one whole year

Yes it’s one year today when I first started my WordPress blog!  So far I have managed to write 362 posts.  The idea was to write one per day, but  it was a while before I discovered being able to schedule these posts.  My aim for the next year is to beat my record!

art is everywhere

What have I blogged about? wittered on about?  Well all sorts – mostly Art.  Art can be found everywhere though!   I didn’t want my blog to be dry academia (succeeded there alright), but neither did I want it to be full of too personal stuff either: outpourings, confessionals.  Rantings? occasionally…. moaning?  trying to keep it down to a minimum.  I also try to steer clear of politics.  I do have views but I think there are too many blogs that focus on political matters.

I have LOTS of categories!  Including our travels, books I’ve read, TV and films I have watched and of course artist’s birthdays.  I am adding to these.  Those I missed will get an airing soon.  The only criterion for selection is that I do actually happen to like the artist’s work, otherwise it would be a never-ending task, bit like the sorcerers Apprentice filling the buckets…

I have still got more things planned, and when I can work out how to link gallery pics with written pages about artist’s (as in my Altered book) I will do so, as this shall make it tidier.  Many thanks for those who have commented on my blog, it is very much appreciated!  I would like to thank my right and left middle finger for typing…I would like to thank GOD that I still don’t smoke, or I would be dead by now smoking AND typing…….that’s it really!  Cheers!

Happy Birthday Blog!

One year! What a difference a year makes! It’s a total cliche and yet totally true. In early November of last year, I was probably still unsure if I would bother with this whole blogging thing. Now, I can’t imagine myself ever not blogging!

It all began with this post. It’s a page-turner, let me tell you. It’s my summary of life, living, and how best to live.

It is intended, I suppose, to be the period at the end of my academic philosophy career. It’s also meant as a kind of preface to what would come after. Everything I write, I think, is reducible to what I write here. Trust me, not for the easily bored.

Initially, I set this website up because it allowed me to distribute my writing (and eventually music) without securing the permission of any “gatekeepers.”

When future historians discuss how the internet and social media changed the world, this is what they will discuss: the creation of an almost costless means to disseminate ideas to almost anywhere in the world. If the Gutenberg press was a big deal, we ain’t seen nothing yet.

Then, after posting material for a month or so, something else clicked.

I realized the medium afforded the possibility of a different approach to writing and a different kind of writing. This is the post I wrote, trying to make sense of this hunch. I wrote and wrote, with no clear end in sight and when it was done, I hit “publish.”

It’s an important turning point. Slowly but surely this off-the-cuff approach became my modus operandi. If it’s a day for posting, I sit at the computer. I start writing. When it’s done, I publish. It’s made me a much better writer.

Not surprisingly, it wasn’t too long after this turning point that I wrote my first fashion post.

And it wasn’t long after that, it seemed I had quite a few people commenting on a regular basis. And then another light bulb went off.

The real beauty of all this is that ideas sometimes bring people together. Sometimes, ideas can be the catalyst for community. Furthermore, the internet, blogging, and social media is creating all kinds of community that would have been impossible — unimaginable — even five years ago. We’ve barely scratched the surface and already so much possibility has been revealed.

For me, when all is said and done, the greatest and most palatable sense of pride I’ve experienced in relation to this blog is when I first noticed people commenting on each other’s blogs who really only could have found each other via this blog.

My diplomas stir in me no sense of achievement. When I see the connections between people I helped happen, I see that and, think, yeah, that’s something that matters.

So that’s my main point: when I say, “happy birthday blog”. I mean, “happy birthday friends”: some old, some new, some known only on-line, some known off and on. All real. Thanks for reading, commenting, and hanging out. It is a pleasure and I’m grateful for your support.

There are a lot of great people who comment on this blog but this is a post about birth, so I want to give some blog-birth related shout-outs!

To the mid-wives, if you will:

First, if it weren’t for Von planting the seed of blogging in my brain and answering some early tech questions, this blog would not exist! Von is not a prolific blogger but he is a great comic artist. Check out his site and buy the book if you can.

Second, it might not be immediately obvious from the early posts because a lot of her encouragement was initially behind the scenes, but Pudding and the Post-Fab Princess was a huge (but shy) supporter from the get-go. She also gets 100% credit for any of the fun that happens around here. She was the inspiration for the fashion posts and the early Gender Studies 101 posts. Her blog is better than awesome and a bag load of fun, wit, and intelligence. Oh and it has a ridiculously cute cat named Pudding.

Third, Many Faces of Wayne was an early supporter and frequent commentator. Our discussions on- and off-line effected and affects what happens around here. He also has a great free-ranging blog and he loves a good comment. His blog is well worth reading and, if it’s worth reading, it’s worth a comment. Join the discussion, it will make him happy.

Now I had planned to post a bunch of page-view data, but I will save that for another post.

Yesterday was my 16th-month birthday. It also coincides with my blog’s 2nd anniversary – my blog’s second birthday! My site is two years old… older than me! Check out the very first posts HERE.

Dad started writing on this site when he learned about mom’s conception of me in 2007. He felt that it was a start of a joyful journey ahead, and writing it would be a great chance to capture each happy moment of the coming of a baby.

Dad used my point-of-view in writing because he plans to transfer the ownership of the site to me when I am able to write on my own. Wow, can’t wait.

Bananarunning is Two!

Two - Marathons I raced this year; Two also – Marathons I ran as my long run this year. Funny thing is that I did better on the marathons I did as “long runs”.

Two - Kinds of races this year: with water and without water … you know. I always bring my own hydration in races over 10K. Saved me a lot of times.

Two - Things I learned too late in life. You can use math in real life and sunblock is really good for you.

Two – My favorite running frills – BodyGlide and GU Roctane.

Two – Ways this blog helped me give back and pay forward 

• 1 – G and I picked a runner and we will be gifting the runner a new pair of rubber shoes and race reg at the end of the month. His grand gesture made me smile when I was really feeling down. Stay tuned. 
• 2 – To date, the 5 teams in Nike+ Human Race Ph Ambassadors Challege (Bananarunning, Steadylang, Reema’s Road Racers, Tatanka and Weekend Road Warriors) raced and raised Php 91,638 for Gawad Kalinga’s ‘Walang Iwanan’ program. This will provide relief and clean-up work for the nine GK sites ravaged by typhoon Ondoy.  

Special mention to all runners who signed up under Team Bananarunning! You guys rocked and racked up kms for a good cause. (Help! I would love to put all your names here but I couldn’t access the full list. Help!)

Happy Anniversary! Happy birthday to my blog! Today is my 2nd year of blogging, and how time flies!

I published my first post on 03 October 2007, with nothing in mind but to be able to write down thoughts and insights. I initially started my domain at friendster, moved to blogger, until I found its present home – wordpress. Two years after, this blog has grown a lot. This may not be one of those that really get lots of traffic, but I still get around 100 visitors a day.

Let me share some 2nd year stats as of 02 October:

Oh no, I missed my own anniversary!

September 8, 2008, I earnestly began my blog, and along with it my quest to rid myself of some theatrical baggage…  And good God, I must say I’m rather amazed and proud that I actually stuck with something!  For (over) a whole year!  Thanks for reading and sticking with me, my dear bloggie friends.

For old time’s sake, let’s celebrate in haiku:

And I didn’t burst in flames

My quest is over,
My Moo is bigger, and now

And the “my” to which the title refers is not me, but rather The Dassler Effect itself.

Tomorrow, this iteration of The Dassler Effect will be exactly one year old. And I am very pleased to note that it has had a good run. Thank you, readers/viewers, so much.

The statistic that sticks out to me the most is the number of tags I have created. Perhaps that has something to do with being a librarian and wanting to classify things or from having been a “word” centered protestant thus far in life or simply because I just like words so much.

Whatever the reason, I am hoping that this blog will present more of my own words in the coming year as I would like to get back to writing a bit more. If you are here mostly for the photos, though, do not be dismayed. They will be here, too, along with contests (haiku and photo and who knows what else) which may feature your work as well!

Oh, in truth, I, too, have a rather significant birthday coming up (groan!) but that will have to wait for another post.

August 17th- my blog’s birthday!  I had no idea when I started this blog, that I’d be able to keep it going all this time!  But I have.. a minor accomplishment (especially with a toddler at home).

Thanks to all my readers for giving me reason to write (and some cousins who yell at me when I don’t.. you know who you are)!

Wahoo! Did you know I’ve been writing this blog for a year now?!? Me either. But last week while I was reveling in the silence that only comes when all three kids are at Y Day Camp for the week a random thought floated by… last year when they were at Y Camp I think I started this blog. I checked the past posts and it’s true! Last year, early August I started subjecting you all to my random rants and thoughts.

A few weeks ago there was a large bloggers conference (it’s true, such things exist). And a number of the bloggers I enjoy attended. Since then, some of them have written about the trouble they had categorizing their blog. I can sympathize. If someone asked me what type of blog I write I’d have a hard time fitting it into a category too – I suppose “life blog” works best if there is such a category.

After all, sometimes I do in fact write about my children and the things that we do. At least once a week I write about food. Sometimes I write about whatever is stuck in my head. So I don’t know what else to call it – a small snapshot of my life I suppose.

What I do know is that getting myself in the habit of writing again has been a good exercise. I was hoping it would lead to more writing and it’s just starting to (see yesterday’s post about my new food blog). It’s been fun keeping friends who live near & far aware of our happenings. And I like the early morning habit of writing 200-300 words.

I’m looking forward to what the next year brings with this blog and writing and the topic that is my life. Thanks for reading!

Last Thursday was my one year anniversary of starting Pink Vanilla Cupcakes. Wow. In one year, I have published 118 posts, had well over 12,000 hits to my site, thousands of comments, 2 blog awards, 2 featured blog honors, and 3 giveaways! Phew. Now, my stats aren’t anywhere near other blogs out there, but you know what, none of that means anything. I started this blog out of curiosity. I wondered if I could write something that someone else might like to read and think it useful or entertaining. Or more, I write something that impacts somebody and maybe makes them think differently about something. I have accomplished all of that and the comments I have received, both post on the blog and via e-mails, have been extraordinary. I didn’t intend to run advertising on my blog when I first started out. I honestly didn’t know how! But, I added Google ads and then BlogHer ads and it’s been fun to see what pops up on my blog! Hey—today I am advertising for Pepto Bismol! Apropos, no!? Ha!

I have written posts on a wide variety of subjects from kids, robots, Susan Boyle, politics, weight loss struggles, and other weird stuff. Some posts were easier to write than others. Some took on a life of their own as I was writing them. Others were kind of boring and pointless! I even admit that. But, I do think I’ve grown and have resolved some very frustrating issues I’ve had by just writing about them here and reading and responding to your comments, suggestions, support, and sometimes criticisms! Hey, bring it on—I like all feedback. Except spam. Don’t care for spam!

So, what’s next?

Well, I just started a product review and giveaway blog to partner with this one called Giveaways and Reviews by Pink Vanilla Cupcakes (original, no?). I can’t post giveaways or reviews on this site due to compliance with my advertising contracts so I created a mirror-image blog where I can host giveaways, etc. I’ve been asked to host a couple really cool giveaways that I know you’ll like and I didn’t want to pass them up. So, I’ll let you know about those on this site and link to the other site for more info! Got it!? Good. Other than that, I hope to keep posting about my weight loss successes (not failures!), my goofy kids and robot husband, reality TV obsessions, really super important issues, and whatever else lands in my brain.

And it is officially 1 year!

My blog turns 1 yesterday and now, I could comfortably (to the slightest degree) call myself a “personal blogger.”

Yesterday, was my 2 year anniversary for blogging.  I can’t believe I have been blogging for 2 years.  I only wish, I had 730 blog posts!

A lot has changed in my life in the last 2 years.  And I love that I have a place to ‘mark’ it all down.  I not only blog because I enjoy it.  I blog because it lets me look back on my life.  I blog for my kids.  So they when they are older can look back and see what they were doing and how much Eric and I loved them.  And hopefully, they will see we did everything for them and because we love them.

I also blog because I get to ‘meet’ so many wonderful blogging people!

I love reading cooking, baking, crafting, and couponing/savings blogs.  I get so many wonderful ideas from them.

My blog has also become a way for my family that live in different states to get to see what is going on in our day to day lives.  And with 4 little kids, our daily life changes quite often.

So, I thought I would share some of my favorite blogs to go and read.

I do want to mention my sisters blog.  However, I will not post a link to it as I want to keep that as private as I can.  I read my sister’s blog every time she posts.  I love finding out what is going on with my niece.

I also think my mom should start her own blog.  I think she would be really good at it and she would have a lot to blog about since she has 5 grandchildren.

Jennifer @ A Sample of Jennifer’s Thoughts I have ‘known’ her since right before David was born when I joined a message board that she is apart of.  I can’t believe it has been 5 years since we ‘meet’.  She is the mother of 2 boys and 1 girl.  She homeschools and she loves to read and travel.  She also LOVES Sonic Drive In.

Amy @ Amy’s Random Thoughts.  She is such a thoughtful and caring person.  She and her husband just adopted a little girl from China.  And she is adorable!!!  I love reading her blog.  Although, I don’t get to comment as often as I like.

Tanya @ The Sunday Baker.  She posts some awesome recipes, crafts, and things about her everyday life.  She just also recently announced her pregnancy!  Congrats!

The Lazy Organizer–Gives lots of great tips.

With Enough Coffee I could Rule the World–I just recently found this blog.  I love the way she writes.  She blogs about her family and such.  I really cool blog.

Divine-Domesticity–This is another blog that I just recently found.  She posts recipes and such. I can’t wait to have time just to sit and go through the recipes she has posted.

Recipes—-just what it says….She (Gale) posts recipes.  I again, just found this blog last week.  I love recipes.  So this blog is right down my alley….

Real Mom Kitchen-Again more recipes!  Go check out her blog. I can’t wait to try out some of her recipes.

About my own recipe blog.  I have decided.  That through the summer, I will probably only post once a month…if that on it.  Because my kids are out of school for summer vacation.  And I want to spend as much time with them during there time off as possible.  However, once they go back to school, I hope to post at least 2 recipes a week.

It is June 11th, and my one-year blog anniversary was June 2nd, which I somehow missed, and that is sad.    Also, I managed to lose another digital camera to a bad fall last weekend, which doesn’t really help me in the blogging department, and is depressing because now that school has ended I’ve been doing alot of cooking and baking.  Tomorrow a big group of my friends is going down to Cape Cod to spend the weekend there, and I have this whole long summery menu of things to cook up for them while we’re there, which I’m really excited about because I love cooking in the summertime!  Of course, it is currently 56 degrees in Boston so maybe not so much.

Alright, enough bad humor.  Until my camera is fixed (or I bite the bullet and buy my third one in the last 13 months) I have a few pictures in my Photobucket that I can post for the sake of keeping up the blog…

First up is a series of photos of Dad and me making Happy Herbivore’s Chickpea Piccata.

Overall, I enjoyed this recipe but we had to modify it a little.  The chickpea mixture that forms the patties was very dry (maybe because we used dried beans that had been soaked and cooked rather than canned?), and we had such a hard time keeping the mixture together that we ended up using an ice cream scoop to form the patties (as seen above), as well as putting lots (probably too much) of flour on them so they didn’t stick to our hands or the scoop. We did not flatten them before baking (as the recipe directs) for fear they would fall apart.  We also added a significant amount of olive oil (not HH’s style, certainly) to try to moisten the mixture and keep it together.  Also, I thought the sauce was pretty good but Dad thought it was slightly too acidic (with the bulk of the liquid being white wine and the lemon juice), and so next time we decided we’d use a little more water (in addition to that used for the cornstarch) and maybe even a dash of soymilk to even out the pH a little (while avoiding making it too creamy).

I can’t for the life of me remember where I got this tofu recipe.  If anyone has seen it before, can you please leave a comment or email me so I can give the author proper credit?  Thanks!  I usually wouldn’t post something if I didn’t know where it came from (since that is kind of the point of this blog) but they’re really pretty pictures and I’m kinda short on material at the moment. Overall this was a pretty yummy spread, nothing exceptional though.  Looking at the picture now, of course, I’m chiding myself on serving too much rice and no actual vegetables!

To wrap up, I just want to say that now that the semester has ended, I feel like a real person again, and not only am I thrilled to be back into the kitchen and back into my healthy eating and exercise habits, but I am thrilled to once again have the time to catch up on all of your wonderful blogs, from which I have been long absent. I’ll be back to commenting soon!!

Can you believe it? It’s been a whole year since I started blogging. I’m not sure if I’m surprised that an entire year has gone by, or if I’m amazed that it’s only been a year. Crazy

Happy Blogiversary to me!

One thing to note – I’ve never missed a day. Not one. I have at least one post for every single day of the past year. Oh sure – a few were pre-posted, but not many. And back in November when I joined up with NaBloPoMo, I felt guilty that I’d already been posting one per day that for many of those days I put two up! Yep. I’m crazy.

Wonder if I can keep that up for another year…

It's our bloggy baby's first birthday!

So, we just drank a bottle of champagne, ate three pounds of food (some of it vegetables, I swear!), and spent an hour trying to create some sort of “Best of SWTCTW” list. The problem is, all of our posts are so amazing, and we are so witty and entertaining and wonderful, that it’s hard to pick just a few select posts. Slash we drank a bottle of champagne and it’s just too hard to deal with stuff like that. 

The point of all this is that Six Words To Change The World turned one today!!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SWTCTW! We were very excited when we realized this today, and you should be too. If you’ve been with us for the whole year (Dave, Susannah, Carlos, Mike, Abbey, Kelsey, Maddy, etc., we’re looking at you), thank you from the bottom of our bloggy hearts. (Kathleen: “I was just about to say, ‘Please write “bloggy hearts.” I hate you so much.’”) But seriously, thank you, everyone, for reading. Stick with us, and hopefully we can celebrate our second anniversary together next year. so the past days have been nothing but tummy aches, diarrhea and hyperacidity..
sabi ng kaofcmate ko pwede din daw makuha ang diarrhea sa hangin..
how true?
nagsimula sa pagkain ng manok sa bugong at paglaklak ng isang litrong minute maid pulpy orange..
dati ko namang gawain na yun pero ewan ko ano naiba at nagtae ako..
tapos ininuman ko ng imodium kasi kelangan ko pumasok the next day..
tapos kinagabihan nahirapan naman ako dumume..

then yesterday kumain naman ako pero hinyperacidity naman ako..
but why?
i’m thankful today ended just fine..
sana gumaling na sya..
ako pala..
yung tyan ko i mean..
tsk!

malapit na ko mag 2 years sa pinagtatrabahuan ko..
malapit nako lumaya..

parang gusto ko nang umalis..
not that work ain’t fine..
i want something new..
kaso recession ngaun no?
gusto ko mag abroad..
pumunta sa lugar na mura ang fresh milk at sariwa ang hangin..
kuhanan ng litrato ang mga batang kumakain ng ice cream..
at maghanap ng matipunong magsasaka?
hahaha

tomorrow is 14th month day!
bibili ba ako ng DSLR o digicam?
o wag na ko bumili ng kahit ano?
punitin ko nalang ung pera para di ako malito?
hahaha
