Our favorite bit from the lavish, no-expenses-spared, “night at Versailles” styled state

Our favorite bit from the lavish, no-expenses-spared, “night at Versailles” styled state dinner last night was word that reporters actually questioned why some of the “luminaries” were there, at taxpayer expense, wining and dining at an event when the White House claims it can’t afford to put on a traditional Hannakkah celebration.

Alfre Woodard, who was not, as some believe, either one of the reporters talking to Deep Throat about Nixon or that puppet that ate cats on NBC twenty years ago, was asked why she, randomly, was invited to the state dinner: “I don’t know why I’m here” was the best she could offer. When pressed if she knew what connection she had to India that required her attendance, she said, “I know where India is. I’ve heard of it. I’ve had Indian food before, too, and it was good, mostly”.

Blair Underwood, who was not, as some believe, either an American Idol winner or the character played by Lisa Welchel on Facts of Life, was also asked why he was invited to the state dinner. “Uh, because Alfre Woodard was, I guess. I don’t know why I’m here either.”

Chicago native Jennifer Hudson was one of the entertainers last night, which we heartily approve of, because Hudson is a wonderful, wonderful young woman. Randomly, a year or so ago, before she won the Oscar, we ran into her at a restaurant near the Southside where a friend we were with knew her personally and got the chance to talk to her for a bit — she is every bit as nice and friendly as you would imagine, so we’re glad she got a chance to go to the White House and sing there. She is a good ambassador for the City of Chicago, so it makes sense for the Chicago president to invite her to entertain him. Kudos to her.

But, Alfre Woodard and Blair Underwood? If the guest list needed random black actors, why not Forrest Whitacker and Angela Bassett? Has Underwood done anything relevant since L.A. Law? And Woodard stunk up Wisteria Lane on Desperate Housewives a few seasons back. Too bad Lynne Thigpen is dead, because she would have been a great, random state dinner guest — maybe she would have come dressed as “The Chief” from her Carmen Sandiego days, and could have told the other guests about India, since that was a show about geography and many of the Hollywood luminaries barely have high school educations so they might have benefitted from that.

What other random people should the White House have invited with no connection whatsoever to India besides having heard of it, maybe, and having eaten Indian food a few times in the past?

Who would you have invited?

The invitation list was a veritable who’s-who of South Asian A-listers, including Deepak Chopra, Bobby Jindal, Kalpen Modi, Sanjay Gupta, Jhumpa Lahiri, Amartya Sen, Fareed Zakaria, and M Night Shyamalan. Other guests included Colin Powell, Katie Couric, Steven Spielberg, Alfre Woodard, and Blair Underwood. In addition to Jennifer Hudson’s vocal stylings, AR Rahman, Oscar winner for the “Slumdog Millionaire” score, also provided entertainment.

I’ve not written about In Treatment since the first week, so it’s time I wrote a catch u

I’ve not written about In Treatment since the first week, so it’s time I wrote a catch up post. I was inspired to do this when I left a 400 word comment on Unpopcult’s review of week 5 and I thought it would be a waste not to try and turn it in to a post.

In Treatment is a 5-nights-a week, HBO drama currently airing in the UK on Sky Arts 1. The most recent complete week that I’ve seen was Week 5, so that’s what I’m going to concentrate on. The series centres around therapist Dr Paul Weston (Gabriel Byrne) and his relations with his clients. Each night of the week features a different patient.

To begin with, each plot strand seemed to be unrelated, but, as time has gone on, they have slowly become entwined. Considering that it mainly consists of some people talking in a room it’s an incredibly gripping, and, at times, exciting series.

With so many episodes, the quality inevitably varies, although they maintain an overall high standard. The emphasis in each strand shifts, week by week, in order to tell a long novelistic story and, quite often, last week’s strongest strand becomes the weakest, and vice versa.

Monday – Laura (Melissa George)

Laura has become the central focus to the series. It started with her confessing her love for Paul (known as erotic transference in the trade), but, as the weeks passed, we also learned Paul is actually in love with her too. It’s not entirely clear why Paul is in love with Laura – sure, she’s 25 years his junior, gorgeous and keeps telling him how much she wants to have sex with him – but doesn’t Paul want more than that? Facetiousness aside, they’ve not made the reasons clear why Paul has completely lost his head over her. There are some clues, such as the disintegration of his marriage, but, so far, Laura hasn’t proved to be that lovable. In his own therapy session, the previous week, Paul did say how intelligent, funny, good story-teller etc etc that Laura was, but that hasn’t really come across in the sessions that we’ve seen with her. The series is incredibly layered and subtle, so I’m sure that my concerns will be addressed before too long.

Tuesday – Alex (Blair Underwood)

Alex started as a bullish fighter-pilot struggling to deal with having killed civilians, but, with the on-set of an affair with Laura, the strand has taken on a darker edge. This week’s episode was very powerful as Alex pushed Paul to breaking point by revealing that he had been spying on him and divulging details of his wife’s affair. I did find it all kind of strange though (perhaps it was supposed to seem that way). Alex was definitely very creepy, and seemed almost possessed, but part of me just didn’t believe that he would really have dug up all that information. I’m hoping that this week will shine a bit more light on it all.

Wednesday – Sophie (Mia Wasikowska)

Sophie’s strand seems to be the least connected to the others, but it is no worse for that. I do wonder if her story will eventually link to all the others or if it will continue to be stand-alone. Either way, Mia Wasikowska is exceptional in the role and her rapport with Gabriel Byrne is a joy to behold. I guess what it brings to the overall picture is that it shows Paul at his most caring when he can at other times seem a bit cold.

Thursday – Jake and Amy (Josh Charles & Embeth Davidtz)

Thursdays have always felt a little bit like filler on In Treatment and Jake & Amy, a husband and wife undergoing couples therapy, have never quite rung true. Like Sophie their story isn’t tied directly to the overall plot, but you can draw parallels between their marriage and Paul’s own troubled one. The plot really picked up this week and, in something of a reversal, we saw Amy become very unemotional while Jake showed his true desperation to save their marriage. It was actually very moving and they both finally seemed like real people.

Friday – Gina (Dianne Wiest)

Friday’s episodes are especially fascinating as Paul visits his own therapist Gina. Their relationship is quite complicated and there is past bad blood between them. This means that there is so much smoke and mirrors in their conversations that it’s difficult to know exactly what they are really saying to each other. We see first hand that Paul blatantly lies when recounting some events and so it brings in to question everything that is said by every character in the series.

This week they were joined by Kate, Paul’s wife, who has recently admitted to having an affair. Despite stating that they were already blurring the lines of acceptable behaviour for therapy, Gina brought up Laura and made Paul explain the situation. Did she do this as a good piece of therapy or in order to get one over on Paul? The other big theme in this episode was the comparison between Kate’s physical betrayal and Paul’s emotional one. Kate was allowed to be very indignant about Paul’s feelings for Laura, but it’s hard to feel too sorry for her considering she’s just come back from a holiday with another man. I felt that, to an extent, they were allowing Kate to take the moral high ground and it didn’t really wash with me. Everything seems to have fallen apart for Paul and I’m intrigued to see where the series goes next.

In Treatment is the rarest of beasts – a complex, adult drama serial. My only criticism is that having five episodes every week is forcing me to be very creative when managing my Sky planner.

An interesting week at O2 media. This week we had some celebrities in our studios. We shot a piece that included the movie/TV star Blair Underwood. We are producing a segment on our daily show focusing on all Natural alternatives to sugar. The company that has created this amazing innovation brought down Blair to speak on the subject. I found him to be a very down to earth individual and he brought his son with him as well and he was a very respectful and polite young fellow. I love when we see celebrities stand up for a cause. We have such a challenge in America with obesity and obesity related diseases such as Diabetes which now affect both children and adults. We need to get the message out that there are healthy alternatives in the foods and condiments we eat that both taste great and provide multiple health benefits. Its solutions like these that inspire me to come to work each day.

A couple of weeks ago I came to the staggering revelation that I am 30 years old born and living in

A couple of weeks ago I came to the staggering revelation that I am 30 years old born and living in the UK and I have never been to London. Well that isn’t entirely true, I did go (apparently) when I was child which I can’t remember and I have been there a couple of times on business but I’ve normally just made a few underground changes and then gone straight to the meetings. So I made the decision that when I take some time off I’m going to head down to the ‘big smoke’ and do the touristy thing.

So last Monday off we went umbrella in hand and ready to see the sights. I started off with the Anish Kapoor exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts and moved onto the usual suspects, Trafalgar square, Westminster, Tate Modern, London Eye and then headed to Buckingham Palace.

We took a few pictures of the guards, the palace, the gates, surrounding statues and fountains when all of a sudden I hear some teenage girls screaming and turn around to be confronted by Blair Underwood stood about 5ft away. I remember Blair from LA Law so I can only imagine the girls were screaming because of his more recent role as Dr Robert Leeds in ‘Sex in the City’ - showing my age now.

Being the consummate professional I am, I calmly asked if my girlfriend could have a photo taken with him before asking if I could have one too. I think I would have been a bit more star struck if it wasn’t for the randomness of meeting him. With all that said, it was the highlight of the day and it did dominate the conversation for the next hour.

Blair seemed like a really nice down to earth guy who seemed to take the constant photo requests in his stride. I’m sure he’s used to this kind of attention but it is still admirable considering he probably just wanted to see the sights like any other normal tourist.

So here it is a picture of the day I met Blair Underwood.

For those that are wondering, yes I’m sure Blair is sat at home in his mansion franticly writing in his blog about the day he met Aaron Harvey !

FlashForward: Channel 5 (Recorded 5th Oct Watched 8th Oct) Episode 2 – This week’s epis

FlashForward: Channel 5 (Recorded 5th Oct Watched 8th Oct)

Episode 2 – This week’s episode had a bit of a poor start; some kids played an unconvincing game of ‘blackout’, one of the kids was unconvincingly bullied for not joining in, and then the parents of that kid unconvincingly dealt with the aftermath. Luckily, things picked up a bit, and they had at least the good grace to address early on the fact that our heroes are the self appointed world experts on the ’blackout’, despite working in a FBI sub-office. After last week praising the vigilance of the agent that managed to spot the one person who didn’t black out, this week I’d like to commend the FBI web developers, who knocked up the world’s most complicated web-site in a few hours. And, a special mention must go out to whoever managed to get the authorisation for the ‘millions of dollars’ in funding needed to set it up, as their superior somehow hadn’t noticed that it had been spent. Maybe I’m just being picky.

Like early episodes of Heroes, I think I’m watching for the intriguing set-up and not how the programme is being executed; it may be the clunkiest script I’ve heard for a long time, and their love of hammering a point home by endless repetition of earlier scenes is bordering on OCD. There is also the deeply troubling question of why nobody seems that bothered by it all, and, given we’re in America, where are all the religious fanatics? Now I’m definitely just being picky.

Despite its obvious flaws, it’s still interesting enough to keep me watching. For now.

Emma: BBC HD (R 5th Oct W 8th Oct)

I’m determined that one day I’ll watch one of the BBCs acclaimed costume dramas in it’s entirety and not just give up after 10 minutes of the first episode. That day, however, is not today. Believe it or not, I’ve actually read some Jane Austen novels and quite enjoyed them. I just can’t seem to bear it when they turn up on the telly. Shouldn’t it be the other way around?

It’s Only a Theory: BBC4 (R 7th Oct W 8th Oct)

This is a new series in which highly-qualified experts submit a theory to a panel, which consists of Andy Hamilton, Reginald D. Hunter and a guest (this week, Clare Balding). After some amusing cross-examination, the panel then decide whether or not the theory is approved or rejected. On the face of it, this seems to be exactly the same format as Dave Gorman’s Genius, but with theories instead of inventions. Whilst they are very similar, the big difference is that IOAT is actually quite serious and the theories are genuinely interesting; this week’s were, ‘the first 1000 year old human has already been born’ and ‘we’re in danger of turning sadness in to an sickness’. The appeal of the show is helped by the wit of unlikely duo, Hamilton and Hunter. Yes, it’s another variation on the comedy panel show, but it’s also one where you might actually learn something to go along with your laughs.

In Treatment: Sky Arts 1 (R 5th, 6th & 7th Oct W 8th Oct)

I had mixed feelings going in to this; it’s made by HBO and is highly acclaimed, but I didn’t know if I had the stomach for watching a five nights a week drama about a therapist talking to his clients.

I watched the opening three half-hour episodes back-to-back, and each starred Gabriel Byrne as Dr Paul Weston. The first episode sees Laura (Melissa George) describe the events of events of a drunken night out and ultimately confessing her unrequited love for Weston. The second saw Alex (Blair Underwood), an über-confident fighter pilot, who slowly begins to reveal his inner turmoil over a mission which resulted in the death of children. Episode three was the story of suicidal teen, Sophie (Mia Wasikowska).

Just watching two people have a conversation for half an hour, in a single room, shouldn’t be as interesting as this is. The acting is uniformly superb, but special mention must be made for Byrne who spends much of the show just listening; he goes to show what a skill listening is for an actor. Acting alone doesn’t make a show, and the scripts really shine through. It’s really compelling television and each strand feels like it’s slowly being opened out as we learn more about each of the patients and their therapist. I’m exciting to see where this is going to go over the next 9 weeks, and how the writers are going to sustain the momentum built in these opening episodes. Don’t be put off by the concept, you should definitely watch this.

Stargate Universe: Sky One (R 6th Oct W 8th Oct)

I’ve never followed any of the Stargate franchises and may well not have bothered this time if it wasn’t for the inclusion of Robert Carlyle as its star. I’ve seen bits of other Stargate episodes, but I had no real preconceptions going in to this, so I just tried to sit back and enjoy the ride. I watched the two opening episodes, which are part of a 3 part opener, and it’s pretty good, but feels like we’re still establishing the premise. And the premise is this; some military and scientists, who are part of the Stargate program, escape an enemy attack by taking a one-way ride to an ancient spaceship that is billions of light years away from earth. The current plot is almost entirely concerned with their attempts to get the decrepit life support system working, and when they, presumably, get that working, then I don’t know where it’s going. At the moment it feels like it lies somewhere between Voyager and Battlestar Galactica. Hopefully, they will err towards the latter in terms of plot and quality.

Harry Hill’s TV Burp: ITV1 (R 10th Oct W 10th Oct)

It’s a welcome return for the show the remains the exception to the rule that ITV don’t do comedy. I was worried during the first half that it had lost its touch, but the second half really picked up and was hilarious. It’s perfect Saturday evening entertainment.

Lie To Me: Sky One (R 8th Oct W 10th Oct)

It’s not been that long since the first season finished its run, and this season 2 opener was a welcome return. It’s the story of Dr Cal Lightman (Tim Roth), a ‘human lie-detector’, and his team of related experts. They’re regularly sub-contracted by various US law enforcement agencies to solve their crimes for them.

It’s not the kind of show that I normally like; I generally steer away from police procedurals and there’s no real overall storyline running through the series. Credit to the writers and cast then that they have made essentially an episodic cop show that isn’t completely vacant. A large part of its appeal lies in the casting of Roth who commands every scene in which he takes part; it’s worth watching just for him.

Actor Blair Underwood cut the ribbon Thursday on an HIV/AIDS clinic bearing his name.

AIDS Healthcare Foundation opened the AHF Blair Underwood Clinic on K Street in Northwest D.C.

“It’s not about having your name on a building — it’s very flattering and I am truly honored — but it is about the work that needs to be done,” Underwood says.

He says it’s important because D.C. “has the highest rate of HIV in the nation.”

The actor, who has had great success in movies and on television, is the face of American Healthcare Foundation’s “Man Up” campaign, which encourages everyone to know their HIV status.

Underwood says he wants to go to college campuses and discuss AIDS with men “who are out there dating women and think this doesn’t concern them.”

“It concerns them — we are dying,” he says.

On September 18th, I attended a spectacular revue at the Historic Lincoln Theatre in Washington, D.

On September 18th, I attended a spectacular revue at the Historic Lincoln Theatre in Washington, D.C. called “Before the Harlem Renaissance, There was U Street”. This program, through dance, song, and poetry, celebrated when the U Street corridor in D.C. was known as Black Broadway, a time that predated and fueled the vibrant art and intellectual scene that exploded in Harlem in the 1920’s. This event was one of many that the Lincoln Theatre showcased during the Harlem Renaissance (HR)Festival Celebration that rocked D.C. this past weekend. When I heard about this multi-disciplinary arts tribute taking place, I was ecstatic because the HR is one of my absolute favorite periods in history. I like to fancy that I was actually an eyewitness to those times in some shape or form, perhaps as a flower in Billie Holiday’s hair or the lone teardrop that rolled down her face while she sang Gloomy Sunday. Or maybe I was Langston Hughes’ spilled ink, a black piano key at a Duke Ellington jam session, or the recording device that Zora Neale Hurston used to capture the American spirit through the stories of African-Americans.

http://www.smithsonianchannel.com/site/smithsonian/show_soul_people_audio.do

But then again, maybe I was the gold velvet curtain at the old Lincoln Theatre that was raised just before Ella Fitzgerald took the stage. I can’t be certain, but I know I had to have been in the mix somehow. Being at the show Friday night just felt a little too familiar as I sat at the edge of my seat! :)

The very talented Blair Underwood, Jasmine Guy & Isaiah Thomas served as both the hosts and entertainers as they paid tribute to some of the HR greats with pizazz.

The In Series Theatre Ensemble, Washington Reflections Dance Company, and Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orquestra brought the splendor of the era to life.

One of the tunes that the orchestra played was Old Man Blues. This tune was recorded by Duke Ellington and his Orchestra in 1930 for the motion picture Check and Double Check.

Click below to listen to the original composition played on a victrola :

When the band leader announced they were going to play Old Man Blues, I must admit, based on the title, I anticipated that it would be a bluesy melancholic piece. I closed my eyes preparing to get emotional from an old man pouring out his blues. I was wrong. It was jumpin’! My eyes popped at the sound of the first note. My Muse started dancing to the groove and I followed her lead by immediately jotting down some notes on my program booklet.

And thus, the following poem was born.

———————————————

Prelude to Old Man Blues (draft)

Fresh pink flower and jet black curls/ Ruby red paint like Moulin Rouge/ White feather boa and long draped pearls/ Sequins’ silver shine and silk’s sexy smooth/ Fringe stacks and shakes/ Curves and bumps/ Ripped fishnets and MaryJane pumps/ Sweet French perfume with a splash of sweat/ Wet/ Turns & twists/ Leaps, flips, and heaven-bound jumps/ Tease and tap/ Spit and scat/ Swing. Shout. Stomp./ Do wop Do wop Do wop Do Wop deep inside an old man’s dream / in a dim lit corner uptown at the spot/ with feathers and petals at his feet/lint in his pockets and blues on his back/… the last tune

———————————————

Then after the show, I spotted this finely dressed gent! Sharp!

The best way to describe the experience for me would probably be so unorthodox, so unladylike but I’m gonna say it anyway. In fact, I’m gonna shout it. It was artistically, supercalifragilisticexpialidociously orgasmic! That’s right! I said it! It was that good–truly a night to remember at the Jewel on U!

___________________________________________________

A special shout out to my friends visiting from out-of-town, Althea “Alfie” Dixon and Sharon Rose, who accompanied me to the show.

———————————————

And that’s a wrap!
