Blacksite Area 51

There was certainly an effort here to make a great game that also says something (about the military, prejudice and other things) but the contemporary commentary feel rather bolted on, like zits on the face of the game. Technically, the game is generally fine but does suffer from more bugs the further on you get. Graphics have that slightly unsatisfactory Unreal Engine 3 look that almost all third-party games seem to have (and a lot of the characters have a light bleed halo around their extremities) while the sound effects lack any punch and have little, well, effect. However, the game controls well, the team command is a welcome touch, the story is good enough, the enemies are pretty cool to look at, the bosses are fine (the huge tentacle monster on the bridge is spectacular though the final boss is bullet-sponge poor), cover destruction works well and the levels are clearly designed so that you don’t get lost. However, it’s never quite as good as it nearly is; there is just that last little bit of atmosphere missing that would take BlackSite from solid to really good.

This game contains mild swear words and gun violence, melee violence.

I played through the second of my four-game descent into $10 gaming territory the other day, with Blacksite: Area 51. This Midway game had pretty high expectations but fizzled when it came out in late ‘07, especially when compared to its contemporaries Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4. It is a mix of Army FPS shooter and alien-invasion/infection gameplay, so it’s not necessarily treading new ground or anything.

Surprisingly, some moments in Blacksite are spot-on – I thought the driving parts were tight and responsive (and not overly long), the mounted-gun sequences (especially on the helicopter) were fun and cinematic, and the game’s default assault rifle feels quickly becomes your best friend with its accuracy and overall powerful feel. The story is derivative (well, what parts of the story I could make out – there is no subtitle option, which irks me a bit) but passable.

Of course, the game isn’t without faults, it didn’t get universally panned for no good reason. The levels defy logic at times and are ridiculously unoriginal. The enemies are about as diverse as your meat selection at KFC (get it?). The end boss fight is like a bad version of Prey’s end boss fight (well, the first half at least), which wasn’t good itself. It’s a short romp in generic FPS land, probably about 6 hours. You don’t net that many achievement points on one playthrough (and they aren’t stackable), but after you beat the game you can just go to the end of each chapter and beat that last part on each difficulty to get those remaining cheevers. I’m just not sure if I’m up to it. Rent it, or maybe get it if it’s under $10.

Score: 62/100

I know you’ve been chomping at the bit, waiting to find out which game I’m playing next. So, I’m here to go on record that BlackSite: Area 51 has already been graced by my presence for a few minutes today. It feels pretty solid, maybe even solider than I expected. More to come!

Game Notes
~~~~~~~~~~
Cum nu in fiecare zi e sambata, la fel de bine, nu fiecare shooter aparut pe piata e stralucit. Blacksite: Area 51 te pune in pielea unui soldat american care, ajutat de alti doi compatrioti si frati de arme, trebuie sa opreasca o invazie extraterestra. Povestea se imbina cu intrigi de ordin militar, putin tactic si… cam atat. Nu este un storyline rau, chiar e foarte bine pus la punct, dar jocul nu prea sustine povestea. Prea multe arme nu-ti sunt puse la dispozitie, iar liniaritatea jocului este enervanta. Grafica este ok, nu te lasa cu gura cascata, dar nici nu te face sa strambi din nas. Partea de gameplay pare facuta si gandita in graba de baietii de la Midway. Au incercat sa-ti dea un feeling realist atunci cand te plimbi cu pusca-n mana si cand tragi, dar pare cam exagerat avand in vedere tematica jocului. In cateva ore termini campania fara probleme si cu siguranta nu o sa mai revi sa-l joci. Nu este un joc pe care merita sa dai banii. Daca ai chef sa impusti extraterestrii si cativa talibani, atunci ai torrentul asta la dispozitie.
Un joc de nota 6.5/10  Review by Kruger.
Rating: 6.5 Out of 10 BlackSite: Area 51 is a first person shooter that uses some squad based comman
Rating: 6.5 Out of 10
BlackSite: Area 51 is a first person shooter that uses some squad based commands. This game has some good looking characters and some cool environments, but unfortunately, that is the only thing that it has going for it. The game has a lot of bugs and glitches that add up over time, the squad tactics never seem to work out the way you want them to, and you can never seem to get a full 10 player match online. Overall, this is an ordinary first person shooter, and it is definitely a rental.
Pros:
+ Good-looking characters and environments
+ Campaign is of a decent length
Cons:
- Squad tactics never seem to work out quite as well as you want them to
- Lots of little bugs and issues that add up over time
- It’ll be tough to find enough players online to get into a full 10-player game
Listen.  I know that Microsoft charges $50/year for their Xbox Live Gold membership, allowing you access to their robust online system.  But did you know that every new Xbox 360 comes with a free Silver membership, which allows you to interact with friends (just not in games) and access to the Xbox Live Marketplace (XBLM), where you can download media for free?
What I’m getting at are the free demos you can download in XBLM.  Currently, there are 158 to choose from.  Here are my six favorite, in alphabetical order.  Keep in mind that these are my favorite demos available, and are not reflections on the final games themselves:
Battlefield: Bad Company
The newest game on this list, I was pretty impressed with the single player demo.  Mark was raving about the multiplayer demo (yes, they are in the same demo) and I tried it out.  It has so much going on that I feel like I should be paying for all this.  But by far my favorite thing about this demo, what makes it included on this list, is the fact that whatever upgrades and rank you earn in this demo will get transferred over to the full game if and when you choose to buy it.  Pretty neat.
—
Bioshock
Many of last year’s best games didn’t have demos come out at all.  I went away for a road trip last year and was Xbox-less for about a month, and the first thing I did when I came home was kiss my wife hello.  And then I downloaded this demo, just to make sure that I definitely was going to go out and buy it.  This demo is pretty much the unaltered beginning of the game, and that’s not a bad thing.  Actually, its a very good thing.
—
Blacksite: Area 51
This is the one game on the list that I would tell you to play the demo but advise you against buying the actual game.  The demo is short and sweet, and ends on a great cliffhanger.  I haven’t played the full game, but it got 6’s across the board, whereas this demo is a solid 8.
—
Call of Duty 2
This is the same demo seen in those Xbox 360 kiosks all over the place a couple years ago.  When it was hooked up to an HDTV, my jaw would drop – and though that doesn’t happen today, it’s still a fun, intense, and self-contained little demo.
—
Crackdown
The best part about this game is when your character levels up and acquires new abilities – and this demo accelerates that element to give players a good idea of what the full game is about.  It’s a brilliant move, to show players a demo that’s actually MORE rewarding than the actual game.  And this demo is HUGE, it’s ridiculous that all this content is free (but time-limited).
—
skate.
First off, it takes balls to not capitalize the title of a game.  Secondly, presenting a demo for this game was probably not a very smart move.  The controls of this game are really difficult to master, but everyone loves them after they’ve got it down.  Problem is, most people aren’t going to put that much effort into a demo – now if they buy the full game, they’re stuck with it, and will eventually get the hang of it.  But I wonder how many people ended up not buying this game because they had a hard time with the demo.  Either way, it’s a solid game, and a breath of fresh air in a stagnant Tony Hawk world.
—
Honorable mention
The Orange Box
The only reason this demo didn’t make it onto the list is because I never played it.  I bought this game the moment it came out, and haven’t had the need for the demo at all.  I have no idea what the demo contains – Half Life, Portal, Team Fortress 2?  Doesn’t really matter – it’s worth it regardless.  If you haven’t bought The Orange Box, go buy it.  If you live in the middle of nowhere and can’t get your hands on a copy (but somehow have high-speed internet), I guess you can download this demo first.
It requires 11 GB to install. Fuck it, this is why I should only game on consoles, because PC games annoy me. It also crashed my computer twice while installing. Back to COD4, I think.
This one keeps jumping around on PS3 fans. A demo was set to hit the PS3 PSN last week but was pulled for some reason. Now we have some more news on a Demo from psu.com. The demo for BlackSite: Area 51 is scheduled to hit the PlayStation Network on Dec. 20. Sadly I think this is the same demo the guys on the Xbo360 got weeks & months ago…
Today, Psyduck wants to spend a few minutes on one of his favorite hobbies: video games. That’
Today, Psyduck wants to spend a few minutes on one of his favorite hobbies: video games. That’s right, when Psyduck is not writing in his Moleskine or eating generous helpings of Collon, he’s focusing his beady Psyduck eyes on the TV and playing teh games.
Of course, when people learn that Psyduck is an avid gamer, the first question is always, “do you play Pokemon?” Yes. Psyduck plays Pokemon, but because he grew up on the set, he doesn’t play it as much anymore. Instead, Psyduck spends most of his time with the new crop of systems like the Xbox 360 and the PS3. Psyduck also enjoys portable games like Harvest Moon for the DS and GTA for the PSP.
Psyduck occasionally fires up the PS2, though as of late it’s been hibernating. Still, Psyduck is considering the PS2 again to try out Odin Sphere. The game has received overwhelming reviews and it would be interesting to step back into the 2d gaming world after spending the past few years in 3d . Psyduck loves awesome graphics, and even though some of the sweetest visuals can found on the current crop of consoles, one can’t discount the beauty that is Odin Sphere. Perhaps Santa Psyduck (no relation) will leave the game in Psyduck’s stockings.
Another game Psyduck is itching to try is Mass Effect. The reviews have been pretty positive on this title, too, so Santa Psyduck might have to pick that up with Odin Sphere. Psyduck doesn’t normally play RPGs, but Mass Effect seems to really push the envelope of what an RPG can do, so curiosity is really getting the best of Psyduck.
Other than that, Psyduck is really looking forward to playing games he already owns but can’t play because his Xbox 360 is following the footsteps of the writers’ strike and is picketing with the Red Ring of Death. Sadly, Psyduck has gone through multiple consoles in recent months, and has been unable to play some of the choice titles of the fall like Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4. Needless to say, Psyduck has very special feelings for Microsoft and the Xbox, but blogging about those feelings will have to wait until Psyduck is finished with his therapy and can write more than five words without swearing. After all, this is a family blog and Psyduck tries to refrain from colorful sailor language.
Xbox Red Ring of Death Return # 452: A game comes in and an Xbox goes out.
Call of Duty 4 is at the top of his list of games to play when the console returns. Master Chief and the world of Halo 3 is a must, too, but there aren’t any knives or dogs in Halo 3. COD4 has both! Don’t ask. Some things are better left unanswered.
With all these great games out, Psyduck wonders why other companies still try to compete during the holiday rush. A game like Blacksite: Area 51 will probably get overlooked by most gamers, but if it was an early fall or early spring release, it would’ve fared better. What are these companies thinking? Psyduck not know.
By the way, what do you guys think about Halo: The Flood? Psyduck has mixed feelings about all this.
The demo for Blacksite: Area 51 was recently released on Xbox Live Marketplace. I finally got a chance to try it today and take a few pictures. For those of you who haven’t tried it but are interested, here are some impressions:
The main menu. Fancy.
Upon firing it up, the title looked pretty sharp and snazzy. The options menu was pretty sparse, but they offered several different control schemes. The default one (typical aiming and walking; X to reload; A to jump; B to melee; the rest I forget) seemed pretty good, so I went with that. Once you decide to play, you get treated to a lovely loading screen:
Aunt Millie takes a walk.
You start off in a typical American suburb, except it’s pretty rainy and a little creepy. Interestingly enough, you have a couple of teammates with you. You can order them around with a press of a button (which button depends on which control scheme you’re using), and it seems pretty intuitive. The controls were very floaty, though. I didn’t feel like my character had a sense of weight at all—same goes for the gun. It’s a little weird for someone who’s been playing tons of Rainbow Six lately, that’s for sure.
Life begins at a gas station.
Your teammates do all the door-opening for you.
After you get accustomed to the controls and look around for a bit, it’s time to get going. Once you go through a couple of doors, you’re treated to a revealing scene (sounds hot, doesn’t it?) wherein the enemies are introduced.
Don’t worry, sir—he’s just here to clean your car windows.
After some yelling and screaming on the part of an NPC, it’s time to exercise your trigger finger as a group of baddies decides to invade the gas station’s kwik-e-mart. Of course, you can always hide behind the counter like a smart commander and let your AI friends do the fighting. Or you can visit the ATM:
Some things are destructible—note the crumbling pillar and the stray money from the ATM.
Kinda looks like those things from Resistance, doesn’t it?
Anyway, once you’ve cleared out the gas station and blown up a few pumps in spectacular Hollywood fashion, you stumble upon some ammo boxes. And let me tell you, folks—these are some of the coolest ammo boxes I’ve ever seen. Why? Well, see for yourself:
Yes, folks—those ARE, in fact, glowsticks.
Once you hang around the ammo boxes and magically refill your bullet stash, it’s time to move on and get assaulted by more nasties.
Distressed over the death of the tentacle monster, Bob proceeded to kneel down and cry.
After those enemies are taken care of, then the really cool stuff begins. You turn the corner by Insurance and Romeo’s Pizza, and lo and behold, something gigantic takes a poop in front of you:
And then everything fades to black. The end.
Yeah, it was a teaser demo after all. I was kind of hoping for more, especially after the giant centipede/christmas tree flies down from the sky, but no go. It was pretty interesting, though the developers definitely have a bit of tuning to do. The framerate tried to commit suicide every time a major firefight happened, which makes you feel like you’re swimming through potatoes instead of fighting aliens. Also, like I mentioned earlier, the controls were pretty weird and floaty, though not terrible. At least they mapped the button actions intuitively–I never really had to think about which button was jump or reload, because they pretty much used the standard (X and A, respectively).
Will I be getting this game when it comes out? Probably not. It’s fun for a spin, but in terms of serious gaming, no. And I’m definitely not willing to spend $60 on it, though I expect fans of the first game will be pleased.
Anyway, demo’s out on Marketplace. Give it a try if you can.
