Blogs have their pros, and can give you a revenue stream

Blogs can do much more than just be a venue to post daily activities on the farm. Blogs can sell product and services, and be highly informative (in fact, I think they have to be).

But can blogs work in place of a site (separate URL), for Professionals? I believe they can, and I have set up a blog for April Reeves Corporate Communications instead of a site to test the difference. The only way for me to find out is to test it on my own time and dime, not a client’s.

While you can use a .wordpress.com URL (aprilreevescorporatecommunications.wordpress.com), you can also upgrade and pay a small monthly fee to have your own URL (aprilreeves.com). Seth Godin is a marketing guru (love this guy) that has used blog technology wisely. Seth is one of the most popular marketing mavericks of our time.

There are a few drawbacks if you do not have your own URL. You do not have access to some of the technology that may help you with research and marketing. I have a big and popular site for horse enthusiasts (Horseman’s U.com) and can track where people come from and other detailed information from Google Analytics, a free service Google provides that is one of the best deals on the market today (thanks Goog). I do not have this technology for my blog, as WordPress would be the recipient of Google Analytics, not the individual blogs that end in .wordpress. But blogs do have enough analytics to give you a good idea of what is working and what you need to change.

Other drawbacks for lack of technology include a great deal of widgets and ‘gadgets’ (my word for invasive technology) that I have no real use for anyway. The purpose of my blog is to provide clients with relevant and comprehensive content, and who April Reeves – the business, is. My browsers don’t need to wade through pop up windows and flashing ads. That makes blogs a good choice for me.

Cost was a consideration. I like free. The last site I built was a $32,000 site (Horseman’s U.com). Go check it out to see what an expensive site looks like. It has 14 separate programs running behind it. It took me 6 months to ‘master’ how to use it, and one year to acquire the material to feed it. It’s my business, so for me the time spent was worth it, but for a business owner who needs to focus on his/her profit margins, sitting down in front of a computer for 10 hours a day is not an option.

Horseman’s U.com makes income from advertising. There are quite a few ads that show on the site. It also has affiliate sites attached. While HU may not pull in the huge numbers like Equisearch does, the visitors that do show up spend an average of 9 minutes and browse through 4-12 pages. The average time for most sites is 1.2 minutes and 1 page. My audience takes the time to read and look around. That is worth something. A browser deep, deep, deep in the site is worth 1000 on the landing page. I do not have Google Ads as I did not want to ‘clutter’ the site, plus I have a good number of advertisers already to manage. I’m doing fine, and I want my existing clients to get noticed, away from the clutter.

But blogs will not let you use Google AdSense. That doesn’t mean you can’t get ad dollars. Go look again at Horseman’s U and the 2 blogs. Notice a theme?

When an advertiser signs up for Horseman’s U, they also get to display their ads on the blogs as well. You load photos onto your blog don’t you? You can do the same for display advertising. Place your ads in strategic zones that are relevant to the advertiser and the post.

What if you already have a parent site? Why would you want to create a blog as well?

1. It’s a great place for employees to post their knowledge.
2. Once a blog has been out there for a while, it will drive traffic to the parent site.
3. If you use advertising on your site, you can increase the value to your ad clients with the additional offerings of the blogs. The combined visitor counts could be the tipping point for a client agreeing  to sign up for advertising.
4. You can reuse and reposition your articles and copy.
5. Blogs have a built-in visitor base of similar interests (your next client could be there).
6. Blogs are the first step to social media. They connect with Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, SocialVibe, LinkedIn, Del.icio.us and a host of others.
7. Blogs are considered more authentic and trustworthy in their content and message.
8. They are super easy to work with, once set up (call us!), unlike sites which often need an html expert.
9. You can link yourself into oblivion. This is a good thing! Linking back and forth from the parent site adds value for both. Do at least 10 links a day!
10. It’s a great way for potential clients to leave feedback about products/services. If you’re smart you can use techniques to encourage comments.
11. You can optimize a blog for keywords and content.
12. Blogs can build up your reputation as an expert in your industry.

Keep an eye on the blue chip blogs. They can generate over a million hits a month, and generate great commentary and advice. Blogs this big are not usually in niche markets (like the horse industry) but you will find them in finance, celebrities and marketing. These big blogs can also help you with ideas and design.

If your blog’s audience is younger (18-24) you are in the highest demographic for readership. Combine that with finance, celebrities or marketing and you may have one of the busiest on the web – soon. Otherwise, build your blog as best as you can (and call us if you need help or get stuck) and follow our tips and advice on how to maximize your reach and effectiveness with your blog. My name is Naoi pronounced (No-ee), and I’m starting this blog “The Dating Desert” to write about my experiences with men, the experiences of my friends with men, and to find amusement in what is otherwise a depressing time to be dating.

My tone is sarcastic, and often cynical – but I am not a ‘man-hater’ or total pessimist, I’m just a girl who has had her share of dating and relationship disasters over the years and therefore am cautious.

A little about me… while I do date – I have no desire to have children or get married.  This is for a couple of reasons.  One, I was married at a young age, and feel like I’ve covered that already.  Two, I have never had a desire to procreate, and while I acknowledge maybe someday I will – it isn’t likely.  Three, marriage is the last legal form of slavery, and with a success rate of around 30 percent – I find it to be a waste of time.  I believe it’s rather silly of us to believe we will find this ‘one’ person to annoy us the rest of our lives.  Having said that, I’m happy for those I know who are married and wish them the best in their relationships.

What I am is a successful,  intelligent, independent girl who basically dates with the hope that I will meet someone cool enough to hang out with, and sleep with on a consistent basis.  While my hopes may seem small and reasonable you wouldn’t believe how overly complicated it is to find what you want out there.  Whether you want the fairytale, or just a fairly casual relationship – you face the same obstacles.  And those obstacles often begin with weeding through the idiots.

For those of us out there with high standards and high expectations of ourselves and of others around us… it can be downright depressing.  And while I may never find answers, or a tolerable man… at the very least I will amuse myself with the tales of dating today and hopefully will also amuse others.

I’m a very blunt person, so my blog will speak frankly about sex, dating, and the dirty details.  While I will try to maintain a level of class… sometimes things just need to be stated the way they are… and that’s what I will do.

Welcome!  This is my first blog that I want to share with other lovers of fiction whether it be in the format of books, anime or manga.  For all of my life, I have used books to escape to another world and the have offered me a lot of comfort.  I eventually added anime and manga because I felt that like books, they offered so much in the form of escaping to a wonderful world full of creativity.  I have haunted blogs for years reading reviews of other books, anime and manga (BAMs) to find more for my mind to devour.  What I realized was of course the obvious, BAMs are personal and lies in the eyes of the beholder.  I also realized that my eyes and insight is different and I want to share my thoughts too since there may be someone out there that share some of my interests and may also be looking for additional recommendations for their enjoyment.

I have eclectic tastes and I can apprreciate a well written story howevervI have certain genres and ’likes’ that I gravitate towards over and over again.  I love romance in all BAMs, even a touch of romance is thrilling to me.  I adore shoujo anime or manga.  I like epics, adventure and fantasy but have been drawn to scifi and history too.  I love learning about new cultures in the form of fiction since I felt like I spent many years reading encyclopedias and history books and now I just want to enjoy escaping to a fun place.

I will not be sharing much in the way of personal information since I prefer that this be divulged by my interests.  Check my favorite lists of BAMs, you may find a kindred spirit.

Well, I’ve fallen a bit behind in my planned updates due to a wonderful little thing called National Novel Writing Month (affectionately nicknamed “NaNoWriMo” or just “NaNo”), which has cut into my reading and writing time pretty dramatically. Not that I’m complaining—NaNo is quite possibly one of the most fun writing projects I have ever been a part of! It just means that I haven’t been reviewing books much of late, since I’ve been prepping fro my novel-writing marathon and then writing the actual novel. But hopefully, one of these days, I will get a bit ahead in my wordcount and have some time to write another review. Question: How long does it take to get visitors and what is the difference between sites and blogs?

It will take time for your new website to build a visitor (traffic) base. No website gets instant recognition and numbers, even if you submit the site to the Search Engines (see below) and post (add stuff) daily. Expect to take 6 months before you see any substantial visitor numbers coming in (see below).

Why? Because websites are found by visitors organically at the beginning. That means, visitors come across your site in a keyword search or a link from another site. There are ways to increase traffic fairly quickly, but be prepared to do the work.

Here’s how sites and blogs work:

Links – these are so important. They tell the SE’s (search engines) that you are ‘connected’, and that other sites want to join in. But the amount of links on your site are not as important as the quality of the links. Again, the SE’s look for WHO you are linked to. If other quality (content) sites link to you, and you to them, the SE’s will rank you higher. If you have links to useless junk sites, you can actually drop in rank, or be cast aside indefinitely.

Google does not judge a site by technology alone. All those employees Google has – well, they actually visit your site, personally, and take a good look around. They decide if the site is a good one or not. They decide if the links are valuable. Their critique of your site is part of the process of getting ranked higher.

Posts – this is the term for the number of articles you add or changes you do to your site. If you have the time to post every day, your site may get ranked higher as activity is important. Many sites are born and neglected, leaving stagnant information out there. What happens when you do this, is that your visitors will quit coming back. SE’s don’t like this.

Content – the most crucial part of a site. Depending on what type of site you have, content IS everything. If you are a general information site, you had better have great articles that are unique and new. Stealing content and calling it your own will get you taken off the world wide web. Asking permission to use content and linking it back will win Brownie points.

If you are a food processor, you don’t have to have articles (but it helps) but you should have good navigation (how to move through the site) and a tidy, clean appearance. Having articles does have advantages: when visitors use specific keywords, they may have a better chance of coming across your site. If you are not a writer, find articles that are relevant and enhance your site. Contact the article owner and ask permission to add their article and link back to their site (We help clients with these services).

Search Engines – Google, Yahoo, MSN, Explorer – these are all search engines. When you type in your keywords, such as “paint stallion Texas” you come across pages of sites and blogs with those words. Which sites show up depends on several things:

1. How well ranked the site is
2. How easy it was for the SE to find those keywords – if they show up on the page about 3 times, it may get ranked higher.
3. How often that site changes and adds new material
4. If you didn’t use the word ‘Texas’ you may get sites that are in your area. SE’s can seek out only those sites that they believe may be of interest to you, and that usually means those sites in your region.
5. How long ago the site has been submitted. Once you build your site, you need to let the SE’s know you are out there. You can go to each SE and submit your site to them. Once they have a look around your site, they will rank it and keep an eye on it by ‘spidering’ it once or twice a week (they send out searches to your site, look at all the pages within three layers deep, and bring back the results to use when some other visitor wants to find you). If a site was submitted properly at the start, and it’s a good site, you should be able to find it within 3-5 pages of a search within one month. If you do not submit a site, you will eventually be found but it may take a year or more. Blogs do not get submitted. They are found organically in outside searches.

The difference between Sites and Blogs

There are two major differences between sites and blogs:

1. Sites stand alone, meaning they have to attract visitors on their own merits. Blogs however, have a built-in visitor base already established. When you build a blog, you can set it to give back ‘pings’: little reminders to other blog owners that you just added a new post. Let’s say you just created a WordPress.com blog, and you added your first post. Whatever ‘genre’ and words are in that post, those relevant blogs will get a little ‘ping’ notice in their email alerting them to your post, so they will go visit right away. Voila, instant visitors! If you have an interest in horse training blogs, you will get pings back from any post about horse training. If your ‘genre’ is organic food, you will receive pings about organic related articles.
2. Blogs are free – for the most part. You can pay a very small fee to create a really great blog – one where you can use your own URL (aprilreeves.com as opposed to aprilreeves.wordpress.com). These paid blogs also give you more room to do cool things, but leave it alone until you are familiar with a basic free blog. Once your knowledge grows, you can move over and learn new tricks. The free blogs give you tons of space (megabytes) to use, so if you can keep your photos small (no more than 100kb each) you can post for years. Once you reach the maximum MB allowed, you have a very small premium to pay. If you go to my Q&A blog, aprilreeveshorsetraining.wordpress.com, you will find several hundred posts with lots of photos (and I have barely scratched the surface), so you will get a good idea of just how much posting and photos you can do.

Other Advantages to Blogs

Free is great, and having a built-in visitor base helps too, but blogs have an added advantage with SE’s. They are ranked high in searches if their content is posted on a steady basis (1-2 a week) and is of reasonable quality. It’s generally easier to add content to a blog than a site for the simple reason that sites can be created by any number of software (takes time to learn), but blogs are just a matter of ‘type and post’. You don’t have to know html (code) at all to get a great looking blog.

You can add all sorts of ‘widgets’ and useful tools to your blog. They are coming out daily with new gadgets and cool stuff to add. Just remember that the more stuff you put on a blog, the cheaper and tackier it gets. Make sure your widgets are relevant and functional.

Blogs are usually for people to post their thoughts and daily activities to, and see if they create a following. Blogs can also be used for selling items and can become a business tool (services).

Blogs also have built-in statistics. You can view your visitor counts daily (blogs don’t count your personal visits) and see where they came from (referrers), what posts they read (today’s posts), what keywords they used to find you (search engine terms) and what links visitors clicked on to leave your blog (clicks). You can get statistics for up to one full year. It’s exciting at first to watch the visitor counts grow. It can grow into an addiction, so be careful.

I decided I wanted to get started earlier this year on christmas shopping, so that we could spread the cost out a bit, as well as take time to find really special gifts online and have time for them to be delivered before Christmas.  Of course our families have 5 birthdays in November, so we’re not thinking ahead as much as I’d like to brag about, but it’s a start.  I’ve come across some really wonderful new shops on Etsy recently, and the creativity of the owners just amazes me.  I’ve thought for a while about starting an Etsy shop for different crafts, but I’m not sure I have enough creativity or time to commit to that kind of endeavor.  It may turn into one of my goals for 2010, but I definitely have plenty of goals to accomplish before the end of this year.

A recurring post on this blog will be my “J’adore” series items/people/things that I run across online that I love.  My plan so far is to make this a weekly list, which will come out every Saturday.  That way I have a whole week to gather 8-12 things to share for my list.  But don’t be surprised if it turns into a montly occurence, rather than weekly!

I plan to post personal stories and vents here, as well as anecdotes about my work, product reviews, jokes, videos, photos of our family, etc.  My goal is for one daily post, but that may (will) evolve over time.

I’ve been thinking about the nature of this blog and trying to determine precisely what type of content to post. In the end, I decided not to attempt to recreate the Facebook, Castle Door here as it is already successful and would probably be way too much work to move. Instead, I intend for this to serve as a sister site. I’ll post selected material from papers I write, pertinent conversation I have, and try and pass along good resource reviews as I come across them. I’d be delighted if this takes off in the same way as tCD:Fcbk, but recognize that since users cannot introduce new threads here, this will probably serve better as a complement to the Facebook group and not a substitute for it.

I haven’t blogged in ages! Kinda forgot, so therefore i now promise to any readers i have that i will now blog EVERY day from today onwards. It may be interesting, may be different, may be boring or a number of other things! It could topic upon Politics, Music, Life, Funny stuff or a number of other stuff!

So! Keep coming back for more random stuff, if i get over a certain amount of hits a month that grow over a few months ill make it bigger, better and get a domain ect.
