From Friends Again, through Love and Money and into his solo career I have always admired the voice, guitar playing and songwriting of James Grant

James Grant’s career began in the early eighties, when he formed Friends Again with Chris Thompson (The Bathers). They preferred Supertramp to The Velvet Underground and whats more, were not afraid to admit it.

Although short-lived, their influence was huge, helping to define the emerging sound of the Scottish bands that followed them.

“Lullaby No 2″ – Friends Again

It was in Love and Money that James Grant found more widespread recognition; four albums, working with legendary producers such as Gary Katz(Steely Dan) and Tom Dowd(Rod Stewart, Eric Clapton, Aretha Franklin) several hit singles, a world-wide following and silver discs in the UK helped seal his reputation as one of the best songwriters in the country.

In 1996 he contributed four songs to the solo album of Capercaillie vocalist Karen Matheson, including the title track The Dreaming Sea. He has written extensively on all of Karens’ solo albums and continues to work in her band.
Working with musician and producer Donald Shaw and a stellar cast of players he delivered the stunning debut solo album Sawdust In My Veins, followed by the equally acclaimed follow-ups My Thrawn Glory, I Shot The Albatross and Holy Love.

Strange Flowers, his fifth album as a solo artist was released in March 2009.

Glam rock heroes Mott The Hoople stole the show at this year’s Tartan Clefs in Glasgow.

In the era of instant access illegal downloading the role of music in society has been diminished. Pouring out of every bar, club, taxi and window it is often easy to take for granted the life changing role music can have.

Nordoff Robbins is a music therapy charity, an organisation which helps to encourage the development of often severely disabled children by using music.

In the past such stars as Paolo Nutini and Orange Juice have become involved with the charity, often leaving deeply moved by the hard work and dedication shown by those involved. Operating on a shoestring budget the charity held their massive fund raising event the Tartan Clef awards in Glasgow on Friday night (November 27th) featuring a star studded cast.

After a memorable speech from fundraisers those in attendance at the SECC were treated to a vital performance from The View. Currently at work on their third album the band blazed through their recent single ‘Shock Horror’ before paying tribute to those involved in the charity.

Glasgow based hit merchants Lloyd Cole and The Commotions performed two of their classic hits before glam rock titans Mott The Hoople took to the stage.

Cult heroes in the early 70s the band are led by Hamilton born singer Ian Hunter. An inspiration to punk acts such as The Sex Pistols and The Clash, the band were on ferocious form.

First playing their classic hit ‘All The Way To Memphis’ the band then had the crowd on their feet for a rendition of the David Bowie penned ‘All The Young Dudes’.

Leaving to massive applause Mott The Hoople completed their first Scottish show in over thirty years by paying tribute to the work done by Nordoff Robbins.

Watch out for more interviews from the event soon! For more on the work done by Nordoff Robbins click HERE.

I have been a minor participant at Free Republic, the Internet’s leading conservative forum, s

I have been a minor participant at Free Republic, the Internet’s leading conservative forum, since September 2004. An online friend referred me to a discussion where members of Free Republic were talking about the 1952 and 1956 presidential elections, and using my maps from this page to make a point. I had to join FR to introduce myself to that group, and thank them for visiting. Because that was right after the “Rathergate” scandal, I thus became one of the “Pajamahadeen” that had just brought down the Sauronic eye of CBS.

Being a “Freeper” has been an interesting and fun experience, but I am disturbed by a current trend on those boards. For the past few weeks, at least since the latest fundraising drive ended, I have noticed that every new thread begins with a picture or video reminding us that Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor and presidential candidate, supports abortion. It doesn’t matter what the topic is, the anti-Mitt material pops up.

Personally, I think our current priorities ought to be making sure President Obama and his leftist pals don’t force their health care plan down our throats, and defeating as many moonbats as possible in next year’s congressional and gubernatorial elections, especially Harry Reid, Barbara Boxer, Chris Dodd and Slobbering Barney Frank. Then in 2011 or 2012 we can fight over who we want for the presidency. Consequently, yesterday I posted the following on the Kentucky board:

Is anyone else getting sick and tired of the Mitt Romney bashing that goes on at the beginning of each new thread? Granted, he may not be conservative enough for most of us (my first choice for 2012 would probably be Sarah Palin or Duncan Hunter), but he just HAS to be better than the Chicago mob that rules Washington now. Somebody ought to tell Jim Robinson that BHO and his cabal are the real enemy, not Mitt. Sheesh, an outside observer looking at us now is probably getting the impression that Republicans eat their own. And as for Mitt Romney being a Mormon, well, I’m more concerned about Harry Reid’s Mormon faith. Does he HAVE any?

Four replies have appeared since then, and only one agrees with me. The others just said we ought to do whatever we can to make Mitt Romney unelectable. I guess I’m going to take a timeout from Free Republic. Hopefully the Freepers will be acting more sensibly when I return. ’Bye, see you guys next year.

Sex Pistols off shoot Rich Kids have reformed and confirmed details of their first show in some 30 years.

One of the main songwriting forces on The Sex Pistols incendiary debut album, Glen Matlock’s role in the band was downplayed after his departure in 1977. Making way for prime anarchist Sid Vicious, the bass player was famously jettisoned for liking The Beatles.

In love with mid 60s British pop, Glen Matlock gathered some of London’s prime punk faces around him to form Rich Kids. Borrowing the talents of Midge Ure, Rusty Egan and Mick Jones the band’s line up never quite settled into one formation.

Lasting just long enough to release one cult classic album and a slew of singles, Rich Kids then splintered as various members went on to enjoy success with others acts.

Invited to re-join The Sex Pistols on their reformation, Glen Matlock has been re-introduced to the punk fold. However the bass player has always kept his solo career going, recently completing a short acoustic tour.

With the Public Image Limited tour set to begin in December, Glen Matlock has been inspired to reform his own post-Pistols project.

Rich Kids announced their reformation last week, intending to play a one off reformation show in aid of former member Steve New who is fighting ill health. The line up has not been confirmed, although a number of special guests are promised.

Rich Kids have confirmed the following show:

January
7 London o2 Academy Islington

given that my vent session yesterday probably came off as a tad bit.. um.. negative, maybe?.. I decided I would write a sunbeam post.

this is partially for me, because lately I have felt myself slipping into a slumpy, slightly antisocial, rut in my life in general. a positive kick in the head might help. maybe. and it’s also partially because my gorgeous, hilarious, super stylin friend, Erica (a.k.a. Rica.. que quiere decir “rich and tasty” in espanish. perfect.) nominated me as a “Kreativ Blogger.” woop woop! (p.s. Rica, you nailed it when you said we laugh till we stop breathing. every time. it’s my faaavorite.) so.. here it goes.

1. Copy the pretty picture and post it on your blog.
Idk what this is referring to. not gonna lie.

2. Thank the wonderful person that nominated you and link their blog.
done.

3. Write 7 things about yourself we don’t know.

1. I have had exactly 12 jobs. and I want a new one.

2. I basically like everything that is peach or guava flavored. just saying it makes my mouth water.

3. one time.. I had a gun pulled on me. while I was tracting as a missionary in Fort Myers, FL. he was an angry man. as you can see, however, I made it out alive.

4. I know an embarrassing amount about Disney movies. seriously. I own “Disney Scene It” every time. I’m the oldest of 5 kids, ok?

5. my favorite store is Target.. classy yet affordable, and therefore super dangerous to my bank account.

6. I am addicted to Bubble Breaker on my phone. whenever I have a dull moment, I pull it out. or when I’m on a phone call with a babbler at the crisis line. it helps my A.D.D. mind focus. and I just got a new phone exactly a week ago because the other one wigged out on me and stopped sending and receiving messages. and just since then my little counter says I’ve already played 303 games of it. oops.

7. I just barely stuffed tissues into the toes of my shoes because they are too big. and when heels this tall are too big, walking is almost impossible. this compressed tissue thing works like a charm.

I think I will skip the nomination part, except to say that I nominate any reader who would like to play this game.

and secondly, I’m going to add my own little dash of something extra to this post.. because I have not yet blogged anything about Thanksgiving. I really like Thanksgiving. it is delicious, but more importantly, it is important. it always seems to get leap-frogged because Christmas is just so dang awesome that everyone wants to sprint to it.
but it’s also important to be thankful for what we have. Heavenly Father blesses us in a lot of little and big ways on a daily basis, and I would just like to take a moment to write a small list of things that make me feel blessed.

1. a wicked awesome family who thinks I’m funny and who loves me even when I’m ugly
2. alone moments in the car when I can turn up the music and sing at the top of my lungs
3. friends who are beautiful, hilarious, talented, and love me for me.. they’re so cool that I sometimes think people just like me for my friends
4. the ability to create and appreciate creativity
5. hot milk steamers, cold fruit smoothies, peach rings, and grandpa’s mashed potatoes
6. a closet full of cute things to wear
7. a warm house and a soft bed complete with my down comforter and my boyfriend–the electric blanket
8. hugs… big ones.
9. the fact that I have a job.. and cool co-workers
10. and more than anything else… my knowledge of the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ, because it heals my soul and fills me with peace

happy holiday season guys, and I hope your snowflakes all have sunbeams shining through them.

I am officially a cougar after snogging a 20 year old on Friday. I mean Jesus – I’m far too old. What surprised me is what a good snog he was. Worthy of a rematch should I ever meet him again. I’m sure the boys I snogged when I was twenty were all pretty rubbish. Too much tongue and washing machine tendancies. Shame I can’t remember what “Tom the twenty year old” looked like.

The Crush has informed me that once he comes back from Afghanistan, he’s making his way to Miami to teach Americans to play with helicopters. Probably. Oh, and he doesn’t know when he’ll be back. If ever.

I went for a job interview. The job’s in Switzerland. I still haven’t found out whether I’ve got it or not. Part of me really wants to go. It’ll be fun to be abroad, new country, new people, new experiences. The other half of me is so comfortable in my little world that I can’t quite bear to wrench myself out of it. Deep down, however, I know that if the job’s offered, I’ll take it. We’ll see.

Only 16 days until I fly out to see the parents. Just think, 3 weeks of sunshine. I’m fake tanning in preparation.

N has moved out of London.

I’m still broken. I can’t remember if I mentioned it but I got broken playing rugby a couple of months ago. A trip to the doctors on Thursday confirms I’m still broken (as if I didn’t already know that) and there’ll be no more rugby this year. The frustration is not becoming.

I realised the other day that it’s been *whisper* 7 months since I last… ahem… [it's a family show]. Yes, I know. 7 months. I also realised that telling men you’re really not into one night stands (which I’m not) is a sure fire way of them trying to persuade you that they’re the one and if you have a one night stand with them it’ll be the best thing you’ve ever done. Yeah, alright boys.

I am amused that it turns out I tell “my boys” out in Afghan more than I tell my friends sometimes. The girlfriend of one of the chaps I write to came round on Saturday (for a Strictly, X Factor, wine night) and she turned to me suddenly and said “what’s this about Switzerland?”. I’d told her fella and hadn’t bothered to mention it to her.

There’s an item on Jeremy Vine this afternoon about cyber bullying. It reminds me of when I was 16. The internet was new. Very new. Someone set up a site about me. Can’t remember why or when or what. I do remember crying though. What an odd memory.

G.E. (Hubby’s new moniker) and I hadn’t planned to venture out into the masses today, but we ended up making one trip to Costco to purchase Advent Villages for our grandchildren. Not that they were a HOT item, but I knew if we didn’t make the effort, fate would swoop in and grab up every box. And I’d be kicking myself for the next 28 days! It never fails.

As it turns out, I was glad we went. OLD-fashioned Christmas music, hearkening back to my favorite era – the 1940s, chimed in with the noise of bustling shoppers; and I felt my first twinge of holiday spirit.

Since our excursion, I’ve been thinking of my holiday working experience at Fargo’s Department Store in Pocatello. (This was when the day after Thanksgiving was called “the day after Thanksgiving.) Anyway, I landed a job at there at age 16 because I was a Fargo’s Fashion Board Consultant! Eight teens from the city’s two high schools – Pocatello High and Highland High – were chosen to “unite more closely the fashion preferences of the High School Coed with Fargo’s young fashion merchandising.”

Fargo's Christmas Party in the 1920s

Part of our duties included working during the Christmas shopping days which started off with a parade to welcome Santa to the city in general and the department store in particular. Like Macy’s parade in New York City, this tradition had been part of Fargo’s history for decades.

I think I became part of that tradition because I could not wrap packages. One of my first duties – besides uniting young fashion preferences with merchandising – was in the gift wrapping department. Unfortunately, I was SLOW and SLOPPY. The taping was anything but discreet, and the curling ribbon needed a perm. The more I tried to whip that paper grosgrain into ringlets, the straighter it became. Sometime between paper cuts and blistered thumbs, my supervisor transferred me across the street to the toy department.

With that transfer came many opportunities: breaking the news to irate parents that we were out of Slinkies and bouffant Barbies; counting back change – correctly; climbing shelves without ladders; AND co-starring with Santa as Jackie-in-the-Box in the Christmas parade.

The job description only required jumping up and down, bobbling back and forth and around, and SMILING … a lot. (Remember I’m good at that!)

I suppose it’s only right that I should work with Santa. I’d written a play about him years before, and I starred as Mrs. S. who had to step in for the old man when he came down with a terrible cold.

Most importantly, however, I am actually Santa’s grandaughter. Everyone in Pocatello knew that the REAL Santa only came to Fargo’s, and in 1963 that Santa just happened to be MY Grandpa B. – before he retired to Seal Beach, California and before I made my debut as a giant toy!

This year we’ll wait until tomorrow for the big meal, because we want to have it with Gene and Rezia, and they are out of town today, visiting Gene’s family in western Kentucky. In the meantime, maybe I can finally resize and post the pictures from last week’s anniversary celebration. And here is a list my pastor shared with us at his most recent sermon, giving us reasons to be thankful for things we normally aren’t thankful about.

I Am Thankful:

For the teenager who is not doing dishes but is watching TV, because that means he is at home and not on the streets.

For the taxes I pay, because it means that I am employed.

For the mess to clean after a party, because it means that I have been surrounded by friends.

For the clothes that fit a little too snug, because it means I have enough to eat.

For my shadow that watches me work, because it means I am out in the sunshine.

For a lawn that needs mowing, windows that need cleaning, and gutters that need fixing, because it means I have a home.

For all the complaining I hear about the government, because it means that we have freedom of speech.

For the parking spot I find at the far end of the parking lot, because it means I am capable of walking, and that I have been blessed with transportation.

For my huge heating bill, because it means I am warm.

For the lady behind me in my place of worship when she sings off key, because it means that I can hear.

For the pile of laundry and ironing, because it means I have clothes to wear.

For weariness and aching muscles at the end of the day, because it means I am capable of working hard.

For the alarm that goes off in the early morning hours, because it means that I am alive.

and finally….

For too much e-mail, because it means I have friends who are thinking of me.

Happy Thanksgiving! And see my message from last April 9 on when and where the first Thanksgiving really happened.

This year is the OFF year, meaning that our married sons feast with their in-laws. That does NOT mean, however, that I get out of cooking. Hubby insists upon having turkey dinner AND all the trimmings in order to procure left-overs. This is from a man who doesn’t particularly like left-overs!

I don’t really mind throwing together a feast because I don’t cook all that much. And I am not particularly good at it. As much as I hate to admit it, I don’t really like to cook. Oh, once in a while I get in the mood to bake or to try a new recipe, but most of the time, I throw together pretty pathetic dinners - unoriginal repeat offenders.

I do prepare a nice Sunday dinner that provides a meal or two later in the week. I guess it’s only right to create a Sunday-type dinner on Thursday. Because the guests are very few in number, I won’t knock myself out like I do when my daughters-in-law (who are gourmet cooks) sit at the table.

I won’t resort to roasting a Jenny-O turkey roll, but I will serve Stove-Top Stuffing with added veggies: sautéed celery, onions, and mushrooms. I’ve already thrown a frozen Marie Calendar pumpkin pie in the oven so I can bake the frozen Rhodes Rolls tomorrow.

I’ll serve canned cranberry sauce – both the jellied and the chunky versions, BUT I am preparing a side dish I haven’t fixed in decades – the traditional French green bean casserole. You know – the one made with mushroom soup, topped with canned French onions. Now that’s gourmet cookin’!

I know the menu sounds like it’s just a step above frozen turkey TV dinners, but we will enjoy Mom’s candied yams, and the potatoes won’t be the instant variety. And it should outshine the turkey dinner at the Yellowstone Hotel that my parents, sister and I suffered through many years ago.

The event was NOT Thanksgiving but rather Christmas Eve. Mom usually prepared a delicious dinner for our family and my grandparents. That particular year, however, Grandma H. had passed away, and Grandma and Grandpa B. moved to Leisure World in Southern California.

Mom thought it might be kind of fun to dress up and go to the Bannock Hotel, home of the most elegant and delicious food in Pocatello. Unfortunately, when we arrived we learned that we needed reservations. Mom was shocked! “Who eats out on Christmas Eve?”

Hungry, we drove from one restaurant to another only to find that they were either closed or booked. Finally, our hunt brought us to the Yellowstone Hotel, located near the railroad station. Now, the hotel may have been a winner WAY back in the day, but not in the early 1960s. Disappointed, we wandered back to the dining room where we found plenty of empty tables. In fact, we had the place to ourselves!

And like Ralphie’s family in A Christmas Story, we sadly picked at our dry turkey and even drier stuffing. Now, we laugh and laugh about that experience, but it was dismal enough that when I considered eating out on Thanksgiving, a vision of the Yellowstone Hotel discouraged the thought!

I am thankful we’ll be eating at home tomorrow!

A posting on Graham Parker has been long overdue on this site so here we go but don’t ask me questions.

“Don’t Ask Me Questions” – Graham Parker

Crimson autograph is what we leave behind, everywhere man set foot.
War mongers laughing loud behind a painted face
Throwing titbits to the crowd then blowing up the place.

Chorus

Hey lord dont ask me questions, hey lord dont ask me questions
Hey lord dont ask me questions please!
Hey lord dont ask me questions, hey lord dont ask me questions
Hey lord aint no answer in me. (solo)

Well I stand up for liberty but cant liberate
Pent up agony I see you take first place.
Well who does this treachery I shout with bleeding hand
Is it you or is it me well I never will understand.

Chorus then solo

Well I see the thousands screaming rushing for the cliffs
Just like lemmings into the sea, well well well
Who waves his mighty hand and breaks the precious rules?
Well the same one must understand who wasted all these fools.

Chorus

Aint no answer in me no, aint no answer in me
uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh..

The above track was taken from his 1976 debut album “Howlin’ Wind” which as you can see was credited purely to Graham Parker

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Graham Parker sang in small-time English bands such as the Black Rockers and Deep Cut Three while working in dead-end jobs like a glove factory and a petrol station. In 1975, he recorded a few demo tracks in London with Dave Robinson, who would shortly found Stiff Records and who connected Parker with his first backing band of note, The Rumour.

Graham Parker had one track, “Back to Schooldays”, released on the compilation album, A Bunch of Stiff Records for Stiff Records.

In the summer of 1975 Parker joined forces with ex-members of three British pub-rock bands to form Graham Parker and the Rumour. The new group consisted of Parker (lead vocals, guitar) with Brinsley Schwarz (lead guitar) and Bob Andrews (keyboards) (both ex Brinsley Schwarz), Martin Belmont (rhythm guitar, ex Ducks Deluxe) and Andrew Bodnar (bass) and Steve Goulding (drums) (both ex-Bontemps Roulee). They began doing the rounds of the British pub rock scene, often augmented at times by a four-man horn section known as The Rumour Brass: John “Irish” Earle (saxophone), Chris Gower (trombone), Dick Hanson (trumpet), and Ray Bevis (saxophone).

As noted above the band’s first album, Howlin’ Wind, was released to acclaim in 1976 and was rapidly followed by the stylistically similar Heat Treatment. A mixture of rock, ballads, and reggae-influenced numbers, these albums reflected Parker’s early influences (Motown, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison) and contained the songs which formed the core of Parker’s live shows — “White Honey”, “Soul Shoes”, “Lady Doctor”, “Fool’s Gold”, and his early signature tune “Don’t Ask Me Questions”, which hit the Top 40 in the UK.

Parker and the Rumour built a reputation as incendiary live performers: the promotional album Live at Marble Arch was recorded at this time and shows off their raw onstage style. Like the pub rock scene he was loosely tied to, the singer’s class-conscious lyrics and passionate vocals signaled a renewal of rock music as punk rock began to flower in Britain.

It was 1977’s “Pink Parker” EP which first caught my attention which was supported by this 1977 TOTP performance of The Trammps classic.

It was undoubtedly as a live performer that Parker came into his own though his 1978 live album “Parkerilla” didn’t quite match up to expectations.

Three sides were live, with no new songs and with versions of previously released songs that added nothing to the prior studio cuts. Side four was devoted to a “disco” remake of “Don’t Ask Me Questions”. The 2-disc record was regarded by some as a ploy to fulfil Parker’s contractual commitment to Mercury records, and as a ripoff for fans. Others think it one of the better live albums of the 70s on a par with Thin Lizzy’s Live and Dangerous. (not me!).

Energized by his new label, Arista Records, and the presence of legendary producer Jack Nitzsche, Parker followed with Squeezing Out Sparks, widely held to be the best album of his career.

For this album, The Rumour’s brass section, prominent on all previous albums, was jettisoned, resulting in a spare, intense rock backing for some of Parker’s most brilliant songs. Of particular note was “You Can’t Be Too Strong”, one of rock music’s rare songs to confront the topic of abortion, however ambivalently.

Squeezing out Sparks is still ranked by fans and critics alike as one of the finest rock albums ever made. Rolling Stone named it #335 on their 2003 list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. In an early 1987 Rolling Stone list of their top 100 albums from 1967-1987, Squeezing Out Sparks was ranked at #45, while Howlin’ Wind came in at #54.

The companion live album Live Sparks, sent to US radio stations as part of a concerted promotional campaign for Parker, showed how well the songs worked on stage, and included another snapping r&b cover, the Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back“.

The jettisoned brass section, incidentally, would continue to play on other people’s records credited as The Irish Horns (on the album London Calling by The Clash) or The Rumour Brass, most notably on Katrina and the Waves‘ 1985 hit “Walking On Sunshine“.

Sit by my window and look outside, wonder why the sun don’t shine on me

What’s wrong with you, you stupid child, don’t you think that I’m the one

you’re waiting to see?

Don’t talk too much ’cause she falls for the suckers, makes her feel

everything is secure

Don’t ever leave a footprint on the floor

Chorus: Don’t bother with the local girls, don’t bother with the local girls

They don’t bother me

She’s probably half-wit, she must be straight,

or bound to have a mother who knows nothing but hate

Don’t want to love her, I’d rather knock her down

Standing at the busstop where she waits each morning

So isolated that she thinks that the army is the place where a man ought to be

Don’t bother with them, they don’t bother me

Chorus

They got the walk, they got the talk, right down without a flaw

At 6:00 I got to stop my dreaming at the counter of the store

Chorus

Without a doubt I got to intercept, must be time someone ran and shouted in

their head

You look all right in the cheap print dress,

but everytime you swish it ’round you make me disappear

I’m aware of exactly what I’m doing, making everything a mystery

Don’t bother with it, it don’t bother me

90’s R&B girl group SWV came out for a Thanksgiving concert over the weekend, all three sisters looking alive and well and kickin’ it with Lil’ Mo. Hell, if it wasn’t for their BET Awards perfomance last year (with TLC & Envouge), I would’nt have a damn clue whether these ladies were dead or alive! Glad it’s the latter.

Sticking with faces from the milk carton, 90’s R&B style, here’s a pic of half of Jodeci, K-Ci & JoJo, snapped on the red carpet at the Soultrain Awards earlier this month…
