Some say passion persuades. However, passion is but one element of persuasion. You must believe pass

Some say passion persuades. However, passion is but one element of persuasion. You must believe passionately in what you are saying. The audience must feel and see your passion. In a live presentation, that means they must see as well as hear you.

So many people are tempted to put their talk into an outline and present (or worse read) that outline to the audience slide by slide. You must work hard to eliminate the slide sirens that call you to read the words. It is seductive because it feels easier to you to simply press a button, look at your screen and read the text to the audience. A bad thing happens when you read…The audience does not look at you, they look at the screen. A connection is broken. An opportunity to persuade your passion is lost. The audience simply has a narrator reading what they see. The audience needs to be engaged in order to get the feeling of a powerful presentation.

The hard work for you is to choose the simple images and words to put on the screen. These should focus or highlight what you are saying, not simply outline what you are saying.

The aha moment for me came when I saw a particular blog post about 4 years ago. Gates, Jobs, & the Zen aesthetic. (I later bought the book Presentation Zen by Garr Reynolds and it changed the way I present.)

Presenting well takes planning and practice. Planning what you want to say and how you want to mix images with the words you speak. When you practice, standing up as if you are presenting, including going through the slides at the right moment while talking aloud, you will see that certain things you say do not work with the images you are presenting. You will learn to tweak and change what you say and the order of presentation. As you practice, you will get comfortable.

You must get comfortable so that you will not be afraid to have a blank screen up while you are talking. During those blank screen moments, the audience will focus on you and what you are saying. You will have an opportunity to connect in ways that a slide simply cannot do.

  Steve Jobs.

If you try to compete with the slide, your persuasion will get lost. The audience must try to determine if it should pay attention to you or the slide. While that is going on, they are not listening. You become disconnected from the audience.

  Bill Gates.

Compare the two images. Steve Jobs is talking to the audience and not competing with the background. Bill Gates may be saying something important but you cannot possibly focus on both him and the slide information.

When Steve Jobs talks with a slide, it is easy to understand. The mind is not required to think so hard that it becomes distracted by the speaker.

Quite simply, when you speak with the screen blank and then put up an image, it will be for emphasis. The images and you will dance in a rhythm that will not be noticed because it seems natural. It is at that point that you can begin to convey the passion you have about what you are presenting and begin better persuasion.

I’m having a hard time writing at the moment. It’s not a lack of ideas, it’s more a lack of passion.

I’m having a hard time writing at the moment. It’s not a lack of ideas, it’s more a lack of passion. I discovered writing when I was in my teens and loved it. I felt compelled to write down my every idea, thought and feeling. I kept a diary, I wrote most days. It wasn’t a choice, it was as natural as waking up, as natural as eating.

I wrote thousands of stories and seven novels, I wrote reviews and articles that appeared in magazine all over the place, but I wasn’t ready to share my fiction. I wanted to keep it for myself. I didn’t edit hardly any of it because I hate editing.

Then one summer, lacking ideas for my latest novel, I decided to edit the ones I had already written. I worked my way through all of them, and then again. Pretty soon I’d been editing for two years, and hadn’t written anything. For me editing takes the passion out of writing, it makes writing lose the magic that makes it special.

I haven’t written anything substantial for several years now. The fire that burned inside me is almost out. I have no lack of imagination, no lack of inspiration, just a lack of sitting my arse down and writing.

Writing now seems like a chore rather than a joy. In fact most things in adulthood seem like a chore. But some chores take priority, like earning money to pay the bills.

I’m not focused on writing like I was before. I have too many other hobbies that take up too much time.

I still write a short story occasionally, although I now have to push myself. When I do a spark of that old fire comes back, the joy returns while I weave my world from words. But I need a kick-start, I need something to push me.

Whilst threatened with redundancy earlier in the year I planned to write a book and to learn a language, at least until I found another job. Fortunately the redundancy didn’t happen, but unfortunately I don’t have the time to spend doing the things I would really like to do.

My latest idea was to get my books proof-read by a professional and start submitting them, but that’s actually fairly expensive if you want it done properly, and trust me, from what I can remember of my last (fourth) edits of my novels, they need to be looked at properly.

So I sit, filling up a blank screen with my moaning instead of writing another story, one I have an idea for. About a private detective who is visited by a beautiful woman who brings with her a box that kills people when it’s opened. Ok, so it’s not that original, but I could do something with it.

May be I would try and see where it takes me…

Just yesterday, I was taking pictures and shooting videos with my new iPhone 3GS. I was done and put it in my pocket. When I took it out minutes later, it wouldn’t turn on! The screen was completely blank no matter which buttons I pressed or for how long. I went home dejected, thinking I had to go to the AT&T store and get a replacement.

Well, after some research at home, I found out what I had to do.

Hold down the lock/unlock button at the top AND the home button at the bottom for at least 10 seconds, until the silver Apple icon appears. That resets the iPhone. I was worried it would wipe out everything (software, data, etc) like the hard reset on my old Windows Mobile Dell Axim x51v Pocket PC, but fortunately, it does not. So I’m happy once again.

For most people, buying a new screen is a simple task. Take it home, unplug the old one, plug tne new one, turn it on and there you go. For most people…

For me, it meant a whole decluttering operation*, desk cleaning, throwing away needless stuff, dusting, all sorts of things to make room for my brand new LG W53 22” monitor. I had already decided to keep my old monitor ( a 17” Philips) and use it as desktop extension, so I needed even more room. After hours of sweating and sewaring, everything was in place and I only needed to push a couple of power buttons. Imagine my disapointment when the only thing I could see on the screen was black… Now really… I already knew that I could connect the LG through D-Sub connection and it would work fine, but I wanted to use DVI. I am not even sure that the picture quality is better with DVI, but I just could not settle for D-Sub.

I called a friend of mine, who said that he never had problems with his DVI screen. He thought that maybe there was a setting on my screen that I should change in order to force DVI input, and proposed the all time classic: RTFM. As you can imagine, the problem was not solved, so I started searching for a solution on the vast depths of the internet. It turns out that it is a common problem, affecting various combinations of screens and graphic cards, with no pattern of appearance. The solution that some people had tried and the one that worked for me was the following:

My radeon has two DVI outputs. I plugged the DVI cable to the main one, plugged the other end on the monitor. Then I plugged a D-Sub cable on the secondary output (with the use of an adapter) and plugged it on the D-Sub input of the monitor. So, I had the monitor connected to the PC with both cables at the same time. When I turned on the monitor, it first received analog signal (the OSD read “D-Sub”) but switched soon to digital. I disconnected the D-Sub cable and the monitor loched on digital signal. That was it. I have absolutelly no fucking idea why this was necessary, but it worked, so I don’t care.

In case you have the same problem, give this solution a shot. For some people it has all that was needed, for some others it only solved the problem temporairily, for others it did not work. But you never know…

So you get your Dell Mini and find out that it has Bios A00 on it and the newest one is A05. So like

So you get your Dell Mini and find out that it has Bios A00 on it and the newest one is A05. So like me, you will want the latest version too. I put in the windows firmware on my USB flash drive and plugged it into the computer, i then decided to run the bios update from the floppy drive to make sure that the version was out dated. It was, so i clicked cancel and my computer started beeping and hung up. This is a bug dell has, even if you click cancel, the bios starts to auto update. I thought it was windows crashing and not the bios update, so i tried to shut the computer, when nothing worked, i pulled the battery out.

Now when i press the power button, the power light came on, but there was a blank screen. Nothing else. The system was bricked. Dell support was no help.

After days of searching i found the solution. You will need a External Floppy Drive for this to work.

Here is the fix:

1st: Get a USB Floppy (I don’t know if you can use a USBKey but a floppy worked for me)

2nd: Go to http://mydellmini.com/forum/possible-experimental-bios-to-address-video-memory-p11787.html and download the file named 268076.exe.zip

3rd: Unzip the file and run the 268076.exe to create your boot floppy
4th: Get the most recent Dell bios Rom file from the dell support site.
5th: Rename it to "BIOS.WPH" and copy it to your new boot floppy (Overwrite the one currently there)
6th: On the mini…Connect USB floppy drive and insert disk
7th: Unplug the power, Hold fn+b and plug power back in, 2 lights should flicker (Watch, they flicker fast)
8th: If the machine does not power on at this point hit power
9th: Walk away…. The system should start accessing the floppy drive and you really need to walk away.
10th: The Floppy will stop reading but still do not touch, it will eventually reboot itself (10 – 15 minutes in my case)

On reboot there will be a checksum error press F1 NOT F2 and let the bios run at least one time, it will figure it all out.
And you should be fixed.

Dell needs to fix this problem. It is serious.

The one thing I am really missing is the functionality of a Blank Screen Screensaver which has been present in 10.4 but is now missing on my new leopard mac. Therefore I created one for all the others I found on the net missing this function to save there screens for a maximum of lifetime. You can download the screensaver file here. Download the file to your desktop, rename it to “Blank Screen.qtz” and move it to “/Library/Screen Savers” on your mac (you need root privileges to do this), then goto your screensaver settings dialog and select “Other” – “Blank Screen”, voila ready.

Obama: I Have Become a Symbol
[snip]

    On Wednesday morning, House leadership aides pushed back against interpretations of this comment as self-aggrandizing, saying that when the presumptive Democratic nominee said, “I have become a symbol of the possibility of America,” he was actually trying to deflect attention from himself.

    No tape of the event exists and no one is denying the quote.

    But one leadership aide said the full quote put it into a different context. According to that aide, Obama said, “It has become increasingly clear in my travel, the campaign — that the crowds, the enthusiasm, 200,000 people in Berlin, is not about me at all. It’s about America. I have just become a symbol.”

Let’s be fair to Obama. What he said could be taken as simply acknowledging a fact. But even if it was meant that way — and not a proud declaration — he still shouldn’t be the one saying it. The campaign needs to walk a fine line between maintaining the magic and enthusiasm of the primaries and degenerating into self-parody. Things like the faux presidential seal step into the latter, as can talking about oneself as a “symbol” of anything.

So I’ve been waiting for fast and easy vitalization of XP, better WiFi support, and Supend and Hibernate to work before I started using Linux full time. I finally found out why my suspend was coming back with a blank screen.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=4960695&postcount=25

Basically, one needs to tell the system to redraw the screen on resume.

http://blog.vaxius.net/?p=43

I used the following and it worked for me, thanks sean!

$ sudo gedit /etc/default/acpi-support

SAVE_VBE_STATE=false
POST_VIDEO=false
USE_DPMS=false

then

$ sudo gedit /etc/acpi/suspend.d/03-nvidia-override-post.sh

Make the script look like the following:

#!/bin/sh

SAVE_VBE_STATE=false
POST_VIDEO=false
USE_DPMS=false

I had a raving review for Ubuntu (gusty) when I first move to it from fedora. Everything worked out-

I had a raving review for Ubuntu (gusty) when I first move to it from fedora. Everything worked out-of-the-box. However, I recently upgraded to Ubuntu hardy, and I had to go back to do some manual tweaking (which I thought I left behind in my fedora days).

If you computer goes blank and hangs on exit (shutdown, logoff, hibernate), and you are using an intel driver (if you used to use i810 or 915resolutions), here is a brief howto for the non-technical folks:

1. sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
2. Change the line Driver “intel” to Driver “i810″. You can just comment it in case you want to change it back later.
3. sudo yum install 915resolution

If you want hibernation, you need add the following file into your /etc/pm/sleep.d/ directory.

4. sudo echo ‘/etc/init.d/915resolution start’ > /etc/pm/sleep.d/915resolution.sh
5. sudo chmod a+x /etc/pm/sleep.d/915resolution.sh
6. restart (or logout and login)

For the technical folks:

I have a Dell 700m with the following video card auto-detected “Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device.” I read that the intel driver is now recommended, and thus default on Hardy. However it is having trouble exiting X. You’ll get a blank screen and system will hang when you do the following:

shutdown

hibernation

ctrol+alt+backspace

The last one leads me to suspect that it is the driver that is causing the trouble. So, my solution, for now, is to switch back to the old i810 driver and use 915resolution. However, in Hardy 915resolution don’t auto-run on resume so you have to make it do so yourself. See #4-5 above.

If anyone is having a better solution, or if you know what the intel driver issue has been fixed, please let me know.

So, almost directly after I experienced my problem with Ubuntu and switched to Arch Linux, someone e

So, almost directly after I experienced my problem with Ubuntu and switched to Arch Linux, someone else came to me with the exact same problem that caused me to jump distros.

What is this problem, you ask? Well, if you are using GDM, the screen will blink several times, GDM will crash, and the system will eventually freeze.If you are using KDM, anyone who logs in will be immediately logged back out.

The solution came when I realized that the X server errors were, in fact, being logged. They were getting dumped as a dot-file in the user’s home directory. It was something like “.xsession-errors”. Anyway, there were two lines in the file, and one of them complained about lnusertemp.

‘Twas then that I realized I’d seen a similar error while installing Arch Linux. A kernel update or something had set the wrong permissions on /tmp. I had forgotten about it though, because the knowledgeable community had documented the error on the forums, and I found the solution quickly.

So, if you are having a problem similar to what I described, today is your lucky day! Simply start in recovery mode from grub and issue the following handy command.

chmod -R 1777 /tmp

As for me? I’m staying with Arch Linux. Ubuntu is nice, but I really appreciate the more technical-oriented community attached to Arch. The signal to noise ratio is oh-so-much higher. Interestingly enough, the reason I was using Ubuntu was because I liked having a system I didn’t need to care about breaking. I now like Arch because it’s much easier to fix when something inevitably does break.

So I am looking at my referrers list and find the following websites were linking to me.

Madge Hoekstra of Clever Clogs recommended a few SL tools and tips including my own blog to Lee Laperriere, author of Lee’s Second Life – Finding the key.

I’m still getting hits from the other day when The Diva mentioned my customized vendor for Dedric Mauriacs Gadgets along with a few other people (and pictures). The 8-panel vendors are still in beta phase and are no longer available from the on-rez website. The great news is that the vendors still work. I’ve created many customizations both visual and in functionality. The vendors name changes as each panel is clicked so people know what they are paying for. Touching the preview panel provides the customer with a notecard about the product.

Crap Mariners blog, What Is this Crap? seems to have a vistor come to me from its home page. Crap lists my blog among others on the side panel that people can click on. This guy posts between six and seven articles a day with some really wild photographs of what is happening in second life. I consider him one of the guru’s of entertainment in second life. He is often found working on his clock tower and hosting live performers there.

The Grid Live makes a reference to my blog every now and then. The grid review has recently linked to my post about my visitor statistics in their post for second life news on February 5, 2008.

I installed the Linux operating system ubuntu on my PS3 this past weekend and ran into a few problems. The main problem was that once the kernal booted in the desktop environment, my HDTV just went into a blank screen as if the format of the screen was unsupported. I found that someone else had this same problem unanswered in the support forum. I posted a reply stating that I had the same problem along with a signature that linked to my second life blog. My hope is to eventually be able to run Second Life on my PS3.

Radar Masukami also has a blog with my link on the side. Someone hit it and came to my blog. Just like Crap Mariner, Radar is one of my neighbors on the five islands that make up our little community.
