ask is how much improvement can you expect out of the 2008 Blackshirts?

With the firing of Head Coach Bill Callahan and most of his staff, and the hiring of defensive minded Bo Pelini there is heightened expectations for the defense. One thing that Husker fans can expect out of a Bo Pelini defense is an attacking defense. Pelini preaches converging on the ball – multiple players tackling the ball-carrier – along with the wrap and attack defense.

What I mean by “wrap and attack” is that Pelini’s defenses are known for creating turnovers. When converging on a ball-carrier, the first player’s job is to wrap-up and try to tackle while subsequent players will try to pry the ball out of the carrier’s hands. The other aspect of “wrap and attack” is that there will be increased blitzes and zone coverages – in hopes of forcing a quarterback into throwing the ball before he’s ready and having the secondary in position to make a play on the ball.

In seasons past the Husker secondary has been asked to play the receiver more than to play the ball, and the reason for that is because cornerbacks were asked to play “on an island” (a.k.a. man-to-man coverage). This season they will play primarily zone coverage, allowing them to play their area and break on the ball instead of reacting to the man they are matched on. The last time this defense was established here in Nebraska the Cornhuskers forced a school record 47 turnovers en route to a 10-3 season.

Now, don’t expect 47 turnovers this season, nor should you expect the Huskers to repeat 2003 in being the third ranked defense nationally – that would be absurd to expect from a defense that has at least five new starters and was 112th last season. However, there is reason to be more confident and to expect some good things from this defense – and they could be somewhere in the 30-50 range nationally.

Honestly, I think that this defense has the potential to be around the top 25 nationally. Call me crazy if you want, but let me tell you why I can envision this.

This season the Huskers return all four starting defensive linemen – who have all slimmed down and focused on speed more than sheer power – they return their most consistent cornerback – sure Zac Bowman was the most talented but Senior Armando Murillo was far and away the most consistent – and a team leader in Junior safety Larry Asante. These returners will be key to the defense’s turnaround, and the Huskers will need them to be consistently good. However, they are not alone out there.

This season we’ll see Junior Phillip Dillard be a true starter for the first time, and the coaching staff has called the secondary one of the most talented they have ever seen. And it is true, talent-wise the Huskers have a stable full of young cornerback and safety prospects. Currently it looks as though Murillo will have Sophomore Anthony West as his starting cornerback partner while Asantewill pair up with Junior Rickey Thenarse. Behind that pair will be a host of young talented players – such as Sophomore cornerbacks Prince Amukamara and Eric Hagg, and Junior safety Major Culbert (who has played linebacker, running back and safety in his three years here).

The defensive line should be the strength of the defense with Seniors Barry Turner and Zach Potter returning at defensive end and Senior Ty Steinkuhler and Junior Ndamukong Suh at defensive tackle. These guys have plenty of experience and should be able to get to the quarterback a lot more than last season – creating pressure to help out the less experienced linebackers and secondary.

However, here is where we hit the major concerns for the Blackshirts, depth for DT and the linebacking group. At DT the Huskers will rely on Shukree Barfield at both nose guard and the gap position as the only experienced player. After Barfield will be a couple of redshirt freshmen in Jared Crick and Terrence Moore. There will be pressure on these young players to continue the level of play that the starters play at.

The biggest concern is obviously the linebackers, who lost all three starters from last season. However, the story doesn’t end there as Callahan was completely unsuccessful in recruiting linebackers during his tenure here - leaving the cupboards bare when he left. Phillip Dillard is the only player in the group who has started a game at linebacker, and the biggest spring/fall camp story this season was Cody Glenn moving from running back to the WILL linebacker spot. At the BUCK linebacker position we’ll see Tyler Wortman - a walk-on who was awarded a scholarship.

Behind those three starters will be a sophomore in Blake Lawrence and three freshmen in Will Compton, Colton Koehler and Sean Fisher. These guys are talented and have the potential to become great, however they are untested and, with the exception of Lawrence, I’m not sure they are ready to play yet. But with the depth in the state that it is right now, they must learn on the fly.

Now, I’ve basically avoided this so far, but I have to talk about Cody Glenn. Glenn moved from running back to linebacker at the beginning of Spring Camp and instantly became the starter at WILL backer. There is a question there, what kind of depth did we have if he moves from offense and gets to the number one spot? Or is it that he is just that good? Perhaps a combination of the two? Well I’m going to go with that last option. Glenn has the physical tools to be a great outside linebacker – speed, power, intelligence and motivation – and has, by all accounts, been working very hard to improve.

Glenn is not taking anything for granted and I believe this is the reason he will be a success at the WILL spot. The real question I have about him isn’t whether he can tackle or hit hard enough, it’s how will he do in coverage? I think that he’ll turn out just fine. But don’t trust just me … Linebackers coach Mike Ekeler has sung Glenn’s praises after spring ball:

“I said, ‘Hey, Cody, chances are that you can go back to Rusk and kick your feet up on the couch, and come back in two-a-days and we’ll roll a ball out there and you’ll probably be the best WILL linebacker we’ve got,’” Ekeler said. “I said, ‘If that’s what you want, then go home and do that.’ But I told him his focus ought to be on being the best WILL linebacker in the United States.”

Glenn has taken those words to heart and appears primed for a big season. Which is something that the Huskers need to be successful. Yes, there are many questions that need to be answered this season, but only time will tell if the Blackshirts can answer them. I personally think a 25th ranking in total defense isn’t out of line seeing the talent we have and the aggressive style of defense Pelini preaches, but like I said earlier … you can call me crazy.

THIS IS ONLY DAY FOUR!"

Slow day for Husker news? Why, yes… yes, it is.

From the Lincoln Journal Star’s A Life in the Red blog…

With Day 4 of fall camp in the books, Husker head coach Bo Pelini seemed pleased at the pace of his team’s progress with the opener just more than three weeks away.

“I like the attitude and the work,” Pelini said after his team worked out Thursday on the grass in half pads.

“Obviously, you get a couple days in, you hope that guys aren’t feeling sorry for themselves. I’m sure they are a little bit, but they don’t show it out on the field. They’re running, they’re hustling. I like where they are right now.”

Nothing earthshaking, really. Boilerplate stuff when you get down to it. But from all the reports we are hearing from Lincoln, it sounds like things are gelling quite nicely. All I’m hoping for is a defense what is able to, y’know, TACKLE people.

That would be SUPER!

In news isn’t Husker related per se, but still Big XII…

Despite an unimpressive record through two seasons, Kansas State coach Ron Prince signed a new, five-year contract on Thursday afternoon.

The Kansas City Star reports that the contract is good through the 2012 season. The salary figures were not immediately made public.

Well, now, that is good news… if you’re not a K-State fan.

Sure, Texas fans will talk-up the mad coaching skills of Prince but that still doesn’t explain how the Huskers absolutely pimp-slapped the Wildcats last year.

And no, I’m still not bitter about how Prince snatched Freeman from Nebraska back in ‘05.

Mostly.

…

Whatever.

The thing is, I just don’t see why K-State’s Powers-that-be think Prince is all that and a bag of chips. I guess it’s gonna take more season of mediocity for K-State fans to wake-up and smell the suck.

Prediction: when the Ron Prince era comes to its ignominious (look that word up, K-State fans!) end and IF Nebraska really turns it around in the next few years, Kansas State will come sniffing around for Coach Mike Ekeler to take over their program.

What Pelini was to Pete Carrol is what Ekeler is to Pelini. Trust me on this, kids: Ekeler is gonna be the next big assistant that everyone is going to be whispering about when a head coaching job comes down the pike. Besides, Ekeler is K-State alumni and a former team captain.

But that’s all cart before the horse stuff. Time will tell.

Back to Prince. The article mentioned that he’s one of the lowest paid HC’s in the Big XII. But they didn’t point-out Coach Prince’s unlimited access to power towels.

It sucks to be you K-State. I’m just sayin’.
