How can you not love this track? It’s “History” off Mos Def’s The Ecstatic performed with Amber Coffman and Haley Dekle of Dirty Projectors and The Roots on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Blackstar, the best duo in Hip Hop history? Just hit the jump and check out the video.

This = a live performance that I actually got excited to watch beforehand. These two geniuses need no introduction.

These Sexy Men Boots are from Capelta’s 2009 Fall Collection. The line was stared in 2006 by Monique Capelta, a former actress and fitness model. Monique got the inspiration to start her line after moving to Manhattan from Troy, North Carolina in 2002 and became discouraged by the monotony of shoe fashion at the time. Moving back to Los Angeles to star in a feature film she was complimented on her shoe fashion sense by her friends and afterwards knew she was on to something. Ecademy’s membership numbers have been a point of contention for many years.  Contradicting what comes out of head office — or at least questioning it — has cost several members their access to the site.  So it’s always exciting when new figures come out that you probably wouldn’t question because they actually make worrying reading.

And so this happened with an e-mail I got this morning about a BlackStar upgrade event:

It reveals that 67 new members were added to Ecademy’s top tier BlackStar level during October.  This coincides with a drop in the membership fee from £140 to £40.

On its own it doesn’t do much to settle the long running dispute on total number of profiles vs. total of active members vs. monthly pageviews. Nor does it help us work out what the total number of paying members is (estimated at about 6,000, of which 600 are BlaclStars).

But it does say that 67 NEW BlackStars is something they feel is worth making a fuss about, as these are top paying members they otherwise wouldn’t have had.

Let’s do some maths…

67 new members at £40 each monthly gives Ecademy £2,680 they arguably wouldn’t otherwise have had.  But then it only takes 27 existing BlackStars to start paying at the new rate — £100 LESS than they were paying and something I am assuming they willbe entitled do — to wipe out the additional income.

Of course, it could be that existing BlackStars don’t get access to the new fee.  In which case, only 20 of  them leaving in protest wipes out the income from the additional 67 members upgrading.

This doesn’t sound like it’s brought Ecademy any real benefit, other than being able to quote more BlackStar members.  Am I missing something?

There’s a lot I could say about Mos Def – still one of the most highly respected MCs in the game, with intelligent lyrics matched by an incomparable delivery style. Ever since his break-out with Talib Kweli in super-duo, Blackstar, Mos Def has gone from strength to strength, featured on everything from joints by The Roots to Kanye West, as well as pushing on with his solo career, both in music and acting. To get to the point, here’s a special episode of Embedded, put together by the good people at Current Music TV, following Mos Def on a seven-day tour of Japan to promote his new album, ‘The Ecstatic.’ Not only do we get to see some great performances, but we once again see the MC’s love for fashion and pushing the boundaries of what you can get away with in hip-hop. I also just realised the woman at the beginning pretty much sums up everything I just said within twenty seconds… Enjoy!

Hey Folks!!!

So lets get it crackin this week shall we!? The Old Soul in a Young Man track for the week is brought to you by a group named Black Star from their self titled album Black Star which was released in 1998 shortly following the deaths of hip hop greats Tupac & Notorious B.I.G. Black Star is made up of emcees Mos Def and Talib Kweli. I decided to bring this song, “Brown Skin Lady” to light today in combat to all of the music people unfamiliar with the genre of Real Hip-Hop. In contrast to the demeaning, rude, and out right disgusting songs that talk about women as objects this song exemplifies what its really like to admire a woman and try to pick up on her. It exemplifies manners which the current generation seems to either have lost or disregarded in order to make money.

To start,  the track features a movie sample of a conversation from an independent film entitled Chameleon Street. This movie was created in 1989 and told the story of a social chamelon that impersonates reporters, doctors, and lawyers, to make money. It was critiqued as one of the first films to ,”examine how mellifluously race, class, and role-playing morph into the social fabric of America” by Sundance Festival.  This conversational sample plays out as follows,”I’m a victim brother. I’m a victim of 400 years of conditioning. The man has programmed my conditioning. Even my conditioning has been conditioned!”

The song continues on with Mos Def and Talib approaching respective girls in a more polite fashion out of infatuation and fascination of each woman’s being. It is often noted that this song was created in effort to promote the appreciation of black women who are statistically the lowest likely to marry or stay in marriage. Black women are often depicted in a stereotype that adheres to rude, ignorant, loud, uncivilized behavior and are often seen as sexual items rather than human beings. Each emcee celebrates their respective target females with many uplifting praises noting that the the stereotype often depicted is false.

We should file this article under “Competitor Watch”… We learned this week that Ecademy’s top flight BlackStar membership has just been slashed in price from £140 a month to just under £40.  What’s happening?

It’s a move that bucks a well established trend.  BlackStar membership has always been sacred on Ecademy, with Life Membership costing nearly £9,000 and a fairly regular inflation busting hike a regular feature on the Ecademy calendar.  But as WeCanDo.BIZ increases the annual cost of Pro Networker (although making it possible to now subscribe a month at a time), so Ecademy has surprised everyone by slashing the price of BlackStar by over 70%!  Why?

I’ll be speaking with Thomas Power, chairman of Ecademy, next week so will be able to ask the question then, but the messages on the Ecademy website supporting the move suggest a desire to substantially grow their current base of top tier BlackStars from the estimated 600 – 700 members of today.

But is Ecademy likely to see the four fold increase it needs to achieve that objective without impacting revenues?  Even if it does, does it makes sense with the decrease in margin that is inevitable when processing four times the number of membership applications?

Anja Assmuth (drums) spielte ebenfalls bereits auf großen Festivals (Rock am Ring, With Full Force u.a.) und stand mit Angel Dust und Doro Pesch auf den Bühnen der Welt. In die Schlagzeugschule ging sie bei einem der besten Metal Drummer Mike Terrana.

Geocaching is an outdoor activity in which the participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers (called “geocaches” or “caches”) anywhere in the world. A typical cache is a small waterproof container (usually a tupperware or ammo box) containing a logbook. Larger containers can also contain items for trading, usually toys or trinkets of little value. Geocaching is most often described as a “game of high-tech hide and seek”, sharing many aspects with orienteering, treasure-hunting, and waymarking.

My son has a knack of stumbling upon geocaches while out hiking in the woods. Last weekend we decided to finally go geocaching the proper way. We had an incredible time and will no doubt do it again this weekend.

First you will need either a GPS receiver or ability to turn your cell phone into a GPS receiver.  Many local outdoor stores sell GPS receivers and there are applications you can download directly to your cell phone such as Trimble Outdoors (~$5.99/mo). On the Trimble website you will see a few different applications. Find the one that serves your cell phone provider.  All the applications will show GPS coordinates.

If you are tech savvy you may be able to find a free way to turn your phone into a GPS receiver. I did a quick google search for an application that would turn my cell phone into a GPS unit. BlackStar provides an application you can download to your Blackberry Storm that enables it to show GPS coordinates. A simple Google search for “use my _____ cell phone to geocache” should yield results to help get you started.

The Roanoke County Parks & Recreation Department is hosting a geocaching clinic on October 3.

www.geocaching.com is the most popular site for finding caches that are already hidden in your area. A quick search for Roanoke yields over 350 caches, many of which are surprisingly hidden downtown:
