There is a certain atmosphere in the holiday resorts during the off season that I really like. It is hard to say just what it is, a touch of nostalgia, a hint of anticipation, a dash of surrealism, a vast, empty space for projection of images, dreams, hopes. The place hibernates, but it is much alive in the minds of people who are mostly far away. They think of it in colour, not in rainy shades of grey. There is a bit of decay in the air, of loss, but more than that, an energy of unspoken expectations and memories.

We went to Bled today for a rainy walk by the lake. Well, you could say that Bled, being icon of Slovenia’s tourism, is never out of season, but that is not entirely true. Sure, the winter season will start soon but right now it is just where I like it, neither here nor there.

If these chairs could speak, what would they tell? Stories of animate summer night conversations? Or complain about the cold and dampness of their storage, of aking wires and rust?

Bled, Slovenia – July 26th, 2009.

Up pretty early by my standards, we leave at 9 for Canyoning, and I grab some breakfast – big tub of yoghurt – and wait for the girls at their hostel. They seem to have had a pretty big night after I left – with some picking up slovenian men and going for a midnight dip in the lake. Georgie is still drunk and does a ‘Ashley’ jig from Cesky.

Doing the 'Ashley' Jig.

We hop in the car, and head out of town. Before being called back as someone was left behind. We go to our guides crib and pick up our equipment which consisted of running shoes, booties, wetsuits and helmets. Piling into the car, we get driven out into the hills of the surrounding mountains, and end up between Bohinj and Bled at a canyon site.

We are told to put ALL of our stuff in the wetsuit and place them on like a backpack – see pic for details. And hike up about 20 minutes to the top of the canyon. Where our guide tells everyone to immediatly go to the toilet, as not to piss our wetties. Its a bit of a struggle getting on the wetsuits for most people but before you know it, the guides giving us all the info we need before setting off down the river.

Our wettie backpacks.

We climbed down into the canyon and were told to sit on the edge of this little pool – where the guide immediatly splashed us with ice cold water. Which was a good idea as we were just about to do our first dive into icy cold water.

The next few hours were spent traversing, sliding, jumping and climbing through a picturesqe canyon in Slovenia. And I must admit it was one of the most funnest activities I have done. Certainly an awesome experience. And plan to do it again, but at a higher degree of difficulty.

The gangs all here. After our canyoning trip.

We go back to the hostel, where we cook up some yummy omelletes before I say goodbye to the girls and head off to the train station to go to Ljubljana and then a train to Zagreb. Before getting on a night train to Zadar.

This would have to be one of the worst, but certainly one of the memorable train rides I have taken. The first train to Zagreb was fine – it was an Austrian train so it was modern and up to date. However, at Zagreb – where I got a quick snap – and a feed. Before getting onto the next train.

The train to Zadar was an old fashion rattler, it had compartments and I’d managed to score one by myself for a while, til some friendly Germans joined myself in the carriage with an iPod dock and speakers. Thinking I’m gonna have a pretty good trip, the ticket conductor gets on board and tells me I have to go to a different carriage as this one will be seperated and going to Split, where as I’m going to Zadar.

Zagreb Station....not much going here.

So I head to the rear carriages as told, and I have a look at all the compartments. There is one with room – an old lady, a dog and a daughter (I presume) – and ask them if I can take a seat. Only to be rudely told “Seats taken” in a forrest gump kind of stupor. Fair enough. So I dump my back in the aisle and watch as the country side goes by in darkness with a twinkly of light.

I go to get comfy leaning up against my bag in the aisle, before the friendly Austrian girl who caught the train with me from Ljubljana comes up to me and says she has a spot for me in her compartment. Sweet.

The compartment is rather small, cramped and has 4 people. We all sort of spread out, and weave around each other as best as possible whilst trying to sleep. It was basically human tetris.

Its not long til we’re all drifting off to the rattle of the train carriage.

Ljubljana and Lake Bled – July 24th, 2009.

So I wake up, chill out, and head down the road to a cafe for breakfast with my american hostel buddy. Before heading back, packing the bag and going to explore Ljubljana.

I take the bus in, and go straight for the Dragons Bridge. And my first impressions and now placed in the gutter as this part of Ljubljana is amazing. Its a gorgeous little bit of the city. The Bridge itself is small, no traffic and two dragons protecting it. With the castle in the background and river below, its pretty special.

Dragon Bridge, Ljubljana.

I make my way through some markets and head to the Furnicular, to head up to the Castle. Its not a long wait, and its not long before we’re making our way up to the top of the hill. The hill is basically the centre of the town. And you get a pretty splendid view of the surrounding area. Despite the gloomy look of the majority of the city.

Ljubljana from the Castle.

I walk around the Castle, its courtyards are free, and the buildings you pay to go in. Being on a tight schedule, I opt to just walk around, then head off down to the city below. Its a pretty green walk down to the bottom, with plenty of vantage points of the city.

Chilling on the walk down.

I get down to the bottom of the hill and cruise around. There are these cool little markets around, so I go off and explore them. Before hitting a Mariachi Band and stick around and watch them do their thing y’all.

Mariachi El Ljubljana.

I get in a hurry and go off to get my bag, and head to Lake Bled. I get to the station, and call up the hostel (they have free pick up). However upon the guy arriving, he says “I can’t take you cause we’re full. I’ll drive you to town and you can get a room there”. Oh just fricking great. I spend the next 30-40 minutes searching for hostels and just staying at the first one I find. It’ll do the trick.

I go for a walk down to the Lake and it is pretty impressive. A bright, glacier blue lake that is just waiting to be dived into. There also seems to be some sort of Festival going on with lots of stalls and market shops around.

First view of Lake Bled.

I go around the corner to the supermarket to get some food and a cheap beer or 3. And on my way back I run into Clare and Georgie (two girls I met at Cesky Krumlov). We finish off the beers and head off to have some pizza at Rustic Pizza. Even though its slightly pricey, the pizza is unbelieveable. By far the best I have had (until I get to Italy). And goes down pretty well.

We go grab a jumper as its getting cool – before heading down to the Lake to watch the fireworks and get into the spirit of a festival – that is drink copious amounts of alcohol and have a good time. We grab some Mojitos to go, and beers before seeing the whole lake being flood with light.

Thousands of candle lit egg shells.

The whole lake is being covered in little egg shells with candles in them. The photos do not at all do them justice at all. Something that you don’t see every day, but literally mind blowing.

The candle lit egg, in a plastic beer glass. All class guys.

We drink some more, and wait around for the fireworks, over the castle and monastery on the lake. Which go off pretty well. Before going to a pub and drinking some more beer. Its a pretty early night -there isn’t a lot of ‘bars’ here. But it is a pretty fun night.

Fireworks over the lake.

Time has come to tell you about the last stretch of my holiday – the part when I went roadtrip

Time has come to tell you about the last stretch of my holiday – the part when I went roadtripping with mom in the northern Balkans.

Though I missed my company from the Swedish and Italian part of my holiday, I was by far the most impressed with Slovenia. What a spectacular country! Amazing. I mean, I had pretty high expectations, but reality surpassed them, easily. Mom was expecting it to be very “Eastern state”ish, but I who had done some research on it prior to departure knew there would be some gorgeous spots, but I still hadn’t expected the whole country to be like…well, quite frankly – Canada. And those of you who know me, know that coming from me that’s a pretty big statement.

Spectacular, sensational, stunning Slovenia!

Mom and I drove down roads less travelled, as I mentioned at some point during our trip. Coming across dirt and coarse gravel roads was most often completely unexpected; the map certainly never gave a clue of what was to come! But it made it all the more exciting, so we didn’t complain. This resulted in us coming in to Bled (paradise?) on a small gravel back road across some fields instead of on the highway, but hey who cares?!

Bled was….just wonderful. Every bit as pretty as the photos I’d seen of it. And we totally lucked out with our hotel room, which turned out to be the suite with the lake view…bliss! Even Ljubljana turned out to be gorgeous – and not even I was expecting that! I recommend everyone to make Slovenia their next holiday destination – be it in winter or summer. The country truly has a lot to offer in all seasons! For some snapshots of this European paradise, click here.

I´ve been remiss in updating, but the last three days have been a roller coaster of experiences. So much to share, so little time!

I am currently in Croatia, but I really did not want to leave Slovenia. I am in love after three days there. My last day I spent in a small lake town called Bled, in the Slovenian Alps. Gorgeous. Jaw-dropping. And the weather was perfect. In Bled, there isn´t much to the town, but the real star is the lake. It is surrounded by lush hills and mountains, towered over by a medieval castle up on a precarious ledge, and in the middle of the lake is a tiny little church on an island, like a fairytale. I strolled around the lake for about an hour, watching children feed the ducks, traditional boats called plenta carry tourists out to the island where they rang the church bell ten times for good luck, soaking up the sun, and hiking up to the castle. I also took a peek at an infamous villa. Today it is called Villa Bled, but when Slovenia was part of Yugoslavia, the Communist dictator Tito owned this villa as his own personal retreat. Today it is a hotel and restaurant, and I relished marching up the steps of a famous Communist I studied as a college history major. I also tried a traditional dessert, called kremina rezina, made in Bled. It is essentially a cream sandwich – thick cream between two thin layers of pastry. Absolute heaven with a cup of coffee.

While in Bled, I stumbled across a small crafts market and met a local beekeeper. There is a long tradition of beekeeping in Slovenia, and the beekeepers used to paint folk designs on the panels of the beehives to help guide the bees to their homes. Today they still paint these panels and sell them at craft markets along with their honey.

I left Ljubljana on a cold, misty morning at 6 am. Truly, I was and still am sad to have to leave Slovenia. I think I found my European home.

I arrived in Croatia yesterday, and it was a shaky transition. I am very proud of myself for remaining calm. Upon arrival in Zagreb, I tried to withdraw the local currency, kuna, from the ATM. No luck. I tried another ATM. No luck. I could not withdraw a single lipa of Croatian money. When I tried to call my ATM card company, I discovered it is not a 24 hour number, and with the time difference, it was in the middle of the night back home. Immediately called Mark to let him know the situation. And then told myself not to panic. As a precaution, I carry an emergency reserve of US dollars, so I exchanged just enough for 24 hours (exchange rate fees are high at exchange bureaus and banks, which is why ATMs are generally better with lower fees). Long story short, my husband figured out (after numerous phone calls) that I could get a cash advance from one of my credit cards at a local bank. There are steep fees for that, but better than waiting for wired money or using up the last of my emergency cash reserves! The reason I could not use my ATM card? Croatia is still listed by the US State Department on the travel warning list, because of the violence of 1991, so my ATM MC company does not allow ATM withdrawals there. They never mentioned this when I called twice to double-check that my ATM card would work in all the places I am traveling to. Frustrating. Always carry a cash reserve in US money.

I took a shuttle bus from downtown Zagreb to the airport, and hopped on a short 35 minute flight to Dubrovnik. Saved a lot of time over a 12 hour bus journey! I reserved my ticket back in March, so I was able to get it for only US$33.

Dubrovnik is beautiful. Magical. Surreal. It is a medieval walled city made of stone clinging to the hills and mountains along the Adriatic Sea. The sun is shining so the sea is sparkling bright blue. Think the Greek Isles or Italy. The countryside is rocky and arid. I explored Dubrovnik all day today, and it is a maze of tiny lanes, zig-zagging staircases, and secret gardens. The main streets are crowded with tourists, but slipping down a side street quickly gets you into a private world. Signs of the war with Serbia for independence in 1991 are still visible, but barely. The city has been beautifully rebuilt. There are still pockmarks from shrapnel in the stone roads and buildings, and new whiter stone next to gray stone reveals repair work.

This afternoon, my host Zeljka drove three of her guests, including me, up to the hill above the city to a small museum commemorating the 1991 war. It is inside the battered fort built by Napoleon in the 1800s, and used by the Croatian army to defend Dubrovnik from the Serbs. It is a moving museum. Video footage of the attacks. The museum is obviously slanted towards the Croatian viewpoint, but I was deeply moved. Zeljka was 16 when Croatia declared independence from Yugoslavia. The attack by Serbia on Dubrovnik was a complete surprise, and even today locals do no know why they attacked Dubrovnik, since it did not seem to serve a strategic purpose. She showed us the hill from which the Serbs bombarded the Old City for weeks, reducing it to bombed out and burned buildings and rubble. She had to evacuate to a nearby hotel basement with her family and neighbors. Zeljka explained how they did not have a real army to stand up to the Serbs, since the capital of Yugoslavia was Belgrade, a city in Serbia. Boys as young as 15 went up into the hills to defend their city. Zeljka says it was a miracle Dubrovnik was not taken by the Serbian forces, since they had a modern army with tanks, fighter jets, and a navy. There may still be land mines in the surrounding hills. I am very glad Zeljka shared all this with me – very moving, and makes all the turmoil of the Balkans real to me.

I also swam in the Adriatic today. Heaven! Now I am off to find a cup of coffee and a moonlight cafe perch…

.
