The Root of All Evil? is a television documentary, written and presented by Richard Dawkins, in which he argues that the world would be better off without religion. The documentary was first broadcast in January 2006, in the form of two 45-minute episodes (excluding advertisement breaks), on Channel 4 in the UK. Dawkins has said that the title The Root of All Evil? was not his preferred choice, but that Channel 4 had insisted on it to create controversy.

His sole concession from the producers on the title was the addition of the question mark. Dawkins has stated that the notion of anything being the root of all evil is ridiculous. Dawkins’s book The God Delusion, released in September 2006, goes on to examine the topics raised in the documentary in greater detail. (Excerpt from en.wikipedia.org)

Racism: A History – Episode 3/3: A Savage Legacy

The third and final episode examines the impact of racism in the 20th Century. By 1900, European colonial expansion had reached deep into the heart of Africa. Under the rule of King Leopold II, The Belgian Congo was turned into a vast rubber plantation. Men, women and children who failed to gather their latex quotas would have their limbs dismembered. The country became the scene of one of the century’s greatest racial genocides, as an estimated 10 million Africans perished under colonial rule. Contains scenes which some viewers may find disturbing.

35 years after Nixon started the war on drugs, we have over one million non-violent drug offenders living behind bars. The War on Drugs has become the longest and most costly war in American history, the question has become, how much more can the country endure? Inspired by the death of four family members from “legal drugs” Texas filmmaker Kevin Booth sets out to discover why the Drug War has become such a big failure. Before he went to radio Red Skelton was a Burlesque Comic as many of the comedians in radio and TV. In 1961 and 1962 I spent a lot of time at the the Graand Bulesque in St. Louis. I was 16 and 17 but looked older than the 18 years old you had to be to get in. The Comedy was great (maybe a little on the suggestive side.) I was told in Chicago by one of the comics that the Grand was the best. I saw some of the best like Sally Rand who stripped in her 70s. I learned from retired dancers, who were usherettes, about the business and the parties given by rich men. During intermission I would sit and listen to their stories. I miss Burlesque. It was an art.

We go to Athens for a report from a protest at Syntagma Square against austerity measures and corporate greed, speak to an activist in Rome where 200,000 rallied, and go to Japan for a report on the Occupy Tokyo demonstration. We also air excerpts of a speech by Julian Assange of WikiLeaks at Occupy London Stock Exchange.

Danny Glover, Cornel West Speak Out at Occupy Protests As MLK Memorial is Dedicated in DC

In the United States, police arrested hundreds of people over the weekend at demonstrations and occupations inspired by Occupy Wall Street. Arrest totals include: 175 in Chicago; 100 in Arizona; 92 in New York City; 19 in Raleigh, North Carolina; 19 in Denver; and 19 in Washington, D.C. — including Princeton University Professor Cornel West, on the steps of the Supreme Court. West was arrested shortly after attending the dedication ceremony for the new Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. memorial. At the dedication, President Obama said: “It is right for us to celebrate Dr. King’s marvelous oratory, but it is worth remembering that progress did not come from words alone. Progress was hard. Progress was purchased through enduring the smack of billy clubs and the blast of fire hoses. It was bought with days in jail cells and nights of bomb threats.” We also go to California where actor and activist Danny Glover addressed Occupy Oakland.

Times Square Taken Over as Occupy Wall Street Enters Second Month, Hundreds Arrested Across Country

It was a month ago today that Occupy Wall Street began in Manhattan’s Financial District. The protest encampment based at Zuccotti Park remains and continues to grow despite last week’s threatened eviction by the City of New York. On Saturday, thousands of protesters march from Zuccotti Park to Times Square, the heart of New York’s media, tourism and entertainment district. Earlier in the day, about two dozen people were arrested at a CitiBank in Lower Manhattan while they attempted to take their money out of the bank. We speak to Ryan Devereaux, a Democracy Now! reporter who has been closely following the Occupy Wall Street movement. We also speak with Julia Gonzales, director of Organizing for the Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition, about the Occupy Denver protests.

Democracy Now! Thursday, October 13, 2011. “News for All the People”: Juan González & Joseph Torres on the Epic Story of Race & the U.S. Media

After seven years of research, the groundbreaking new book, “News for All the People: The Epic Story of Race and the American Media,” examines how the media has played a pivotal role in perpetuating racist views in the United States. It recalls lives of the unsung pioneering black, Latino, Native American and Asian-American journalists who challenged the worst racial aspects of the white-owned media. It also tells the untold story of how the fight over who controls the internet is just the latest chapter in a centuries-old debate on the role of the media — and the technologies used to deliver it — in a democracy. Today, in a Democracy Now! exclusive, we speak with the book’s authors, Democracy Now! co-host and award-winning journalist Juan González, and Joseph Torres of the media reform organization Free Press. “One of the things that we’ve uncovered is that this fundamental debate that is constantly occurring is: does our nation need a centralized system of news and information, or does it need a decentralized, autonomous system? And which serves democracy best?” González says. “It turns out that in those periods of time when the government has opted for a decentralized or autonomous system, democracy has had a better opportunity to flourish, racial minorities have been able to be heard more often and to establish their own press. In those periods of the nation’s history when policies have fostered centralized news and information, that’s when dissident voices, racial minorities, marginalized groups in society are excluded from the media system.” On the role of civil rights groups in the digital age, Torres notes that “the internet is an open platform. [Internet service providers], up to now, have not been able to interfere with your web traffic. You can access any site you want without being slowed down. What they want to do is … have a pay-for-play system, where if you have a website at Democracy Now!, Democracy Now! will have to pay more to make sure the public can see your site at the fastest speeds, otherwise you’re going to be slowed down. For people of color, it is critical, because of the low barrier of entries, the internet, that we keep the internet open — a free platform — because we don’t have the economic wealth to be able to pay ISPs to make sure our sites are loaded faster.”

A test for any true democracy is whether or not people can hear, and be heard on, a diverse range of views. Paradoxically, while the Rich World wages war to bring its concept of democracy to the Middle East, it does nothing as its own minorities are marginalized by a shrinking base of media owners. While the United States media had some fifty major conglomerates in the 1980s, by the year 2000 just six corporations dominated. Presenter and executive producer of internationally respected news broadcaster Democracy Now! – Amy Goodman – joins the Radio New Internationalist team to examine some of the effects of media concentration. With guests from Latin America, Africa and the United Kingdom, we explore the ever-increasing boundaries of independent media created by and for a wide range of people.

Its hard to predict whether Dick Gregory will be most celebrated as a path-breaking comedian or a trailblazing civil rights activist. Its impossible to imagine the history of either movement without him—or without his unique blending of the two. In the early 1960s, he became one of the first black comedians to perform before integrated audiences. In 1967, he ran for mayor of Chicago against Richard J. Daley, and a year later for president as the Freedom and Peace Party candidate. The author of and contributor to many politically charged books, Gregory is still a staunch, wry political voice across a range of issues as varied as nutrition, social justice, and the environment. Chicago Sun-Times columnist Laura Washington interviews the provocative and always unpredictable Gregory.

The following text appears on the back album cover to explain why it was recorded and sold, with all profits going to charity:

There are people in America underfed and undernourished.

It’s hard to believe, so hard perhaps that more often than not, the natural respose is: “Name them.” As if that could pu to rest the desperate needs of people.

Well, I can name them — over 20,000 of them in fact.

They are the men, women, and children of LeFlore County, Mississippi.

Since 1955 the Department of Agriculture has given surplus foods to the State of Mississippi — mostly in such basic commodities as butter, milk, cheese, flour, and potatoes. Each county in the state decides if it wants the food. If a county joins, it must pay storage and distribution. In the delta region, LeFlore County, over 50% of the population qualifies for surplus food.

In May, 1962, a campaign was begun to register all eligible Negro voters in LeFlore County. (At this writing, less than 350 Negroes have registered to vote in a county with a Negro population of over 30,000). Shortly thereafter the local board of supervisors withdrew their co-operation with the Dept. of Agriculture’s surplus food distribution leaving thousands of families with little or no means of subsistence during their season of unemployment between cotton harvesting and planting time.

It is my belief that this was done in vindictive reprisal simply because Negroes had attempted to exercise their rights as citizens.

The county officials claim otherwise. They contend that they discontinued the program because of the expense involved. To feed the approximately 26,000 people in the county, it costs LeFlore a reported $37,000 per year. And this they say is too much.

Maybe they’re right. I don’t know. But whatever the reason I do know this: In the riches nation in the world it is not right that our children grow up forever warped by the many nights of their hunger. It is not right that we can afford billions of dollars in foreign aid and yet neglect our own.

That is the reason for this record. The sale of this LP is limited to 37,000 copies at $1.60. The entire profits — less the manufactured cost of $.60 per record — will then be turned over to the LeFlore County Board of Supervisors in order that they may continue the distribution of surplus food to those in need, both white and Negro alike.

That this problem should exist today is not Mississippi’s disgrace — it is America’s. Somewhere along the line we must have failed. And worse, we have coupled this failure with a fear to speak out and a fear to think and act for ourselves.

It is fitting then that this album was recorded live at San Diego State College before over a thousand young men and women who by their curiosity and their concern make it clear that they fortunately are deeply involved in the struggle against injustice and ignorance; and committed to being vital participants in the business of our nation.

As the record begins, I have just finished my regular performance and have now opened the floor to questions. For the time, the comedy is over.

The questions are concerned with — the Negro, race relations, integration, the Black Muslims, and the very nature of man himself.

Of course I don’t pretend to have all or most of the answers. But there is one I am most sure of and to one I am most deeply committed. And that answer, I feel, is the one, to most of the questions facing us today. And that is:

If nothing else we are — all of us our brother’s keeper.
