The Outsiders By: S.E Hinton
“It is very difficult for me to write about myself, and especially The Outsider, which was written at a horrendous time in my life, was published by a series of mind-boggling synchronicities, and has gone further than any author dared dream.” (1) This passage sets the scene of S.E. Hinton’s famous book The Outsiders. The following summary is a brief outline of this interesting story that was made into a movie.
The book begins with Ponyboy exiting a movie wishing he looked like Paul Newman. On his long walk home he is jumped by some members of the middle class gang known as the Socs. His friends, the greasers, come to his rescue before he is seriously hurt. Four months earlier his friend Johnny had been jumped by some Socs and seriously hurt, emotionally and physically.
Later on, Ponyboy and Johnny go to a movie with Dally and sit behind two Socs girls, Cherry and Marcia. Dally is acting rude to the girls and Johnny and Ponyboy tells him to stop. Cherry becomes angry at Dally’s behavior and dumps a soda that he has given her in his face. This is rare because everyone was afraid of Dally’s hot temper. Dally leaves and does not return.
After Dally leaves, the girls asked Ponyboy and Johnny to sit next to them for the duration of the movie. Two-Bit, one of Ponyboy’s friends also joins them. While they are walking to Two-Bit’s house to drive the girls home they encounter the girls’ boyfriends. Cherry and Marcia leave with their boyfriends in order to avoid a fight.
Ponyboy and Johnny go to a park to rest and they fall asleep. When they wake up they realize that it is late and Ponyboy hurries home. When he arrives home he gets in an argument with his older brother Darry. Darry is upset with Ponyboy for coming home late and slaps him. Ponyboy runs outside and tells Johnny that he wants to run away. Together they run off for a while. After Ponyboy calms down he decides to return home.
On their way home they go to the park and encounter Cherry and Marcia’s boyfriends. They get into a fight. Ponyboy is almost drowned and falls to the ground unconscious. In self-defense Johnny kills Cherry’s boyfriend, Bob. When Ponyboy comes to, Johnny explains to Ponyboy what happened. They rush to Dally’s friend’s house and ask for Dally. When they find Dally they explain what is happening and Dally gives them a gun, money, some dry clothes for Ponyboy and directions to an abandoned Church in the country. He also instructs them to buy a week’s supply of food and tells them that he will be there as soon has he thinks it is safe.
When they arrive at the abandoned church they go and buy a week’s supply of things that they need including a book called Gone with the Wind. After several days, Dally finds them and drives them to town and buys them some food. After they finish eating, Johnny tells Dally that he wants to turn himself in. Dally does not want him to because he does not want Johnny to wind up in jail like he had. While they are driving back they notice that the church is burning. When they arrive they are told that there are children in the church. Johnny and Ponyboy immediately brave the flames to rescue the children. While they are helping the last of the children out the roof starts to cave in. Ponyboy escapes with only minor burns but the roof caves in on Johnny. Dally goes back in to the church to save him. Johnny and Dally are both rushed to the hospital. Johnny is critically injured with a broken back and Dally is badly burned.
While Ponyboy and Two-Bit were visiting Dally, Dally asked for Two- Bit’s switch blade and put the blade under his pillow. Later, Pony boy also learns that there is going to be a fight in retaliation for Bob’s death. He encounters Randy, one of Bob’s friends, and Randy tells him that he does not want to fight because even if they win it would not change anything.
Dally comes dashing in to join the fight and the greasers win. After the fight is over they rush to the hospital to see Johnny. On the way they are stopped by police. Dally makes up a story saying he is rushing Ponyboy to the hospital due to his obvious injuries from “falling off his motorcycle,” so the officer escorts them to the hospital. When they arrive at the hospital Johnny tells Pony boy to “stay gold” and then he dies. Dally becomes really angry and robs a grocery store. Police pursue him in to a street. They shoot him because he is pointing a (unloaded) gun. Dally dies as his friends watch.
Ponyboy has to go to court because of Bob’s death, but all of the charges are dropped. While he is in school he is depressed and not getting good grades until he write The Outsiders for a project.
In the book Ponyboy learns that “You don’t stop living just because you lose someone, life goes on.” He also realizes the importance of family and friends. When Johnny says “stay gold” that means to keep being childlike and he is referring to a poem by Robert Frost. An example of being childlike is liking sunsets.
